true, but changing the names of titles happens alot, close to release too, especially for launch games.  I remember hearing about the official titles for Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Golf Toadstool Tour, and now Mario Power Tennis only right when their boxart was shown.

I would like to ask you, politely, how it is you think they would port DS games?  They have to cut half the screen and take out the touch support.

Also, the DS's main demographic is NOT children.  It is made more universally, and it's main demographic is ACTUALLY males 16-23.  Not really adults, but not children either, mind you.  These people have access to the money to buy a psp.  Also, it is a portable, meaing that the average owner will not be enthralled with their system, since they are probably multi-tasking, with the game being only part of their attention.  They will not stare into the screen and notice minute graffical genious.  Really.
the difference doesn't really matter.

I'm not saying they would port all ds games, but they could port ones that didn't use the two screens in a way that the psp could not.  And they could port alot of games that have touch support (some not, that use it intensively), by just creating new controls.  Besides it is said alot of DS games will have regular controls as a 2nd option because of left handed people, as I mentioned earlier.

I never said the DS demographic is children.  But the DS demographic is a younger one than the psp's, we've heard that from the beginning.  I don't know where you got the ages 16-23.  I didn't say DS owners don't have access to the money to buy a psp, I said for psp buyers being an older demographic the extra money is actually less of their disposable income than ds buyers demographic.  I don't see how playing a portable is just multitasking and you don't notice how good the game plays or looks.

Truth, the extra memory available for games doesn't just come down to better graphics.  Extra memory can go a long ways in other parts of the game.  Especially artificial intelligence.  In some games that can be a big factor, like fps, simulations, and racing games, some of my fav genres that I stated earlier as why I like the psp.  Theres tons of things extra memory can let you do, I won't get into that discussion.

mysticgohan, I'm entitled to my own opinion thank you.  I wouldn't say people are just pointing out the good points of the ds and the flaws of the psp.  Rather people are exaggerating the flaws they believe the psp will have.  "You know what will be.... will be" yes so you're really saying you know that the psp is going to cost 200 more than the ds, you know the battery life, etc etc.  Unless you're a psychic, you don't know what will be.... will be.  You antagonizing me is only going to result in me being more voicefull.  I really like how you say, "You have no idea..." (referrring to me) and "but I know..." (referring to you).  You're the almighty knowing master and I know nothing at all.  Then you should've known already that I think rts games on ds will obliterate rts games on psp.

Regaring Halo and XB, I agree it's responsible for a large portion of XB sales.  But pointing out that it was not added to the platinum hits long after it's release shouldn't be an argument because every console company this generation has done that.  SSBM is still $29.99, and it's players choice.  Infact Nintendo has gone and made 2 different players choice prices for a number of games with some being $19.99 (F-Zero GX) and others being $29.99 (Mario Golf TT).  And the games I used as examples went to players choice at the same time.  Sony has done the same regarding keeping games at the higher prices longer, just not as bad as N and MS in appearance, but given their larger user base it would equate to just as bad.

I just read that Gamestop's online page has updated it's Super Mario 64 DS boxart for the game, it looks just like the Spiderman boxart as far as how the box is.  The art itself is much better though.  Since Spiderman is a launch title, and it's boxart has been shown, you could then assume that Super Mario 64 DS is confirmed as a launch title as well.    Super Mario 64 Boxart!

The fact that DS games look like they will use the same boxes manufactured for gba games has a significant pro and con in my opinion.  First the average shmoe may not even notice that these boxes are actually for a new console, especially if they're placed right next to gba in the stores.  If he does notice they're for a new console, he may not know what the DS actually is and put it off as just another gameboy.  However, since Nintendo will be using the same boxes, they will be saving money and they will not have to worry about shortages.

EDIT: they also have the boxart for Mario Power Tennis for GC. Mario Power Tennis

Big deal you have to buy a memory card, it's such an outrage because it's a portable?  It uses discs how else would you save games?  And since it supports 2.0 usb connection to ps2 and pc's you can probably put extra save files on atleast pc's if not ps2 as well.  You're already saying the memory card/stick's will cost $30 even though there hasn't been anything to base that off except what memory sticks cost for cameras.

I don't see truth, how you can say if it's over 200 only techheads will buy it, when the DS is going to cost 150.  The PSP is going for an older demographic, who have more money that a purchase of a PSP at say 200-250 is actually less of an investment for them than the DS at 150 is for it's major demographic.  And I don't see how people say the DS can do anything the PSP can do as far as games.  The specs of the system alone make that not true, and the medium for PSP games is over 12 times as much data you can fit on a DS cart.  As far as battery life well yea it's still an issue, but if it does turn out to be 2-6 hours, that's not all that bad for what it's running, compared to 6-10 for a cart system.  If developers wanted to they could have games come out on memory sticks at the same size of DS memory or larger and not have to run the disc drive on the PSP at all.  It would be great for ports of DS games and compilations of old games.  And the battery life would probably then equal the DS's.

I'm just not sold on a 2nd screen and stylus control, especially since it's being said every DS game may include regular controls for people who are left handed.  Even without that, I like my games with the controls that have been 'perfected' since the NES, and I love analog control, I just don't see some of my favorite genres like racing, fps, and simulations as much fun without analog control.  I certainly don't want to have to race with a stylus while holding the DS in place with my left hand and also using my left hand to manipulate the digital pad.  And I wouldn't want my hud on a separate screen for a fps or racing game, especially fast multiplayer ones.

We will find out tomorrow the price of games right?  Or would it be very late tonight since it's like already tomorrow in Japan?  Anyways I've heard for months now that DS games will cost $35 so if your planning on walking out the store with 3-4, you're gonna need alotta moola.

Uh I guess go with ebay, unless you goto a used games store.  I wouldn't do it myself though, that is, take apart my games system to make a remote for it.  But to each their own.  Be careful.

And I've never heard of a fall break either.  What is ISD?

I've had the same exact problem.  Funny thing is it happened right after I clicked on a link in the PGC forums from someones thread.  I was then bombarded with pop-ups, among other things.  I got rid of the other cr@p-e-o-lee but the popups were still coming.  Usually it would be about 6 popups simultaneously, as if one was being generated from the prior popup.  Other times when I left my pc idle, I would come back and there would be upto 25 popups up.  So I did a search on google finally and decided to dl a pop up blocker.  The file size for it was only about 500 kb.  Try Panicware.com that's the one I currently have.  It blocks about 90% of the popups I had.  The only thing is with popup blockers I guess is that it takes them a second to block the popup so instead of dealing with popups you manually close that can turn a 30 minute internet session into an hour long one, half the time closing the ads, you now get about a second where the computer stops while it closes the ads.  Also you have to hold down the control key when you actually want something to popup a new page.  Good luck, right now I'm deleting all my files, and am going to reformat soon.  I also use Lavasoft Adaware to get rid of all the spyware that comes too.

MS would be stronger in America and would attract more of the American titles which I usually don't care about anyway.

Like the other guys said, it's because the majority of people who wanted a PS2 already have one...  The fact that XB are getting closer to PS2 sales is bad for Nintendo.  Many of the people buying XB already own PS2.  And now there 2nd console is the XB instead of the GC.

I disagree that there is no real need for both Sony and MS to have consoles because they provide the same types of games.  I own PS2 and GC and there are tons of titles on XB I want to play but can't (that are quite different from PS2 games I like).  There are alot of titles on every system that are different from the others.  I wouldn't call the Cubes popular titles more hardcore, most of them are the 1st party games of long standing franchises.  The XB has shooters and PC games, among other games that are really hardcore, games I find that only a certain portion of gamers play.  The fact that you mention MS would attract more American titles you don't care about is part of the number of titles that are hardcore for many gamers.  Titles that aren't popular in japan, fps and derivatives of fps games.

I feel the same way about Nintendo recently, and I haven't played my Cube for longer than an hour at a time since 2003.  There hasn't been a game that's been released that I actually wanted since like Soul Calibur 2 and F-zero GX.  The only one this year so far was ToS and Pikmin 2.  I'm not interested in MP2 at all, bought the first MP the day it came out and never got into it, if I have time one day maybe I will.  Right now the only GC games I'm interested in is RE4, SF2, Advance Wars, Geist, and LoZ.  I've just been having way too much fun with my PS2, especially playing online.  And some games for PS2 I own, have good GC versions but lack online play so it's a no brainer as to which ver to buy.  I do want an XB for a few games, and maybe one day will buy one.  I understand your long explanation because if you just said "I bought an XB" you would get some flack.  I hope Revolution changes things as far as the games Nintendo releases and gets from 3rd parties.

EDIT: The good thing about GC compared to my PS2 is that I can play 4 person multiplayer with friends, but that occasion happens maybe once a year, and now that we're getting older I will be lucky to have it happen at all.  By the same token though we can do that with XB too, with alot more games.

It looks okay, but I'm not concerned about the graphics.  So Yoshi uses a boat?  Reminds me of Zelda WW.  I don't want more boats.  After Metroid Prime 2 using the whole light world and dark world idea that had been used way earlier in Zelda ALttP, I thought using Zelda ideas would slow down.

sounds like you like first person shooters, so if that's the type of game you're looking for I echo the people who said Timesplitters 2.  If you want to wait or want to know about future FPS multiplayer games for the Cube, there will be some of those released between now and mid January including Timesplitters 3 and Goldeneye Rogue Agent, there could be more I forgot but that also depends on whether the companies will decide to release them on GC too.  Ofcourse now that I think of it you have an Xbox so you'd be better off getting those on XB, but you already want Halo 2.  Nevermind then if you want good FPS multiplayer now, Timesplitters 2 is the best and it's only $15 used and $15-20 new.

Maybe but what Ian said sounds a little biased, and reflects a hatred for the company.  They got members of the Quest team to help them make a strategy rpg, they didn't buy them out to eliminate them.  And then they let Yasumi Matsuno do Vagrant Story.  And now he is doing FF 12.  Why would they let him do VS and then lead FF 12, if they were just "buying him out"?  I wouldn't just buy someone out because I wanted to get rid of them and then let them head up my companies flagship franchise.

More like, wow these guys can make some good rpgs, the kind we haven't focused on ourselves.  Our fans love the games we make now and we can't change complete direction with our employees to make those types of games all on our own successfully (think of some of the games they've made that are radically different from their usual rpgs).  Let's get some of these guys to help us make a great strategy rpg.  And so they do and the game rules.

That was not the argument.  You said they became #1 for nothing of their doing.

And yes it was Square's FF7 that got all the other third parties to jump onto PS1...  Yes the game came out 2 years after the PS came out, and that made all the companies who already were not on PS goto them lol.  The majority of companies were already developing and released tons of games themselves before FF7 came out 2 years later.....

Actually they did... sort of.  If Sega didn't make a 2D console with 3D capabilities thrown in at the last minute and Nintendo hadn't made a cartridge system Sony probably wouldn't have lasted five years.  They got REALLY lucky.  Both of their competitors f*cked up huge.  The reason the PS2 is so successful is because of the Playstation name, the year head start, Nintendo's constant Cube related brain farts, and Microsoft's inability to break into Japan.  The Playstation was in the right place at the right time and they've been riding that wave ever since.  If the PSP is a success it will because of the Playstation name, NOT for any good reason.  Sony so far has made virtually ever mistake other company's have made when trying to enter the portable market.

So because Sony designed the best console last generation, got all the third parties to support it, and got many to make exclusives for the PS1, among so many other things, they became #1 for nothing?  If the PS1 received more competition it still would've lasted more than 5 years, it's sold over 100,000,00 units for consoles alone.

Sony hasn't made every mistake other companies have made in the portable market...

The XB2 wasn't pure conjecture.  Quote from GI, "We can confirm beyond a shadow of a doubt that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is coming to Xbox 2."  The same was clearly not said for PS3.  Yes neither Sony or MS has made the moves to get exclusive rights to it, but that doesn't mean it can't be developed for their systems.  The executive producer of the game is even quoted in the article describing how to control the game on an XB2 controller.

Relating being able to interact with every object to using those objects as weapons shouldn't be said.  Having objects being interactive, such as all of the ones on the table in the article doesn't mean every object in the game is interactive (like blades of grass or a tree).  Also it doesn't mean those objects can be used as deadly weapons, it would be pretty ridiculous to implement every object as a weapon both in terms of development time/cost and game users.

It's already been said that XB2 will not be like XB in terms of profitability.  And it's been said it will not include a hard drive among other things only because they don't want to lose tons of money on the console.  Saying they're thinking about the long term for profitability, is the same as what the other companies will tell you.  Sony and Nintendo don't make profit on their consoles, only in the long term they do, when they've produced so many of them, and it's been a few years since the consoles debuted.

I've read from different videogame journalist sources that Revolution Kits are not out yet.  But even if developers aren't directly saying, "we don't have R. dev. kits", they can talk about the games they're working on for next generation.  And developers have, but theres a trend that either they're making the game for XB2 or PS3.  And theres no mention of Revolution.  The only companies I've heard that already have games in substantial development for Revolution are Nintendo, a few 2nd parties, and Electronic Arts (who will just be porting the versions they're making for the other consoles they already have dev kits for).

If the cases look like that, mainstream casual players will see the DS as just a gameboy, as it's cases are virtually indentical other than Nintendo DS replacing GBA on the side, and many people will only see the cases in stores prominently, with the consoles tucked somewhere below the games or behind the counter, etc.  Seems Nintendo is going the cheap route here, like using the same control pad on GC/GBA.  Not good news.

General Gaming / FF XI to jump platforms?, 200 gb Blue Ray discs?
« on: September 25, 2004, 08:40:24 PM »
In the new Rumor control at Gamespot they address the issue of the PS2-2 (my own achronim for the new model) not having a HD bay.  Sony didn't think it was much of a problem because consumers who want the HD are hardcore gamers (can't argue that) and since 27 million PS2 are in hands of consumers in NA they feel people who want the HD already have the console for it.  (I agree there too)

I mean how many consumers out there who want the HD don't already own a PS2?  The people buying a PS2 now are either casual or wouldn't have the money to afford the HD and/or FFXI fees.  The FF XI producer wasn't as upbeat, suggesting looking into changing platforms for FFXI, but his wording is a little vague, so I'm going to post half the quote here and if it's deemed a violation you can remove the quote, but please leave the rest intact.  Here's what he said regarding changing platforms for FFXI, "because once the PlayStation 2 is phased out, [the FFXI] population will have to move somewhere."  Now what I take from that is that he means the people who don't already own FFXI, who plan to for PS2, who don't already own a PS2 and won't be buying one until the first model is phased out.  I think he's a little too hopeful for FFXI sales, however if they keep making significant expansion packs like they say they may, then his opinion holds a little more weight.  I think it can be solved though by simply Sony continuing limited production of the old model PS2 for the small amount of gamers who plan to buy the console still, the HD, and the fees for FFXI (still think that's unlikely).

--BLUE RAY 200 GB--
The next thing worth reading in their rumor section was about the fact that Sony has developed an 8 layered, 200 gb Blue Ray disc for PS3.  And Sony plans on having 100 gb BR discs available to consumers in 2007.  The details if it's real will be given Oct 11-15 at some international meeting.

I don't see how they would need that much storage for games next generation.  I do know that they're pushing the medium limits now with many dual layered PS2 games and some PS2 games on two dvds.  And back in the PS1 days games were on as much as 4 cd's.  And I read something regarding how the Gran Turismo series started on 1 cd, then 2 cds, then a dvd, and now a dual layered dvd.  I really see the lowest storage amount for Blue Ray (23 gb) to be enough for a next generation game, but I could be wrong.  I have a feeling the whole 100-200 gb deal is to demonstrate that Blue Ray should be the next entertainment medium chosen instead of the competitors HD-DVD's.
