Title: The 'Help Termin8' thread
Post by: Termin8Anakin on October 13, 2003, 04:40:04 AM
I seem to get myself into trouble sometimes, so when I do, this is where's I'll go for some help.

This is my current problem, and the rest of the Aussie fellas know about it already - it's pissing the piss outta me.

I have no idea what is happening with my browser, but I am trying to go to Google and Alta Vista, but they don't show up.
For some reason, Google Image Search works when i type in 'images.google.com', but when i try to do a web search, the page doesn't even load.
Likewise, the Australian Alta Vista works, but the US one doesn't (not that it matters, but I would like the page to load when i go to it).

The page doesn't load, so the URL turns into this, for example:
http:///?%20www.google.com

Right now, I'm using IE6, in case it's a problem with the browser.

Does anybody know or have anything that can fix it?
And please, don't suggest switching to Firebird or any other browser. IE is fine.
Just some real help please.
You've been helpful with me past......

Thanks.

I don't provide technical support on IE for 2 reasons:

1)  I don't care to start up the browser, so I don't see these problems myself.
2)  The browser has so many unpatched bugs and security holes that I figure that anyone using it deserves their problems.

I'm assuming you've done all the usual things, delete history, cache and cookies?

I do use Firebird myself, but it often takes a little too long to start up.

Eh?  That's unusual Plugabugz...  For me, Firebird starts up in less than half the time it takes to start up IE.  (Unless of course you count the very FIRST time you boot Firebird, then it takes considerably longer)

Spybot: Search & Destroy
If you use IE you need a tool to keep all those nasty ads out. Spybot is completely free, has online update, finds trojans and traces, can block adservers, shreds files, etc.
By the way, no, IE ISN'T fine. Visit the wrong page... Bang! Virus installed, harddrive formatted, personal info stolen!

omg, sorry i even asked.

OK, I just downloaded Firebird, and tried running it, but nothing happens.
Is there meant to be some sort of install program? Cause I didn't see one.

Another thing, I also got that SpyBot thing that KDR suggested, and it's ok, but now, I go to google and alta vista, and instead of having the URL like how i said it was above, it now links me to the site called 'cPanel', which says that 'There is no site configured at this address'. cPanel seems to be like a web hosting company.

So i have no idea now whether it's IE or something else.

hahahaha, i know.
But there's nothing I can do about it until I get a new one next year.
This one's three years old too. And we got the el cheapo deal.

An installer isn't present in the official builds, but there are some unofficial ones that have one.  It's supposed to be a feature in 0.8 though, which is a ways down the road.

Sorry it didn't work for you, but I am still glad that you at least tried.  Perhaps Opera would work better for you.

hahah fair enough. I'll try it when i get home, cause I have to go to uni now.
If any of the search engines STILL don't pop up after I have tried Opera OR Mozilla, then you can't blame IE can ya

Have you updated your spybot and run all the tests?

Hey Shifty, i have tried the aussie Google. Same problem.
But for some reason, the aussie Alta Vista works, but not the US one.
Google Image Search works for both US and Aussie, but not the web search.

I know i can use other search engines, but thats not the point. I just want them to bloody work when i go to them.

maybe it's your provider blocking you, or maybe you have something set up to keep you from visiting certain sites.  Or something got on your computer that blocked them for you instead.

you know Nitsu, you weren't far off.

But Mario just came in a sweeped the problem under the rug!
Everything works fine and dandy now!
Thanks a bunch Mario!

And much to the disappointment I know I will get from Grey ninja, sorry bud but I won't have to use another browser anymore!
Go IE!

*runs*

Hey, I just noticed when I was running SpyBot (version 1.2).
The seach just stops when it reaches the C2.lop thing (number 2957).
I checked around, and they said that the only way to keep checking for bugs is to check C2.lop in the exclusions section.
I checked around some more, and they said the only way to remove C2.lop is to do it manually, going thru all these files and registry key things, which is a hassle to do.
Anyone had this problem and know a way to fix it without having to wait for an update to SpyBot?

Hey Grey Ninja, I didn't notice your post from way back at the beginning: Firebird does take way longer for me to start up (good few seconds compared to IE's, but that necessarily doesn't stop me from using it

Termin8: That's weird, it doesn't happen for me. I have all updates installed and use all includes. C2.lop is 6k-something for me.

May I ask what your specs are?  I have been thinking it might be a memory problem (ie. memory bandwidth).  I run Firebird at work, because I refuse to make a website without a decent browser to test it in, and it does take me a good 10 seconds to load it.  Reason being is that I have it saved on a network drive, and it takes a while to stream the files onto my computer.

But the problem is that IE cheats, by loading up essential files when you boot your computer, so it's always half loaded.  So when you start it up, it just loads a few files to memory, and you are good to go, while Firebird must load up a lot more.  On my computer, Firebird is at least twice as fast as IE, but I have a fair amount of memory bandwidth, and I have a decent processor.

From what I gather though, most people find that Firebird is much faster, especially the P4/Athlon optimized builds.

Hey guys, i have a serious problem with my computer. i did a virus scan last night using something i got off the net, and it says that i have heaps and heaps of infected files, ranging from Internet Explorer files to files in Program Files and WINDOWS folder. It also said that i have more than one trojan. AS you can guess, this is pretty bad, and I need an antivirus program off the net, a free one. not one from kazaa or anything. an official site where i can get a program to destroy these buggers. Any help is VERY much appreciated. Mario is posting this for me - the problem's so big i can't even get into PGC forums.

i use avg and i enjoy it.  doesn't slow down the ol' computer too much, and it works very well.  it's saved my ass a couple times.  it's free, so there's no harm in trying it out.  head on over to www.grisoft.com and try it out.

coool. thanks

another thing.

I am now missing two dll files. There are tons of sites where you can download dll files if you're missing some, but none of em seem to know what these two are:
- cerkqzb.dll
- dbfafri.dll

I've looked everywhere. If anyone knows where to find them, or has them on their pc, then send em my way. I've taken them off the startup thing from msconfig, and that's helped, but I think that these are linked to the problems I've been having with IE (hence I can't log in the forums, so this is a rare opportunity for me to post ). I looked up their name on my pc (without the file extension), and they are URL file protocols - whatever that is.
And Grey Ninja, I've downloaded the mozilla install file, so that if this just can't be fixed, i'll either format my pc or install mozilla.
You ain't got me on it just yet .

That's exactly what i keep telling him, nitsujdark.

Get a new computer or install Mozilla. You could at least install Mozilla, you can still use IE after you've installed Mozilla you know. Just give it a try.

Termin8, in the newest nightly builds of Firebird, there's an installer present.  I have not tried either the newest nightly or the installer yet, but it SHOULD work fine.

If you are curious, I am using Aebrahim's SSE2 optimized November 5th build, and am VERY pleased with it.  I have just been too lazy (and busy) to update it the last couple of weeks.

I looked up those DLL files you are missing though, and I have not found them either on my computer or even mention of them on the internet.  That's just strange...

At any rate, just install a different browser.  It's not like you can't have 2 at the same time.  I still use IE on the rare occasion, and there's nothing keeping me from it.  It's just that I prefer not to.

If you are going with a new computer, go with alienware.
