Title: Wii Price Ceiling and Shipment Forecast
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on May 25, 2006, 05:31:44 AM
Nintendo says Wii's price "will not exceed $250".  The company plans to ship six million systems between fall and March 2007, along with seventeen million games.

Nintendo News: Nintendo Announces Wii Information, Worldwide Shipments

REDMOND, Wash., May 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Following its   overwhelming debut at E3 2006, Nintendo today announced the current fiscal   year unit shipment forecast for its new home game system, Wii(TM). Nintendo   also confirmed that the price of the Wii system, which incorporates unique   freehand control, will not exceed $250 in America, or 25,000 yen in Japan. The   company plans to ship 6 million systems to retailers around the world between   its launch in the fourth quarter of 2006 and the end of its fiscal year on   March 31, 2007.

The projections are part of a full-year financial forecast that sees   growth of 18 percent in sales globally, based on anticipated continuing strong   demand for the Nintendo DS(TM) portable game system, as well as a successful   launch for Wii.

The company also said it expects to sell 17 million Wii games in the   period. Exact launch dates, identification of the launch library of titles and   details on the unique Virtual Console aspect of Wii will be announced soon.

Oh, 6 million til March 07? That's like... 4 million for the holidays. 1.66 million for each major territory... nowhere near enough if they want this thing to be a success.

Considering the DS has sold 16 million in 16 months and is considered the fastest selling system in Japan AND they're dealing with the slow pace of production that comes with new hardware, I can't imagine why you think that.

What did Xbox 360 have available in that time frame?  I don't think it was 6 million.

Maybe he's being sarcastic, with Mario you never know!

Comparing to how much Microsoft has shipped for the 360, 6 million until March is a really big number.  That's roughly 1 million a month. That's huge.

Uh, $249.99 is still below their $250 ceiling, I just hope they don't pull such a cheap trick. I'm still expecting it to launch at $200.

I just like the sound of it.

That software number is insane.

I'm following up with NOA and should hopefully have some executive comments later today.  I'm going to ask the questions you guys are asking and more.

Knowing Nintendo the software amount includes virtual console games.

And if the Wii is $249.99 I will happily wait for a price drop or for used consoles to be available.  Nintendo's giving me Zelda for the Cube at the same time so it's not like I'll have nothing to play in the meantime.

Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
I think so, but how are we going to get the peanut butter inside the goat?

Ah Pinky and The Brain, a classic.

If they give a Bundle with the Wii for $250 i'll probably get it at launch, otherwise I'll wait for a price drop.

Almost 3 games per console.

I believe that they are considering a package with two controllers and a pack-in game like Wii Sports. That would cost $249.99. The intention would be to make things simpler for non-gamers who would be wary of adding additional games and controllers. The alternative is to stick with a traditional bare-bones system with just one controller and no game for $199.99. I'm fairly certain they don't want two retail packages though, so they will have to choose one or the other.

Well I hope they go with the $249.99 package

Hmm...followed by a price drop to $199 after the first year?

Oh, and 12 of those 17 million titles shipped will be mine!

Depends on sales and the competition, if sales are high and the competition keeps their prices high, then no price drops, if sales start to taper off orthe competion has price drops then maybe.

Hmm, well I plan on getting a Wii, Zelda, and Red Steel for launch. I guess I need to find one more game to pickup so I can meet Nintendo's quota.

Maybe Rayman, that game looks better every time I see it.

So is Kairon buying 12 games or 12 million games.

THE WORDING IS SOMEWHAT MISLEADING

I still think Wii Sports should be a pack-in with the Wii at $199 anyway.  The system SHOULD come with two controllers -- especially if Nintendo really wants to represent the "ii" in Wii well.  It only makes sense.

If they charge $250 for it then they better include Wii Sports and Wii Orchestra with it since neither of those "games" since I wouldn't consider buying either by themselves. As for games I WILL buy: maybe the Wii version of Zelda, MP 3, WarioWare, and a bunch of Virtual Console games since most of the 3rd party games don't seem good(i'm looking at you Tony Hawk and your Dreamcast graphics). If it makes it out before that March period you can add Super Mario Galaxy to that.

Nintendo doesn't like to sell consoles at a loss, at $250 they can give you the bundle, at 200 maybe not

I don't think they could give you two controllers and wii sports at 199.  Unless they leave out the nunchuks which is remotely possible.  If nunchuks retail at 25 bucks then that wouldn't be too bad.  I'd probably buy that pack, one or two nunchuks, Metroid and zelda to start.  Then I'd wait a week while I play Metroid and Zelda for reviews of the unknown launch titles to come in to aid in my additional purchasing decisions.

If the conversion is correct, then we should get it here for £150. SUCCESS!

whoa, 6 million? that's a lot.....

17 million is even more

and the least Nintendo should pack with the Wii is two wiimotes+two nunchuks.....asking for Wii Sports as well would be too much >_>......

If the following comes in a $250 bundle, I'll be there on launch day:

- Console with cords and sensor bar
- Two wiimotes
- Two nunchaku attachments
- One Virtual Console controller
- Thank You Card to download any five games on the VC

Who am I kidding? I'll be there on launch day regardless. Damn yous, Nintendo!

I like the way you think except I think Wii sports would be more likely than the 5 downloads

I dunno, if they fleshed out Wii Orchestra more, I could see some promise for the game

Heard about the price earlier, awesome news.  Impressive shipping numbers, too.
I'm hoping for 200, but 250 wouldn't be bad.  Depends on what they're offering.

"The GameCube sold 1.2 million units in its first season in 2001 in the U.S."
The Wii will have a better launch lineup though. Anyone know how many Gamecube were produced worldwide in that timeframe?
