Who knew that this golden oldie had such deft platforming skills? (SPOILERS INSIDE)

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/36145

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze will be released for Wii U on February 21, 2014, as announced during the recent VGX awards show.

In addition to a release date for the previously delayed 2D platformer, Nintendo and Retro Studios unveiled the title's fourth playable character to be Cranky Kong, the grandfather of the titular Donkey Kong who was previously teased via a leaked image of the game's box art.

Cranky Kong, who makes his series debut as a selectable character, has the unique ability of bouncing on his walking stick, which enables him to gain greater altitude than a regular jump and traverse otherwise dangerous hazards, such as spikes - not dissimilar to Scrooge McDuck's signature mechanic in Capcom's Ducktales franchise.

New gameplay footage showed certain collectibles that can only be obtained by utilising Cranky's capabilities. He joins a roster of previously-revealed Kong family members Donkey, Diddy and Dixie.

Can we still be surprised by games in the internet era? Actually, for that matter, do we need to be?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/editorial/35971

Remember when you were younger and every video game was a surprise? In the modern day, there's nothing quite like those feelings of discovery and wonderment when you picked out a game based on its box art and eventually came to cherish it as one of your favorites. How we share and collect information just doesn't allow for it any more. But would you really want things to go back to the old ways? Can you honestly say that ignorance is bliss?

I've written in the past about my appreciation for the Nintendo Direct format, which is greatly superior to the days when it seemed like there was nothing to be excited about because of the almost year-long lack of communication from the House of Mario. There's no denying, though, that the presentations are far from perfect, usually in what they choose to talk about and how much, or in some cases how little, they show.

The most recent Direct broadcast told us about numerous upcoming Nintendo 3DS titles, Pikmin 3 DLC and the long-awaited cross-platform Nintendo Network ID update. However, all of that was overshadowed in the social media conversation afterwards by the unexpected video at the very end for Super Mario 3D World.

The trailer revealed 10 previously unknown features about the Wii U game du jour, including some secret content and post-game unlockables, and suddenly, a chorus of online viewers stirred a furore about spoilers and diminished excitement. (Don't worry, I'm not going to discuss any of the trailer in this article.)

Super Mario 3D World looks very promising. It shouldn't be passed up just because you are in the know.

There is some precedence for this with Nintendo Direct presentations. During the special showcase for The Wonderful 101, a similar incident occurred when the six-minute launch trailer at the end outlined a large portion of the game's storyline - suffice to say, the reaction on social networks was similarly incensed.

For me personally, I've come to accept that with the rise of widespread mainstream games media and advent of technologies like Facebook and Twitter, this is simply how things are now. If you, like me, spend upwards of an hour a day perusing news and reviews on the web, you find that details small and big about anything and everything video games get absorbed by osmosis, often when it's not intentional.

That's the nature of 24-hour press about unreleased entertainment products. It used to bug me, the fact that I knew so much about so many games before they launched. I compare my knowledge base of Super Mario Galaxy with that of Super Mario Galaxy 2 - in the three years between those two platformers, my habits of consuming news changed greatly, so while Galaxy was a bundle of unexpected mechanics, I more or less knew all the new mechanics before I encountered them in Galaxy 2.

But you know what? That didn't make Super Mario Galaxy 2 less fun or any less capable at capturing my imagination. So what that I knew about the Rock Suit and Cloud Suit from pre-release media? So what if I saw the awesome Flip-Swap level played out in a demonstration video? If anything, it made me more excited to find them in my play-through and try them out for myself.

Being more informed is good, and in my view, the whole premise of going on a media blackout in the weeks running up to a game's launch date is a fruitless exercise. At the top of this article, I referred to picking out games at a young age because of what cover art looked the best, and while I acquired some of my most treasured titles of all time through these means, there were plenty of times when the cool-looking box housed a real clunker of a game. I won't make those mistakes again, because I want to be informed.

The existence of the wall-merging ability in A Link Between Worlds is far more significant than it being unexpected.

That doesn't mean I don't like surprises, and yeah, I'll admit that it's somewhat sad that I haven't encountered nearly as many mind blowing shocks in the past couple of generations. However, it is important to maintain perspective. It is not the surprise that you should be looking forward to; it's the feature itself.

Does the knowledge that Mega Man will be in the next Smash Bros. mean that I'm not going to like it as much? Of course not. Does knowing about all the new gameplay mechanics in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds mean that I'll have a negative outlook on the game because I saw it all coming? No chance; in fact, there would probably be a whole lot less of you interested in that game if you didn't know anything about it.

Whilst it might allow for a neat moment if I went in with a total blank slate and discovered these elements all for myself, what matters most is that they are in the game, not that they catch me unaware. So to those of you saying you no longer want to play Super Mario 3D World because all these components of the game have been "spoiled for you,” I say: if they are genuinely exciting and fun, they will stand on their own, surprise or not.

And you never know, there may still be a surprise or two waiting in the wings...

TalkBack / Nintendo Pocket Football Club Announced for 3DS eShop in Europe
« on: November 13, 2013, 12:17:18 PM »

If only managing a football club were actually this simple...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35967

Nintendo Pocket Football Club, a first-party sports management sim, has been announced for release on the European 3DS eShop next year.

Released as a Japan-only download in 2012 under the title of Pocket Soccer League: Calciobit, the game asks you to customise and manage their own football team, by selecting team tactics and formations, buying and selling players on the transfer market, and conducting training sessions. The actual football games do not involve interaction from the player - rather, you must adapt your match strategy to affect how your team performs.

The title features a full suite of single-player content and multiplayer options for both local and online matches. Nintendo Pocket Football Club is scheduled to launch in Europe in 2014.

It's time to enjoy Pikmin in suitably festive style - and hey, an old friend is here too!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35964

The third volume of Mission Mode downloadable content for Pikmin 3, named the Fortress of Festivity, will arrive in the Wii U eShop on December 2.

Unlike volumes 1 and 2, this latest batch of DLC will feature eight entirely new stages and enemies as opposed to altered levels from the single-player campaign. The levels are set in numerous environments, including a beach, a construction site, a factory, and a house during a Christmas party, and will be split between four "Collect Treasure" missions and four "Battle Enemies" missions.

In addition, Pikmin 2 protagonist Louie will be playable in the game, working alongside Captain Olimar and the three Koppai astronauts. Although players will not be able to control him immediately, he will be added to the squad of explorers once he is found and rescued in a given level.

The Fortress of Festivity stages will be made available for purchase in North America and Europe early next month. A software update for Pikmin 3 will also be issued on December 2 in order to make the DLC compatible with the core game. Players who download this update will receive two of the new levels free of charge.

Milk bars, witch brooms, and a menagerie of bizarre characters.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35960

A host of new characters and optional side-quests in the upcoming Nintendo 3DS title The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds has been revealed in the latest Nintendo Direct.

The newly-unveiled NPCs include Irene, a witch who will help Link to fast-travel between various locations in Hyrule and Lorule, and the Milk Bar Owner, similar to the character in earlier Zelda game Majora's Mask, who instigates a major side-quest involving someone that desires premium milk. We also saw more footage of the title's damsel in distress, Seres, who is trapped in a painting, as well as the primary antagonist, Yuga.

Furthermore, a previously unseen item was shown off, called the Zora Flippers, which enable Link to swim and dive in bodies of water.

This is just one of the announcements made about A Link Between Worlds during the presentation, along with the StreetPass Shadow Link feature. The game will be released in North America and Europe on November 22, and later in Japan on December 26.

Imprisoning an alien lifeform to conduct secret experiments is never a smart idea.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/35922

Kickstarter Watch is a feature that attempts to help readers stay apace of Nintendo-related Kickstarter crowdfunding projects. In recent years, crowdfunding has become a popular alternative method of funding for many original, niche, and independent projects and products. Although the campaigns mentioned within the feature are actively soliciting fund-raising pledges, their inclusion does not constitute an endorsement on the part of Nintendo World Report.

"Of Man’s First Disobedience, and the Fruit
Of that Forbidden Tree, whose mortal taste
Brought Death into the World, and all our woe..."

The connoisseurs of classic literature amongst you may have recognised one of the classic quotations from Paradise Lost, the 17th century epic poem by John Milton that tells the origin story of Satan and his temptation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

What you may not have noticed is that the title happens to be shared by an upcoming Metroidvania-style game currently doing the rounds on Kickstarter. It isn't the most obvious connection, given that said game prominently stars aliens, but although its debut trailer is deliberately cagey about plot specifics, the early indications are that Paradise Lost: First Contact will be giving more than just a superficial reference to its namesake poetry.

"We actually have lot of people talking about this. The fact is that the title is not only related to the events of the game, but we've also taken many parallels with Milton's poem," said Enol Martínez, designer and animator at Asthree Works, the game's three-person development house based in Gijón, Spain.

This is where the adventure begins for our tentacled alien friend, codenamed "Subject W."

Who says that aliens are the enemy? Science fiction used to dictate that any encounter with extraterrestrial beings would be met with hostility, that we were simply defending ourselves against an all-out invasion from an unknown species. More recent sci-fi stories, however, have introduced this recurring idea that maybe humans are the ones with the ulterior motives; the ones with the desire to mess with the hierarchy of the universe.

Take Subject W, the alien plant protagonist of Paradise Lost: First Contact. After crash-landing on Earth, along with various other lifeforms, W is captured in a hidden research facility for the purposes of secret genetic experimentation. It's the specimen's subsequent escape that sparks the whole impetus for this adventure.

According to Enol, the biblical tale is just one of the sources that influenced the design of Paradise Lost, both in story and gameplay terms. The non-linear 2D exploration pioneered by old-school Metroids and Castlevanias is easily seen in its DNA, but the stealth action of Metal Gear Solid and the environmental puzzle solving of the Oddworld series have also left their mark in this game world.

However, despite the significant emphasis on using stealth, the developers are looking to make it so players can tackle a situation in multiple ways. This is dependent on how players choose to use and upgrade Subject W's abilities through an RPG-inspired skill tree.

Observe the possibilities - these are three potential ways you could choose to deal with this pesky security guard.

"An important fact of the game is that you could confront situations with stealth methods or action manoeuvres, but the game is more focused on the first one," said Enol.

"On the stealth side, you got some skills like an Octocamo similar to Snake in MGS, and the decoys, little seeds that grow and move through the areas without alerting the guards and other enemies.

"When direct facing, there's skills like the shield, the gas bomb or the mental control spines," he added.

The gameplay video demonstrates the multi-faceted potential of these powers. Little decoys are used to activate mechanisms and disable security systems, and a shell-like shield helps to protect Subject W from both enemy fire and environmental hazards. We also get a glimpse of the platforming sections in Paradise Lost, heightening the evocation of Super Metroid further still.

Even more striking about the trailer, though, is the look of the game. Enol describes it as a style that allows them to 'mix simplicity with a great level of animation detail on the characters.' Certainly, the animation fluidity cannot be denied, but the fact that these characters and objects are entirely made of pixels makes it that much more impressive when everything starts moving at speed.

An escape sequence involving a platforming ascent through a vertical shaft... Ring any bells, Metroid fans?

Sounds like an exciting premise; so what are the chances that we will be playing Paradise Lost: First Contact in 2014? With 20 days to go, the Kickstarter campaign sits at over $60,000 of its initial $70,000 funding goal. For the game to be released on Wii U, however, quite a bit more money is being asked for - $250,000, to be precise.

If that appears a lofty stretch goal, the team at Asthree Works are well aware of the concerns. Their response to them highlights just how much it can cost to develop a video game in this day and age.

"Many people ask why this goal is so high and this seems to be a constant in Kickstarter projects," Enol said.

"In our case, we are a really small team. If the campaign reaches that goal, we must hire external support to complete the Wii U version as best we can, plus create a great experience with the GamePad, which takes time and money."

At this moment the game has a long way to go before its status as a Wii U title is cemented. It would seem appropriate, given its lineage to a beloved Nintendo franchise, but for now, Paradise Lost: First Contact is in the hands of the crowdfunding community.

The Kickstarter campaign for Paradise Lost: First Contact will complete its funding period on December 1. Several stretch goals are lined up, including home console support, secret chapters, and graphical enhancements. For more information, click here.

TalkBack / Super Mario 3D World Features Live Big-Band Music
« on: November 02, 2013, 07:04:07 AM »

Following in the footsteps of Galaxy, live-recorded music is on the agenda for 3D World.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35869

Nintendo's upcoming Wii U platformer Super Mario 3D World will incorporate several live orchestrated songs in its soundtrack.

According to the game's lead composer Mahito Yokota, much of the background music was recorded using live instruments, similar to the Super Mario Galaxy games on Wii, which utilised a full 50-piece symphony orchestra.

"There are naturally a lot of tracks performed live. We're arranging the music with a big-band feel, taking advantage of a full horn section with trumpets and saxophones," said Yokota in an interview with Destructoid.

Super Mario 3D World will be released first in Japan, on November 21, in North America on November 22 and a week later in Europe on November 29. An example of the game's jazzy big-band music can be heard in the trailer below.

A fix is on the way, but for now, players are advised to check Nintendo's guide to bypass this glitch.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35773

Nintendo has acknowledged that there is a save data corruption bug in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y and is currently preparing a solution for it.

Many reports have appeared online since the game's worldwide launch on October 12 from players who were experiencing issues upon loading their file after saving their progress in Lumiose City. The glitch will cause the game to not respond to any control input once it has been reloaded.

A free application will be released on the Nintendo 3DS eShop in the near future that will allow players to recover their game data. In the meantime, Nintendo has published a detailed diagram on how the glitch can be avoided, which is shown below.

TalkBack / Watch Dogs Pushed Back Until Spring 2014
« on: October 15, 2013, 01:58:46 PM »

Hacking into Chicago's mainframe will have to wait a few more months.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35712

Upcoming open-world action game Watch Dogs has been delayed until spring 2014, several months after its initial November 2013 release date.

Ubisoft today issued a statement explaining that this delay is to ensure that the development team can produce a high quality final product.

"Our ambition from the start with Watch Dogs has been to deliver something that embodies what we wanted to see in the next-generation of gaming. It is with this in mind that we've made the tough decision to delay the release until Spring 2014," the statement read.

"We struggled with whether we would delay the game. But from the beginning, we have adopted the attitude that we will not compromise on quality. As we got closer to release, as all the pieces of the puzzle were falling into place in our last push before completion, it became clear to us that we needed to take the extra time to polish and fine tune every detail so we can deliver a truly memorable and exceptional experience."

Revealed at last year's E3, Watch Dogs is a futuristic action-adventure title starring Aiden Pearce, a hacker who gains access to all electronic and information systems in Chicago. Earlier this month, the game's creative director, Jonathan Morin, stated that the Wii U version would have superior graphics compared to the current generation versions on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Toon Link is the latest addition to a now 16-strong character roster, which includes newcomers such as Villager, the Wii Fit Trainer and Capcom's Mega Man.

NWR's crowdfunding highlights feature returns with a look at the $2 million project that aims to channel the spirit of Mega Man.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/feature/35418

Kickstarter Watch is a feature that attempts to help readers stay apace of Nintendo-related Kickstarter crowdfunding projects. In recent years, crowdfunding has become a popular alternative method of funding for many original, niche, and independent projects and products. Although the campaigns mentioned within the feature are actively soliciting fund-raising pledges, their inclusion does not constitute an endorsement on the part of Nintendo World Report.

The world is in danger. Robots everywhere have fallen under control of a malicious virus and are running amok. Our fate rests with a small humanoid robot hero - only he can destroy the 8 powerful ringleaders, take their special powers and extinguish the destructive robotic revolution once and for all.

If that sounds like the 20-second pitch for almost any mainline Mega Man game, well... you would be entirely correct to think so. However, it is also very much the narrative being created around Mighty No. 9, the new 2D platformer currently taking the video game crowdfunding community by storm.

This is a concept image for Mighty No. 9. The final game may not resemble it, but even now, the Mega Man influence is plain to see.

Nostalgia is a funny thing. Any avid fan of Nintendo games in the last couple of console generations will know of the delicate balance between calling back to those happy memories of your favorite childhood games, and innovating on old ideas and breaking new ground. In the case of Mighty No. 9, this tricky balancing act is undoubtedly a major consideration for Comcept founder and Mega Man co-creator, Keiji Inafune.

"What hasn't changed is listening to the fans: I've always felt it's important to hear their opinions. And while it's clear that they want new, fresh experiences from my games, I know they also hunger for elements of the classic action games of my past," said Inafune on Mighty No. 9's official Kickstarter page.

"While the beloved creations of my past are no longer at my disposal, the spirit they were born from still is. By tapping into that spirit, we can create a new game, and new characters, that carry on the legacy of the past," he continued.

While the game design might be rooted in the classics, Mighty No. 9 is aiming for a modernised visual treatment.

There is a clear desire from the Mighty No. 9 team, an all-star crew of former Capcom designers and artists, to bring these old action games into a modern context, and Inafune will no doubt want to bounce back after the unfortunate cancellation of Mega Man Universe, his last project before parting ways with Capcom.

And my word, how gamers at large have responded. In 2 weeks, more than $2 million has been donated by over 37,000 backers, easily doubling the campaign's original funding goal, and bringing the total just shy of the $2.2 million stretch goal that would bring the game to Wii U. Quite an impressive feat, when you consider that not a single second of footage nor even a screenshot from this early-in-development title has been shown.

What we do know about Mighty No. 9, though, hits a lot of the right notes, at least at a philosophical level. Fans clamouring for that specific kind of challenging, non-linear run-and-gun platformer haven't had much to be excited about since the retro-styled Mega Man 10, released on digital platforms in 2010. From the concept renders and artwork for Mighty No. 9, we can see a lot that harkens back to the NES and SNES Mega Man series, right down to the look of the main characters, Beck and Call (sound familiar?), as well as the design of the enemies and the Mighty Number boss robots.

Behold the earliest designs of Beck's transformation powers. My personal favorite of the bunch is Hammer Beck.

But to say that it's simply a Mega Man game without the Mega Man name, as some people have, would perhaps be too reductionist and a little unfair. Indeed, Inafune himself has been keen to downplay the similarities to the "Blue Bomber" and there are certainly some innovative ideas in the pipeline that shouldn't be ignored. Beck's ability to morph into different forms, such as a giant hammer, an extend-o-matic arm or a tank, opens up many possible gameplay opportunities. Furthermore, the Mighty Skills mechanic, which allows Beck to expend energy in exchange for temporary boosts, like a double jump or super speed, could potentially afford the player a level of decision making not seen in any Mega Man title.

Of course, Mighty No. 9 is a still a long way off. Who knows how these concepts will turn out in the final product, if they do show up at all? Nevertheless, it gives us plenty to look forward to ahead of the planned April 2015 release date, and with a Wii U version very nearly assured, we will definitely be following its progress with great anticipation.

The Kickstarter campaign for Mighty No. 9 will complete its funding period on October 1. Several stretch goals are lined up, including home console support, extra stages and new modes. For more information, click here.

TalkBack / Ubisoft Announces Child of Light for Wii U
« on: September 10, 2013, 06:44:34 AM »

A Japanese RPG from the Canadian division of a French games company... is your mind blown?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/35390

Artistic platformer/RPG, Child of Light, is coming to the Wii U eShop next year, Ubisoft announced during their recent Digital Day event.

Built on the same UbiArt Framework engine that powered Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends, Child of Light is a Japanese-style role-playing game in development at Ubisoft Montreal, under the helm of Far Cry 3 creative director Patrick Plourde. It is inspired by fairy tales and epic poetry, with all character dialogue in the game being spoken in rhyming patterns.

As Aurora, the player must retake the kingdom of Lemuria from the influence of the evil Black Queen, with the help of her guide Igniculus, who can be controlled by a second player. The game, which features an watercolor art style, includes puzzle-platforming elements and a turn-based Active Time Battle System akin to those seen in many classic Squaresoft RPG titles.

Child of Light is scheduled for release on Wii U, as well as other home consoles, in 2014.

Rayman Legends has sold more copies on Wii U than on any other platform since going on sale on August 30 in the UK, according to the latest Chart-Track figures.

The Wii U version reportedly accounted for about 45% of the retail sales of the limbless legend's latest platformer, which was formerly pegged as a Wii U exclusive until it was delayed earlier this year to enable multi-platform support.

By comparison, the Xbox 360 version made up 30% of the game's sales, whilst the PS3 edition took 24% and the PC version a meagre 1%. These statistics do not factor in the title's digital sales on any of the systems.

Overall, the opening week sales of Legends in the UK were around a 20% increase on the first-week sales of the previous entry in the series, Rayman Origins, which was released in late 2011.

Rayman Legends will launch across North America tomorrow, on September 3.

There's more than a hint of the Blue Bomber's DNA in this new project.

Mega Man co-creator Keiji Inafune has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund his new side-scrolling action game, Mighty No. 9, with a Wii U release possible if enough money is raised.

Heavily influenced by the Mega Man games of the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, Mighty No. 9 puts the player in the shoes of Beck, the 9th Mighty Number robot, as he runs and guns his way through several stages to reach his crazed Mighty No. compatriots, whom he must defeat in order to obtain their unique powers.

Where Mighty No. 9 differs from the series that inspired it is in Beck's ability to transform his body into different tools, such as giant magnets or a battle tank. He can also gain temporary power-ups by dispatching enemies in specific ways and storing up their "Xel" energy.

The Kickstarter campaign has already achieved its initial $900,000 target after just two days of funding. If $2.5 million is raised before the campaign's closure on October 1, the game, which is currently for PC only, will be brought to home consoles, including Wii U.

Mighty No. 9 is in the works at Inafune's independent studio, Comcept, under a veteran team of former Capcom developers, including Mega Man 1 and 2 level designer Naoya Tomita, Mega Man X3 and Legends art designer Shinsuke Komaki and original Mega Man composer Manami Matsumae.

The game is not expected to see release until spring 2015.
