I only opened Tears of the Kingdom to claim the My Nintendo Gold Points, and I haven't bought Super Mario Bros. Wonder or Super Mario RPG.

I am surprised the coins were still available. I recently opened Fire Emblem Engage and the gold coins were already expired  :'(
I know it is an older game, but I am not that late to the party.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What will Nintendo release in 2024?
« on: January 13, 2024, 12:50:49 PM »
Here are my predictions for 2024:
  • Nintendo's next video game console will be announced in the summer and released in the fall
  • This new console will support backwards compatibility for Switch games, but not for Switch joy con
  • The new console will be a hybrid console like the switch, however, there will be a way to use the screen on the console as a second screen while playing on the TV
  • One of the games for the new console will be Super Mario Odyssey 2 and will release this year
  • Another game for the new console will be a game from Good Feel using an existing Nintendo IP
  • Another game for the new console will be Mario Kart 9
  • Square Enix will announce an HD2D version of Chrono Trigger
  • Concerning the games we already know about, I predict that Paper Mario TTYD will release before Luigi's Mansion 2
  • For the Nintendo Switch Online service, Conker's Bad Fur day gets put on the N64 expansion pack
  • Finally, following the commercial success of the Super Mario Bros. movie, we get a trailer for the Donkey Kong Movie

If any of these feel too vague or obvious let me know and I would be glad to spice them up.

General Gaming / Games Beaten, Completed, or Played in 2023

With 2023 officially over it is time to start another year of gaming. What better time then to post your records of games played, beaten, or completed. Personally I like to hear what system the games were played on, how long they took, whether you beat them any% or 100%, and if they were first plays or replays. Of course, feel free to post as little or as much as you want.

I think a rating system should be implemented. A five star rating system that is only becomes available once you have purchased and played a game for a certain amount of time. No written reviews are necessary but could be an option. I think this would help some of the great indies rise to the top of the pile.

Sega announced that new entries in five existing franchises were in development: Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Crazy Taxi. While no specific platforms were mentioned, I would think some of these projects would be released on the next Nintendo console.

I probably should have figured that out. I don't remember having my own post regurgitated back at me before.  When I thought it was a spambot copying the words of someone else on the internet I thought maybe I have a like minded soul out there. Now I just feel violated.

I cast my vote for Horizon Forbidden West both here and at The Game Awards, where you can select up to ten choices. However, I'd like to highlight Stray, currently in my backlog and holding the spot as my most anticipated game from the backlog. While I'm still completing Sackboy, I hope to dive into Stray soon. Although I was content with the PS4 version of The Last of Us and didn't enjoy the previous God of War as much as many others, I don't have plans to acquire either of those.
It's crazy how much this matches my situation from last year. I was the one person who voted for Forbidden West, I had Stray in my backlog, I was still working on Sackboy, and I passed on Last of Us and God of War for the same reasons mentioned above.

The only thing that would keep me from picking Dave the Diver here is questions over the definition of indie. It's one of my favorite games this year period, and almost certainly in my overall top 5 alongside the big hits from Nintendo.
Yeah, after watching checkpoint from last week I realize that I should have listened to Evan_B and moved it to Multiplatform game. If the any mods want to magically make that happen  ;)  would not object.
Alternatively everyone can vote Dave the Diver and have it win best Indy just to spotlight my mistake further  ;D

General Gaming / Re: 2023 NWR Forum Awards - Best Indie Game
« on: December 05, 2023, 05:26:53 PM »
This is a tough category. Not just because the definition of an indie game is nebulous, but the number of indie games is so great that many do not get reviewed anymore. I tried to comb through the NWR reviews and include anything with a 9 or higher to get this list. Some of these I have not even hear of otherwise.
I will say that Cocoon is on my wish list having loved Inside and Limbo. Rakuen is also on my wish list. I feel like as my backlog has gotten worse, these digital only games have seemed to fall behind compared with ones that get a physical version.
I tried playing the first Moving Out but it seemed to be so much harder than Overcooked. Maybe the second one is a more balanced experience.
Sea of Stars, Cocoon, Dave the Diver, Dredge, and Viewfinder comprise the nominees from The Game Awards. The Game Awards actually has two indie awards, with one specifically for new studios.

47
Has anyone picked up a Meta Quest 3 yet? If so I am wondering how much better it is than the second gen model.

I thought that Octopath Traveler II was a switch exclusive until I prepared this event. It also feels like that game came out sometime before this year. Theatrhythm was another one that seems like it could have been switch only. This was suppose to be a place for all the non-tendo games, but most of these are available on switch.
Diablo IV is the one I am most interested in. I picked up a copy during the recent sales for PS5. I am hoping to play it online with a friend but it is still on my backlog.
Baldur's Gate 3 is probably the frontrunner in most game awards but not necessarily with this one. I do think Street Fighter has a really cool art style and sometimes just watch people playing on Twitch.

It was surprising how long this list was. We certainly do live in an age of recycled media, which can be nice. The one game on here I have played is the Mega Man collection. I only played the first Battle network game but really appreciate its existence, having not owned a GBA.
I picked up Metroid Prime day 1 but it is still on my backlog. Having played the original a few years ago, I am not in a hurry to revisit it yet. Advance Wars is on my wish list, and I will probably pick it up when it drops to $30.
Kirby's Return to Dreamland is probably my favorite Kirby game, but I am fine with the Wii version. I am playing Etrian Odyssey 4 on 3DS currently and its great, but I certainly don't need three more of those on my backlog. I am interested in the Metal Gear games, but I did not hear good things about this collection on switch. Persona 4 I have on Vita (backlog) and Mario RPG I have on the SNES mini (also backlog).

This is a decent line up of switch exclusives for the year. I managed to play Cereza and the Lost Demon, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. They are all amazing games so it was a tough choice. I do have Fire Emblem on my backlog and Illusion Island on my wish list (it never really got a price cut on black Friday).
You might think that Zelda will easily win this award, but I have heard some folks saying Mario is their GOTY. Both of those games are up for something at The Game Awards on Thursday. I will probably report any winners here on Friday. Still plenty of time to vote and chime in on Switch exclusives for 2023.
