Great interview.

You brought up some things I hadn't heard before despite following the game heavily and asked some good questions.

Well this went to hell.

I really see no appeal.
If you have a ps3 it already streams everything and you can play its huge library as well as all the games it shares with Vita.

If you don't have a ps3 it costs 150 dollars (50 below a ps3) and way above a streaming device.

3
the misconceptions on the behalf of the gaming populace astounds me. I got into an argument with a guy saying that Metal Gear Solid 4 ran at native 1080p simply because it says that on the box... and even after I showed him that it was in fact, only 1024x768 (4:3 aspect ration, for pete's sake) with a little AA mixed in.

If people have no idea and can't actually tell the difference why should they care.
If you have to prove it to someone it means they don't notice the difference in their daily use.
That is why you are most likely going to keep seeing games go under 1080p on the upcoming consoles.

Who the **** doesn't have a DS3 who wants to buy this? Get over yourself.

So they made a new less functional console for people who already have their console?

I am honestly confused why you are angry.

Just found out you need to spend $150 to get one with a controller. The 100 buck version is for people who have PS3s already?

The $100 one also only has 1 GB of storage and the 150 as 8 GB. Get ready to buy some overpriced proprietary Sony accessories.

This seems worthless.
It is too expensive as a streaming box and it is terrible as a gaming box.

If i want to stream Chromecast is smaller and is 35 bucks.

If I want to play games this won't even let me play all the games available for the Vita. It doesn't have the library of the 360, ps3 or Wii to make it worth picking up.It apparently only allows 2 controllers to connect throwing out a cheap party game machine. It also still has all the negatives of the Vita, mainly that PS3 does everything it does and more.

It's cheap but not cheap enough to be choice for streaming and people who want to play games would rather pay a little more to get a good gaming machine. This seems like its hitting a spot nearly no one wants.

I am a big fan of using the touch screen controls and have found them way faster for the majority of things so far.
How fast "fast" we're talking about? You can do a sword with a stick in a fraction of a second.

Can i direct you to my guide for the game? It's for the full game but demo also has hammer and whip and only missing claws and bomb.

Way faster. Using the thumbstick limits me to the speed the game lines up the characters while using the touch pad gathers members with the same speed I draw. I can start and initiate the line just as fast and get greater control over the shape I'm making. The advantage increases in mission mode since the game doesn't slowdown for my guys to line up. I still use the thumb stick for really big swords and ladders and the like but I prefer the touchscreen. I haven't had an problem with multiair combos.

I may change my tune with the full game but unless the new guys change things drastically I doubt it.

I can't wait for this game. I've put hours into the demo and I am pretty much out of plays.

A big part of Nintendo's switch to focusing on controllers has come as a result of the less obvious benefits of improved hardware.

Nintendo has always focused on controllers. The only time they didn't was the GameCube and it was HUGE mistake.
NES - dpad and the base design for modern controllers. Light gun
SNES- shoulder buttons and the 4 button layout used by everyone today while their competition released a 3 button controller.
N64- Analog sticks and rumble packs
GC- a dual shock with better placement of the left stick, terrible right stick and an analog trigger (which the competition had)
Wii- Nuff said
WiiU- Nuff said

Controllers were always a big focus of Nintendo if not the focus.

Yeah, that's the DS and Nintendo had that concept for YEARS and never did anything worth a damn with it.

I don't even know wtf is going on here. First of all you must have not played anything on the DS because I can pull out dozens of examples off the top of my head.
Secondly you have obviously not played Nintendoland which lays out nintendos ideas which are mainly a asynchronous multiplayer and not DS related at all.

In order of interest

W 101
Pikmin 3
Dungeons and Dragons Mystara beat me up with online play!
Watchdogs if the game is more than a cover shooter
Mario 3D World if my wife enjoys the multiplayer, if not maybe
Same with Wii U Party but no if not maybe
Wind Waker because I won't be able to stop myself

Terrible title but I'll reply.

Something more than bad WiiU sales must be going on with these publishers and Nintendo.  Games coming out now are games that should've been green lit around 2 years ago at the minimum.  At that time, Nintendo was coming off the Wii which sold well and no one had any idea the WiiU would be struggling this bad at this point so what excuse did they have back then to not get something in development.

This is the important point.

Games coming out for the next couple of years will have been greenlit before the consoles launched. Any lack of support has nothing to do with actual sales. Prelaunch momentum on developing titles is why PS3 got a lot of games.

This is about the business model of the big companies. They rely on their size and ability to put out high end graphics to draw in players. Developers dying from expenses is actually a positive for EA/Activision because they can use their financial muscle to simply push out or absorb the competition. Nintendo's whole philosophy and weaker hardware goes against what these companies want and how they do business. It isn't a coincidence that the two best ways to show graphics (fps and cinematic) are the big games they push out.

Despite the doom and gloom however, the U is still getting the biggest new 3rd party ip of the year, Watchdogs.

PS4 looks good mainly because Xb1 looks like such ****.

The only game that really interested me was Final Fantasy 15 and I don't really know how I feel about it leaving turn based combat behind. I like jrpgs and there just aren't many left anymore. It has no release date anyway so I'm thinking Xmas 2014 if you're lucky.

That said I also won't be picking it up because I am not going to pay to play online

This game looks amazing. I didn't think much at the first reveal since I never played the first but this has me sold. Maybe I'll get the original once the old consoles become dirt cheap this fall.

Aaaaand they've now confirmed that they have zero games in development for the WiiU.

This isn't something that happens in a couple of months. EA as obviously had plans to ditch WiiU for some time. It seems like the Origin fallout has to be pretty much all true now.

Now that I think about it did EA have any games that were successful on the Wii? Because both Activision and Ubisoft did. All I can think of is Dead Space: Terrible Railshooter and Yearly Sports Sequel: Gimped Addition.

TalkBack / Re: Madden Skipping Wii U in 2013
« on: May 02, 2013, 09:51:46 PM »
Why would EA be contractually obligated to put it on Wii U? They have the license, they can put it on whatever they want. If EA decided that the only system that would get the game is the PSP, they could do that.

Also, the NFL has no say on what systems EA puts or doesn't put the game on.

That isn't how licenses, particularly exclusive licenses like this one, work. The contract will have all kinds of requirments about how broad the appeal and market of the game needs to be if only just for brand management purposes. They have been partners for so long and the unlikelihood of anyone even being able to make yearly sports games on super-expensive hardware gives EA a lot of power though.

Nintendo is new to HD game development so them being understaffed, at least initially, makes sense.  They're just now learning what everyone else did six years ago and I sure don't expect Nintendo to learn something by merely observing the rest of the industry.

It has nothing to do with HD, just the same crap that happens on every new console, particularly with Nintendo
games. Rumor is that Xbox software is already months behind schedule too because moving people to different hardware always takes more time than expected.

TalkBack / Re: Madden Skipping Wii U in 2013
« on: May 02, 2013, 05:44:28 PM »
This is bizarre. I haven't picked up a Madden game ever, but I thought that EA would be contractually obligated to put this on WiiU. Even with the slow sales it doesn't make sense to ditch a yearly title from the platform, particularly when game decisions are usually made years before hand and EA has proven they don't give a **** about the quality of a port. It seems to me like EA is trying to throw their weight around and funnel customers to the same place they are putting their COD knockoffs.

This isn't just EA passing on the Wii U, it's the NFL!  The NFL will want their game on damn near everything and I don't think it would be EA's decision alone to skip a console.  The NFL would be pissed if EA skipped a console because of personal feelings, it would have to be about money. EA has obviously convinced the NFL that Madden on the Wii U won't make money.

The NFL has nothing to do with this decision. They sell their license to EA exactly so they don't have to deal with this ****. EA has had the license so long it is probably pretty much a formality now which gives them a lot of leeway to push boundaries.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U - The Road to E3 - 6/11/13 51ish days

I can see Nintendo making one pre E3 direct talking about games that will be on playable on E3 showfloor and then at the end of the week yet another, teasing future projects.

This is the thing. Any E3 direct will gather all the attention a press conference would without the boring bits. Every gaming site will post everything whether it be a direct or whispered by a booth babe while the writer tries to talk his way into a handjob. The hands-on, impressions and shitty youtubes of demos will still be there. The little mainstream press that goes will also still get inside access at an event.

Would people still be saying E3 was pointless if we knew that Nintendo had a big announcement that was going to be made?  Or is it just because Nintendo has nothing new to show or announce that  means E3 is dead?

I would still say it was pointless because any and all big announcements could be made in the direct they make around e3. They just announced the freaking sequel to A Link to the Past in a Direct about a week ago and that would typically be huge jaw dropping news at E3. Instead of a live stage show that is 90% numbers, sales, technical screwups and investor talk we will get the portion we care about in a video immediately instead of waiting for it to drip through the audience and get to us eventually.

20
Instead of reading shitty impressions of a video someone watched,  then grainy second hand video and finally the direct feed from Nintendo we get to jump to the direct feed immediately.

Any big game announcement will be picked up by the usual press whether Nintendo does a conference about it, directly streams it to consumers, or just drops it on the ground and walks away.

Nintendo is also still there to do any of the mainstream press crap, which isn't a giant show aimed at people watching at home like E3 has become. There will also still be demos which is the only real benefit of having people physically there.

It makes sense, E3 is really pointless.
Its a big show where they show videos to the press who then post them online until they get the direct feed and put them online.
Nintendo can do it all in Directs without the middleman. The middlemen will cover their site with the directs anyway because they are stenographers and any Nintendo news is big news.
The only thing that they could do differently that would be good at a conference people go to is have them play the games and hopefully that is what they will do. That could change too if they ever decide to just put the demos online.

I'm trying to wrap my head around why people are excited for yet another Minecraft launch. It has been on PC for years, Xbl for quite some time as well as Android. Is it just people reveling in sales or do people actually want to buy it despite it being available in a dozen other forms?

Why would the WiiU get killed by these low prices but not the new PS/Xbox?
The big games for these systems are going to be cross generation like Watchdogs so they will be available on these cheap systems. This is a problem for every new console entering the market.

WiiU needs games people will buy the system for, not to entice the 150 dollar console purchasers.
I also really like Ian's comment about perception and Luigi Dude's NSMB analysis.  Just too many NSMB too close together.

Classic Ian.

Nintendo takes its fans for granted despite reviving dead franchises only they care about like PUNCH OUT and Kid fucking Icarus. They funded a new Sin and Punishment for god's sake.  If you are a longtime Nintendo fan they have done all kinds of things to cater YOU. Even though NSMB became an insane seller do you honestly think that was revived despite long time fans? They may have come out with a bunch the games recently its something long time fans should actually enjoy since 2D mario was dead for 2 generations.

The problem is this: It's either be blamed for not making something new or be blamed for making something too new.

Nintendo makes a game fans have been asking for- stop rehashing games we haven't seen in years, I want something new
Nintendo makes a new game- beg for games like Nintendo's current franchises, ignore new game because it uses motion controls/is a downloadable game so it doesn't get a marketing push(notice quality isn't even mentioned, just marketing)

Frankly, as a long time Nintendo fan I am sick of being told Nintendo's new games aren't for me. Because you don't like Wii Sports doesn't mean that most Nintendo fan's don't.
