Say, for example, I do something that a mod or admin doesn't like. He reprimands me, bans me, closes a thread, makes a decision I don't like, etc. Should he be fair enough to at least allow me to defend myself, or explain myself? What Insanolord just said reminds me a lot of a tyrannical mod on another forum (azeke knows what I'm talking about) that did not end well for me. I know it's a rivate forum ran by you guys, but shouldn't you be fair -- to a point?

Pretty sure you can PM mods to get all the explanations you can eat if the situation isn't clear.  Reading forum lawyer posts is like watching a sad clown dance, so please PM if you don't want to look like a sad clown.

PMing mods doesnt always work though, sometimes you essentially get "forum rules say we can edit posts for no reason, so drop it".

I like to think we're pretty lenient about allowing folks to "defend" themselves.  There are multiple moderators you can go to (and when I correspond with someone regarding a moderation, I usually try to copy one or more of them so if I'm out of line, they can say something).  There's also the feedback forum.

However, there comes a point where there is no explanation.  If someone posted several replies all over talkback with photos of naked people, then no, that person doesn't get to defend themself when the ban hammer comes down.

Likewise, if someone is publicly reprimanded for something, they do it again, and have to specifically be told *not* to do it a third time - that person doesn't really help their case.

I think all moderators have their PMs turned on, so if someone really wants to take issue with the moderation, they should PM the moderator (or post in a less aggressive manner on Feedback) what the issue is.

Although, in TJ's defense, I'd be interested in reading the original article posted by the individual in question.  I'm curious if his summation of the situation is in anyway founded in reality or if it's 100% fantasy.

Look, don't freak out about editing posts. We do it for 1 of two reasons.


1. For laughs. We're here to have fun and it's not like we can silently edit posts (anymore). Sometimes editing a post gives joke potential.


2. There's something in the post that shouldn't be there.


In tonight's case it was explained, and in my experience if we are editing for REAL reasons (not for laffos) we explain why. I mean, why wouldn't we? We obviously don't want the poster to do it again, so it is in our interest to explain.


If you want to know you can ask. You can ask publicly. I don't care.


The vast majority of edits are in camp 1.


In terms of general moderation just follow the rule: don't be a jerk. Do that and you wont have any problems. We're pretty lax, but being a jerk makes it less fun for everyone so we don't want that. Jerks lead to other jerks. And that sucks.

You have to annoy someone who's more powerful than me enough.  I don't give permanent bans, as I like to think most everyone has some good qualities to them.  Except for Spambots.
Worst case, I might temp ban someone and send it to one of the overlords and ask their opinion on making it permanent... but I've never considered that.
