I think it'll sell by the bucket-load, like all the EA sequels. It will look good, play okay-ish and ultimately be uninspired and insipid, shallow, bargain-bin fodder.
And we'll love it...

Got Most Wanted today. 1st impressions are that it's NFS Underground 2, but in daytime. At least the handling is miles better than Hot Pursuit 2.

Good call on VP.

Switch off the signals that identified the other contestants and bear with the huge laptimes and you have a pretty decent DC racer. IMO Test Drive: Le Mans 24HR was the benchmark DC racer. I don't know if you guys got that game on your side of the pond, but that and Ferarri were my favourite racing games for the Sega lump.

Anyway, back on topic, I'm still waing for NFS: Most Wanted. Any of you guys played it on GC?

It was a landmark title for the Dreamcast at the time, with (almost) photo-realistic graphics. This remains a fact regardless of anyone's personal opinion of it. (or however much you close ranks in defence of the fanboys).
I personally, didn't like it - I like track-based racers and preferred Ferarri F355 Challenge, but that's neither here nor there regarding the significance of the game. And, like its younger offspring - the PGR series, significant it was.

Good God, man. Are you mad? Thousands of man-hours of development time went into making the PGR (and MSR on Dreamcast) series one of the most realistic racers on the market. And you come along and dismiss it with a throw-away comment in a single breath just because it's not made by Nintendo. Have a bit of respect, will you?

I've just bought NFS: Most Wanted. It can only be an improvement over Hot Pursuit. Can't it????

Need for Speed Underground 2, which is kinda okay, R:Racing, which I'm getting into and Auto Modellista, which I can't take seriously. I just can't respect those cell-shaded visuals. I'm still looking.

...oh how I longed for the postman to deliver you to the open, waiting, salivating mouth of my Gamecube. Everyday I phoned home from work to see if you had appeared. Then you came into my life.....

and the mists of anticipation evaporated quicker than pseudo-friends when the coke's finished. With a frame-rate choppier than an epileptic lumberjack and cars that sound like a wasp trapped in a cookie jar, you let me down further than when my brother told me there was no Santa Clause. And the handling? Don't even mention the handling. I've driven some quality cars in my life, but never any that can't decide if they're trying to be a shopping cart or a kids toy with wheels of treacle.

Very, Very poor effort.

Hooray.

You get there in the end, eh? That's what I'm talking about. That was me in the Sega years. Master System, Mega Drive (Genesis) *cough*Mega CD, Saturn (still my favourite) and Dreamcast. Everything else was shite, IMblinkeredO. The PS2 had all the best games, but the thought of playing it gave me the same feelings as when you poke your finger through the toilet paper when wiping your ass. It's all time wasted and lost that can never be gotten back.

Choosing one system and sticking with it is not a bad thing. IMO, sticking with one system and verbally ripping to shreds anyone who disagrees with you is a bad thing. I know because I was that zealot. I look back with shame these days. In my original post I was asking if people still do that in 2006. I've spent the last few years buiding up a massive retro collection, I only recently got a 'modern' Gamecube.

General Chat / RE:How do you make your computer faster?
« on: July 09, 2006, 05:20:55 AM »
The simplest, cheapest and easiest way to speed-up your PC is to apply the Six-Month Rule. That is: get rid of EVERY app, game and software component that you haven't used for six months. Generally, if you've not used anything in that time - you're not going to. Then run the spyware, anti-virus and de-frag apps. Google for freeware PC optimising apps and run those. Go to http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php to download the best optimising/cleaning/speed-up  freeware in the world (IMO).

*note to mods - this is safe, free and legal. I use it all the time.*

Click on PC Wizard 2006 in the top left of the web page to d/l the latest version.

I think it would be a pointless venture to give Johanna or Lara poor posture, a spare tyre or flat feet. The very essence of gaming for me, is escapism and unreality (incidently, that's why I don't like war games), a fantastical look at alternative worlds where nothing is real and things can be just so. Eye candy in games need not be a bad or sexist thing. Are not most of the heroes in games handsome, rugged and perfectly formed?

does the game play from a 3rp person view like Tomb Raider, or does it have an isometric thing going on like RE? The screens make it look awesome.

Did anyone here buy it? All the mags on this side of the pond tore it to pieces, saying it was uninspired, repetetive, formulaic, unoriginal pap, but boy, does it look sweeet in the screenshots. I notice you can pick it up quite cheap on Egay, so I was hoping to get a real opinion here...

The point I was trying to make in my original post, was that, back in the day, I was way beyond simply being a fanboy. I was a zealot. I would dismiss everything out of hand, without even giving it a chance. If you cut my hand off at the wrist you could probably have read 'SEGA' in my stump like lettered-candy.

Now, years later, I'm a tad wiser (hopefully) and have realised that it's thegames that are important, not the machine. I regularly look back in shame at how I used to get all evengelical about my chosen platform - be it Atari, Sega or whatever. On a daily basis I play PSP at work, my NGPC and Gamecube at home and other stuff when I get the chance. Hell, I even buy multi-format magzines. It makes me a little sad and embarrased to read threads on forums knocking other manufacurers. Let's face it - gamers get a hard enough time from the general media without fighting amongst ourselves.
Having said that, though, theres still a tiny piece of me that's never quite forgiven Sony for the Saturn massacre.....(joke)

General Chat / RE: DS v.s. PSP
« on: July 02, 2006, 09:42:34 AM »
I got a DS on release, but I traded it for a PSP because of the racing games available for it. All my gaming life, I've been daydreaming about how cool it would be to play a proper handheld racing game. I've since bought Toca Racing Driver 2, World Rally Championship, Wipeout Pure, Colin Mcrae Rally, Ridge Racer, F1 Challenge and Burnout Legends. I'm in heaven when it comes to racers, but, tbh, there's not much else going for it that takes my fancy. Now that I've satisfied my thirst for racers, I"m looking longingly at DS Castlevania....

The fact that Sega couldn't market free sex in a whorehouse didn't help.

None of the next-gen offerings are making me excited enough to part with my cash. Right now I have no plans to buy any of them. I'm a huge fan of racing games, which is why I bought a PSP, so when I eventually do buy a new console, I'll go with the one that can fill my racing game needs.

That's a fair point. But, do you instantly jump on others who do not share your view? I used to. Now I look back in shame, tbh. It's a form of bigotry. I've managed, through the medium of car-boot sales (garage sales to you lot) and charity/thrift shops to obtain all the stuff I shunned in the past - yes, even a PS1! - and I've quickly come to realise that it's all gaming.

Oh to be the first person to throw a cart in Ebay's direction!

In David Scheff's book, 'Game Over - the Nintendo Story' he says the carts were all crushed before being encased in concrete then buried. Archaeologists of the future are going to think we were nuts.

I've read the (David Scheff) story of the event, but still thought it was an urban myth. Is there now concrete (no pun) evidence of proof??
