Children play Pokemon. Parents don't want to spend 300 dollars for their children to play Pokémon. They want their children to play Pokémon on their phones.
Could certainly see this being the case! I wonder what the audience for Pokkén Tournament is on Wii U, I mean that still moved 1 million units so it can't all be Tekken enthusiasts surely? There's bound to be some kids with that game, but yeah it arrived way later in the console's lifecycle so not fully comparable.
But would Nintendo host a direct if they're not involved, like with the mobile titles? I think the chances for a 3DS and/or Switch title are decent. Whether they'll put a mainline entry on the Switch though, even if it is the "third wheel edition"... well, maybe I guess. But there's a lot of precedent of GameFreak supporting systems towards the end of their lifecycle, so who knows it'll be Pokémon Snap 3D or something. Or Magikarp Jump with HD rumble!
