Can people please be more clear about the things? I saw AFL and thought "Cool, an new Australian Rules game". After a Google search for the game, it turns it it's just some backwater gridiron league or something.

If Nintendo are smart, they'll make sure this isn't as awful as "Mario Pinball" was.

Meanwhile, the DS is looking more gimmicky as each day passes. I'm pleased haven't bought one - GBA rocks my world, because the games are plentiful and - y'know, good. I'm also liking the PSP as a possiblilty although I'll probably wait for a revision and a price drop.

Aside from the HD-DVD part, the rest is from rumourmongers like IGN.

they have about 7% desktop computer marketshare. (sic) And in terms of individual industries, some such as Education and Graphic Design they have a far larger chunk of the market.

Okay, well my figures may have been dodgy (that was the lowest one I've heard), but the most common figure I've seen is  1.7%. I'm more sure of the fact that the major GNU/Linux ditributions now have a larger proportion of desktop 'sales', even though Apple are now using the kernel themselves.

Apple doesn't use the Linux kernel. They use a sort of Mach and *BSD hybrid.

I seem to recall reading the Cube has a lower attach rate than the PS2 and Xbox. :/

Hey, it's just a shame the port is coming so late in the game (no pun intended). Otherwise it could have gone a long way towards illustrating just how pitiful the PS2 is in contrast to the Gamecube in terms of technical capabilities. There could have even been a positive effect for the Cube.

"And the graphics, believe me, are not "dumbed down".

In many ways, they are better than the Xenon's graphics."

Oh, so you know about Xenon now as well?

Give it a rest, seriously. No one is falling for it, so you may as well keep your bragging and vague "hints" to yourself.

It would be far too costly to develop.

I think the Revolution will take advantage of Sharp's 3D displays. It will, however be entirely optional. I think this because of how a Nintendo engineer (I can't remember who) was quoted as saying that the Revolution will be capable of being hooked up to a computer monitor in addition to a television set. I'm guessing this was more of a hint than anyone picked up on.

Oh yeah, and as much as I love the Gamecube controller, I'd prefer to play a platform game with the Sony controller as opposed to playing a fighting game with the Nintendo one.

Damn, if anything demos help sales. They're a great promotional tool and are never substitutes for full games. The only reason anyone has to worry about demos is if their game is rubbish, and that's very rarely the case with Nintendo.

The main problem I find with NCL is that they don't seem to realise they're in trouble, especially in the Western markets. When I hear Iwata talk about how the market in Japan is shrinking I can't help but think he should more be talking about how Nintendo's market has shrunk disproportionately to its competitors and talking about what he is doing about it. Nintendo isn't the market leader when it comes to home consoles, and as Steven kent pointed out, their share has almost halved with each generation following the NES. Why not try and win back the gamers who have gone to Sony and then go after non-gamer market, which is much more of a longshot.

Yeah, Mario Party 6 is a pretty amazing piece of art.

Like every other company, Nintendo has a responsibility to maximise returns for its shareholders. i.e. They want to make money; Steven Kent is just pointing out how they can do that.

If you think Nintendo Australia is bad, experience the horror that is Nintendo NZ (Monaco). MGS: TTS is a super rare title here, which is ridiculous considering it should have been one of the biggest Gamecube releases of 2004. Not to mention all the games are overly expensive, and available only in specialty stores.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Atari... will they ever catch on? Doubtful
« on: January 10, 2005, 04:07:28 PM »
Who cares about Infogrames? They're insignificant and adopting the Atari brand was a pathetic, last gasp attempt to change that. The only decent game I can recall them publishing this generation was Ikaruga. The first Godzilla game was okay, but nothing special; Enter the Matrix and all that Dragonball rubbish I can do without.

He brings up a few interesting points, most interesting was how Nintendo are playing a short term game and Sony and Microsoft are playing a long term game in terms of marketshare. I think he's pretty on the money with that and it will be interesting to see how Nintendo ends up in terms of home console marketshare next generation. When you think about it, Gamecube started pretty strongly but seems to have petered out in terms of sales AND mindshare in recent times (despite the fact the quality games keep coming).

I also thought the "know your market and stick to it" point was interesting, but one I disagree with. If anything Nintendo should want to appeal to everyone who plays videogames, rather that catering to Nintendo fans alone. That was one of my points in a previous thread about the overuse of Mario; he restricts general appeal to Nintendo fans, it isn't as powerful a brand as it was 15 years ago. You can be family-friendly while still being everyone-else friendly.

The stylus could be feasibly used instead of the combat buttons. Imagine drawing a loop to throw a combo instead of hitting a button sequence, it could be pretty neat and novel.

I think Touch & Go looks to be a good game, it just isn't a huge system seller like Pokemon, Halo, Super Smash Brothers or GTA.

Ouch... things are looking sparse on the DS. It would have been nice to have a big game for it to compete with the PSP launch. (And no, I don't consider "Yoshi Touch & Go" to be a big title)

TalkBack / RE: Nintendo and Konami Announce DDR with Mario
« on: January 07, 2005, 08:44:44 PM »
At the moment Nintendo is catering for Nintendo fans, and that is no way to grow marketshare. Sure, you'll sell a few more copies to those who already own your console, but you won't expand your install base. People who like Mario enough to buy a game because he's in it own a Nintendo console already. Frankly, that's all there is to it as far as I'm concerned. Nintendo can either continue with their niche in the market (I'm talking GC here) or try an capture back some of the ground they've lost; they seem to have chose the former, rather than the latter.

Say what you will about Sony, but they have been the innovators this generation. Eyetoy and Singstar have been MASSIVE hits for them, especially in PAL territories. They have used brand new control mechanisms, didn't rely on an already established franchise, and have been, once again, huge hits. Why? Because they extend past the usual gamer. The sort of thing Nintendo has been talking about, but so far hasn't really pulled off. Mario isn't going to make new gamers, but that sort of thing is, and it's disappointing to see Nintendo be following, rather than leading in this case (and not to mention following in another Mario spin-off). Sony has captured new gamers; Nintendo hasn't (at least not en masse).

By the way, the worst example we've seen of this existing franchise mentality, when Miyamoto demanded Dinosaur Planet become Star Fox Adventures; I doubt it sold many (if any) Gamecubes, and made a bit of a mess in an otherwise solid game.

TalkBack / RE: Nintendo and Konami Announce DDR with Mario
« on: January 07, 2005, 05:09:17 PM »
What's amusing about Mr. Aurion's post is that he doesn't argue the point, instead dismisses it as "whining".

Let's look at how many games Mario has appeared in, in this generation...

Mario Power Tennis
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Super Mario Sunshine
NBA Street Vol. 3
Mario Kart: Double Dash
DDR w/ Mario
Mario Baseball
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Mario Party 4
Mario Party 5
Mario Party 6

12 GAMES!!! That doesn't even include indirect spin-offs, like Luigi's Mansion and Wario World, and cameos in games such Animal Crossing. Think how much larger that figure gets when you include DS and GBA titles.

I'm a little Marioed out, and wouldn't be surprised if the public is too. I'd rather see new franchises than more games starring Mario, and the gravy train can't roll on forever.

Bloodworth: As a Nintendo fan, it doesn't hold any extra appeal for me. DDR is DDR, as far as I'm concerned, and the same game I played in the arcades 6 years, with Mario or without him.

By the way, what happened to kicking the much-lamented "younger audience orientated" image?

LAME.
Nintendo really needs to stop renting Mario out and throwing him in any game they can't come up with an original identity for.

What's worse is seeing most of the posters here go nuts over it. Who cares if it has a fat plumber in it? It's still the same freakin' game you played at the arcade in 1999!!!

Please people, do the world a favour and skip this sort of rubbish and instead go out and purchase a good, original, interesting game like Ikaruga, Beyond Good and Evil, Alien Hominid or DK: Jungle Beat. Just anything that isn't a sequel or rehash starring Mario will do, come to think of it.

This is a smart move and a good deal - it's just a shame they didn't do it 3 years ago.
