my search of the smf database has found me some interesting karma mods.

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3474
if i understand this correctly it move the karma buttons to each individual post and then count what was given for each one

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1129
a full on replacement system.

This is a more subtle adjustment to the system and at the very least the besics of what everyone has wanted. a per post rating.

This one seems even better, but possibly overkill, as it allows you to not only vote per post but comment on those post outside of actually replying to the post. It also introduces a reputation system, which I'm not too sure about.

But honestly, I'm up for either one.
Karma as it is is just a pointless and stupid distraction.
with either of the 2 mods above, there is atleast a purpose to it.

They have to work with our version of the forums and database. I've already tried several karma system mods (those included), but they don't support Postgresql or they're for outdated versions of the forums.

so we are looking to support this Postgresql doohicky and based on your statement these forums are likely running on at least smf v2.0(as I assumed looking at the smf update logs)

it helps that you know the ins and outs of the forums on a technical side while we have to rely on guesswork, anything else we should look for ;)

psst.  Scroll down to the very, very bottom of any page on the forum.  Like this page, for instance.  :D

anyways this postgresql thing is obviously going to be the bigger problem....(apparently it isn't widely supported
is it possible to have somebody take the code for one of these mods and optimize it for our forums.

the big question is however who would have the skills to optimize a mod for our forums, the worst I have done is manually reinstall a computer with windows vista after a wipe(the thing is still slow as hell and I doubt 7 would help much)  and to revive a softbricked Android phone.(not much fun)

This one supports smf v2.0.4 and its creator seems like he would be perfectly willing to figure out the postgres optimization for us if it hasn't been done already.

Also i could set up an account there and ask him for you although i have no idea if he has postgres optimized already (it was updated pretty recently)

However the best solution would be to test the software on the forum now so that we can report anything that goes wrong.

Basically download, test, if it doesn't work I will go over and ask for the postgres optimization and anything else we need and then we go from there.

Pokepal made a point about the karma system and how it doesn't fix bad posting habits because you don't know why someone smited you, so I thought I'd point out that I smite TJ Spyke every time he starts a post with "Um" because it comes off as really obnoxious.

god help me if Pokepal convinces you to ditch karma when I couldn't

so wait any response

can you even test this stuff without having to bring the forums offline or otherwise impeding the average user.

Fine by me, a dislike button could wind up breeding even more negativity around here.

Eh it still seems like its still worth a full trial run, besides one of us can easily shoot him a request for alternate placements.

Why doesn't this site just move to Disqus like the rest of the internet seems to be doing? Is it expensive or difficult or something? It'd be nice to have the same account across multiple sites. I like Disqus for that. And it has that "like a particular post" feature that folks here seem to want.
Just a friendly suggestion.

I don't like Disqus. Haven't for years and you know why?

Because regardless of the machine I am on.  The browser I use.  The Security settings that I have.  THE STUPID THING DOES NOT LOAD.

I've never had a problem loading Disqus. I do prefer sites that use Facebook though since it lets you block people that annoy you (Disqus allows no option, so if somebody annoys you you have to just ignore them even if they bother you).

Disqus is bad since it doesn't actually build a community like a real forum does. It's great if you just want people to vomit their brains contents on to your site.

Our current system can handle that as well, as evidenced by threads such as Neal's Mario Kart review and the preview of the one true Harvest Moon game.

Oh yeah. So, how'd the trial run for Karma work out? Is it back into R&D for more tinkering or ready for full scale production?

Hey Alanis Morrisette, isn't it ironic, don'tcha think, that as soon as karma is eliminated, I find about a dozen awesome posts I want to applaud?
Or is that just unfortunate?

I applied to be a test subject in the clinical trial. I was promised to be compensated for my time but I have yet to see a dime and this rash I have developed is beginning to itch. Are you sure this trial is safe?
