Are they no longer going to track Wii U sales for the new year? How will we know when it reaches single digits?!

And it was never a pack in game.  Though to be fair it's been on five systems including PC I believe.

The Western version of Monster Hunter World has Japanese text, and the PC version is coming out in the fall for some reason, so the One X version of World is the highest fidelity right now.

Switch has already outsold the Wii U globally, with ease. 14.86 million consoles as of 12/31 (less than 10 months) vs 13.56 (over 5 years). Software sales at nearly 53 million.
https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/finance/hard_soft/index.html
Other tidbits - Mario Odyssey has sold over 9 million copies (has outsold SW Battlefront 2 on PS4, Xbone, and PC combined).
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 8 million copies.
Zelda sold 7 million copies
Splatoon 2 sold million copies

If they can keep the momentum going, Switch will outsell Xbox One within the next year and a half or so.

The best selling 3D Mario is currently Galaxy 1 at 12.76 million copies.  Mario Odyssey is easily going to surpass that number, probably by the end of 2018.  It'll be interesting to see just how high it can go in the end.  It's kind of funny when you think about it, for years Nintendo thought making 3D Mario more linear like the 2D games was the answer for greater accessibility.  I mean this was kind of true since Galaxy 1 ended up selling a million more then Mario 64, but Odyssey is going to end up blowing past all of them.

Hell, it's the same thing with Zelda as well.  After Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask they thought gaming was getting too complicated for people so made Zelda games for the next decade more linear with increased handholding.  Well now with Breath of the Wild they've done the complete opposite with it being completely non-linear with literally no handholding, and it's already the 2nd best selling Zelda with close to 8 million copies sold if you combine the Switch and Wii U version sales together.  By the end of 2018 it'll probably be over 10 million which will be the first time in history a Zelda game has broke that mark.  By the time it stops selling they'll be a huge gap between Breath of the Wild and any other Zelda before it.

So rather ironic that in order to achieve the results they wanted, they just had to do the opposite of what they thought.

I don't think it necessarily means people prefer the series to be the way they are now. I think just being as highly acclaimed as they are, feeling fresh, and being on in-demand hardware combined to get them to where they are. I think after a few years they could pull the same trick by going back to the way they were before if the games are of the same quality and Switch 2 or whatever is selling like hotcakes.

I think it's the practice a lot of companies do where they look at who's NOT buying their product and assume that they can modify their product to attract them and the existing customerbase will stick around.

Mario is a more accessible series than Zelda so all I can think there is that the huge sales of the NSMB games on the DS and Wii were due to the casual audience getting back into Mario as a nostalgia kick.  That works for more dedicated gamers, too.  NSMB was pretty cool when we hadn't had 2D Mario in over 10 years but seems overly simplistic to be a regular thing, particularly at the the cost of proper 3D Mario.  NSMB Wii came out among the Galaxy games.  No one knew then that 3D Mario was going to be dormant for a while and NSMB would become the norm.  Super Mario 3D Land/World to me is a middleground that doesn't please either group.  It's too complicated compared to 2D Mario and too simplistic compared to the full 3D games.  Though Odyssey could be doing something similar to NSMB where it uses a design that hasn't been seen for a while so it's getting the same "I haven't played a Mario like that in a while" appeal.

Zelda however is not really that accessible of a series.  Yeah compared to some other games it is but by it's very nature it's a complicated series involving puzzle-solving, exploration and non-linear gameplay.  I remember with both A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time getting people I knew to try it out and they quickly lost interest because the game was much more complicated than the linear action games or sports titles they usually play.  So trying to make Zelda accessible and linear is missing the point.  To get it to the point that those turned off by Zelda's complications would like it it would really not play like Zelda anymore and the less the series plays like Zelda the less interested actual Zelda fans will be.  There is a Zelda audience and it is fairly large and they will buy games that have a certain level of complicated and ambitious design.  They aren't interested in things being overly simple, linear or formulaic.

You can attempt to grow an audience but you can't take the old audience for granted as you do it.

Oh no, I disagree, Ian. You certainly can take the old audience for granted as you grow a new one. You're the shining example of that!

So following this trend Nintendo is going to make Paper Mario an RPG again and suddenly it's sales will be through the roof! ;)

Now, if they can take the good things and move them to a platform that more than one of my local friends owns, we might have something here.
