I didn't like Idiocracy. I understood the message after ten minutes. After that, it was just beating you over the head with it. Can't carry that joke for an hour and a half.

Idiocracy, like many comedies, is good until they get to the part where they need to start wrapping up the movie and things start to take a turn towards more serious. In Idiocracy's case that was somewhere around when he got made Secretary of whatever it was he was made secretary of. Everything before that was great, everything after that was just...

I just saw Adventureland. Hated it. Went in expecting a comedy, turned out it was a weepy drama. At least the music was good.

Tricked me too, but i still enjoyed it. It was a believable story at least. Soundtrack did rock, and the main character in this film is doing a movie called Zombie Land that looks pretty funny.

Idiocracy: sad-but-true/10

Idiocracy is a rare and astounding film - if nothing else, simply because they used actual filmed video from the future to make this movie.

Only recently seen this movie (couple months ago) and I have to agree with this rating.

Hitman. It was very silly and blatantly skipped bits in plot to make it coherent. I loved the chemistry between the male/female leads (i cant be bothered to type their names!).

Just got back from District 9. Wow I was super impressed, definitely one of my favorite movies. What i found most amazing is how stunning the special effects were, better then many super big budget movies, it shows how much waste is put into so many films when District 9 can pull off some of the best visuals I've seen.

I really don't have any complaints about the movie. It was well paced, never dragged its feet, and it was realistically acted. Not to mention it was emotionally engaging and smart.

I'm the only person I know who didn't love District 9.  I'm not generally a nitpicker, but I ended up nitpicking that one to death.

Saw Semi Pro last night.  It was what it was, a really bad Will Ferrel comedy.  Too bad, lots of talent in the cast, but the writing was really lazy.  5/10.

Marty = 7.5/10

Maybe you've heard of it, maybe you haven't. Best picture of 1955 or 1956, not going to bother too much on that detail. A pretty decent film about two lesser-attractive-people falling in love. However, it seems too unfinished. It also depicts life in an Italian family and there are a bunch of other subplots going on but in the end, the movie leaves you wondering what was going to happen with everyone. So, the movie ends up feeling like all set-up and no payoff. Except for with Marty and his finding a woman. That plot is settled but the rest of the secondary characters are left in the wind. I was surprised that the movie just ended. This movie is really just about a first date in a way but it's an awfully sweet first date and I was happy along with the main characters. There is also one hilarious side character that I thought was awesome because of his voice. If you ever see the movie, it's the guy who talks about a writer Mickey Spillane. Recommended if you want an idealized view of 1955 romance and life.

Shadow of a Doubt  8.5/10

One of the last big Alfred Hitchcock movies I haven't seen yet. It's a shame that the audience is left with no doubt right away as to whether the Uncle is guilty or not. I think it would have been better to keep toying with the audience's suspicion or doubt longer. That said, Joesph Cotton is awesome. It's worth watching the movie for his performance. Plus, once things are finally laid bare between the two main characters, it sets up an interesting finale and then we get to some real suspense. I'm surprised Hitchcock calls it his favorite film. There are others I like far more although I do admit that the ending to this would rank pretty high when it comes to Hitchcock movies. The ending is pretty darn good. And once again, there is another side character who I think is awesome. The character's name is Herb and the actor who plays him reminds me a lot of Rick Moranis. Seriously, you'd think Rick Moranis went back in time. He and the father of the family spend most of the movie talking about the ways they would kill one another. It's a concept that's a little out there but it keeps you entertained.

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World - 9/10

Sure, The Simpson summerized and lampooned this movie in about 5 minutes compared to the 161 minutes this movie runs at but I still recommend seeing the whole thing. It's the greatest comedy epic of all time. I say that because I don't think any other comedy runs this long and has an intermission break making it the only comedy epic. If you've ever seen Rat Race, that's close enough to the same plot here. A bunch of people learn about a buried treasure and the race is on as they rush to beat each other to the prize. The thing that sets this movie apart is that they tried to bring in as many famous comedians as they could at that time. Buster Keaton and the 3 Stooges make appearances. Some cameos I have no clue who the people were which now make the scenes they are in totally random.

The funny thing about this movie is that you probably aren't going to laugh out loud a lot. It might seem strange to recommend a comedy so highly then but it comes from the spirit of things. You just sort of grin along at the mayhem unfolding. There are a couple characters who you do make you laugh everytime they come on the screen. One is Sylvester Marcus who plays a thickheaded momma's boy and the other is Otto Meyer, a real weasel. If you see the movie, chances are you'll recognize Otto Meyer from The Simpsons episode: "Homer the Vigilante" when there is a cat burgler in town. At the end of the episode there is a mad dash through town for his hidden loot. That's the lampoon of this movie. One scene has a man in a fedora shaking his fist at Bart as his car goes down a river. That's Otto Meyer. Appearantly, even The Simpson writers thought he was hilarious enough to include one of his scenes in that episode.

The other thing that surprises me about this move is the stuntwork in it. I was amazed at the amount of stuntwork done in this movie as I watched it again. They did some spectacular camera work and driving stunts for this movie. The best thing is that since this is 1963, you know that most of that was actually done in real life. I think it would be worth watching just for those scenes alone. Great stuff, great movie.

Like everyone said, the movie was really good, very well done.  I just didn't get completely blown away.  However, I was very impressed.  It was exactly like my friend described it to me: "Like, Emperor's New Groove, but with more violence."

I loved Rat Race when it came out. When reading reviews for Rat Race, I learned that it was inspired from this movie which caused me to check it out the first time. Glad I did. I should watch Rat Race again to see how it holds up. It's been quite a few years now since I last saw it.

Somebody here a long time ago (maybe 2-3 weeks) mentioned The Boondock Saints. I was hanging out with some guys last night not going to some big party on campus and we watched it. The parts that I was actually paying attention to and we weren't talking over were pretty cool. I'd give it at least an 8 or an 8.5 out of 10. The problem is I didn't catch a lot of it, but I caught enough of it that I don't feel like watching it again, at least not any time soon.

Riff Trax Mystery Science Theater: Plan 9 from Outer Space

The riff was broadcast live into theaters from Nashville, TN and was tape delayed on the west coast, which was probably better since the weather didn't interfere for us. After a brief introduction the 50s "instructional" video called Flying Stewardess started, and they tore right into the opening credits like the old days--no holds barred.

After the short, there was an intermission with an ipod giveaway, some commercial spoofs, and a guy that sang 2 sci-fi themed songs on guitar, one about zombies and another about the future. While I wanted to get on with the movie, I was amused. The gang also had a song about the other 8 Plans, which was also ok.

Plan 9 is classic B-movie sci-fi infamy... it's the movie Seinfeld wanted to see while waiting around at the Chinese Restaurant. While I don't agree that it's "the worst movie ever made" (I've seen far worse on MST), it is full of sheer incompetence that, oddly enough, doesn't start off too terribly: a ufo lands in a cemetery and starts doing bad stuff. Little by little though, the stupid adds up: the scenes repeatedly jump from day to night, the characters point their guns around at stuff like they were toy gun props, the...antagonists wander around on screen for no apparent reason, and the last 15 minutes is a clusterfark of people rambling on about the danger over in the distance and arguing with alien-people.

A joke about the car 'face', a fake soliloquy (TIME FOR GO TO BEDDDD), [Servo] going overboard with details, and [Crow] pretending to read the credits toooo slowwwly was all very reminiscent of the show. Actually, they did hold back the absurdly obscure references which is alright by me; more stuff to laugh at. And laugh I did, more than any other time at the movie theater bar none. Well worth the extra $3 or so.

10/10

Taking Woodstock: 7.5/10

(explanation to come, I have to take a lunch break)

So i forgot to update this after i took lunch yesterday...

This film while very enjoyable, suffered from its shitty marketing that made it look more like a movie about woodstock, as opposed to a movie that happens to take place during woodstock. Its the same shitty marketing that has one of our forum members upset at Adventureland being billed as a comedy (and its okay, it happened to me too but i still enjoyed that film.)

The film was more about Elliot, played by Dimitri Martin (who was excellent by the way) and his trouble with his family basically holding him back. Their efforts in housing thousands of people that are attending the festival is what moves the plot and both brings the family together and drives them apart. So for those of you thinking you'd see a movie about hippies dropping acid, dancing naked, smoking weed, groovin to tunes and sliding in mud.. well this movie has that, but in small doses (save for the nudity, so if you're not up for a lot of male and female full frontal, this movie isn't for you). Aslo, for the fact that the majority of this movie takes place during woodstock.. the lack of tunes was a little dissapointing. Every now and again you might of heard someone like Joplin playing faintly in the background, but that was it..

Aside from the nitpicking though, it was still a fun movie to watch and one I might even watch again. Maybe not a dvd purchase, but a rental or such.

I tried something similar a few years ago.  Unfortunately, I was a little too ambitious and went with the top 1,000 films.  I got a couple hundred into it but a lot of the movies were very old and either hard to find at the video store (this was before Netflix) or I had simply never heard of.  I really should try again some day.

You know, I keep meaning to see that movie but I always end up choosing something else.

Eh, I didn't like it that much.  The story was trite and doesn't hold up well by today's standards.  That, and I don't really care for Clark Gable and the woman in the movie was just plain annoying.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!
