Would we be picking straight up or against the spread?

I'd be interested in a league or pick the winner type of situation.

Straight-up, I think, since we won't be placing any monetary bets.

In any case, it seems like folks are interested, so tomorrow I'll put up the first week's chart, so we'll have a week to ponder our choices before Thursday's opening game. Ahhhh, football season... ;D

Why don't we just use CBS or ESPN? They do free pick'em leagues there...

I didn't know that. Sounds like a plan! Do we all have to create accounts there, or...?

Yes, but it's free.

I'll set one up on CBS Sports and you guys can all PM me your e-mail address if you're interested. Sound good?

I can't promise what the prize will be, but the winner (and possibly second and third place) will get something good, such as a game, a poster, or something. I might part with my signed Tatsunoko vs. Capcom poster or the signed Scribblenauts poster for this.

If I wanted to be a super douche, I could also give away a signed copy of Madden 11 with the NWR quote on the back. :)

I pick it based on which team has more players with the letter "P" in their name, doesn't work out too well.

I'm all signed up and ready to go. I guess you can't make your selections yet, or at least you couldn't as of Wednesday.

Just a heads-up, I'm going to be posting my picks on this forum too, for easier visibility/added discussion. I encourage the rest of you to do likewise (we might snag some extra people as the season goes on, too). And I'm REALLY looking forward to Thursday's game: go Pack! Of course, the week ends on a low note with Oakland/Denver, but you can't win them all...

Anyway, I'm curious to hear if folks here have some power rankings in mind. I haven't had time to rank each team individually, but in general I'm thinking the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. GB/NE/PIT/NO/BAL are my top five, probably in that order,  although the Ravens are wobblers. Philly remains my favorite dark horse for the umpteenth straight year.

I'm actually down on Indy this year, for once, but the Lions are starting to scare me; will any other NFC North team keep its starting QB for the rest of the season? SD, ATL and the Jets should all once again be great this year, although I don't think they're top tier. Although the Falcons broke the bank over the offseason, so it's now or never for them...

The two Bay Area teams once again look like bottom feeders, with both of them seeming to enter the Suck for Luck campaign with a vengeance. Man I hope they get blacked out at each home game. Poor Minnesota may be the worst in the league, though, with Seattle being close due to their crappy QBs. I'm actually curious to see if the other NFC West teams have actually improved over the offseason, though, or if we're going to have another 7-9 playoff team this year. Mmmm, Western mediocrity...

Picks are live now. I guess they were waiting for the interminably long preseason to end.

My picks for week 1:
Green Bay, Atlanta, Cleveland, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Houston, Arizona, San Diego, Seattle, Jersey/A (Giants), Jersey/B (Jets), New England, Oakland and 48 for the tiebreaker.

Also, I'm sensing a theme on the league homepage. Not that I can complain... I mean, we gave 'em the friggin' game last year.

Quick question. Can you change you picks after you submit them?

I'm going with Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Cleveland, Houston (hey, why not? They always start hot...), Jacksonville, Kansas City, Philladelphia (this would have been a more fun shootout if Nnamdi hadn't joined the Eagles, but now Bradford's options are going to be limited), Detroit, Arizona, San Diego, San Francisco (hah!), NYG,  NYJ, and New England.

Monday's tie-breaker should go to Denver, final score 21-10.

More importantly, Randall Cobb's barrel roll?

I wish they would have let me pick last week.  I totally forgot there was a game last night.

Now THAT was a hell of a game! And yeah, Cobb clearly went to the Peppy School of Kick Returns.

Judging from the picks posted so far, it seems like the week's champion is mostly going to come down to the SF/SEA game, and/or the score for Monday...

In any case, I'm still delighted with last night's game. Wish they could all be as entertaining!

My wife is a Pittsburgh fan...I am not. I laughed a little bit yesterday as they got completely dominated by the Ravens. The thing about this season is basically you can't judge any of the teams by their previous season, except maybe someone like the Patriots.

Congrats to Neal for taking the week. Personally, I'm surprised that I squeaked into the double-digits...too bad that won't even get me the bronze. :( I was stunned by how crappy the Chiefs truly are (I thought they'd be worse than last year, but not that bad!), and the Falcons and Browns dropping their games were an unpleasant surprise. Insanolord, I'm calling you out: explain your team's performance! :P
