Safe Words 16 - Next-Gen Edition
« on: October 01, 2020, 10:27:51 AM »

Welcome prospective consumers to Safe Words 16: Next-Gen Edition!
We’re in the middle of a brand-new global recession, and you know what that means – it’s the ideal time to launch new consoles! But since the poor old gaming industry, which only dwarfs all other commercial forms of entertainment combined, could really use some cash right now… We’ve decided to not just gauge our userbase with Five Hundred Dollars luxury machines (accessories excluded), we’re also going to sell them brand-new games (at a mark-up of course).

Rigourous budget cuts have been applied to QA Departments across the board to rush these products to market, so let’s hope none of these electronic entertainment products will Bomb at retail…!

The Rules
« Reply #1 on: October 01, 2020, 10:28:58 AM »
The rules: There’s a list of 12 games supposedly launching day & date with the next-gen consoles. This number is equal to the amount of players.
Players take turns in picking one of these game titles from the list. If they pick a Safe Word, that player secures a spot in the next round. If they pick the Bomb Word, that player is eliminated from the game. Once a title has Bombed it is eliminated from the pool.
Which of the game titles is the Bomb Word will be decided by whoever would be next up to pick a title. [EDIT: Last player in rotation gets to decide going forward, see here.] For the first round, the Bomb Word is decided by the player who is last in play rotation.

Turn order: The initial order has been decided by assigning players a number and throwing these in a random number generator.

Time limit: I’ll give players a generous 48 hours to decide which word to pick. Time limits are counted as of the timestamp on my last post.

Reminders: Players are encouraged to keep an eye on the thread to see when they’re up to choose. I will try to send reminders (per Forum PM) if 24 hours have elapsed without a choice occurring. If you prefer to be notified on Discord instead, let me know. If you need a time extension, let me know.

EDIT: Rules have been edited once to rectify a mistake caused by my wording. I apologise.

Well, Stratos, you're in luck! Your bot was the first one to sneak past Best Buy's empty basket error message. You're like a kid in a candy store, where do you spend your first 70 Dollars?

Your options are:
-   Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
-   Bugsnax
-   Demon’s Souls Remake
-   Destruction AllStars
-   Dirt 5
-   Gears Tactics
-   Godfall
-   Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
-   The Medium
-   Sackboy: A Big Adventure
-   Tetris Effect: Connected
-   Yakuza: Like A Dragon

Mr. Bungle has set the Bomb Word, Stratos is first to guess, the game is on!

Few things are as safe a multi-billion Dollar franchise! In Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales our hero fights against the Tinkerer who has been supplying super villains with gadgets ever since his introduction back in 1963. Looks like Sony will be delivering this gadget on time too, as Stratos moves on to round 2!

Next up: TOPHATANT123, which Next-Gen game will you be picking up on launch day?
Your options are:
-   Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
-   Bugsnax
-   Demon’s Souls Remake
-   Destruction AllStars
-   Dirt 5
-   Gears Tactics
-   Godfall

Next-gen? More like mah-jong! Finally we have enough teraflops to render turn-based combat, I thought we'd never see the day.
Tophatant123 is safe and moves on to round 2!

I think you're in a good spot. I'd rather be there. I'll be amazed if the first round were to go the distance. I actually think that nickmitch, myself and Mop it up are in the danger zone for the first round. If one us does pick the bomb word then you should be about the position Insanolord is right now in this round. Of course, if Insanolord or nickmitch were to pick the bomb word then I like my odds for the next round.

Fortnite was a success, Rocket League was a success. Both will launch day & date with the new systems for zero Dollars. So what could Sony do wrong by launching a new IP from the studio behind Goat Simulator taking inspiration from both on the same day, also including micro payments, but with an extra 70$ pricetag up front?!
That's what businessmen call a safe bet; Khushrenada lives to gamble another day.

A bold choice indeed, but not a wise one...
While attempting to demo the newest build of Godfall, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchfork takes to the stage of the Doritos Game Awards but unfortunately loads up the wrong USB drive. Yikes!
While the looter slasher (that is definitely not a live service game despite requiring a constant Internet connection) impresses visually, audiences never forget the fated stage presentation.

Godfall bombs at retail, taking Mop It Up with it on its way down.  :'(
Hope you'll still pop in to clown on the other players!

Seriously? Who chooses some random nothing game as the first choice?!

I guess there's a first time for everything, but I sure have had the worst luck the last few games. I guess one can't be on top (3) forever.

Also, shouldn't Khushrenada get the bomb word choice? Or have you changed the rules for this game?

I guess there's a first time for everything, but I sure have had the worst luck the last few games. I guess one can't be on top (3) forever.

Godfall looks like the most soulless game ever, too. Bummer to go out on that one, sorry. I mostly included it over more interesting projects because Gearbox are easy to make all kinds of jokes about. Didn't even get to my Colonial Marines comparison!

Also, shouldn't Khushrenada get the bomb word choice? Or have you changed the rules for this game?

Hmmm if that's how we used to do it I guess I did it wrong?
It's not explicitly mentioned in the Safe Words 15 rules, which I based this game on. I just made this assumption and nobody objected to the rules of this game (quoted below) which I'm certain everyone read studiously  ;).

I've already asked Pokepal for the next Bomb Word, and don't love the idea of changing rules mid-game. So  unless people feel this is a deeply unfair change somehow, I'm inclined to stick with it. Open to feedback on the subject though, I did not realise the rules here deviate from the norm. My apologies for this confusion.

For the first round, the Bomb Word is decided by the player who is last in play rotation.

Well, traditionally the last person in the rotation for a round would select it. With Pokepal being the one who should be next to select a Safe Word and thus be the first player in the next round then that would put me at the end. The argument for that order is that everyone is taking the same amount of turns selecting safe words and trying to avoid the bomb words. Now, it's possible that some people will have had to twice avoid selecting a bomb word while pokepal will have yet to do that action in this game. Further to that, why have the last player in this round, Mr. Bungle, select the bomb word instead of the first player, Stratos, in the rotation? You seem to set it up in this game to follow that old pattern.

However, you're the host and can do as you please. People host Mafia differently then I do and while I may have a preference on how rules are handled, I try to roll with the differences and work with it. And this wouldn't be the first game where the rotation is handled differently. Lucario did a game in which no one knew who'd be selecting next for awhile. So, you have precedence to tell everyone to back off and accept the rules have changed with Next Gen.

Also, sad to see you go Mop. (Should have been Insanolord!) I took look at the last game and you made it to 5th just shy of the Final Four but that was the mid-point of the game out of 9 players. That's not bad. 50/50 luck. Not sure what 14 was like.

I mentioned that you, me and nickmitch were in the danger zone this round for selecting the bomb word and sadly I was right. I was basing that thought from my experience hosting the game and where about it seems players often select the bomb word in a round but I've never done any study on the games played to see if there is a certain spot or average to say if that's true with any certainty.

Yeah honestly using that usual pattern makes more sense. My thinking on how I wrote the rules was this would lead to less repeated Bomb selections by the same players in the later rounds, but these rules hardly prevent that either.

Basically I goofed and didn't catch it, so I'd like to change back to the usual/previous format. But Pokepal would need to be cool with that too since I did already ask him, and changing now does rob him of an advantage. I'll PM him and will post here how we're continuing the game. Apologies for the confusion I caused.

EDIT: Regardless what happens, we revert to the usual rotation system ASAP. Either this round already, or at the start of next. Again my apologies.

Hahaha! You're the host. You don't need to wait for a player. You can just send a pm saying you sent the message to the wrong player and move on. I goofed in the last Mafia game by telling the Mafia they had collected the Metroid forgetting you had the ability to tie and capture it for yourself which you did. I didn't then tell you that I needed the Mafia's permission to correct the mistake. I gave you the Metroid and apologized to the mafia for getting their hopes up but there was another factor in play I forgot. It happens but in the end the correct ruling was made. Let me select a bomb word and keep this train in motion.  ;D

It is his first game but I never thought about that possibility. These remaining selections were pretty much all games I'd heard of. Godfall seemed to get mentioned a bunch on the NWR Discord after Ubisoft's summer video reveals so it didn't seem like a nothing game to me. That's why I was leary with all remaining choices since they had familiarity and I thought he might have chosen something with familiarity to himself as well.

It's very simple. I ask myself, if I was the person choosing the bomb word, what would I pick? Then I select that choice because the other person obviously isn't me and therefore won't have selected it. I just wasn't counting on the factor of the host working to sabotage me by taking away my divine right of selecting the next bomb word. ;) He acts like pokepal is the victim here but he's not. He's the benefactor of this mistake. I'm the victim.  >:(  :'(

Well, I admit, my interest in posting there and daily checking up on it has began to wane in the past month. (Who needs Discord when we have Discord.RSS posting here?) Problem is that even with posting a bit more on the forums of late, all the slow activity seems to have eroded most other regular member's checking in and posting as well. So, it is either stick with the slow burn of forum conversation here or hope to join in a flash fire conversation there that soon goes out and disappears. Looks like the real option for conversation these days is fast becoming letter writing. I just need to buy some stamps and I'll be set to go.

Also, it wasn't any advantage as Mr.Bungle revealed he selected Godfall from not knowing anything about it like you. So, the Discord bump had nothing to do with his selection.

1. The Bomb Word has been set by Pokepal.
2. BeautifulShy is first up to select.
3. Starting next round, the last player in rotation selects the Bomb Word again.
4. My apologies for the hold up over an error in the rules. Thanks for your patience everyone.

Hahaha! You're the host. You don't need to wait for a player. You can just send a pm saying you sent the message to the wrong player and move on. I goofed in the last Mafia game by telling the Mafia they had collected the Metroid forgetting you had the ability to tie and capture it for yourself which you did. I gave you the Metroid and apologized to the mafia for getting their hopes up but there was another factor in play I forgot. It happens but in the end the correct ruling was made. Let me select a bomb word and keep this train in motion.  ;D

These situations aren't entirely comparable though. In the Mafia case an already established rule was accidentally forgotten. Here, my rules gave Pokepal the right to choose, and I had already followed them by making him choose. I would not have deviated from this without Safe Word God Mop It Up pointing out the inadvertent rule change.

Thus it's my fault, not anyone else's.
I asked Pokepal if he would be willing to relinquish his turn, which would put him at a disadvantage. He chooses not to and both the rules and my implementation of them give him that right, so I will honour it.
I understand this puts you (Khush) at a mild disadvantage, but there's no way to resolve this without slighting either party. I apologise for causing this problem and going forward we'll be using the old rotation system again.

So what is going on now?

You get to choose! Here's the currently available options:

Is anyone up on their Norse mythology???   I would really want to visit Assassin's Creed Valhala's lands and enjoy them.

Sure coming right up:
Norse mythology is the body of myths of the North Germanic peoples, stemming from Norse paganism and continuing after the Christianization of Scandinavia, and into the Scandinavian folklore of the modern period. The northernmost extension of Germanic mythology, Norse mythology consists of tales of various deities, beings, and heroes derived from numerous sources from both before and after the pagan period, including medieval manuscripts, archaeological representations, and folk tradition.

The source texts mention numerous gods, such as the hammer-wielding, humanity-protecting thunder-god Thor, who relentlessly fights his foes; the one-eyed, raven-flanked god Odin, who craftily pursues knowledge throughout the worlds and bestowed among humanity the runic alphabet; the beautiful, seiðr-working, feathered cloak-clad goddess Freyja who rides to battle to choose among the slain; the vengeful, skiing goddess Skaði, who prefers the wolf howls of the winter mountains to the seashore; the powerful god Njörðr, who may calm both sea and fire and grant wealth and land; the god Freyr, whose weather and farming associations bring peace and pleasure to humanity; the goddess Iðunn, who keeps apples that grant eternal youthfulness; the mysterious god Heimdallr, who is born of nine mothers, can hear grass grow, has gold teeth, and possesses a resounding horn; the jötunn Loki, who brings tragedy to the gods by engineering the death of the goddess Frigg's beautiful son Baldr; and numerous other deities.

Most of the surviving mythology centres on the plights of the gods and their interaction with several other beings, such as humanity and the jötnar, beings who may be friends, lovers, foes or family members of the gods. The cosmos in Norse mythology consists of Nine Worlds that flank a central tree, Yggdrasil. Units of time and elements of the cosmology are personified as deities or beings. Various forms of a creation myth are recounted, where the world is created from the flesh of the primordial being Ymir, and the first two humans are Ask and Embla. These worlds are foretold to be reborn after the events of Ragnarök when an immense battle occurs between the gods and their enemies, and the world is enveloped in flames, only to be reborn anew. There the surviving gods will meet, and the land will be fertile and green, and two humans will repopulate the world.

Norse mythology has been the subject of scholarly discourse since the 17th century, when key texts attracted the attention of the intellectual circles of Europe. By way of comparative mythology and historical linguistics, scholars have identified elements of Germanic mythology reaching as far back as Proto-Indo-European mythology. During the modern period, the Romanticist Viking revival re-awoke an interest in the subject matter, and references to Norse mythology may now be found throughout modern popular culture. The myths have further been revived in a religious context among adherents of Germanic Neopaganism.

Central to accounts of Norse mythology are the plights of the gods and their interaction with various other beings, such as with the jötnar, who may be friends, lovers, foes, or family members of the gods. Numerous gods are mentioned in the source texts. As evidenced by records of personal names and place names, the most popular god among the Scandinavians during the Viking Age was Thor, who is portrayed as unrelentingly pursuing his foes, his mountain-crushing, thunderous hammer Mjölnir in hand. In the mythology, Thor lays waste to numerous jötnar who are foes to the gods or humanity, and is wed to the beautiful, golden-haired goddess Sif.

The god Odin is also frequently mentioned in surviving texts. One-eyed, wolf- and raven-flanked, with spear in hand, Odin pursues knowledge throughout the worlds. In an act of self-sacrifice, Odin is described as having hanged himself upside-down for nine days and nights on the cosmological tree Yggdrasil to gain knowledge of the runic alphabet, which he passed on to humanity, and is associated closely with death, wisdom, and poetry. Odin is portrayed as the ruler of Asgard, and leader of the Aesir. Odin's wife is the powerful goddess Frigg who can see the future but tells no one, and together they have a beloved son, Baldr. After a series of dreams had by Baldr of his impending death, his death is engineered by Loki, and Baldr thereafter resides in Hel, a realm ruled over by an entity of the same name.

Odin must share half of his share of the dead with a powerful goddess, Freyja. She is beautiful, sensual, wears a feathered cloak, and practices seiðr. She rides to battle to choose among the slain and brings her chosen to her afterlife field Fólkvangr. Freyja weeps for her missing husband Óðr, and seeks after him in faraway lands. Freyja's brother, the god Freyr, is also frequently mentioned in surviving texts, and in his association with the weather, royalty, human sexuality, and agriculture brings peace and pleasure to humanity. Deeply lovesick after catching sight of the beautiful jötunn Gerðr, Freyr seeks and wins her love, yet at the price of his future doom. Their father is the powerful god Njörðr. Njörðr is strongly associated with ships and seafaring, and so also wealth and prosperity. Freyja and Freyr's mother is Njörðr's sister (her name is unprovided in the source material). However, there is more information about his pairing with the skiing and hunting goddess Skaði. Their relationship is ill-fated, as Skaði cannot stand to be away from her beloved mountains, nor Njörðr from the seashore. Together, Freyja, Freyr, and Njörðr form a portion of gods known as the Vanir. While the Aesir and the Vanir retain distinct identification, they came together as the result of the Aesir–Vanir War.

While they receive less mention, numerous other gods and goddesses appear in the source material. (For a list of these deities, see List of Germanic deities.) Some of the gods heard less of include the apple-bearing goddess Iðunn and her husband, the skaldic god Bragi; the gold-toothed god Heimdallr, born of nine mothers; the ancient god Týr, who lost his right hand while binding the great wolf Fenrir; and the goddess Gefjon, who formed modern-day Zealand, Denmark.

Various beings outside of the gods are mentioned. Elves and dwarfs are commonly mentioned and appear to be connected, but their attributes are vague and the relation between the two is ambiguous. Elves are described as radiant and beautiful, whereas dwarfs often act as earthen smiths. A group of beings variously described as jötnar, thursar, and trolls (in English these are all often glossed as "giants") frequently appear. These beings may either aid, deter, or take their place among the gods. The norns, dísir, and aforementioned valkyries also receive frequent mention. While their functions and roles may overlap and differ, all are collective female beings associated with fate.

In Norse cosmology, all beings live in Nine Worlds that center around the cosmological tree Yggdrasil. The gods inhabit the heavenly realm of Asgard whereas humanity inhabits Midgard, a region in the center of the cosmos. Outside of the gods, humanity, and the jötnar, these Nine Worlds are inhabited by beings, such as elves and dwarfs. Travel between the worlds is frequently recounted in the myths, where the gods and other beings may interact directly with humanity. Numerous creatures live on Yggdrasil, such as the insulting messenger squirrel Ratatoskr and the perching hawk Veðrfölnir. The tree itself has three major roots, and at the base of one of these roots live a trio of norns, female entities associated with fate. Elements of the cosmos are personified, such as the Sun (Sól, a goddess), the Moon (Máni, a god), and Earth (Jörð, a goddess), as well as units of time, such as day (Dagr, a god) and night (Nótt, a jötunn).

The afterlife is a complex matter in Norse mythology. The dead may go to the murky realm of Hel—a realm ruled over by a female being of the same name, may be ferried away by valkyries to Odin's martial hall Valhalla, or may be chosen by the goddess Freyja to dwell in her field Fólkvangr. The goddess Rán may claim those that die at sea, and the goddess Gefjon is said to be attended by virgins upon their death. Texts also make reference to reincarnation. Time itself is presented between cyclic and linear, and some scholars have argued that cyclic time was the original format for the mythology. Various forms of a cosmological creation story are provided in Icelandic sources, and references to a future destruction and rebirth of the world—Ragnarok—are frequently mentioned in some texts.

According to the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda poem, Völuspá, the first human couple consisted of Ask and Embla; driftwood found by a trio of gods and imbued with life in the form of three gifts. After the cataclysm of Ragnarok, this process is mirrored in the survival of two humans from a wood; Líf and Lífþrasir. From this two humankind are foretold to repopulate the new and green earth.

Well, it's not so much that you said it as that you didn't deny it when I referred to you as one. Ergo, you do see yourself as one since that allusion seemed correct to you and did not require correction. It's just simple logic once you untwist it.

What is a Destructions AllStars? That one is a complete mystery to me.

Alas it's already taken, so I'll go with the next biggest mystery. Gears Tactics! I could have sworn, put a gun to my head I would say this game came out at least 2 years ago. Is it like Tomb Raider, where it's a same name different game kind of deal?

No need for guns to heads as this was a safe choice!
You're not far off by the way, the game already saw a PC release in the distant past of April this year, so that's basically two full years in 2020 terms.

Gears Tactics is, as you may have guessed, a Gears of War themed tactics/strategy game. Built by British studio Splash Damage, who usually build multiplayer modes for other games (Doom 3, Gears 4&5, one of the Batman games). The console port is launching day & date on the new Xbox, making it Technically Next-Gen.

Next up: Will Luigi Dude demonstrate a tactical masterstroke?

Thanks for playing, hope you'll stick around the bonfire while the other contestants take a relieved swig of their Estus Flasks.

What we need is a good game of Bomb Words, then everyone gets a bomb word! Actually, that gives me an idea for a new version of the game where everyone gets to pick a bomb word at once. Bit of a mass Russian Roulette situation. Maybe I should host a game.

Sackboy gets a late-stage title change when the unfortunate implications of its title are pointed out to Sumo Digital by MASB... The new title is... Safeboy! MASB is rewarded with a trip to the next round for their contributions to customer research.

Next up: Lolmonade, will they make a drink out of these lolmons?
-   Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla

Yeah could be fun! I briefly considered letting the dead people decide the Bomb Word for this game, since it's difficult to keep people engaged once they're out of the game unfortunately. But there's an element of strategy in faking people out when the same pool of words keeps getting re-used and slowly shrinks, maybe I'll try that after your game one day.

It's a volatile economy and with physical media on the decline this seemed like a sensible investment decision on paper. However, Khushrenada had mixed up his lessons on Boom and Bust economies... and inadvertedly invested during a Bomb economic climate! And worst of all, it was Insanolord's bomb word I lost to. Oh, the shame. If anyone needs me, I'll be sleeping in my car having sold my house to make up for some... less than stellar.. purchasing decisions.
I would say this is far more embarrassing than what happened to me.

Uhhhhh, I'm gonna say no.

This only happened because the host took away my right to choose a bomb word. That was the start of this domino chain leading to my ouster in a clearly orchestrated and elaborate conspiracy to stop me after I brilliantly dodged the first bomb word to gain control of the game. If I had been able to select the next round's bomb word then I'd have eliminated everyone else as I would have perfectly targeted them with my selections.

You chose the bomb word in the first round before the host meddled in my affairs so you've got no excuse unlike the one I have perfectly crafted.

And just wait until you see how the JFK assassination and Bermuda Triangle factor into the blatant fix this game has been to create a scenario where I could somehow lose to Insanolord. I mean, it's obvious such a thing could never happen without corrupt tampering and "coincidental" rule changing.

This just in, another rule change has been unanimously agreed upon by the Federation of Current Hosts (population: 1). To preserve continuity between Safe Words seasons, we'll be extending the F-Zero GX scoring system, with one exception: Khushrenada's points were tragically lost in the mail and we have no way of backing up his scores. As such, an estimate has been made to approximate Khush's previous points -- the FCH resets his score to minus one million bajillion points.

By applying a thick smokey eye look, Tophatant safely blends in with the vikings of Orkney and Shetland. Climbing another branch of YggdrasĂl, and coming ever closer to reaching Valhalla...

It's PlayStation versus Xbox in our decisive choice to end this round, how prophetic. The right choice sends Insanolord to Helheim, the wrong choice ends MASB's stay on Midgard. What'll it be, MASB?

Quarantine has Mr. Bungle feeling restless, and now he can't even blow off steam at depraved dance parties in dilapidated drug dens. What to do, what to do?

There's only one way to transcend this cooped up existence... Mr. Bungle drops a line and gets ready to stack lines simultaneously. He fires up Tetris Effect to become truly Connected to the universe. Stacking a perfect 12-line dodecatris, he feels validated in his choice and becomes eager, itching even, to make another choice soon... if only the next round were here already!

Remember kids, if you do drugs, at least do 'em safely!

The Bomb Word has been set, Top Four Time is here!
Let's take a quick look at our remaining contestants...

- MASB is our current Bomb setter, and our first of no less than two newcomers to make it to the Top Four! A dedicated player with previous winning experience in Mafia, their eyes are now trained on the Safe Words crown, and a top four position is already guaranteed. A star in the making...? We'll know very soon...

- TOPHATANT123 is the two-time champion, and our current incumbent coming hot off the win in Safe Words 15. With 6 prior games under their belt, TopHat's Antics are feared in the Safe Words major league. Rocking an impressive win ratio of no less than 33.3% so far, this is doubtlessly the veteran to beat. Will they extend their lead, or lose the crown to one of the upcoming talents...?

- Mr. Bungle is the other newcomer, storming the rankings and faking out veterans like it's nothing with well-placed Bomb Words. He may play the role of a bumbling newcomer picking the top of the list, but don't underestimate the obvious tactical prowess underneath this facade... Will he go all the way, or bungle a chance at a podium position...?

- BeautifulShy has already outperformed her previous outing, when she finished sixth in Safe Words 15. Two games of experience may not sound like much, but it's double what two of her rivals can bring to the table! This time around, with more players, and an unfortunate initial position low in the rotation, she's outlasting many players with more games under their belt. Can she secure an early podium spot? We'll find out right now, because BeautifulShy is first up to choose!

BeautifulShy's choice does not stack up well, and the Tetris gods deliver a T-piece instead of a line, ruining her progress. Disappointed, BShy informs all her friends not to buy the treacherous Tetris Effect: Connected, and the game is reviewbombed to high heavens.

Thanks for playing, congrats on a Top Four finish!

May this serve as a reminder to all that a 75% chance at success is by no means a safe one. Something to keep in mind the coming 2 weeks for no particular reason at all.

Wow! Thanks to MASB, TOPHATANT123 has got the best chance yet of being the first back to back Safe Words winner and be the first player to win 3 games. But, MASB is totally picking every one off right now. Can he complete the trifecta and eliminate TOPHATANT123?

Also, it is official. I've finalized the points for Seasons 1 and 2 of Safe Words. I've put them in Safe Words 15 in a post I edited so as not to bump the thread. Here's the info for those interested. You can click the quotation link to get to Safe Words 15 and see it in bigger text if the quote bubble is too small.

In order to not bump this thread and mess with the current game, I'm just going to put these totals here. After much debating as to what is fair, I've decided to go with 70 points for hosting. I was leaning towards 76 as though hosting would be the same as making the Final Four but decided to cut it back slightly to more 5th place finishing. It's still a high point total but I wanted to still have making the Final Four worth it just a bit more. So, if you want a quick 70 point boost to your totals then just host a game!

Giving the hosts points, though, actually changed things for Season 1 and put someone else on top. No, it wasn't me.  >:(

Season 1 Final All-Time Safe Words Leaderboard

1. Mop it up - 760 points (8 games played, 2 games hosted)
2. Stratos - 729 points (10 games played)
3. ShyGuy - 709 points (10 games played)
4. Soren - 673 points (10 games played)
5. Insanolord - 649 points (10 games played)
6. Khushrenada - 646 points (4 games played, 6 games hosted)
7. nickmitch - 635 points (9 games played)
8. Lucario - 539 points (7 games played)
9. Silenced - 506 points (6 games played, 1 game hosted)
10. Triforce Hermit - 500 points (6 games played, 1 game hosted)
11. UncleBob - 478 points (6 games played)
12. oohhboy - 372 points (6 games played)
13. lolmonade - 360 points (6 games played)
14. Nuclearspeed - 342 points (5 games played)
15. TOPHATANT123 - 293 points (4 games played)
16. ObbyDent - 180 points (3 games played)
17. Evan_B - 118 points (2 games played)
18. Spak-Spang - 116 points (2 games played)
19. Ceric - 100 points (1 game played)
20. (tie) Phil - 93 points (1 game played)
20. (tie) Pokepal148 - 93 points (1 game played)
22. (tie) BlackNMild2k1 - 76 points (1 game played)
22. (tie) Zap - 76 points (1 game played)
24. TofuFury - 58 points (1 game played)
25. ejamer - 47 points (1 game played)
26. Hypotheliciously - 41 points (1 game played)

Mop it up moves from 6th to first because of getting points for the two games she hosted. Sorry, Stratos. When looking at the point averages, Stratos was at 72.something over 10 games but Mop it up was at 77.something over 8 games. So, she was doing better than Stratos in averaging points per game. Thus, her getting further rewarded with getting points for hosting a game seemed fair rather than her being denied. It made me wonder if I was giving too many points for hosting but trying other point totals to lower things and create some perfect formula proved elusive. Even if I went with 60 points for a host, making it like finishing better than 9 but worse than 8 still would have Mop it up finish ahead of Stratos. With some games only having 8 players, it felt weird to give the host less points than anyone playing and immediately losing while they had to still do all the work of running the game. It goes back to Mop it up having a better average so let's put the points at 70. As well, Mop it up is only 1 of 2 people to host 2 games of Safe Words. Who might the other person be...?  ;)

Season 2 Final All-Time Safe Words Leaderboard

1. ShyGuy - 431 points (5 games played)
2. Insanolord - 399 points (5 games played)
3. nickmitch - 390 points (5 games played)
4. Khushrenada - 373 points (1 game played, 4 games hosted)
5. Mop it up - 362 points (5 games played)
6. Stratos - 357 points (5 games played)
7. Steefosaurus - 323 points (4 games played)
8. Lucario - 269 points (3 games played, 1 game hosted)
9. TOPHATANT123 - 249 points (3 games played)
10. BeautifulShy - 142 points (2 games played)
11. oohhboy - 130 points (2 games played)
12. Soren - 129 points (2 games played)
13. Fatty The Hutt - 93 points (1 game played)
14. TofuFury - 81 points (1 game played)
15. Silenced - 66 points (1 game played)
16. lolmonade - 58 points (1 game played)
17. Evan_B - 47 points (1 game played)

This tally comes from adding the points earned in Safe Words 15 to the points accumulated from players in Games 11 - 14 as well as adding in points for hosting.

Another reason why I'm happy enough with the 70 point total for hosting is for how Season 2 ended. This was a big test case in determining how weighted hosting should be since I hosted 4 out of the 5 games played. The one game I did play I ended up in 2nd. So, if I gave the host the same points as the 4th place finisher then I'd have "made the Final Four" or better as it were through the whole season. But I also knew that ShyGuy had a heck of a run during these 5 games as well and was very dominant. Would giving the host points take the Season 2 crown from ShyGuy? The answer is no. Even I had stuck with 76 points for hosting then my final position would have been 3rd place. Lowering the points for hosting to 70 just knocked me down to 4th. Because ShyGuy still placed better and had a sick 431 points acquired out of a possible 500, his average per game was still greater than my average for hosting. Trying to determine how many points a host should get based on this season, 70 points could seem low and maybe a host should get more if they'd still end up behind other players despite Final Four points. But based on a point differential between me and ShyGuy of 60 points at the time Season 2 ended, he'd have to tank two games for me to likely surpass him if I hosted those games depending on the amount of players and what the low finishing points might be. He could possibly regain the lead on the next game after if he placed high enough keeping things competitive. Thus, length of a season is another factor leading to how Mop it up's hosting points enabled her to keep up her average and surpass Stratos while ShyGuy could overcome mine by getting high finishes in a short sample size.

With that, I officially make 70 points the hosting bonus and conclude Game 15 and finally wrap up Season 1 and 2 of Safe Words. Onwards to Season 3.

Steefosaurus wanted to know some of this info and I figured you might be wondering about it too.

I had mentioned before that the length of a Season for Safe Words should be determined ahead of time so as to not suddenly be determined later on and seem as though one player may be getting favored treatment to win when another player was close in the accumulated points leaderboard. Therefore, I'll make the official announcement now that Season 3 of Safe Words will consist of 3 games. I'm basing this on the premise that I may have to yet host two more games to see us get to the end of a season. Unless some other people feel they'd be able to host a game within a year and a half, I'm going to keep the amount of games low so as not to have a bunch of games that need hosting later on.

Thanks for all the work Khush, and right on time too, as our Final Bomb Word has been set!

A single choice separates TOPHATANT123 from a third win, which would make it two in a row for them! But challenger MASB is on a killing streak, with two eliminations in a row. Will he make it a hat trick? It's the ultimate showdown between the sure bet and the underdog... Who will emerge victorious?!

TOPHATANT123, it's your move! Think carefully and please pick between:
- Dirt 5
- Sackboy: A Big Adventure

It would, but Tophat has a good 36 hours and change left to make a selection or request a time extension, so I'm sure that'll be plenty.

Nothing wrong with making MASB (and the audience!) nervously sweat a little before choosing. ;)

Khushrenada I salute your dedication to statistics and the Safe Words scoring system.

I must also take this opportunity at the end of the game, to commend one of the Wii U's best games, Super Mario 3D World. This game inspired many spin offs such as Captain Toad Treasure Tracker for Nintendo Wii U, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker for Nintendo 3DS, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker for Nintendo Switch, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure for PlayStation 5.

The key difference between Super Mario 3D World for Nintendo Wii U, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker for Nintendo Wii U, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker for Nintendo Switch, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury for Nintendo Switch (patent pending), Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker for Nintendo 3DS Family of Systems, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure for Sony PlayStation 5 (pending trademark dispute in the Republic of India) and Sony PlayStation 5: Digital Edition (pending trademark dispute in the Republic of India) is that Sackboy: A Big Adventure is releasing in the Knack 2013 slot... Meaning the game will indeed be the booooomb, but also that it's, well, the bomb. :(

MASB steals the crown and wins the Safe Words 16 Champion title!
Congratulations!

Dirt 5 would've been the Safe Word this round, proving once again how console wars are pointless since people only care about third party releases anyway. Maybe Sackboy should've settled for another racing game? I hear Sumo Digital are good at those.

This concludes Safe Words 16, the first of three games in Season 3! Since we're a trilogy this season, part 2 will be the dark and gritty sequel, so stay tuned.
THANKS FOR PLAYING EVERYONE!

Short recap:
A total of 23 Safe Words were chosen over 11 Rounds of playing. This seems comparatively low, mostly because 4 rounds were instantly ended by the first choice being the Bomb. One player was eliminated due to inactivity (just barely too, sorry Lolmonade), and one player stepped on their own Bomb (Insanolord).

The most often picked Safe choices were Bugsnax and Dirt 5, each sheltering 4 players, with the latter obviously being the safest out of all. By contrast, the least Safe choices were Spider-Man, Yakuza, Demon's Souls and The Medium all of which only helped a single player to safety. (This is discounting Godfall, which was the first Bomb and thus was never safe.)

Bomb-setting was very lopsided this time around, with MASB setting no less than FIVE Bomb Words on their path to victory. NWR_Insanolord and Mr. Bungle set two Bombs each. TOPHATANT123 and a contentious Pokepal148 Bomb round out the standings.
This effectively means more than half of all players never got to set a Bomb, and within that lower 50% bracket, 5 players never got to make more than 2 moves. It's kind of part & parcel for the game to lose people early, but it does make me wonder if a game where the outgoing player decides the Bomb would be fun. It would eliminate attempts to fake out fellow players, but it's worth considering.

Current Season 3 rankings:
12th. Mop It Up - 47 points (1 game played)
11th. Luigi Dude - 50 points (1 game played)
10th. Lolmonade - 54 points (1 game played)
09th. Nickmitch - 58 points (1 game played)
08th. Khushrenada - 62 points (1 game played)
07th. NWR_Insanolord - 66 points (1 game played)
Host. Discord.RSS - 70 points (0 games played, 1 hosted)
06th. Stratos - 71 points (1 game played)
05th. Pokepal148 - 76 points (1 game played)
04th. BeautifulShy - 81 points (1 game played)
03rd. Mr. Bungle - 87 points (1 game played)
02nd. TOPHATANT123 - 93 points (1 game played)
01st. MASB - 100 points (1 game played)

You can request a time extension?   How long of a time extension?

I didn't really set an exact time for it, but it's there in the rules (see bolding below).
My thinking was mostly just if I send a 24 hours remaining reminder and people need more time to deal with personal stuff or whatever, but didn't want to quit the game, it's an option.
Nobody requested an extension, and in some sense it's probably a pointless addition since sending a PM to ask for more time is probably more time consuming than just quickly making a random choice to move the game along.
But eh, these forum games are mostly fun for the social aspect imo, not so much the competitive element. So I try to keep people on board, rather than losing players to inactivity. Seeing Lolmonade post within like an hour of their elimination was a bummer imo, that's the kind of stuff I was hoping to avoid.

Thanks to Steefosaurus (don't know if Discord is a temporary name or not) for all his work during this game. Half the fun was reading his descriptions of the safe/bomb selections.

Since there was a conspiracy to keep Khush from selecting bomb words, perhaps the Safe Words gods sprinkled their fairy dust on me instead.

So much suspense. So much time trying to decide on the right bomb words. Almost as involving as a Mafia game for me!

Thanks to Khushrenada for his entertaining posts.

And thanks to BeautifulShy for rooting for me!

And to everyone else for making the game exciting. WIsh I had known about/joined these games earlier, but I'll be a participant from now on.

Yes, for the most part, I hate eliminating a player from inactivity. I'd much rather have the players decide their fate. However, when a player constantly takes a couple days to make their selections then I sometimes start hoping they'll just get eliminated from inactivity so we can keep things moving at a more steady pace. :evil;

However, congratulations and job well done Steefosaurus Discord.RSS. You've finally earned the love of the people with your hosting job, Discord.RSS!! There definitely is. Just look at the start of Safe Words 5 where I was again denied a bomb word because I understood the proper selection order unlike Pokepal148 this game.....

Thanks to Khushrenada for his entertaining posts.

I know from hosting that there can be a lot of dead time waiting in these games unlike Mafia where there can be a lot of private conversations and trying to examine behaviors even though not much is actually being posted. Thus, I wanted to interject and find things to riff around on while I could this game to help keep things lively. Adds some flavor to the game like role-playing can do in Mafia. Did it less once eliminated so as not to take away too much spotlight from the survivors.
