General Gaming / Microsoft trying hard to attract Japanese gamers
« on: May 25, 2004, 12:35:36 PM »
According to GamesIndustry.biz M$ is starting a new television show in Japan that showcases nothing but the Xbox and Xbox LIVE enabled gamed hosted by a popular Japnese Porn Star

Latest effort to make Japan love the Xbox hits the airwaves

After price cuts, special edition packs, software bundles and even "hugging pillows" featuring Kasumi from Dead or Alive, the latest attempt to make Japanese gamers interested in Microsoft's Xbox has emerged - a satellite TV show dedicated to the console, co-hosted by a soft porn starlet.

What better way to get people to buy an X-box to play Halo than to release a version of it that is gonna make you want the console version even more? By releasing it on the most widely spread and popular handheld around?

If they can make a very fun portable version of Halo that gets me hooked and wanting more, I would more likely be inclined to purchase an X-Box to play Halo among other X-box games that I wasn't willing to purchace an X-box for.

And besides they could use the handheld experience. I'm sure they don't want to garner that experiece on a Sony handheld, and it would be way too risky to make one of their own right now.  If Microsoft can help Nintendo cripple Sony in the handheld department that would definately put a chink in Sony armor and a hole in their pocket, along with a bad taste in some 3rd parties mouths. That would also leave a hole for M$ to slide into the handheld market on their own in the future, while keeping xtra market share away from Sony.

well whatever

the DS plays GBA games so technically you will be able to play HALO on the DS

now what mr. smarty pants

I like the look of the top screen being wide screen, it looks like alot better use of all the wasted space on either side of the top screen.

Now all it needs is a place to hold the stylus, which i think should be right where the screens fold, and an analog stick for precision control.

My post wasn't so much about Team Ninja support as it was about the Tomonobu Itagaki quote from his interview.  It just proves how perverted the guys at Team ninja really are (as if we didn't already know ).

Theoretically if you think about it, the 'portable console' could have wireless 4 player controller support ie.  Bluetooth Wavebird.

You buy the system as a stand alone handheld w/ a tv-out option then you buy 4 seperate wireless controllers all on different switchable frequencies.  Hook it up to the TV, sit back and relax just as if it was a regular console.  But of course you're also gonna need some kind of AC/DC in to power the unit, something small like the plug for a nokia phone.

As far as sound goes, well you could use the standard headphone jack for basic stereo/mono output and I'm sure they could modify that same port to support 5.1 - 7.1 sound if need be.

I can picture it already, the future is 'The Handheld Console' !!

I don't know if any of you watch G4TV (soon to be G4TechTV), but this is a paraphrased quote off of their interview on PULSE with Tomonobu Itagaki - creator of the DOA series:
" We will definately be supporting the DS, but as far as the touch screen goes, you may want to think about DOA Beach Volley Ball, because you can touch the girls.

So I guess you can count Team Ninja in onto the DS developer list, and sleep well knowing that all Nintendo fans may get their share of the over glorified T & A that is DOA and Beach Volleyball also!!

P.S. it has been rumored that RARE is also supporting the DS just as they have been supporting the GBA.
they have the development kits, but M$ denies support of DS, just the SP.

P.S.S. Here on the Nintendojo Forum I read  that M$ may be having other game studio's support the cash cow that will be the DS with such studio's as 'Bungie' with their ever popular HALO. - Quartermain's rumor report from EGM mag.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:The name of Nintendo's next generation console
« on: May 16, 2004, 09:20:08 PM »
Don't forget that Nintendo DS wasn't the original 'codename' for this handheld, that would have actually been "Nitro' if you remember the leaked outdated specs sheet.

But if they were to change the name I wouldn't be surprised if it was renamed to the GameBoy DS, just to stick with the gameboy name and all but guarantee itself about 20 million units sold.

apparently two people broke the display case for the PS2, hit eject and stole the disk playing the MGS3 one level demo.  They then hightailed it out of the convention center and no one was able to stop them!!

in their invite only area,
according to Shogmaster over at Beyond3D Forums

Quote

Unforunately, I did not see it personally, but my good friend I went to the show with did. He was asking for a certain poster and they took him into the invite only area to get it for him. He followed in. And there, he saw a miniature XBox (about 1/3 the size of the current version), running Jade Emprie demo. It had the DVD drive in the middle of the face instead of the left side, and still had 4 ports, and styling resembled the current one. It looked "ready to be put on the shelf" according to him. They rushed him and his friends back out with the poster, but he was absolutely positive about what he saw.

Later We were at the Tecmo booth talking to a marketing honcho we know there and we mentioned it to him and his reaction was "we didn't get our's yet!" instead of "really! I didn't know such thing existed". Apprently he was already expecting theirs.

You really think Microsoft is gonna release a new, sleeker, slimmer, smaller version of the Xbox, and not mention it at all?  I know quite a few people that might buy an xbox at the right price if they(me included), had room for one.
And this might boost their sales in Japan also, since their biggest complaint besides being an American product is that the Xbox is just too big.

I also heard prior to E3 that Sony was supposed to reveal the PSTwo.  Has anyone heard anything about it?

SEGA R&D @ Beyond3D forums says

Sega to launch new handheld device.

E3 2004 will surely be remembered as the year of the portable gaming device. With Sony's PSP announcement and Nintendo's DS unveiling, this year's show has already had more than its fair share of portable goodness - but Sega's shock revelation that it is developing its own device must top the lot.

However, according to Yuji Naka, who unveiled the machine to shocked games industry representatives at a Sega E3 press briefing held just half an hour ago, with their new creation (code-named 'Prometheus') Sega are not attempting to directly compete with either Sony or Nintendo. 'Prometheus' is instead being billed by Sega as "the videogame equivalent of the iPod", and with the machine's pearl-white colour scheme it is obvious to see that the company wish to invoke the design-chic of Steve Jobs' ultra-popular music-playing machine. The similarities do not end there, however: rather than purchasing games from their local GameStop, gamers will download 'Prometheus' titles (called 'gamebits') from a special Sega online service which, Sega said, will operate in a similar way to Apple's iTunes software. With the use of a supplied USB cable (also white) users may then transfer up to twenty 'gamebits' on to their 'Prometheus' system's 15GB hard drive for play any time, any place.

The 'Prometheus' is roughly the same width as a CD case, and half the height. It will operate on a rechargeable battery (as yet unconfirmed as being lithium) which Sega say will last up to twenty hours. In a surprising move, in order to conserve battery power, the 'Prometheus' screen will not be backlit: a decision which we believe likely to alienate many gamers, and one inexplicable in lieu of recent technological developments which should negate such problems. Nevertheless, with the power, according to Sega, of "the Dreamcast, plus a little extra", and a genuinely innovative and cost-effective approach to game distribution, the 'Prometheus' certainly shows promise - and if the jubilant cheers and applause from the assembled journos are anything to go by, Sega's return to hardware is more than welcome.

Expect more tomorrow at the official Sega press conference where we hope to see at least footage of several potential launch titles.
