General Gaming / RE:"Portal"
« on: July 22, 2006, 11:38:31 AM »
Portal was a trip; when I first heard about it I thought people were talking about a new weapon in HL2 Ep2...I hope it turns into a full game because it shows how portals can be used well for the first time in shooters (Prey's look nice but serve little purpose beyond spawning enemies like Turok).  I've always hated the portal cliche in shooters (Doom, Metroid Prime 2, Halo, Quake, etc); it's a cheap solution to bad level design usually (in the case of developers working their way to a dead end and using the g!mmick of the portal to loop the player back around without wasting memory constructing a path back like you would find in Metroid, you would come out on a higher peak you couldn't reach before for example).  When it isn't used as duct tape the portal can make the game too complex as MP2 proved by not selling nearly as many copies as it should have.  Even veteran gamers have trouble keeping up with the mirror worlds when looking for items.

video preview

The game is number one on EGM's list of 50 best original games.  I wish Wii had more games on that list (that's all on Nintendo though).  The water effects are the best I have seen yet in a game.  These are the graphics we won't be seeing on Wii.

Beyond that the game is full on cooperative.  Even if you don't have a buddy to play with, the AI will pick up the slack.  Just check the video.  I can't give you a better preview than the developers.

Sounds frustrating to me.  And it is one reason I hate playing online games is the annoying players.

So Planetgamecube decides to provide a game environment with limitations, for open online games.  No voice chat, just games.  This provides a means for people to play the game and not be offended.

Then, the individual has the choice to add people to his personal exclusive list to gain other features.

It is a great compromise.  The only downside to the Wifi Friends System right now is it works for individual games only.  I think this will be changed for the Wii system.

And it is pretty easy to find and add friends to your list...all you have to do is hit the messageboards devoted to Nintendo and find the codes.  I have never felt inconvienced by the system.

It protects everyone...including Nintendo.

With a universal friends list (say you accumulate over time thirty) you can play only with the peeps on your friends list.

Art is like porn, I know it when I see it.

As I pointed out in my post there are games that can be talked about in a more analytical manner but you don't get that in the pages of magazines; instead they sell you the product because of the rarity of its technical quality compared to the garbage around it.  X game earns a 9 because the characters animate fluidly or Y actor delivers talkie quality voice acting or the controls are the new pink.  I think it is just evidence that most of the games that recieve average scores should be scored below 5.  If a game just meets technical standards of organic AI or killer lighting effects and doesn't go the extra step to say something, then it shouldn't recieve higher than a 7; I don't care if it is a Wii game and plays better than any 360 game, if the game is just a game about game mechanics, if it has nothing interesting or new to say, then it isn't art and if it isn't art then in my book X game would never earn higher than a 7/10 from me.  If I don't feel a game is up to literary standards of story telling, it can never be art.  When reviewers give out tens, I usually complain, because the only games I would ever give a ten to are the likes of Super Mario Bros 3 or The Legend of Zelda LttP.  There are certain games that just speak to people beyond just, are you having fun, is this not intolerable.

I'm just going to rape a blog of mine from 1up just the other day; seems like a hot topic these days...I feel like I kind of come to a dead end though...

I've read some great blogs on the subject lately and it is brought up on the 1up podcast nearly every week so I thought I would visit the subject and what it means to me for games as products and art.

It is often pointed out that reviews on sites and in gaming magazines are more product reviews than analyses of story, character development, and generally meaning. Currently games journalism can't get past the surface or the subtext is just simply too often MIA.

The game industry is still young, it is still waging a metaphorical war every five years over technology. In other mediums, like movies, all you need is a camera. In music, all you need is a guitar. Albums don't blow up on the charts because they are using a new kind of guitar (it's about the song). With games every little detail about RAM, per pixel shading, and particle effects is mulled over by journalist, fans, and I assume developers (considering they are the ones who ultimately have to talk to the latest version of HAL). The instrument of game creation and playing is still being perfected. This is why it is still an issue today that physics work realistically, the AI has imperfections (you don't want mindless drones afraid of nothing coming at you all the time), the character's feet push off the ground, the character's eyes move, clipping happens as little as possible, and framerates don't drop below 30 frames per second. There are still issues of quality in games. These issues prevent gamers from generally having fun, and when the gamer can't get past something so simple as the camera, then it is pretty hopeless to even think about what the game has to say.

Does it mean that games will not be accepted as art and games journalism will be nothing more than product reviews until the hardware reaches a level where it is about the engine more than the potential of the box, until the tools for creation are at a point where games can be made by people in a point and click fashion (look at where Spore is going), and until the interface comes to a point where it is truly transparent?

I like to argue that the hardware is only an issue if the developer lets it become one. I can analyze the first Zelda and point out allusions to Christian and Norse mythologies just like the epic of Beowulf. These kinds of games exist even today, but the reviews are still product reviews. When I read about Ico, I want to read about the archetypes, the atmosphere, and the character interaction.

Let us imagine for a moment planetgamecube with friend codes...there wouldn't be any activity in the forums; how would anyone know anyone else's friend code to be able to read their messages on the forums?  Friend codes suck as an online model.  It's hard enough to make friends with strangers during a match when you're trying to kill each other; how exactly are you going to get up a large enough friends list on a multiplayer deathmatch game like Quake?

The way I would set it up is I would offer a forum style of public meeting, clubs, and blogs like 1up.  They offer all of those services for free in addition to news, reviews, previews, videos, podcasts, web shows, and lots more.  Can't Nintendo at least get a universal friends list up for god's sakes?

Nintendo was once known for being at the forefront of multiplayer gaming; as far as online is concerned, they're still trying to design their engine while MS took off three years ago.  Furthermore, wifi is unreliable.

There is a belief that what seperates us from the rest of the animals is the spark of divinity in us all and if you isolate that which makes us "human," closer to god than the rest of the world, then you would have the power to elevate other animals to humanities level.  It's kind of the whole premise behind The Island of Dr. Moreau (who's intention was to isolate the divinity in order to cut out the animal, the demonic).

There is a great difference between humanoid and man in a suit.  The stranded alien pictures I posted originally show a creature whose body is humanoid, but the proportions are not human (like you would see in Star Wars or Star Trek).  The arms are small for starters.  You see, proportions can make something that fullfills the five extremity law still quite alien looking.  I've taken figure drawing classes and I can tell you if your proportions are off, it will look freakish, it will not look human, it may not even look like a primate.

But anyways, David Icke would say that they are alien in origin (even if it were aliens that used their DNA to transform dinosaurs), it's going to sound like the plot for Halo 3, but people claim that spark I was talking about makes us brothers to otherwise alien slave races throughout the galaxy on other planets.  That which makes us human is found in other creatures on other planets (so are they human?).  Icke would suggest that there is a type of stargate located in the holy land (Israel), and that is the motivation the pervasive ludicrous logic of the middle east.  Why does anyone care about a bunch of dry desert enough to kill each other over it.  I don't care what religion you belong to, follow your doctrines; I'm pretty sure they all have a story about a law being carved into stone by the same god they all worship which said, thou shall not kill.  You don't kill the earth and you don't kill people.

"Arikara Indian
A long time ago giants lived on the earth, and they were so strong they were not afraid of anything. When they stopped giving smoke to the gods of the four directions, Nesaru looked down upon them and was angry. "I made the giants too strong," Nesaru said. "I will not keep them. They think that they are like me. I shall destroy them by covering the earth with water, but I will save the ordinary people." "

"In Inca mythology, Viracocha destroyed the giants with a Great Flood, and two people repopulated the earth. Uniquely, they survived in sealed caves."

"Always these aliens have very terrestrial forms, and worst, humanoid forms, four apendix similar to arms and legs, two eyes, etc, which is near impossible, even if life in other planets follow the same evolutionary path that life follows here"

Many people these days are speculating, "aliens" may not exactly be so extraterrestrial.  That is kind of why I titled the thread the way I did; it is more plausible that these sentients, if they do exist, are the decendents of civilizations that have come before us (we have a very limited view of history).  Some believe there are several species including the popular greys and David Icke's Annanuki (human hybrid reptilians, most likely evolved from dinosaurs if anything, who can transform their skin to appear human).  The leaders of the world even today decended from royal bloodlines of the past, Icke uses this as proof that world leaders are a part of a "holy bloodline," thus all the inbreeding of royal families in the past and the continued rule of their decendents; we're their slaves.

Even more sickening, the motivation for all the wars in the middle east are said to be over alien technologies of some kind.  People have claimed that the true motivations for the current War in Iraq are that Saddam found a UFO that crashed there thousands of years ago (so it actually goes beyond George Bush having a vendetta).  The idea is that where there is smoke, there is the gods' fire.

Book of Enoch:  Chapter 7

1It happened after the sons of men had multiplied in those days, that daughters were born to them, elegant and beautiful.

2And when the angels, (3) the sons of heaven, beheld them, they became enamoured of them, saying to each other, Come, let us select for ourselves wives from the progeny of men, and let us beget children.

3Then their leader Samyaza said to them; I fear that you may perhaps be indisposed to the performance of this enterprise;

4And that I alone shall suffer for so grievous a crime.

5But they answered him and said; We all swear;

6And bind ourselves by mutual execrations, that we will not change our intention, but execute our projected undertaking.

7Then they swore all together, and all bound themselves by mutual execrations. Their whole number was two hundred, who descended upon Ardis, (4) which is the top of mount Armon.

10Then they took wives, each choosing for himself; whom they began to approach, and with whom they cohabited; teaching them sorcery, incantations, and the dividing of roots and trees.

11And the women conceiving brought forth giants, (7)

12Whose stature was each three hundred cubits. These devoured all which the labor of men produced; until it became impossible to feed them;

13When they turned themselves against men, in order to devour them;

14And began to injure birds, beasts, reptiles, and fishes, to eat their flesh one after another, (8) and to drink their blood.

Chapter 8

1Moreover Azazyel taught men to make swords, knives, shields, breastplates, the fabrication of mirrors, and the workmanship of bracelets and ornaments, the use of paint, the beautifying of the eyebrows, the use of stones of every valuable and select kind, and all sorts of dyes, so that the world became altered.

2Impiety increased; fornication multiplied; and they transgressed and corrupted all their ways.

3Amazarak taught all the sorcerers, and dividers of roots:

4Armers taught the solution of sorcery;

5Barkayal taught the observers of the stars, (9)

Chapter 9

1Then Michael and Gabriel, Raphael, Suryal, and Uriel, looked down from heaven, and saw the quantity of blood which was shed on earth, and all the iniquity which was done upon it, and said one to another, It is the voice of their cries;

2The earth deprived of her children has cried even to the gate of heaven.

3And now to you, O you holy one of heaven, the souls of men complain, saying, Obtain Justice for us with (10) the Most High. Then they said to their Lord, the King, You are Lord of lords, God of gods, King of kings. The throne of your glory is for ever and ever, and for ever and ever is your name sanctified and glorified. You are blessed and glorified.

(10) Obtain justice for us with. Literally, "Bring judgment to us from." (Richard Laurence, ed. and trans., The Book of Enoch the Prophet [London: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co., 1883], p. 9).

4You have made all things; you possess power over all things; and all things are open and manifest before you. You behold all things, and nothing can be concealed from you.

5You have seen what Azazyel has done, how he has taught every species of iniquity upon earth, and has disclosed to the world all the secret things which are done in the heavens.

6Samyaza also has taught sorcery, to whom you have given authority over those who are associated with him. They have gone together to the daughters of men; have lain with them; have become polluted;

7And have discovered crimes (11) to them.

(11) Discovered crimes. Or, "revealed these sins" (Charles, p. 70).

8The women likewise have brought forth giants.

9Thus has the whole earth been filled with blood and with iniquity.

10And now behold the souls of those who are dead, cry out.

11And complain even to the gate of heaven.

12Their groaning ascends; nor can they escape from the unrighteousness which is committed on earth. You know all things, before they exist.

13You know these things, and what has been done by them; yet you do not speak to us.

14What on account of these things ought we to do to them?

Chapter 10

1Then the Most High, the Great and Holy One spoke,

2And sent Arsayalalyur (12) to the son of Lamech,

(12) Arsayalalyur. Here one Greek text reads "Uriel."

3Saying, Say to him in my name, Conceal yourself.

4Then explain to him the consummation which is about to take place; for all the earth shall perish; the waters of a deluge shall come over the whole earth, and all things which are in it shall be destroyed.

5And now teach him how he may escape, and how his seed may remain in all the earth.

the giants drew worship as gods thus the judgement of the flood

The flood story is found in many cultures around the world; even the American Indians have stories of a flood and a Noah character.

It requires the sensor bar for "3D" control does it not?  I don't just want to use accelorometers; that could be done with the PS3 controller.

BROS.

On the controls, I don't want to hold the controller side ways; the sensor needs to be facing the sensor bar for full functionality; and I like to multitask (eat chips) while I play.  I think this game should be the poster boy for one handed games.

I really want RE to go back to the scares and slower pace.  I am not of the popular opinion on this but, I don't like RE4's control or camera; it would work better with its type of gameplay to be a shooter.  RE4 is a fun game, but it isn't a true Resident Evil; its the love child of Devil May Cry and Code Veronica.

I wouldn't mind if they went back and remade RE2 with eye popping prerendered backgrounds Rebirth style, allowing them to focus the wee amount of power they have on the real time characters; I would totally buy that again.  Factor in the Wii aiming, flash light, 2D character movement using the dpad; perhaps dual wielding of nude remotes.  The game was built for the dpad.

I'm afraid what we will get though is Capcom trying to shovel a lightgun game on us.  Not cool.  I want either a full fledged shooter or a back to the basics Zelda dungeon-esque Resident Evil.

Worst idea ever?  Basically taking Super Mario Bros and putting it in 3D for the first time ever, a bad idea?  Mario Galaxy has its charm and will have its niche with fans, but it isn't the game everyone has been waiting for.  I point to the success of the New Super Mario Bros on DS as my proof as to what type of Mario game people really want (even the first time it was shown, people gasped and cheered for the return of powerups and Luigi, as well as so much more).  You need to look at the gameplay of Mario Kart, it is SMB with multiplayer in vehicles.  You race to the end of a somewhat nonlinear themed track (shortcuts) gathering powerups along the way.  Mario Bros is not about getting the shine or star or whatever other stupid RareWare type scavenger hunt they may half ass through in the future.  Super Mario Bros was about a race to the end, it was the first game of capture the flag, and it never evolved beyond SMWorld in game design, until the DS (though the critics point out, no flying, and few new powerups).  So why the hoopla over NSMB?  Multiplayer, very simple.  I have a lot of old games I think are great, but the games that every friend wants to play when they are here are SMB1, 2, and 3.  The games set a standard for multiplayer from the beginning.  People like to play together.  And now it is time the series move fully into cooperative multiplayer, they have to 1up Halo, and remind the world, Nintendo stays at the forfront of multiplayer.

I would make Mario Kart on Wii a one handed game.  The B button would be gas (I wish the button were analog so it could control simple, but tilting the remote forward would work like pressing the pedal further when holding B), A would be break (pulling the remote backward while hitting A would activate emergency break), you have the dpad for other mechanics like weapons.  The motion control would control steering left and right by turning the remote.  All the original Koopa kids, cell shading, new powerups, and level editor.  Oh yeah, and plenty of online modes, optional microphone chat, before, during, and after the race, tournaments, ranked matches, etc.

Normally I would say they shouldn't make another Mario Kart, and instead take its multiplayer racing aspects and powerups and just make a 3D Super Mario Bros platforming racer.  But bar stool racing and lawn mower racing have inspired me.

Super Smash Bore is a total fan service and doesn't use the Wii mote.

Resident Evil...they better do a real Resident Evil, I don't care if it isn't part 5 (it's too much of a RE4 wanna be, and a lot of the excitement around it is directly linked to the graphics, something Wii won't have); in fact I want to see a return to the prerendered backgrounds, the scares, the 2D styled control, and nonlinear level design.  RE4 was fun but it wasn't Resident Evil.  I think a RE could work as a first person shooter, but I also don't have faith in anyone actually getting it right (they would make it too much a shooter before a Resident Evil).  What I wouldn't mind is a Rebirth style RE2 with the remote used for aiming or wielding a melee weapon in third person.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Red Steel Topic, new details added!

EGM pretty much trashes Red Steel and its sword controls in their new issue.  People are saying it is overhyped, looks like a GameCube game, and plays like an on rails shooter, a horror show pop out ride with floaty aiming...not the bridge between FPS mouse controls and the console game pad.

First person and sword control (using the nunchuck) means tunnel vision and targeting.  Sword fighting would work fine in third person like a Zelda game with a 3/4 perspective camera where the developer controls the camera and the space is taken out; the player can see in all directions and swing the remote freely without any camera issues.  The developers of Red Steel have chosen to face the challenge of first person sword fighting; the E3 build was more like a game built with the 360's pad in mind if you know what I mean.

I am currently confused about the game's controls, every source has a different story.
