Journey Across America 2016!

Or something. At the end of the 10th anniversary, they said "We'll see you for the 15th anniversary!", and nothing ever happened.

2

There was a great opportunity here for Nintendo to set up their own Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection servers, change the code of games like Star Successor so they point to the new servers, and distribute the new version via the Wii U eShop. Maybe that'd be too much work, but fans already make unofficial modifications to do the same thing, and Nintendo already seems to change these games so they support the Gamepad. I guess it could be a rights thing with Gamespy or something.

Or you know, thinking about it, why didn't they release a general update to the Wii Disc Channel via the Wii Shop Channel? It would check the game you're running, and if it's a game with Wi-Fi, it would on-the-fly patch in new server info. This is almost exactly what homebrew apps like Riivolution do. Huh. Still too much work for old games, I guess. But man, it totally seems possible!

In that Q&A, Natsume reconfirms that the process of creating games is largely handled by Nintendo, with 3rd party publishers providing game files as appropriate.

Do you mean "choosing" here?

To start a new game in Diamond/Pearl onwards, you first have to erase your old file. You do this by holding a set of buttons while on the title screen. In Diamond/Pearl, that combination is Up + Select + B.

Yeah, they caused a bit of confusion in the Gen 4/5 games with the "New Game" option that you can select. It's an artifact from the earlier games; that option was how you generally started a new game, though you could also use it if you felt like playing a the beginning over again, so long as you didn't save and overwrite your old file--then things got disastrous.

They finally changed this in Diamond/Pearl, where you could still start a New Game, but couldn't save at all. Even though this was a good thing for having that go at playing the game from the start, it really made no sense to have it there for people who actually did want to start a new file. They made it a bit clearer that you couldn't save right off the bat if you selected New Game in Black/White, but they still didn't tell you that button combo you actually needed. It was a bit stupid, and they finally removed "New Game" in X/Y.

"The unit’s side has a volume/brightness toggle. Not sure how the brightness setting is changed, but Wikipedia says it controls both."

Maybe try holding Start or Select? That's how it works on the DSi.

Choice Provisions' first title

Well, first title under that name. They were Gaijin Games before, and of course put out the Bit.Trip series and Runner2.

Don’t forget, the free demo for Smash Bros. 3DS is now available to everyone and has no usage limit attached to it

Unless things changed, this was only the case for the demo given to Club Nintendo members. That's what made it fairly exclusive. :P The normal demo should have a 30 play count limit.

Omega Red would be pretty cool.

Makes sense. It keeps asking for a WEP key which should just be the password on a two of the other spots I tried. With my home internet connection, it won't even allow me to select it as an option. If I unlock my home network, will that make much of a difference or will the WPA just cause the DS to reject it no matter what?

Yeah, the DS will connect to WEP networks and open (unlocked) networks.

Has there ever been a WiiWare game discounted? Can the Wii Shop Channel even do that?

The only time I remember something being discounted was December 2009, when the four Sonic Genesis games were docked from 800 points to 500 points.

How about Friend Vouchers in Metroid Prime 3 and Trilogy?
I still can't believe that they actually tied bonus content to those stupid things.

I think that stuff became unavailable last June when the Wii Message Board was shutdown. Not as huge of a deal since saves are sort of easy to import on Wii; GameFAQs has a nice save file that has no progress, but all the necessary credits.

The puzzle DLC for the Laytons, and I think the books in 100 Classic Books, are all on cartridge, so if you're willing to cheat later on down the road they're not lost forever. Still, good enough reason for me to pick them up.

Sucks to hear that Picross DS/3D won't be able to hold all their DLC on one cartridge. :( Not sure if it's worth $5 to pick up another Picross 3D just for that...

Pokemon Conquest: The episode distribution ended long ago, but you can use an odd password system to unlock them now.

Pokemon Rangers: Both Shadows of Almia and Guardian Signs still have two missions each up for download. Like Layton, though, these are all on-cartridge, so you could cheat them in later.

Dragon Quest IX: Yeah, MisterE13 is right, if you connect locally with someone who's already downloaded the quests, you'll get them, too. I wouldn't risk the chances of that happening, but it is possible.

Also: GTA: Chinatown Wars. It took me a while to confirm this, but there are two missions that only be accessed by connecting to the Rockstar Social Club and playing some minigames. The missions are only going to last you 15 minutes or so compared to dearth of puzzles in Layton, though, so I wouldn't get the game NOW if that's all you want it for.

Last bit, Pokemon. There's not really much in Pokemon that could be considered DLC (not counting Mystery Gifts, but those are all over, anyway), but there are medals (achievements) in Black 2/White 2 that are fairly exclusive to online play: Do a trade with someone internationally so you can visit Union Tower, and fill up your Pal Pad. Trading "internationally" SHOULD be fairly easy down the road if you have two copies of the game--just register your location in one copy as being in a different country, and that should work. The Pal Pad one is also possible to get after the shutdown, but since Friend Codes won't be handed out after that date, I implore you to find 31 other copies of BW/BW2 that have connected to the Internet at some point. Good luck.

Also in Pokemon: Female Pokemon with their Hidden Abilities. Most of everybody who knows what that means has moved on to X/Y at this point, but there is still some reason to collect all the HAFs/DWFs in Black/White (RNG abuse, mainly). After the shutdown, the only way to legally get these Pokemon will be through local trading with someone who got them from somewhere else. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then just ignore this part.

Ah, as suspected. Glad to hear the decision to shutdown WFC wasn't made solely by Nintendo. Pretty lucky for Nintendo that GameSpy doesn't shut down until the day before MK8. :P

Yup, I've been scrambling to get the DS Laytons and Picross 3D since the news hit. Other noteworthy games include Mario Vs. Donkey Kong (all three DS ones), Picross DS, and WarioWare D.I.Y. There's also Dragon Quest IX with its weekly quests, though you can (apparently) get those otherwise by locally connecting to a copy that already downloaded them.

One I'm not sure of is GTA: Chinatown Wars. Are there any special Wi-Fi-only missions to be worried about, or is it mostly costumes and stuff?

September 26 - Pokémon Z (3DS)

Nah, not less than a year after XY for a third version. It's always been at least two years in between, or a year and a half in BW2's case. RS remakes, maybe, we've from "No evidence, they're just the next in line to be remade and now they're actually a significant reason to do so (3D Pokemon)" to "Well looky here, we have a hidden Mega Lati@s in the code, what could that mean?". But new games this year would have to be announced very soon, like in the next month, to keep up with past announcements' patterns, and I don't think they'll do that when XY are *so* fresh in everyone's mind (the Torchic distribution from launch hasn't even ended yet). Maybe an announcement later in the year of a game to be released in 2015's spring, sure, XY will be 16 months old at that point, and new games will be welcomed by the fanbase.
