TalkBack / RE:Design a Logo for The Movies
« on: September 25, 2004, 08:10:39 PM »
I thought it was just art for a studio's logo, no names or text for the studio.  It says, "Fans are encouraged to create an original piece of art that doesn’t contain names or text and does not refer to products or trademarks."

In addition to The Movies and NFSUG2 fan art creation input into their games, I forgot that MGS3: SE also had a contest earlier this summer where they had fans create camaflouge clothing and the winners will have it implemented into the game.  (Don't worry there were strict requirements for the type of camaflouge needed lol, you won't see something ridiculously out of place lol).

That would defeat the purpose of the PSP, and the attempt at getting portable market share.

XB2 isn't supposed to lose money the way XB did, they can't afford that again.  As for Sony being the sole owner of technology, I don't think it will hurt them much.  And since there are so many companies involved with Blue Ray and already Blue Ray products available from a dozen companies I doubt there will be a similar situation for PS3 as their is for PSP.

I'm doubtful right now about the launches for the PS3 and the Revolution.  I don't see how the Revolution is going to be released within months of XB2.  Since development kits are not out yet (may have to do with it being so revolutionary and not wanting competitors to "steal" their ideas).  As for the PS3 I think it will be released mid 2006 at the earliest, and for game development they may be okay if they get development kits out soon.  The XB2 is supposedly gonna hit Xmas 2005, and they've had development kits out for awhile so they should have a good launch and continuous releases months after.

So if Xbox 2 launches Xmas 2005, I'd expect Revolution by March at the latest (if they stay by their word that they will release within months of the competition).  And I tend to think Nintendo means that for the earliest of the competitors to launch since they've seen now that launching a year later of 1 system has hurt them badly.  Xbox 2 has nothing to worry about launching early as far as hardware performance, it will equal or surpass PS3 if PS3 launches almost a year later.  Sony doesn't have to worry about third party support because developers develop games for launch and a year within launch for the company that was most successful last generation.  And their hardware sounds like it's going to be as good as XB2.  What I'm wondering about is how good the Revolution hardware will be, if it will have online support at launch, and what it's revolutionary feature is.  If it's hardware isn't atleast as good as one of the competitors it will have a tough time stealing market share, if it doesn't have online support at launch it will lose 3rd party support, and if the revolutionary feature isn't that revolutionary it will lose consumer respect.

General Gaming / RE:Gran Tourismo 4 not online
« on: September 25, 2004, 07:37:08 PM »
Personally, I was very upset when I heard about no online but I can't blame their business decisions.  GT 4 is a major game for them this Xmas, and with everything from MS and Nintendo, they need to do all they can.  Apparently the NA work for the online mode was done, but the Europe and Asian work was not...  Guess rather than give the majority of their online userbase something the rest of the world would not get, would be a worse move.  But anyways, GT4 is going to be phenomenal regardless of online play or not.  Over 50 courses (not including mirrored), now boasting 650 cars, all the new modes of play (especially Drag Racing for the first time!), photo mode, flee market mode, banker mode, etc etc etc.  It really will deliver the goods.

The only thing is that if GT4 is released next year online for the same price, I will be mad, everyone will.  I doubt they will do that.  I would not be surprised though, if the GT 4 online next year is the PSP game.  It would be a sly marketing move, and would guarantee big PSP sales.  Maybe they will release the PS2 GT 4 online the same day, and make the titles coplayable online.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:DS vs PSP....devs and journalists debate
« on: September 25, 2004, 07:24:41 PM »
I'm going to wait on the DS, I won't even be able to buy a portion of the games I want for consoles I own, this year.  And next year is loaded too.  After seeing TGS and the report about the games not shown at TGS for the PSP too, I'm sold on the PSP, even if the battery life sucks, it has game's I'd play at home.  It's got the 2d fighters, franchises I love (HSG, GT, ATV OF, MG), and it looks like it's going to be the home of many awesome 2d rpg's, as long as they come out here.  And on top of that I don't have an mp3 player and don't feel like paying big bucks for one that only does just that, so now that mp3 compatability is confirmed, that's the icing on the cake for me.  I'm also into online games and PSP already has online games being made for it, I dunno if the DS ever will.  I will buy the DS eventually though.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:OFFICIAL Online mouse_clicker vs the world thread
« on: September 25, 2004, 06:53:04 PM »
Online games are huge in parts of Asia, especially Korea.  But I believe that the online gamers there are predominately for PC's.  As game consoles online gaming develops even more the next generation, I bet it will garner a portion of those PC online Asian gamers.

As for MS not including modem use for their online games being a bad move is questionable.  For one, alot of their online titles would have to be scaled down to be playable for 56k.  Another thing to note that is online games this generation are more of a preparation for next generation as far as garnering online gamers.  By having only broadband, MS is ensuring it gets alot of the BB users now, and then next generation when 56k online games are much less than the already small amount they're now, they will have those gamers already on board.  And finally, MS has over 1 million online gamers, while Sony has 1.4 million (going by each companies most recent #'s).  Given the userbase of each system, it seems that MS BB only online was a good move rather than having 56k.

is that true?  Is there anyway I can get an excerpt of the show in text online, or dl the episode or something.  Theres no G4 here.  Why did he say he hated it?  I'm surprised given that DKC was a great platformer and had some sweet monkey loving music, even without the graphics it was a great game and DKC 2 as well, never played DKC3 myself.

I forgot another significant thing I should've said in my last post, MS has an advantage of only having to support 1 system next generation.  While Sony and Nintendo are going all out and trying to hold the portable market with new systems and loads of new games for them, there is MS already well into development with new games for XB2 from many developers.  The next gen is going to be very exciting.  Sony has just as much work to do as Nintendo to keep at #1 than Nintendo does to achieve #1.  So many things could happen, we could have all 3 home consoles neck to neck with PS2 users moving to XB2, or XB2 could become the market leader early with a head start on release.  Sony could grab the portable market and lose it's console stranglehold, or DS and PSP could be neck and neck.  The possibilities are just so exciting.  Whatever the case the next console race could be the closest one ever.

So it is a top loader.  That is good news because like 95% of the disc read errors with the PS2 are from a stupid gear malfunctioning, a gear that is part of the whole tray deal.  The inconvenience of not being able to stack on it isn't as bad as the benefit of no more disc read errors.  Unlike the PStwo design, I dig the new design, especially that it's not much different from the original design.  With that said, I will buy the new model eventually, perhaps used or when it's almost out of production (long time). hehehe, I ain't paying more than $50.

The money Sony is throwing at them?  Sony isn't throwing money left and right to companies to develop for PSP.  Unless you meant that the throwing money is the idea that if companies release games for it they will make good $.  Or is Sony paying the companies to give them development kits?  Seesh

And Xbox game lineup being 75% PC ports?  More like the XB gets great 3rd party support, exclusives, many PS2 ports, and a decent amount of PC ports.  I speak objectively, I won't be buying an XB unless it goes to $50 before next gen.

Didn't the Atari 2600 come before the 5200?  I own a 5200 and a 7800, but not a 2600, and I'm almost 100% positive 2600 came before.  It would make sense too 2600x2=5200, 2600x3=7800.  I thought the 2600 was their most successful console too.  And the SNES may be considered Nintendo's prime as far as the quality of the games, but the NES was their prime in terms of hardware and software sales.

I haven't heard that analysts predict PS3 will be less popular than PS2, but even if that was the case the PS3 could sell half as many systems as PS2 and still easily come out #1 vs the other consoles.

Another thing that should be brought up is really the key factor that's been ignored in this discussion.  Sure Atari, Nintendo, and Sega had declining sales significantly with their 3rd console they each released, BUT all three companies made horrible mistakes with their 3rd consoles.  Atari release the 7800 after the NES launched, with software that couldn't compete, among other mistakes they made.  Nintendo missed the mark with using cartridges and alienating 3rd parties with the N64.  And Sega alienated fans with the Sega CD and it's crap games, followed right after it came out by the 32x which did the same exact thing, followed right after by the Saturn which was rushed to market and had insufficient hardware to compete with N64 and PS1.  They all made huge mistakes, to have a huge hit in their console sales.  So going by historical precedence Sony would have to do the same...

A little off topic here: I think that MS has a great chance of having the best launch next gen (I don't know how much it will help them in the long run).  They already have development kits in the hands of key developers (more games at launch, and longer development time for those games too= better results).  Also MS (according to industry insiders) is changing it's attitude about how to do business with XB2, they're going to not market it's technical prowess and instead market the games.  Another possible ace up their sleeve according to GI, is that Perfect Dark Zero will be a launch title and Halo 3 will be releasing the same day PS3 launches.  Anyways, I mention the last paragraph as perhaps for the first time a company will take over as the market leader without their competitors making big mistakes that made that possible.  Only time will tell.

I am in the same position, mp multi demo for me is useless as is pictochat because I will never be near anyone I know (even if they buy a DS).  Although I think including mp demo is a good idea overall.  Picto chat is multiplayer only, and people are all going to buy atleast 1 game when they get their DS.  If they so happen to know someone else who gets a DS, then they can fire up the mp demo.

What I am wondering is how long will the mp demo be included?  Just upto a few months after the PSP launches?  What will Nintendo do in March when the PSP launches in NA?  Will they lower the price at all, include a better packin, or anything at all?  Or just release some good titles and hope that helps hurt the PSP launch?

Another thing I'm wondering is will the Xmas launch really help the DS a helluva lot (it will to some extent)?  This Xmas has the most AAA titles ever for all systems, they're gonna dig into DS sales.

The best one to port would be the original arcade title, as it's quality is in between the PS1 version and the DC version, which would put it at DS quality.  Although I guess they could do the Soul Calibur DC on the DS, but it would be tamed.

I just read that the over 1.4 million users playing online ps2, is for the USA alone.  Doesn't count any other territories.

Well I'm keeping an eye on Nanostray myself, Iridion 1 was technically great, but the gameplay wasn't hot.  They learned from that and made the gameplay much better in Iridion 2.  Now with Nanostray it looks like a technical marvel on the DS, and hopefully they've combined the technical marvel of Iridion 1 and the gameplay of Iridion 2 together, and increased on it as much as possible.

As far as the PSP battery size, I doubt it's going to be noticeably big at all, that's one thing that Sony has an upperhand over Nintendo is on rechargeable batteries, they've been creating them for decades and have tons of experience making/using them in their plethora of handheld electronic products.  That alone will probably make the PSP battery life respectable compared to the DS.  I'd be surprised if it's not atleast 60% as long as the DS battery life.

Thought I'd add that the game's price is $10 lower than normal from $50 to $40, due to Sega going the $20 route.  Also this holiday season if you buy 2 EA sports titles you get 1 free (any EA sports game).

On the topic of launch titles, I don't think 20 is realistic, nor do I think it is a good idea because people are paying $150 for the system and they're only going to buy 1 to 2 games as well (on top of home console purchases too).  So if 20 titles are there at launch some won't sell well at all.  It will be better if they're staggered so that there are no holes in new releases throughout the weeks/months right after launch.

Electronic Arts had virtually the same thing for NFSUG2, where you design your own vinyls for cars.  It's awesome to see gamers get the chance to have direct input into games like this, I'd like to see more of it in the future (when done well like these two examples).  It also generates more buzz about the game among people, especially those who enter the contest.  I imagine some people will duke it out with their friends trying to design the best vinyls & logos, and flexing their brain's to come up with new ideas and foster creativity.  On top of that they virtually guarantee sales among the creators, those who didn't make the cut (to see what did [they were already interested in getting the game anyway if they entered]), and the friends of those who did make the cut.

General Gaming / RE:New PS2 Official Nov 1
« on: September 21, 2004, 08:21:12 PM »
Sorry I started a new topic (I did make 3 posts in the other one), I figured many people wouldn't have seen it if it was posted in a rumor topic, so I made it official.

Most of the size difference is in width, PS2 model 1 being over 3 inches (w) and the new model being 1 inch (w).  It is smaller all around but it's length keeps it from being walkman type pocket size.

I don't see that it is a top loader, but nor do I see that it is a front loader.  I'd like a front loader but if it's top loading that will mean no more disc read errors (from the bad gear mechanism that caused 95% of them).  The two usb slots are right next to the controller slots.

As far as HD support, I don't think Sony ever had a plan to do much with it for PS2.  Seeing that FFXI was going to utilize it though they came out with it, and including FFXI bundled furthers the fact that they may have released it to avoid having to deal with a bad situation with SquareEnix (SNES CD...).  Although there is also the fact that the people who buy a PS2 now, are mostly people with less money and casual gamers, the old adaptors who won't be inclined to buy the HD for a limited # of games for it.  So they will be displeasing a very small # of people, and there is the chance that they could release something to allow HD access or even a better HD model (not PS2 HD model, just a new HD).

As far as the door release I don't think it's where the memory cards are because there is an eject button to the right of the controller and memory card slots.  Looking at it closely, it does look like a front loader.

If the Xenon doesn't take first place I'll consider Microsoft's endeavour as failed.

and you would use that same logic for Master System to Genesis?  Snes outsold Genesis.  Yet was Genesis a failure?

A company doesn't need to "take first place" for their 2nd system to not equal failure.  If that was the case, the Cube would be Nintendo's 2nd Home Console Failure.

Reiterate a point from last post: The XB (1st system) is neck and neck with the GC (4th home system + popular franchise games + previous fans of for 20 years).  By the end of this generation, the XB will have probably outsold the GC in overall hardware sales (especially when it's price is down to GC's), and their tie in ratio is higher, and they will have alot more games their last years than the GC (equaling an even higher tie in ratio).  And the 3rd party games sell on XB.

In the end, the XB will have sold more games for 3rd parties than GC (equaling more 3rd party for them nex gen than for Ninty) and it will have amassed more consumers loyal to MS systems than the GC has this gen.  When it's all added up, it comes down to this: MS accomplished their goal from the start, which was to get their foot in the industry and make profits with XB 2.  I'll stop now because I'm beginning to sound like I like MS.

If you read the article from the link it says the DC version.  It aint possible to remake the DC version identical, it's gotta be the arcade Soul Edge or the PS1 Soul Blade (may have got the names vice versa'd).  If it is the DC version, it aint gonna look as good, although with DS features it wouldn't matter.  Maybe it's just a new Soul Calibur based off the other vers, with special DS features.

that's what everyone said before the PS1, minus handheld and insert console.

Nevermind about that though, I think both will succeed with different markets.  I'd say it will be close like the closeness of the GC vs XB and their tie in ratios as well.
