Title: Lame Xbox commercial
Post by: Grey Ninja on November 01, 2003, 05:28:26 PM
Don't know if any Americans see this one, so listen closely.  Canada has a department store called Zellers, that is sorta like Wal-Mart, but has slightly higher prices and less selection.

Anyways, I just saw an ad on TV, where they were basically advertising their "low" price on popular electronics, such as Xbox.  This kid and his mom comes in and talks to the guy behind the counter.  The guy is talking to the kid with a bunch of gibberish talk (nonsense words) that I assumed represented a bunch of technical talk that the Mom wouldn't understand.  Then he turns to the Mom and says: "Xbox has a 733MHz processor.  That means it's better".  That's an EXACT quote.

Now I don't know about the rest of you, but this SERIOUSLY pisses me off, and I am about to hunt down the email address for Zeller's PR division.  Last I heard, having more power didn't mean that a console was "better" than the others.  And last time I checked, PS2 has the most powerful CPU of the current generation, and Xbox has the LEAST powerful processor.  It SERIOUSLY pisses me off when people say stupid crap like that, and it pisses me off even more when its presented on TV.  I would go so far as to call this slander, as it's not backed up by any sort of fact.

Here's what we do, Ninja- we form a mob and storm the house of the guy who made that commercial. We tie him very tightly to a stake in his front yard using wet raw hide- when the raw hide dries, it gets shorter and shorter, thus ripping the man's limbs off of his body bit by bit. You in?

Nope, it's puffery, it's perfectly legal.  It's no different than saying "Our hamburger is better than their hamburger".  It's disputable, not concrete fact.

The only good thing about Zellers is that not a lot of people know that they sell video games, so sometimes I can pick up a hot item if I was too lazy to pre-order.

Also, the people who work there are dumb tits, and they sell things they are not supposed too.  Such as certain demo disks that say "NOT FOR RESALE" clearly on the front cover.  Guess I should'nt call them dumb because they hooked me up, sorry Zellers.

If it's on TV, it's GOTTA be true. Flush those GameCube's and PlayStation 2's down the toilets, parents. Xbox has a 733 MHz processor!

Oh well, I saw an advert the other day for some new Broadband company, and it has a father and child playing basketball, spewing forth latest news. The father tells the kid "Hey, heard that the PS2 is now live online?" and the kid goes "HOW'D HE KNOW THAT?" in a scary manner, and then the Dad goes "Yep, online with Live!"

WOW. I SHOULD GO BUY AN XBOX LIVE! KIT FOR MY PS2 THEN? Goooooooo advertising!

I know this isn't directly related, but did anyone see that Grabbed By the Ghoulies commercial where, at the end, I swear to god they said "from Rare, the makers of Donkey Kong Country!" What?? They're actually advertising one of Nintendo's first and most popular franchises?
Title: RE:Lame Xbox commercial
Post by: Bill Aurion on November 06, 2003, 04:09:42 PM
You weren't hearing things...Lookie

It's sad, really, because I doubt there are many team members who actually worked on DKC there...
Title: RE:Lame Xbox commercial
Post by: mouse_clicker on November 06, 2003, 04:27:08 PM
I doubt there's many team members who worked on Perfect Dark still at Rare, but all that really matters to consumers is the name. I just thought it was funny that MS was even mentioning a Nintendo franchise in a good light.

Man, what a disgrace to Donkey Kong.  Putting Donkey Kong on the same box as Grabbed By the Goulies... Nintendo should f*cking sue.
Title: RE:Lame Xbox commercial
Post by: mouse_clicker on November 06, 2003, 05:01:17 PM
I think they can, actually- the Donkey Kong name is owned by Nintendo, and Microsoft is using it for their own profit. Notice how there's not even an (r) or a (tm)? If that's not a violation of something, I don't know what is.

I'm surprised that they didn't use Goldeneye instead...
Title: RE:Lame Xbox commercial
Post by: ThePerm on November 06, 2003, 05:19:44 PM
actually the team that built grabbed by ghoolies is about 98% the same people who worked on DKC....however...the goldeneye and perfect dark people are very gone.

Actually, that could be a bad thing if GbtG turns out to be a stinker...*looks into future*

Kid: Hey, Donkey Kong GC!
Kid2: Wait!  Same people who made that turd GbtG made this series!
Kid: You're right!  Screw this!

Having played it , i can say its mediocre after about a half hour.  Its basically 'The zombies ate my neighbors' in 3-d, but not as fun.  My cousin returned it the next day.

"Nintendo should f*cking sue. "

they really cant, because all MS did was state a fact. RARE did indeed make DKC, so the statement was completely factual. It is funny however.
Title: RE: Lame Xbox commercial
Post by: thecubedcanuck on November 07, 2003, 01:38:56 AM
" I'm surprised that they didn't use Goldeneye instead..."

DKC is closer to the same genre as grabbed by ghoulies I would guess.

Donkey Kong Country was a Rare/Nintendo collaboration, and Rare is basically taking all the credit for making it.  And yes, Donkey Kong is a Nintendo trademark last I checked.

i know that, but i couldn't see any form of Donkey Kong is a Nintendo copywrite all properties blah blah etc on there, not even a little ® anywhere.

This isn't exactly on topic but I didn't want to start a whole thread about it.

I was at Toys R Us today and saw what XBOX is offering as their holiday bundle.  The two games in the bundle are The Clone Wars and Tetris Worlds.  That seems to me to be the lamest bundle ever.  Would anyone be swayed to buy the system based on those games?  I think it also offered 2 months free online membership as well, but the bundle is still weak in my opinion.

Edit: Sorry, guys.  There is a thread that already touches on this.  I didn't mean to be repetitive.

Im surprised Microsoft changed the bundle that was 2 great sega games into 2 mediocre budget games and a lack luster 2 month trail to Live! which 50% of the people who bought the bundle might not use it

I saw that commercial too and it SUCKED!!!!  I am like wtf, makes the xbox so good.  Yes it has good games, but most of the games are on PC anyway, so its not that original, plus the games suck.(most of them, no I am not flaming)  The only good thing microsoft has is games like Shenmue and JSRF which I really wanted since I have a DC.

BTW - I think Nintendo should sue since they said they made DK but they do not have the rights to it, so technically, they didn't make the idea of it, just the game, it is very misleading

And yes I think it will hurt nintendo, if it sucks

If you wanted to know why they didn't use GoldenEye or Perfect Dark in the ads for GbtG... Well, they did.  In the Demo movie for GbtG on some lame-ass Xbox demo disk in the store, they used "From the makers of GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark..."  Of course I smugly added "Comes a game unrelated to either of them.  How much of Rare's past is the New Rare gonna rape?

I think it's weird cause even though the games were bloody good, hardly any of them did as well as they should have (GE007 and BK did great though - but BK, CBFD and PD did sh*t in comparison). And you know what the crap thing is? Despite the fact that hardly any of the Xbox players have played those great games, they're all gonna go 'Banjo was such an excellent game! So was PD and Conker! GbtG is gonna be so cooL!'
It sickens me.

Ok, i just did the impossible - i went to IGNXbox and looked for the Grabbed by teh Ghoulies review. A feat I'm sure, for someone who is really uncomfortable in anything other than Nintendo.
It got 7.0 overall. Not bad, but REALLY bad for Rare's first Xbox-exclusive game. OF course, the reader reviews make it seem a better game, at 8.0.

Here's some points about the game form the review:
http://xbox.ign.com/articles/455/455857p1.html

- So you're out on a romantic walk with your woman when all of the sudden she's grabbed by a group of ghoulies. Now you've got to rescue her.
- there's so much going on that it's too easy to accidentally break a rule and cause the Grim Reaper - the source of many, many deaths - to appear. Get used to dying a lot because you'll find yourself in situations where death is simply unavoidable -- not a good thing
- Other factors in the game's frustrating equation are the controls, camera, and auto-targeting
- presentation is pretty killer, despite the love-it-or-hate-it art style. The best example of this is the cutscenes, which are told in a storybook format and use animated panels.
- Our biggest complaint would have to be in regards to the simplistic character and enemy models, and there are bound to be a number of you out there who could do without the art style, but you do eventually grow use to it after playing the game for a while.
- Our biggest beef with the game's sound is the lack of variety. Too often it seems that you're hearing the same tune for the thirtieth time.
- There's no feeling of progression, and the gameplay is very repetitive, but in short spurts beating up on monsters has its moments.

Yikes.
You know, the game sounds a lot like a crappy imitation of Viewtiful Joe.

And guess what else they added?
Rare title originally slated for GameCube

My Rare has turned into a "graphics first, gameplay later" company! ;_____;

And just so you know, I believe GbtG was in planning long before VJ was...

FYI I have seen this ad many times and thought the original post sounded wrong, and I just saw the ad again so I watched closely and confirmed my suspicions: he says "that means it's good" not "better". Don't know if they changed the ad or it was just misheard. It's still a funny ad.

It's weird, GbtG doesn't even seem like Rare's style of games. I guess that's because most of the old staff is gone.

Oh well, @ least now we know we're not missing out on anything since we lost Rare.

I have seen this commercial daily now for 2 weeks, and its not the fact they say the X-Box is better. That is what advertising is for, you pay so people will say your product is better, the best choice, yada, yada.  What bothers me is the way these people are talking, especially the young guy with his mom. Someone needs to tell these people that they are not gangsters from the hood, they are no relation to snoop or nelly, they are spoiled white kids from upper middle class homes who would almost surely crap their pants if they ever met a real gangster.

LOL.  You should see them in my local EB.  Only by the grace of God can i resist impaling them with my keys.  Funny thing is, they're always looking at the XBOX section.  "DoA:XB is off the chain yo!  On the real..."

I am not going to say you are wrong... but I am quite sure that I wouldn't fly off the handle if it was something so simple as that.  Maybe they did change the ad... but it just doesn't seem likely to me any way you cut it.  I will have to watch for the commercial again at any rate.

I'll confirm canuck's comment.  He does say "that means it's good"

But it's kind of dissapointing how the fact that if he said "better" would be more similar to a real life situation.  I mean, that's the kind of ignorance that many xbox players share.  Its really sad that they're too naive to realize that a faster processor can have nothing to do with the quality of a game.

And the fact that the "street-talkin" teen says "shizzle nizzle" or whatever the hell he says makes me very, very happy that I don't own an Xbox.
