This is great.  It will be interesting to see if the techniques used to extend the NintendoZone to home networks can be made to work for this, in spite of what Nintendo says.  I can't imagine they shipped any kind of hardware to these thousands of locations.  Even if not this is a better use NintendoZone locations since the app, as seen in the above comments, can apparently be hard to figure out.

Apple Festival Report

This time of year there are several Apple Festivals 'round here and after visiting them here is my report:

Johnny Appleseed Festival (Fort Wayne, IN) - 7 street passes!  (my most at one time)  Including 3 NSMB2 coin rush exchanges.  Excellent!

Kendallville Apple Festival (Kendallville, IN) - 0 street passes.  boo.

So going to the "big city" makes a big difference.

Not really excited about buying Ninja Gaiden again (have it on Wii) but save state is a strong attraction.  It's probably the game I most love that I have never beaten.

It think I would buy a lot more VC if it was unified across Nintendo systems.

Hopefully no multitasking means "simultaneous" multitasking.  You'd want the Remote Control (and maybe the listings part of TVii) to work the way the Browser does on 3DS.  Pause game, go to that interface, return to game.

I can't say much of anything about the PS3,

Allow me - the PS3 is a mammoth media machine.  Of course, CD, DVD and BluRay support, as well as supporting a variety of video formats and MP3s from USB or directly on the internal hard drive.  It's a Netflix and Amazon player as well as Sony's movie store (before Amazon, it was mildly useful for new releases).  It streams music and video from my media server/DVR.  And it supports NFL Sunday Ticket, MLB, and NHL apps.

Jonny is right.  People talk about what Nintendo talks about.  And Nintendo has been talking about a media center and a mini-game collection.  (Even if it's great, it looks like a mini-game collection)

And I don't love when other press hates on Nintendo and can't figure out that it's Xbox that put the A button in the wrong spot way too long after the original NES showed the world where it properly goes.

But of course, those of us who love Nintendo... hate away!  We wouldn't be mad if we didn't love Nintendo.

I look forward to changing my mind about the Wii U and like Drew says, all it will take will be ... Games!

Yes yes yes! Online cooperative play with my family is awesome! Multiplayer needn't be about playing with strangers, it can be about connecting with friends and family separated geographically.

On PS3 there are so many: Borderlands 1&2, resident evil 5, portal 2, even second tier games like Transformers and downloadable games like Dead Nation all have full co-op campaigns.  And in games where it's missing people complain loudly and sometimes the feature is patched in later. (Scott pilgrim for example)

Nintendo is now charging full price for their games - it's time for them to include the full feature set.  There's no way a game like NSMB U (a top tier game with 4 player co-op multiplayer) comes out on any on any other platform without online play.

TalkBack / Re: Wii Virtual Console Titles Not Playable on GamePad

I don't know if "lazy" is the word I'd use.  .... it's not as simple as many claim. Paint a big A for Apologist on my lapel if ya like.

Fine - but so what.  The title of this thread is about the GamePad support, but frankly the concept that VC is now a legacy Wii Only feature supported only through some odd backwards compatibility mode is the worst part of this.  I expected the VC to continue and thrive in new ways on Wii U.  To be upgraded to match the 3DS (i.e. proper save states) and to start including even more games from systems.  Perhaps even add GameCube titles.   It's disappointing to see that Wii may have been it.

It also reopens the constant wounds that Nintendo does not treat your downloads the way every other modern company does.  You never worry about losing your digital downloads from Steam, or Apple, or the rest of these online markets.  (Hopefully that will all be fixed in Wii U, but they certainly haven't wanted to talk about it yet)

Really I thought Nintendo had figured this out.  I figured they'd be announcing GameCube joining the Virtual Console along with everything getting the enhancements seen in 3DS (proper save state support!).  Instead they can't confirm it's at available at launch.

I have an HD TV so this doesn't apply to me. But are composite cables also in the package? If not imagine the problems that will arise for SD TV users.

I think they're including RF Converters with a switch for choosing "Game" and "TV" :)

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo TVii Announced
« on: September 14, 2012, 08:13:04 AM »
I'm not sure I get it yet.  What is TVii really?  Just some listings for the local Cable TV you subscribe to intermixed with the Amazon and Netflix (etc) catalogs? (And TIVO, if you have that)  Is it going to integrate with your Cable TV DVR?  Through magic (i.e. complex setup) it's going to send the IR commands to switch your TV inputs, (and audio system inputs) to get to the content you've selected?  Will they really be able to support so many devices?

I think I like the Netflix, Amazon, etc services being mixed together to find all content, but I don't understand the TVii integration at all.

Is anyone here affected by the decision to not support other forms of Audio Out? I mean... I'm so not an audiophile, and practically the entire gaming industry was fooled by GH3's mono sound audio for MONTHS, but I've noticed some people out there complaining, wonder if anyone here share those concerns too?

Yes.  It wont' work well for my setup.  I can't do HDMI to my audio system, so I'm stuck with generic stereo (maybe PL II) and no Dolby Digital / DTS whatever the system will output.  Having an optical or coaxial digital audio would be preferred.  PS3 does optical out to my system currently and sounds great.  I'm not surprised by this since Nintendo has never done much to put ports on their devices (save the NES with it's composite out!) but it is another drawback.

Fine.  The only thing I don't think is priced wrong about today's announcement.  Though it would of been nice if something seemed like a good value!

At this price I won't be surprised if there is little support for this peripheral.  Think how many times games would have been improved with simple Classic Controller support and that never happened.

This is crazy!  VC games are in Wii emulation mode?  It's so shocking it's just got to be not true.  (Unless they are abandoning the service)

In regards to the pricing of games, it's more than just the price (where lower = more sales and higher = less sales).  I worked at a gamestop for a long time, and there is a customer perception where if a game releases at less than 60, it's not worth buying.  That's why you get mediocre games releasing at 60, and then quickly dropping later.  There is a stigma with games that release for 'less' than full price.  If you have assassin's creed 3 on all 3 systems, but the wii U one is 50, the customers will automatically assume it is an inferior product without knowing anything about it.  To compete with ps3 and 360 it needs to price match them, even if that means they need to raise the price of their games.  It's a total customer perception thing.

Do you think there's a chance keeping the lower price could help avoid the downward price expectation? If it's perceived to come out at a slight discount could there be less "wait for the sale" attitude?

First:  supposedly.

Second: Having skipped all the others (didn't have a DS, was sick of Wii by the time NSMBWii was released) NSMB2 may actually be the first NSMB game I own.  So I'm not fatigued - but I still wish they would refresh what the New in NSMB means - the art style and music has something about it that is less desirable then the 3D Mario's.

Third: Back to SML3D.  Probably a bad idea, but I've been replaying it for the elusive 5 shiny stars.

Great impressions. This upped my interest in the game.

But:

Quote
The music seems like Nintendo is trolling critics of the New Super Mario Bros. series’ music,

Why has Nintendo gone this terrible route with the music.  Does anyone like this music style?  Is Koji Kondo OK?  What's going on?

Yeah, but its not the current gen systems that the Wii U will be competing with.

This is my point.  I would like the hardware to "effortlessly" do 1080p.

The hardware keeps looking worse the more we hear.  Today they add limited battery life to the list.   Is there any good thing we've learned about the hardware?

I feel too negative about this and I'm sorry about that.  I just want nintendo to cater to whims. :)

I was sad to see a video preview that showed motion controls being used with the gamepad... I was hoping that was only part of wiimote.  It's my least favorite part of NSMBWii

Ouch.  I really am surprised they can't* get 1080p out of this hardware.  This seems like a bad sign to me.  Pikmin especially would look great in full HD.

*won't?

it's a good [game] don't get me wrong,

Thanks for the review.  ;)   It's only one of the most important and best games of all time.  Glad it qualifies as Good.  (just giving you a hard time)

Anyway, I'm not sure what the advantage of making it 2 or 3 dollars would be - I think the arguments about it being old, often released, etc would apply at any price.  I happily bought in at 5 - though I had passed it up on the Wii Virtual Console. I wonder if I'd feel different if I was buying it digitally again.

It's a great game!  I recommend anyone getting it even without the patch.  I played through the entire game and got all the treasures without experiencing any bugs.  Lots of fun!
