Title: Favorite (Visual) Artist?
Post by: Spinnzilla on November 25, 2008, 12:49:06 AM
Anybody dig art here?  I like it enough to major in it.

My personal Favorites:
Max Ernst
Favorite Piece: L'Ange du foyer ou Le Triomphe du surréalisme (1937)
Salvador Dali
Favorite Piece: Geopoliticus Child Watching the Birth of the New Man(1943)
M.C. Escher
Favorite Piece: Rind (1955)
Leonardo Da Vinci (primarily his sketch work)
Favorite Piece: Study of the Womb
Georges  Barque
Favorite Piece: Man With a Guitar (1911)
René Magritte
Favorite Piece: Golconda(1953)

As you can probably tell, i'm a pretty big fan of surrealism.

Norman Rockwell, no need to list anything he's done.

George Perez
Dave McKean
Simon Bisley
Bill Sienkiewicz
Joe Quesada
M.C. Escher

Yeah, my circle of influence is rather limited. I do have a great respect for the masters, my tastes are just a bit modern (I was going to add ' and simplistic', but the 3 painters on my list are anything but).

I'm a fan of Impressionism, particularly Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir...

Salvador Dali. The one with the guy carrying a cross in front of a parade of horses and castle carrying elephants.

Neal Adams
Carmine Infantino
Bob Ross

I don't know a lot of artists by name. Or names of pictures. I see stuff I like and like it. Bugger who does it.

OMG, Carmine Infantino was the bane of my comic book loving existance. How you can list him with Neal Adams is beyond logic. I'd put Gil Kane ahead of Infantino.

I also dig surrealism.  Magritte is my favorite of the lot.

Are we just naming painters, or any form of visual art?

If we're talking art style, the only ones I don't dig are realism, still life, and portraits (Mona Lisa is more surreal than real). Photos have done a wonderful job of replacing that art style in my mind.

Those style always bore me. I'm more of a fan of thick brush strokes and heavy contrast. Something that makes the painting pop out with texture.

Rodin.

That's Rodin the sculptor, not Rodan, the giant winged monster.

Instant win in my book for a Toho Kaiju reference. :P

And, we're talking about any kind of artist.  Just painters are who I dig the most.
