Top 5 Metroid Games
« on: August 29, 2016, 01:43:32 PM »

Because Mario went so well.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/video/43289/top-5-metroid-games

Well we did it again. We asked our Patreon supporters and staff to sort through the fantastic collection of games that is the Metroid series and pick the very best one. It was a tough choice as many of the titles in this series (including those that didn't even make it into the top five) are often scored as perfect 10/10 games. You can watch the video below, and if you scroll down even farther you can see the complete ranking of every game in the series. Please note that this voting was performed before the release of Metroid Prime: Federation Force so it is not included in this list. That being said we'd love to know where you'd rank it, so leave your list in the comments!

Remember you can vote on lists like this by supporting our Patreon. You can also stay up to date with all the latest videos from NWRTV by subscribing here.

Keep scrolling down for the complete list.

here it comes.

Keep in mind this will spoil the video if you didn't already watch it.

are you sure?

alright here it is.

Behold!

Full ranking:

1. Metroid: Zero Mission

2. Metroid Prime

3. Super Metroid

4. Metroid: Fusion

5. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

6. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

7. Metroid: Other M

8. Metroid

9. Metroid II: Return of Samus

10. Metroid Prime: Pinball

11. Metroid Prime: Hunters

Agree with the top 2 but totally disagree with the rest.

My opinion which will be unpopular.

1) Zero Mission
2) Prime
3) Hunters.  Yeah you heard me.  The multiplayer was great.  It was pretty mind blowing for a handheld and is still one of the best shooters on handheld.
4) Prime 2.  The single player was challenging in an enjoyable way and again I really enjoyed the multiplayer.  It was a nice break from halo 2 matches back in Xmas 2004.
5) The original.  It's obtuse as hell but simple it's design and concept in a fun way.

I guess I'm the only person that actually likes the metroid multiplayer experiments.

I also think Super Metroid is over rated.  But maybe that's cause I was a Genesis kid.

Are you guys nuts??? This is a great ranking except for 1 thing... it doesn't include Federation Force (yes I realize that few people have played it at this point; I wish it was there because since I seem to agree with the list in general if Federation Force was on it it would help me determine if I should buy it)

The polling period was before Federation Force came out, unfortunately.

Your list isn't too horribly far off from my personal list actually. I love Hunters! And honestly I'd say Super Metroid (while historically important) is, from a game design standpoint, somewhat inferior to its 2D successors. Much like Mario 64 I think it defined a genre but has since been greatly improved on.

Zero Mission and Super Metroid are a bit of a toss up for me.  Mechanically Zero Mission improves on Super Metroid so in theory it should be better.  But Zero Mission holds your hand a lot more with hints and such.  I think Super Metroid really nailed it in how it didn't hold your hand but still was intuitive enough to figure out where to go on your own.  I think the 16 bit era in general was when games hit a great balance between not being outright cruel to the player like in the NES days and being accommodating without treating gamers like idiots.  We lost that quickly and games will blatantly tell you exactly what to do for fear of you getting stuck.  Super Metroid is not unfair but also gives the gamer some credit and expects them to figure things out.

If I was to point a rookie game developer to a game to learn from I would pick Super Metroid over Zero Mission.  Though I don't think they go down a bad path with Zero Mission, they would just learn a bit better from Super.

For the most part though the list is solid... except entry 7 which should be last by a mile or at least well below Metroid 1 and 2.

I think AM2R deserved an honorable mention in there somewhere.

My favorite Metroid is my first, Metroid Prime. I also really dug Metroid: Zero Mission, Metroid Prime Hunters, Super Metroid, and Metroid Fusion. Heck, I even enjoyed Metroid: Other M. Plus, I really like Federation Force and Pinball, too.

1. Metroid Prime Federation Force
2. Metroid Prime Federation Force
3. Metroid Prime Pinball
4. Metroid Prime Federation Force
5. Metroid Prime Federation Farce Is this a typo or what you wanted?

Although I'd have probably swapped numbers 3 and 4 but still that's a solid ranking.
