I'm sure these Nintendo Friend Tokens will be a great way to play games with others on Nintendo Switch Online!

Who needs those old Nintendo Friend Codes from past systems and their weak ass 16 digit limit. I'm ready for 64 bit Nintendo Friend Tokens I have to exchange with others to play Animal Crossing and Mario Kart with!

General Gaming / Parenthood, Kids, & Gaming
« on: August 12, 2021, 06:47:45 PM »
So been meaning to post a thread like this for a while since I am a father now. Would love to heal other's thoughts and experiences with gaming once you became a parent.

How has it changed your play style and game preferences?

When did you introduce (or plan to introduce) gaming to your kids?

What games and systems do you recommend for various age groups?

Best family games?

I had always hoped to do a chronological introduction to game systems from NES and every year or so introduce another in their release order like some have talked about doing. But if I also plan to keep up with modern systems I know that could muddy the waters on this sort of introduction method. Also eventually they will have friends that play modern games so how long could I even maintain this restriction? I'd have to make it a faster pace than I originally planned.

What's everyone else's experiences with raising kids and games?

A perfect name for the Funhouse. Nintendo discontinued it so we should pick up the banner and make this the NEW Nintendo Switch Online Lounge Service.

Nintendo Gaming / Games you DON'T want to see come out
« on: June 15, 2021, 01:19:33 PM »
We are always talking about what we want to see come out, but would be fun to have a discussion of the opposite. What games do we NOT want to see announced. There can be various reasons for this as well. Maybe a series has wrapped up its story and like a good TV show, needs to wind down to end of a good note, or maybe you feel the series gets recognition it doesn't deserve and resources should go to something better. Or maybe you don't have faith a current dev team in existence could ever do a sequel justice (Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross as an example of a sequel that didn't stick the landing).

I do not want another Mario Kart for a good while. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still a solid game that hits pretty much all of the MK notes a system installment needs. Sure, they could try something new to refresh the game/genre, but I'd rather see Nintendo focus on other great racing titles. F-Zero, Diddy Kong/Donkey Kong Racing, Excite Bike/Truck/Bots. There are plenty of ways Nintendo could scratch the racing itch while also meeting other needs on the system.

Another series I have no desire to see is another Golden Sun. I think aside from being a pretty demo of the GBA graphical capabilities it was a very basic and lackluster set of games. This is also borne out of me not wanting to see Issac or whoever from the series in Smash as there are more deserving games and series that deserve representation.

What about everyone else? What games do you NOT want to see sequels to? What is better off left in the past?

I've been swamped with dealing with a newborn, but I did preorder this. Looking forward to getting to play with everyone in the coming weeks. Who else has picked it up and what are everyone's thoughts so far?

Movies & TV / Mandoverse: Disney's Other 'Cinematic Universe'
« on: January 25, 2021, 05:41:11 PM »
Figure it will be worth starting a thread for the new Star Wars "Mandalorian Cinematic Universe" shows like we have for Marvel.

Anyone else been enjoying Mando and excited for the new series of shows? I'm pumped to see the build up towards Thrawn and on the hype train for seeing Heir to the Empire come out of it.

Also hoping to see the rise and rebirth of the Mandalorians seeing them become a power in the galaxy once again. This was covered much later in the old EU novels but having them rise up sooner could make for some great conflicts between them and the Imperial Remnant and the New Republic, as well as an introduction to the Chiss Ascendancy.

Also hoping to see Rogue Squadron be a telling of the taking of Coruscant, since that occurred during the Rogue Squadron books.

What hopes and theories do you all have for the new Star Wars shows?

8
Which character are you most excited to play as? I'll be playing as Cat Waluigi!

So I've got to thinking about the Nintendo Year In Review. Thinking it would be fun to make gaming predictions for our play habits in the new year. What will everyone's most played games be? To account for the theoretical game releases I would say lets increase it from top 5 to top 10 or even just your top-whatever list since it's kind of a guess what will even release this year between Nintendo's typical secretiveness and slower development times and the new normalcy of pandemic-related elays.

With a child on the way later this year, turn based games are sure to dominate the list since I'll more easily be able to pick-up and drop as needed for caretaking.

I'll list mine off in no particular order:

1: Fire Emblem 3 Houses - Partway through a Golden Deer playthough. I've done a Black Eagles playthrough already and plan to attempt at least three more runs for the other two options as well as a replay of Black Eagles WITH the added DLC since I missed that when I did it the first time. Hope to at least finish Golden Deer and one more route on the game this year.

2: Monster Hunter Rise - Because that will probably be one of the few real time online multiplayer games I attempt to play this year.

3: Breath of the Wild 1 & 2 - I still need to complete #1 in anticipation of #2 so I'll include both on the list.

4: Picross S 1-4 - Puzzle games like this will surely be at the forefront as a good calming game between bigger matters going on, and Picross S1 was already a

5: Pikmin 3 - got this for Christmas and my wife and I are working through the co-op together and she's really invested in it, so this may be one of the only games we get around to playing together

6: Civilization 6 - I played this a fair deal when it released, and I've been holding out for the DLC to drop in price to pick it up and return to the game as a whole.

7: Metroid Prime Trilogy - Believe this will release this year once they have a better idea when Prime 4 will be coming as a way to garner excitement.

8: Something in the racing genre - I imagine (hope) Nintendo releases another racing game like Diddy Kong Racing or F-Zero so I'll be looking out for that.

9: Animal Crossing will probably be a contender as my entire direct family and some extended members are playing it a lot, but I've already experienced the burnout so not confident on its ability to stay in the top rankings for me.

10: A Pokemon Game - Pokemon is turn-based soa plus for me. We are either getting a remake of the Gen 4 titles or Let's Go Maril/Mareep/Togepi so those could be prime contenders, but I've also held off on getting Sword/Shield and would bite on that if I could nab the game and its DLC for a good price (<$40 would do it for me).

11: Something Mario - I doubt Mario 3D World will be the only Mario title this year but if it is then I'll probably return to 3D All-Stars to finish Sunshine and play Galaxy

12: Something Zelda - it is Zelda's 35th Anniversary and I expect some treatment akin to the Mario 35 celebration. So I'll surely play something out of that, and if not then will probably pick up Age of Calamity if the price is right or play the original Hyrule Warriors in it's place.

13: Skyrim and/or Witcher 3 - Skyrim is another easy to pickup-and-play game for me and I've got a lot to do in that game still, or I may finally boot up my Witcher game that I got and play that instead.

I'll cut it off there, but curious what others see as their "big time" games for the year.

General Chat / NWR Among Us Mafia Game?
« on: December 06, 2020, 05:13:09 PM »
So I finally picked up Among Us. Not played a round yet but thinking it would be fun to attempt to run a "NWR Mafia" edition with folks here. Anyone else game to give it a go?

12
So I was all on the train for 3D All Stars and pre-ordered, but the morning after I'm feeling some doubts. I realize I have access to all of these on the original systems easily. Also, it looks like these are only marginally upscaled ports, so I'm wondering if it would even be a good deal as a convenience charge to play on a current system.

Has the de-compiled Mario 64 project spoiled me? That offers 60fps 4k with boosted asset, and modders are quickly adding the extra content from the DS version.

Especially with the "All Stars" moniker, it got me thinking about the one that is free on the SNES Online app. That one was a collection of  4 (5 if you could the Mario World combo) games, and all of them received upgraded assets and other improvements.

Feels like we should be getting more bang for our buck at $60. If they didn't want to go through the effort of adding the Mario 64 DS features to the original, they could have thrown in the Wii U DS version as a bonus. And the omision of Galaxy 2 was pretty big. Are there any other games that could have fit in there (that weren't ported separately).

What are your thoughts on it? Are you buying all of the Nintendo up-ports? I've bought a few of the ports (Lego City Undercover, Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart, and Captain Toad come to mind) but I've been (and will be) holding off on some of the other ports in the hopes of a better deal (NSMBU, SM3DW, Pikmin 3). I've also double dipped on occasion (Mario Kart, Lego City, Hyrule Warriors).

As it stands I may cancel my pre-order since that is now possible. Only thing I'd miss out on is probably the exclusive pin set.

General Gaming / Skyrim Thread
« on: May 12, 2019, 12:57:32 PM »
Skyrim is more than worth playing on it's own.

Do we have a Skyrim thread? I played a bunch of it on Switch, but not sure if I posted about it.

I swear there was one, but search turned up none, so this will be a good spot.

I simply adore that game. I played it and Breath of the Wild interchangeably, and I'm hoping they both take ideas from each other for their future iterations.

Horses in Skyrim are so broken that it allowed me to cheese my way to some areas on mountains I should not have gotten myself to.

14
I'm loving the throwback of Turok on Switch. It is everything I hoped from a touched up port pretty much. The added gyro controls are a perfect touch. Gives me an itch to play other old school shooters, so I'm pumped to get Turok 2 and hope that 3 and Rage Wars follow.

But what other games from the N64 library would be good candidates for similar remasters? What small tweaks would you add to improve them? What games could stand some graphical touch ups and be made available on the eShop?

The same studio also remastered Forsaken, which I loved, so that would be a good candidate for Switch.

Shadows of the Empire is another that would be playable today with some touch ups.

Nintendo Gaming / Minecraft is Better Together

Anyone other than Mop it up and myself playing this much? Anyone want to build a world together (again)?

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia 78: Game Over and Get Out
« on: August 04, 2018, 12:42:08 AM »
Well, things keep getting stranger and stranger, and taken a turn for the worst. While we were determining the final winner of the port contest, the contestants took it upon themselves to unmask another mole. Nickmitch, the BotW Action Nullifier, is being returned to Nintendo as we speak.

Additionally, we stumbled upon another crime in progress, Lucario, aka Mario Kart 8 the Mafia Vote Manipulator, was found tied up with his blue shell stuffed in his mouth. Clearly this was the work of an unknown Vigilante. Thankfully we found him in time, and he is safely back at Nintendo HQ.

So, it seems our final contestants are Genesis Mega Collection (Kickstarter Vigilante), Conquests of Camelot (Star Wars Battle Front 2 Townie Whore), and Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival (Townie). Thank you for your participation and we do apologize for the hardships you had to endure this week.

Unfortunately, we received yet another series of letters from Nintendo’s legal team (the first we mentioned before, and the second I am sure you read about today in our typical messages). It turns out that this entire operation was going on without their consent or approval, and this entire program has been served a Cease & Desist message. It turns out the so called “Nintendo Mafia” were informants of the Nintendo Legal Team, hence why they were all returned safely to their care and released from police custody. There was not enough evidence to prove those titles committed any wrong doing. Considering their crushing legal arm, we are termination this contest and there will be no porting contracts handed out by our studio.

My last request and action as the host of this event is to please get off Panic Button Games’ property immediately or security will escort you off and call police to Trespass you from the studio. Now if you will excuse me, I must go clean off my desk and freshen up my resume, because I have also been asked to leave the studio due to this series of unfortunate events. I wish you good fortunes; perhaps Super Rare Games would be willing to review your Switch porting requests.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia 78: Day 4 - Zoinks! It was you all along!
« on: August 03, 2018, 01:12:56 AM »
Well these have been an odd few days! Management is not pleased with these “incidents” at all, and it may be my job on the line after their internal investigation is complete.

There was another argument among the contestants, and suddenly people were tearing at one of the player’s faces! It played out like an old Scooby Doo villain reveal. BeautifulShy was held down and when her mask was removed it was none other than Mario Mario, the Godfather of Nintendo. What a surprise!

But that was just the beginning of this night’s rollercoaster! Oh no, we’re just getting warmed up! No sooner is Mario escorted off by police than we hear someone screaming from the breakroom like Xena: Warrior Princess. Everyone rushed in to find Stevey dead. Stevey, the Killer, was frozen in Stasis with the Dagger of Amon Ra plunged into his back with a note attached spelling the word “Revenge”.

So now our murder count has increased! And we have a mafia and now a rogue vigilante on the loose! And I’m still expected to select a new project, as management thinks that is the only way we can salvage this situation.

UGH! Fine! Here are today’s questions:
  • How much will it cost to port your game?
  • How much time will it take to port it?
  • If your game was a song, what would it be?

Summary:
BeautifulShy, the Mario Odyssey Godfather, voted out by Townies
Stevey, the Limited Run Games Killer, murdered by the Vigilante

Final Vote Tally:
Mop it up - 2
Beautiful Shy - 4

We had an interesting time last night at the after-party, as a fight broke out among the contestants. People seemed dead-set on hanging Pokepal148, but everyone was slipped a $20 Origin credit and the warpath was quickly forgotten. After the afterparty, a few of us hit up the bar for additional drinks, but we lost sight of a few people. By the time the development studio got back to the office there was already a host of police swarming the scene.
Despite having avoided a deadly encounter with the towns-folk, it seems someone wasn’t fully satisfied with the outcome of last night, as Pokepal the Townie, was found dead in his room.
But that was not the only reason police were on site, as now we are questioning the effectiveness of our security team and camera system. For it was discovered that another person was not present in the morning. We checked her room, only to confirm our worst fears. For lolmonade aka Laura Bow the Investigator, was dead as well. She was found with a large quantity of green and red mushrooms shoved into her mouth, her cap torn up on the floor.

Considering these pressing issues, we will not carry out today’s activities. Instead, the police would like to know the following:

Where were you last night?
What was your involvement in the almost deadly fight last night that ended in a draw?
What did you have at the after-party?
What did you drink at the bar?
When was the last time you saw either of the victims last night?
Who were you with throughout the night?

Town Whore tied the vote, saving Pokepal from the lynch mob.
Pokepal the Townie hit by Killer
Lolmonade the Investigator hit by Mafia

BeautifulShy: 1

*Since I did not specify what happens in a tie nothing happens (which was close to what I intended, but I forgot to add to the final rules)

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia 78: Day 2 - Security Concerns in the Office
« on: August 01, 2018, 01:11:36 AM »
Thank you for participating in our initial questionnaire. Now, before we move on to the next round of the selection process, we have a few house-keeping rules to attend to.
Someone apparently thought it would be a funny prank to take a dump on our receptionists’ desk last night. But thankfully the money Bethesda has given us for our work on Doom and Wolfenstein allowed us to invest in a new, state of the art security camera system.

ESPN MLS ExtraTime 2002, while we are a playful bunch, and love pranks and jokes, this crosses a line. Mrs. Johnson is a sweet woman and did not deserve this kind of treatment, especially after you gobbled so many of her taffy candies when we signed you in yesterday. Please leave immediately, we have already called the police and will be filing a report with them.
Additionally, we received a Cease & Desist letter from Nintendo's Mafia-like lawyers. It turns out that the F-Zero X Expansion Kit was being pitched by a group of dedicated fans, and we may no longer pursue consideration of your project since it does not have the blessing of Nintendo. While escorting them out of the building, security discovered that they were armed with a scalpel and a forged medical license. It appears they were moonlighting as Doctor Stiles!

Now that that unpleasant business is out of the way, on to today’s interview questions.
>What is your favorite game to play on your down time (besides the game you are pitching)?
>What is your dream game to develop that you have not made yet?
>If you got to pick one of the other contestants’ games to be ported instead of yours which would it be and why?
>Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?

Summary
ESPN MLS ExtraTime 2002 (Townie) voted out by the townies.
F-Zero X Expansion Kit (Doctor) hit by Mafia.

Welcome to Mafia 78! This is just a prep day. Day 1 starts Tuesday.

Switch frenzy is heating up this summer!
Fans are clamoring for ports of their favorite games, regardless of the technical feasibility of the port. Emboldened by the release of titles like Doom and Wolfenstein 2, it seems the sky is the limit when it comes to port potential.

Synopsis
Players in this game will sign up as a game they would love to see ported to the Switch. All titles are welcome regardless of the legal or technical viability. Dream big! Role play as the personality you think the game exudes, or role play as a hardcore fan of that game, or as the game’s developer!

Because of the high demand for games to be ported, Panic Button has announced a drawing for games to be selected for the process. The games lined up here are waiting to get a ticket and hear who will be selected. Some games are more desperate to be ported than others, and a few may resort to...unsavory tactics to ensure they are selected.

There are also premier Nintendo titles who do not want to share the limelight with these third-party titles. They have done their best to keep the 3rd parties away, but the runaway success of the Switch is making it more and more difficult to keep them at bay.

Teams and Roles

Unported Games (Townies) - These are all the games who have hopes and dreams to be ported to the successful Nintendo Switch. Their goal is to survive until the drawing and learn if they are a winner.

Laura Bow [The Dagger of Amon Ra] (Investigator)

Laura Bow is the star of the Roberta Williams (King's Quest creator) mystery title The Dagger of Amon Ra. She is a Southern belle who had just graduated from Tulane University and moved to New York City, where she landed a job at a prestigious newspaper. For her first assignment, she was asked to write a straightforward, lightweight story on a benefit held at a local museum to celebrate their new Egyptian exhibit. When a murder occurs during the party, however, she is locked inside with all of the other suspects. As other guests begin dying one by one, Laura must solve the numerous crimes occurring before the culprits escape or kill her.

Laura's power is to "investigate" any active player. She will get a PM with the role of the player. If it is the godfather it will come back as a townie.

Doc - Dr Derek Stiles [Trauma Center games] (Doctor)

Dr Stiles is a world renowned surgeon, having saved tens of thousands of lives and saving the world from bio-terrorist hazards with his "Healing Touch". Once a day he can use his gift to save another player from a hit from the killer or the Mafia.

One time power: Gift of Asclepius - can override the vote to save any one person who was voted out, even himself. If something invalidates the need for this power it will not count as used (say vote changer

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (Town Whore)

Whore of High Garden - Can break any tie after voting ends, choosing which way the vote falls between those who tied.

Kickstarter - Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (Killer - YES I KNOW IT IS COMING...but the perpetual delay is the joke here)

Townie Vigilante, but cannot use powers until they have received 4 votes against them cumulatively (self votes do not count, you would out yourself anyways)

1st Party Games (Mafia) - These games do not want to share the spotlight with quality 1st party titles. They will work to eliminate all competition.

Godfather – Mario Odyssey, Investigation will come up as townie, gets to put in a "hit" every day, to take effect after the end-of-day

Action Nullifier - Breath of the Wild: use Stasis to halt a player from taking an action that day

Vote manipulator - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Blue Shell targets person with the most votes and gives them an extra vote while invalidating th(mafia or townie, so be careful!)

Limited Run Games (Killer) – Limited Run Games is gobbling up games and providing them with limited physical releases, which is a bane for many physical game collectors. They got to put out a "hit" on any game unpublished on the Switch.
Special Rule Notes

Order of operations:
Day Actions are all actions that can be given at anytime before end-of-day (thread lock).
The exceptions (Killer/Godfather hits, BotW Stasis, Blue Shell, Whore of High Garden and the Doctor's Healing Touch) can be issued at night and will be referred to as Night Actions, even though the orders can be given during the daytime.

INVESTIGATIONS happen when they send in and have until I respond to change their mind. So as close to instant, but don't expect faster than a 2-3 hour turnaround.

Action order will go as so: Votes tallied, effects/powers applying to votes, Gift of Asclepius, Healing Touch, Hits (order of hits based on order they are submitted). Outlier Decision: On the off chance the killer hits first and hits the doctor and the doctor was protecting the Mafia target (or vice versa) then the Doctor's protection will not last to protect the target, so the order of the hits can matter.

End-of-day will be 9PM PDT. If thread is not locked at that time, play will continue for that day until the time it is locked and all actions taken during this "bonus time" will be valid.

Night actions may be entered in anytime after the day begins, up until 30 minutes after thread-lock. They may be changed anytime up until 30 minutes after thread-lock.

Beginning-of-day will be when the new day thread is posted. Typically this will be by 10PM hopefully, but may occasionally be held over until the next morning, but no later than 6:30AM PDT. If it is held later, then extra time will be given at night to make up for the open period lost.

Thinking we can start the game on the 23rd unless we think we need more time. I'll close signups on the 21st/22nd so I have time to finish prep on the weekend.

Gonna delay the game one more week, something came up in life, and I would love it if we got a few more players. Day Zero will kick off this coming weekend and Day 1 on July 30th.

ITS COMING!

Hope to see you all making the switch come August 28th! I'll be done and graduated in a new -normal hours- job, so I'm planning to be back in force!
