The only surprise here might be the release date.

If your Joy-Con charging grip is about to give up the ghost after seven years, Nintendo will have you covered in a few months.

A new version of the optional Switch accessory will be available on October 17 (the same day as Super Mario Party Jamboree). The new grip will maintain the USB support of the original, but can also adopt different positions (vertical or flat) and eliminates the side pieces present on the original model.

The removal of the side pieces allows the grip to also charge the NES controllers available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. The announcement coincides with today's release of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, as well as a sale on the controllers from Nintendo's online store.

Ooooh, seeing it able to lie flat while charging is a nice clean look.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

Most definitely, the design is fantastic.

I’ve seen some people say this is being released so late in the Switch's life not just because of the Switch Online controllers but also to offer a charging device for the Switch successor. It seems like the new system might still support the Joy-Cons but probably can't charge them natively. What's your thoughts on that?

I hear a lot of switch 2 speculation from this but I'm surprised nobody is considering a nvidia Shield-esque screen-less battery-less budget system refresh like the Wii mini for the switch.

Oooh, that's a wild idea! How low do you think that'd let Nintendo get the price? The Switch is holding its price REALLY well but do you think a screen-less TV only Switch Mini could take it to the $99 price point eventually?
