No matter how tempting the 360 may be, the fact you have to pay in order to play it online is a no sale for me.

But on the other hand, if you're a single-player only type of gamer there are some good games worth buying on the 360.  You don't need LIVE for that.

I know. I understand that and I've considered that, but if I'm going to treat the 360 as a secondary or tertiary system which I only play a handful of games on and never take it online then I'm going to wait until I can get it for like $99 or something. The 250GB model is still $299 (not counting the deals).

Yeah, that's pretty much what my 360 is for.  It's my XBLA, Tales of Vesperia, Alan Wake, etc. system.

Speaking of which, I really wish they'd make a Kinect-less version of The Gunstringer, as I'd really like to play that.  I'd want Disneyland Adventures, too, but that game looks like crap from the Giant Bomb Quick Look.  But there's no way I'm getting a Kinect.

Almost 200k in its first week in Japan. That's a bit better than what Twilight Princess (Wii) did, I think?

As I expected, it looks like the Japanese aren't quite taking to Skyward Sword like NA did.

EDIT: And I continue to be supremely disappointed by the low sales of Ni No Kuni.  I wonder why it's selling so badly? It's a monster-collecting JRPG with Studio Gibli designs. If they aren't going to buy it, no one will.

And on the Japan side of things.
http://www.siliconera.com/2011/12/06/mario-kart-7-boosts-over-450k-during-first-week-in-japan/

Quote
Famitsu magazine publisher, Enterbrain, have an early report on one of last week’s major Japan releases: Mario Kart 7, released on December 1st. Enterbrain say that in its first week, Mario Kart 7 sold 451,932 copies in Japan.

It also gave Nintendo 3DS system sales a large boost. The 3DS sold 216,350 units during the same week. We’ll have more detailed numbers from Media-Create as per usual on Wednesday (note that they will likely differ slightly from Enterbrain’s).

The amount of 3DS systems and Mario Kart 7 copies sold is just silly. I should have expected them to do well.

That's a big 83 percent dip for Skyward Sword. I guess that's to be expected.

Ah, Kirby's Return to Dreamland and PokePark 2 are climbing up in the charts.

LTD the 3DS is beating:
The 360 and now the DSiXL (I'm assuming that is what LL means)

Now lets look at YTD and Last YTD  We'll use whats larger and the 3DS Beats:
Oh, it beated everyone.

That looks promising.  I didn't think last year was a super slump year.

In the case of Skyward Sword it's tracking pretty similar to what Twilight Princess did when it was released, so Skyward Sword could at least be able to hit the 500k mark.  Of course I wonder if because of Motion+ controls the game be too complicated for the Japanese audience which could hurt it's word of mouth.  3D Mario games sell less than 2D Mario because jumping around in a 3D environment with a joystick is considered too much for the Japanese, so I imagine having to move Link around in 3D and while swinging the Wiimote from different angles just to fight basic enemies is going to be a nightmare for a lot of them.

I'm not sure that Japanese gamers feel that jumping around in 3D is too much, could it be that those games just don't appeal to them like the 2D ones?  I mean, Nintendo's done plenty in the last couple 3D games making them "friendlier", without any noticeable response.

As for SS, I don't know what could be considered complicated about the controls.  Swinging the wiimote is pretty intuitive, and doesn't require any explanation...

2D Marios do considerably better than the 3D ones in the West as well; it's not just Japan.

Yup. It's universal. Facts are facts: 2D is easier to deal with than 3D.

It's a real shame then that the recent 2D games aren't at anywhere near the same level as the recent 3D Marios.

Or even the old 2D Marios.   ;)

Well yeah, but that's 20 years ago at this point. In just the last six years Nintendo has made five Mario games, two 2D and three 3D. The 2D games are good, especially the latter one, but all three of the 3D games blow them out of the water.

Mario games used to be spaced out further apart. When you churn them out at this fast of a rate its inevitable that the incredibly high quality is going to come down at least a little bit. At least so far we haven't seen anything as bad as Mario in Time or Mario is Missing like 20 years ago, but if Nintendo keeps milking the franchise maybe that won't be too far off.
is your sanity...

To be fair, Nintendo had little to do with those. They did not develop them, and only published the NES versions (Mindscape published the SNES versions). It would be like blaming them for how crappy the CDi games were.
