Nintendo Gaming / What will Nintendo release in 2022?
« on: January 01, 2022, 01:48:18 PM »
Welcome to the 2022 predictions thread, where you can win points and eternal glory!
How it works: please post 1-10 Nintendo related things you think will occur this year, that's it!

I will try to update this thread with all the major Nintendo releases of the year, just like last year.
Barring unforeseen catastrophe (very unlikely in today's world!) we can then once again tally everyone’s points by the end so we can discover who the true Futurologist of our board is.

You can predict anything you want in this thread (please don’t manifest another plague though), but if you wanna COMPETE for those highly desirable POINTS, please humor me and follow these Rules/suggestions:
  • You may submit between 1 and 10 predictions for the year.
  • If you can write your predictions in numbered list/bullet point format that’d be helpful, but it's not required.
  • You get 1 point for being right, half a point for being half-right.
  • No points for guessing stuff we already know! See what we already know… below the line!
  • You have until the first Direct of the year (February 9th) to submit predictions. Obviously we can continue speculation afterwards, but I don’t wanna go through every post again to assign meaningless VERY VALUABLE points.

Welcome prospective consumers to Safe Words 16: Next-Gen Edition!
We’re in the middle of a brand-new global recession, and you know what that means – it’s the ideal time to launch new consoles! But since the poor old gaming industry, which only dwarfs all other commercial forms of entertainment combined, could really use some cash right now… We’ve decided to not just gauge our userbase with Five Hundred Dollars luxury machines (accessories excluded), we’re also going to sell them brand-new games (at a mark-up of course).

Rigourous budget cuts have been applied to QA Departments across the board to rush these products to market, so let’s hope none of these electronic entertainment products will Bomb at retail…!

NWR Feedback / Missing Talkback
« on: June 19, 2020, 12:20:15 PM »
Looks like the Talkback for the Railway Empire review didn't load in properly. I don't know if it's a whole lot of work to add one, and I guess I'll live without a place to talk about trains, but figured it'd be worth mentioning.

Here's my dumb predictions:
- Nintendo finally launches their sleep sensor for Pokémon Sleep. It's a Bluetooth device that counts snores.
- Ring Fit Adventure will get a big expansion pass. Maybe it's a sequel with a different exercise device.
- Super Mario Party 2 comes out. The last one sold close to EIGHT MILLION copies.
- Super Mario Maker 2 gets another big content update centered around a Nintendo character. (DK? Wario? WALUIGI AT LAST?)
- A new Nintendo project by Ubisoft Milan & Paris is announced, but won't release until 2021.
- Splatoon: Paint Bucket (spin-off). It's a drawing tool made by the Art Academy studio, to tap into Splatoon's artsy fanbase.
- Captain Toad 2 comes out. They've had a team porting this game twice in 2018, and added DLC to it in February last year. I think those people have been building levels ever since and a sequel releases this year.[/list]

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia 83: F-Zero Strapped for Crash! [PODIUM CEREMONY]
« on: December 22, 2019, 10:52:15 AM »
Story
Well, that didn't take long! Granted, Phantom Road is a tricky circuit with lots of unguarded corners to be pushed off... Long-standing F-Zero bandit Samurai Goroh took a tumble straight down the very first chicane, after tripping over a randomly generated banana peel...

MAFIA VICTORY!
That Baby Guy and Mop It Up suffered an early setback and even had to ruthlessly sacrifice a fellow Mafia Member to clinch it, but in the end they steamrolled over the competition! Congratulations!

Here's who everyone was:
1. Pokepal148 was Townie Detective. Escaped death twice, killed during Night 5.
2. Khushrenada was Townie Cupid, and joined Stratos & Stevey on his first night. Served as Race Leader for a while, too. Killed on Night 3 by Mafia.
3. BeautifulShy was the Risky Driver and kept the Race Leader title firmly in the Townie camp. She was killed on Night 1, took a lucky guess, and resurrected Pokepal from death while going out.
4. Lolmonade was the Townie Doctor.
5. MASB was Mafia Goon #3, killed by the very first Townie Vote.
6. Nickmitch was a Normal Townie, the last one to perish on Day 7.
7. NRW_Insanolord was the Rogue Mafia Goon, but never used this power. Killed on Night 5 through Townie Vote.
8. Stevey started as Normal Townie, was hit by Cupid's Arrow. Died when voted out.
9. Stratos  started as Normal Townie, was hit by Cupid's Arrow. Died when voted out.
10. Mr. Bungle was a Normal Townie, killed by Mafia hit on Night 6.
11. Shyguy was a Normal Townie, voted out on Day 2.
12. Mop It Up was Mafia Goon #2 and survives to this day!
13. Backwards Flying Dragons was the Mafia Godfather & survives to this day!
14. Lucario was the Killer. Voted out on Day 3.

Thanks for playing everyone!

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia 83: F-Zero Strapped for Crash! [DAY 7]
« on: December 22, 2019, 10:12:16 AM »
Story
Even phoenixes aren't guaranteed eternal life, so we learned today. The season's late arrival had been under fire continually, but what sealed the deal was being bumped off-track by a monkey in a spherical object while the track kept randomly generating new corners under their very noses. Highly peculiar.
Elsewhere, Silver Neelsen, F-Zero's longest-sitting veteran driver, was sneakily hit in a spin by shadowy figures. Some say, he's still spinning to this day...

Story
Wowzers, this Season has so many twists the Empyrean Colony's Twist Plate pales in comparison! It appears the Federation Internationale de Voiture Volente should reconsider its rulebook, because we've got a real Death Race on our hand!
The ever so innocent James McCloud, the poor hard-working mercenary from the Lylat System, was forced off the track by no less than 3 of his colleagues. A particularly cruel move, given his recent engagement to long-term bad boy of motorsports, the Black Shadow. Only yesterday were they quoted in an interview with Autospace Weekly on how they intended to use the F-Zero prize money to settle down and decorate a shared flat with IKEA furniture...
Elsewhere on track, other dirtbaggery occurred, when The Closest Thing To An F-Zero Experience was just protecting a fellow race driver, and booted out of the race for it. I guess we'll chalk this one up as a... WipEout!

It feels like this season might crawl to a conclusion soon, if the dirty hoverstreet race tactics aren't abandoned. I guess we'll find out how terminal things are, in Trident's Cosmo Terminal!

Tonight's Events:
- Lolmonade was killed by the Mafia. Lolmonade was the Townie Doctor.
- Stratoswas killed by Vote. Stratos was a Normal Townie, and part of the Couple.

If 1 dies, the other does too. A couple must be established before Day 2 starts. Cupid becomes a Normal Townie afterwards.

3rd Party Roles:
Killer: Can kill 1 player per night. This player can only win if they're the last player standing.

Story
As we leave behind the Earth's captial, Mute City, we look back on a blistering Grand Prix. The poor delivery driver representing Team Space Fedex already cheated death once, and does so once more with help from a kind stranger who must have trained with Mutant City resident Dr. Stewart!
This time though, the assailant was unmasked by the rest of the pack and pushed off track. Onlookers attest to having heard the Killer shout "awww, everybody cheating!" as he crashed out of the race.
Elsewhere on track, while everyone was fixated on the commotion, the Race Leader was quietly ambushed in the pit lane and shipped off in a crate to Paramount Pictures. No doubt awaiting a fate worse than death...

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia 83: F-Zero Strapped for Crash! [DAY 2]
« on: December 09, 2019, 12:07:19 PM »
Story
Oof what a first round! Mr. Zero knew he signed up for a corker when he signed that very lucrative new F-Zero Sportscaster contract, but little did he know this one would be less predictable than a randomly generated X Cup track layout!
No less than three drivers were forced off track, but a particularly risky move from Race Leader Jody Summer bumped the Mighty Hurricane back on track through a miraculous move of physics-defying action!
Meanwhile, two drivers have ditched their cars for a single two-driver vehicle, and a fly-by-night new racing team pushed a brand new driver onto the track who will start the next race from the pitlane with a significant grid penalty! Amidst the chaos, Sonic the Hedgehog snatches pole position from everyone. Onlookers report he could be heard shouting "you're too slow!" while passing a few backmarkers.
Next up, we the racing action heats up as F-Zero moves to the Fire Field - Cylinder Knot!

Tonight's Events:
- MASB was killed by Townie Vote (by way of Race Leader Tiebreaker). MASB was Mafia Goon #3.
- BeautifulShy was killed by Killer hit. BeautifulShy was the Risky Driver.
- Pokepal148 was killed by Mafia hit. Pokepal was the Townie Detective.
- Pokepal148 was revived by the Risky Driver. They enjoy a one-day protection, so they cannot be voted out or killed tonight.
- Khushrenada was appointed the new Race Leader by the previous Race Leader.
- Love is in the Aero Dive! Cupid's Arrows struck a new proverbial King Arrow & Mrs. Arrow. A new couple was formed! Their objective is now to survive until the end together. If one dies, the other will too.
- A new player joins the race from the back of the grid, see below!

New driver joins the race!
ThePerm is a late arrival! Since they are late in a AA-battery powered Bumper Car, their role is announced to everyone: ThePerm is a Normal Townie with a one-time Boost item.
The Boost allows a one-time escape from a Mafia or Killer hit. ThePerm will need to use the Boost on their own accord; it does not activate automatically, nor will they be told if the Mafia or Killer have a hit planned on them. The Boost does not protect against being voted out.

Special roles
Mafia roles:
Mafia #1: Mafia boss. Shows up as townie when investigated by Detective
Mafia #2: Mafia goon. 50% Chance to inherit a mafia special ability.
Mafia #3: Mafia goon. 50% Chance to inherit a mafia special ability.

With Thanksgiving behind us and a whole lot of cheap new devices to buy today, I'm sure everyone's got 5 seconds to sign up for the newest Forum Mafia game while they're waiting on updates for something!

This'll hopefully be a nice, easy to understand game you can just casually check into on your phone every day or two. I'm hoping that way people can still join even if their time is limited, or perhaps if they've not played Mafia before.

Rules
Forum Mafia is a social game consisting of 2 phases: first there is Daytime, when discussion is open and players can discuss strategy, theories, etc. This is followed by Nighttime, during which the Mafia tries to eliminate players from the game, and various other actions may occur in secret.
Players are randomly assigned roles, splitting them into several factions.
A small minority of players secretly constitute the Mafia: they remove 1 player from the game at a time, with the goal of being the only survivors left. Deception is their core asset. The majority of players will be so-called Townies, and it is their goal to survive this sabotage from within, by removing suspected Mafia members through a majority vote. Cooperation will aid them most. Lastly, some members of the group may have a tertiary objective that applies only to them; these are called third-party players. Staying incognito is crucial for their success.

Story
It's F-Zero baby! A fast-paced anti-gravity racing event which attracts thrill-seeking pilots. Some drivers seek the glory of lifting the coveted cup at the end, whilst others prefer to knock rivals off the track. Can the legitimate racers stave off the challenge of saboteurs and claim a podium position, or will the crash-causers end the race prematurely? Sign up to find out!

Role Playing?

GamesCom is on this week. To be honest I don't know too much about this show, but Nintendo and Microsoft are both there to show games, and Google Stadia is there too.

Note: Indie World isn't exactly a new name. In Japan this name was used for the Indie Highlights/Indie Directs of the past.

Anyway on to the games announced:
-Risk of Rain 2 Roguelike, solo & squads, loots. Out this Summer from Hopoo Games & Gearbox.
-Eastward real-time combat, overhead adventure game. Earthbound vibes. Pixpil & Chucklefish. 2020.
-Freedom Finger 2 horizontal shooter. Cartoony. Music from Com Truise & more. Fall 2019.
-Röki gorgeous adventure game. Snowy landscapes & giant wolves. Love the aesthetic. Winter 2019.
-Torchlight II hack & slash game, get loot. Isometric view. Is this a Diablo clone? (Idk.) Panic Button is doing the port. Out September 3rd 2019.
-Skater XL Ragdoll animations look bad, but hey when there's no Skate 4/Tony Hawk??? Out 2020.
-Youropa gravity-defying 3D puzzle game. Reminds me of The Bridge, but in 3D. Winter 2019.
-SUPERHOT "the most innovative shooter in years". Time only moves when you move. Out today!
-Dungeon Defenders: Awakened multiplayer tower defence. Timed console exclusive, Feb 2020.
-The Touryst 3D puzzle platformer, new game from Shin'en! Very different, voxel-based artstyle. Love the lighting effects. Includes an in-game arcade which plays FAST Racing? November 2019.
-Skellboy  action game. Play as a skeleton, swap out bodyparts. December 3rd 2019.
-EarthNight 2D , Sonic-esque platformer on top of dragons. Something about how they've cut the trailer gives me a headache. Art style is unique though, like how the dragons look. Out this year.
-Hotline Miami Collection top down neon style action games from Dennaton/Devolver Digital. Out today!

Highlights reel:
-Blasphemous 2D action game. Ninja Gaiden x Castlevania? Out September 26th 2019.
-Close to the Sun first person... horror? Puzzle? Not sure. Out this year.
-Cat Quest II cartoony action rpg with cats! Fall 2019.
-Spiritfarer 2D game from the Jotun developers. Handdrawn art again looks like. Spring 2020.
-Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince puzzle platformer, well-known series. October 8th 2019.
-Creature in the Well stylish overhead action game. Think Furi on PS4. September 6th 2019.
-One Finger Death Punch 2 side-view brawler with stick figures. December 2nd 2019.
-Best Friend Forever take care of a shiba dog! February 14th 2020, perfect for Valentine's.
-Phogs! trippy puzzler. Basically Catdog, but it's 2 dogs instead. Assume chaotic co-op? Early 2020.
-What the Golf? what if you could launch everything like golf balls? Winter 2019.
-Kine spatial puzzle game, looking stylish! Out 2019.
-Hypercharge: Unboxed 1st person shooter with toy soldiers. Fun perspective? Winter 2019.
-Northgard action/strategy game? Hard to tell in this short time. Out November 26th 2019.
-Sparklite topdown Zelda ish gameplay, more action-oriented. Nice pixel art. Fall 2019.
-Munchkin: Quaked Quest action/rpg/dungeon crawler with cards. Presume co-op too? Fall 2019.

"One more thing":
-Ori and the Blind Forest - Definitive Edition gorgeous Metroid style game from Moon Studios, former Microsoft exclusive. Out September 27th 2019.

Not show today:
Hollow Knight: Silksong, Shovel Knight: King of Cards/Shovel Knight Showdown, Untitled Goose Game (we riot).

TL;DR: I'd figure the highlights for most people would be: Ori and the Blind Forest, SUPERHOT, Hotline Miami Collection, Risk of Rain 2, and The Touryst.
Personally I'm interested in seeing more from Eastward, Spiritfarer, Freedom Finger 2, Röki, and Creature In The Well.

Video of the whole show is here.

EDIT - Further announcements made for Switch elsewhere at/adjacent to GamesCom:
-Streets of Rage 4 confirmed to come to Switch in lead-up to GamesCom.
-Little Nightmares II announced during the Opening Night event.
-The Witcher III: Wild Hunt now has a release date on Switch, October 15th 2019. Some of the NPC models are seriously downgraded to basically GameCube levels of fidelity.
-Darksiders Genesis showed some more gameplay for the Diablo-esque prequel.
-Windjammers 2 pushed back to 2020.
-Remothered: Broken Porcelain 2020 horror game. Sequel to Remothered: Tormented Fathers.
-Port Royale 4 is the new pirate/merchant RTS from Kalypso, who also make the Tropico games. Out 2020 on all major platforms, including Switch.
-GRID Autosport to release in September 2019. Digital for now. 30 or 60 fps selectable.

Figured I'd lift the discussion on this one out of the E3 2019 thread, hopefully this is more convenient.

So Konami is smelling that sweet, sweet PlayStation Mini money and is repackaging a bunch of TG-16/PC Engine/SuperGrafx games into a mini console of their own. 52 unique games are included (57 if you count duplicates), one controller, savestates, it includes a HDMI cable, optional scanline filter, is USB powered - the usual mini console stuff.

1. Console background
In Japan the PC Engine was a fairly successful home console from NEC, which competed with the Sega MegaDrive/Genesis, SNES, and I guess the Neo Geo (did they even get the Philips CD-i?). In North America, it was released as the TurboGrafx-16 (to pretend it was 16-bit compared to the NES' 8-bit I suppose, even though TG-16 was an 8-bit system - it just had a 16-bit GPU). In Europe it never really saw a wide release I think, perhaps some key markets only (U.K.?).
Games were released on HuCards, small credit card sized carriers with exposed pins.
NEC and Hudson Soft worked on the PC Engine/TG-16 together, so with Konami owning Hudson, they're now the ones capitalising on that 1989 nostalgia.

2. More history: Add-ons & successor
Of course the fourth console generation was littered with add-ons. Sega CD, SNES SatellaView, and the Super Game Boy are all examples. Naturally PC Engine/TG-16 needed an add-on of their own, so they brought out several disc attachments. This allowed for animated cut-scenes and actual recorded dialogue to be added into games, amongst others. Fun fact, one of the disc formats was called Super CD-ROM², pronounced "CD-Rom-Rom" (seriously).
Later the CD drives were incorporated into the main unit, this combo-device was called the TurboDuo in North America. To make matters even more confusing, the PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 also saw a successor, the SuperGrafx, which was backwards compatible for all HuCard games and all CD/Super CD-ROM² games through the add-ons. SuperGrafx itself was a massive flop however; it was rushed to market, made only modest changes over the original TurboGrafx, and only saw 6 actual games produced for the system.

3. Mini consoles
Unique about Konami's new mini consoles is the fact they're producing different regional variants, despite near-identical software libraries (unlike NES/SNES/PlayStation mini, which all had different games in certain regions).
Annoyingly the original consoles had just 1 controller port, you needed a multitap (Turbotap) to connect up to 5 players. The mini consoles fix this, by adding a second USB controller port. Multitaps will be released too.

Left to right:
-Europe: PC Engine CoreGrafx mini (CoreGrafx was a different PC Engine model, with A/V out instead of RF).
-Japan: PC Engine mini (note the absence of turboswitches on this controller!)
-Americas: TurboGrafx-16 mini

4. Games
In this section I'll cover all the games with a brief mention of what they are.
Weirdly, since all 3 regions share a near identical line-up of included games, many included on American/European systems will just be in Japanese without English translation. I've split them up by language, the ones that might be difficult without knowing Japanese are marked as such.

Note: The Japanese model includes two games that won't be on the Western models, Tokimeki Memorial, which I believe is either a dating sim or about gossiping? The second one is Tengai Makyō II: Manji Maru, an RPG. Meanwhile on the American and European models, Salamander (a.k.a. Life Force) is included, while it is absent on the Japanese model.

English language games:
-Air Zonk
Side scrolling shoot-em-up starring Zonk, who is basically the Mega Man X to Bonk's Mega Man.
-Alien Crush
Sci-fi/horror themed pinball game in the style of Alien. Multiple screens, camera doesn't scroll up or down.
-Blazing Lazers a.k.a. Gunhed
Good, fast-paced vertically scrolling shooter. Used to be a pack-in title for TurboGrafx-16.
-Bomberman '93
The first Bomberman game with 5-player multiplayer. This is a good one.
-Bonk's Revenge
2nd game in the Bonk series. Platformer with the TG-16's mascot. Eat food, headbutt dinosaurs.
-Cadash
Sidescrolling action game, looks like oldschool Castlevania. Has co-op multiplayer.
-Chew-Man-Fu a.k.a. Be Ball
Puzzle game with action elements, you kick a ball around to beat foes and knock down walls.
-Dungeon Explorer
Top-down action RPG, best in multiplayer. Think Gauntlet.
-J.J. & Jeff
Slapstick action-platformer. This looks very strange, I'm intrigued/horrified.
-Lords of Thunder
Sidescrolling shooter of RFN fame. Known for its rocking soundtrack thanks to CD expansion.
-Military Madness a.k.a. Nectaris
Think Advance Wars, but with hexagonal grids instead. Heard this is a good one.
-Moto Roader
Top-down racer, Micro Machines style. Has 5 player multiplayer. Looks sluggish.
-Neutopia
Rather blatant top-down NES Zelda clone. Well-regarded, the sequel is even better.
-Neutopia II
Sequel to Neutopia. Fixed collission issues. Pretty good, but can't compete with SNES Zelda.
-New Adventure Island
4th game in the Adventure Island series. Side scrolling action-platformer with boomerangs.
-Ninja Spirit
Irem Soft game, think Ninja Gaiden meets Legend of Kage. Supposedly scored the first 10 in EGM.
-Parasol Stars
Single screen puzzle game. Lots of levels, has 2 player co-op multiplayer. Heard it's good once.
-Power Golf
Top-down golf game, looks okay. Neo Turf Masters this ain't. 3 Player multiplayer.
-Psychosis a.k.a. Paranoia
Horizontal shooter. Some levels are set in the player's mind, fighting inner demons. Has Options like R-Type.
-R-Type
Includes both R-Type I & II; the game was too big on HuCard, but on CD it worked to fit both on!
-Soldier Blade
4th game in the Star Soldier series. One of the best looking games on TG-16.
-Space Harrier
Not the best version of this "3D" railshooter. Better on 3DS, 32X, Genesis, and inside Shenmue on DreamCast.
-Splatterhouse
TG-16 getting this bloody, horror-themed hack & slash games was a major draw during its heyday.
-Victory Run
Arcade racing game similar to OutRun. Notoriously difficult.
-Ys Book I & II
Made great use of the CD-ROM to become epic RPGs. Subject of RFN Retroactive 26.

Japanese language games:
Notes: "language" denotes possible language issues expected. Titles in red indicate they are duplicates; the English version is also loaded on the mini consoles.
-Akumajō Dracula X Chi No Rondo a.k.a. Castlevania: Rondo Of Blood
Coveted Castlevania entry. Includes cutscenes & spoken dialogue thanks to CD expansion.
-Aldynes
Horizontal shooter. This was one of 6 SuperGrafx games.  Also on PSN.
-Appare! Gateball
So this looks like croquet and might be the nichest sports title ever?
-Bomberman '94 a.k.a. Mega Bomberman
Another good entry, fun story mode. Has multiplayer. I was fond of it.
-Bomberman Panic Bomber
A match-3 puzzle game featuring Bomberman. Hate when companies do this, remember Worms Blast?
-Chō Aniki
Another RFN Hall of Famer. Horizontal shooter leaning heavily on the Super CD-ROM² for visual... flourish?
-Daimakaimura a.k.a. Ghouls 'N' Ghosts
Arcade port of Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, one of six SuperGrafx releases.
-Dragon Spirit
Fantasy themed vertical shooter. Play as a dragon, breathe fireballs. Catchy music.
-Dungeon Explorer
Duplicate Japanese version, see description under English section.
-Fantasy Zone
Cute horizontal shooter. You can go left or right, levels don't autoscroll. First game in its franchise.
-Galaga '88
Classic space shooter set mostly on a single, static screen. Has some vertically scrolling parts.
-The Genji and the Heike Clans
Action game, alternates between big sprite sideview and three-quarter view levels. A very deep cut.
-Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire a.k.a. Sapphire
One of the most expensive PC Engine games. Lots of counterfeit discs as a result. Never released outside Japan.
-Gradius a.k.a. Nemesis
Side-scrolling arcade shooter port. Includes the PC Engine-only desert stage.
-Gradius II – Gofer No Yabō a.k.a. Nemesis II
Side-scrolling arcade shooter port. Includes an extra level over the arcade version.
-Jaseiken Necromancer a.k.a. Necromancer
Japanese-only RPG. Lots of brown dungeons. I have this on Wii U and it's basically unplayable due to language.
-The Kung Fu a.k.a. China Warrior
Side scrolling beat-em-up with absurdly large sprites. Another RFN darling.
-The Legend of Valkyrie
Action-RPG. Top down Zelda x Golden Axe. Some language issues with shops and (random?) quiz moments.
-Nectaris a.k.a. Military Madness
Duplicate Japanese version, see description under English section.
-Neutopia
Duplicate Japanese version, see description under English section.
-Neutopia II
Duplicate Japanese version, see description under English section.
-Ninja Ryūkenden a.k.a. Ninja Gaiden a.k.a. Shadow Warriors
Has completely redrawn graphics, new soundtrack, different enemy placement to the NES version.
-PC-Genjin a.k.a. Bonk's Adventure a.k.a. Bonk a.k.a. BC Kid
First in the Bonk series, TG-16's mascot, a headbutting caveman. Fun fact: this got a JP-only remake on GameCube.
-Salamander a.k.a. Life Force
Shooter. Gradius spin-off with horizontal & vertical levels. Includes 2 player co-op multiplayer.
-Seirei Senshi Spriggan
Vertical shooter from the team behind MUSHA. Spin-off from Spriggan Powered on SNES.
-Snatcher
Early Hideo Kojimi detective game. The Sega CD version is infamously expensive. I anticipate language issues.
-Spriggan Mark 2 a.k.a. Spriggan Mark II: Re-Terraform Project
Horizontal shooter, play as a mech. Sequel to SNES title. Amusingly jaunty music. Good use of voice.
-Star Parodier a.k.a. Fantasy Star Soldier
Vertical shooter. Colourful Star Soldier parody. Includes a playable PC Engine, as well as Jetpack Bomberman.
-Super Darius
Horizontal shooter, CD-Rom² game. Port of the 3-screen arcade Darius. Multiple routes like Outrun.
-Super Momotarō Dentetsu II
5 player multiplayer boardgame where you run a train company? Expect severe language struggles.
-Super Star Soldier
2nd game in the Star Soldier franchise. Vertical shooter. Good series in general, very tough.
-Ys Book I & II
Duplicate Japanese version, see description under English section.

In summation: 21 shooters, 8 sidescrolling action games, 4 platformers, 4 adventure games, 3 RPGs, 3 puzzle games, 2 racing titles, 2 sport sims, 1 video pinball, 1 boardgame, 1 strategy game, and 2 Bomberman titles (don't really fit under action do they).

5. Virtual console comparison
Many of the games above were already available through Virtual Console on Wii and Wii U respectively. Here's what is on Wii U Virtual Console, but not on the new mini consoles. Most are owned by Konami, so they must've been left off on purpose.

-Battle Chopper (owned by Irem Soft I think)
-Battle Lode Runner
-Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure
-Break In
-Detana!! TwinBee
-Devil's Crush
-Digital Champ: Battle Boxing
-Double Dungeons (owned by Masaya/Extreme)
-Final Soldier
-Image Fight
-Image Fight II
-Legend of Hero Tonma (owned by Irem Soft)
-Shockman (owned by Masaya/Extreme)
-Vigilante (owned by Irem Soft)
-World Sports Competition

6. Thoughts
Overall my first thoughts are cautiously optimistic. Konami is really bad at marketing though, their website includes spelling errors, no easy way to compare lists per region, and nothing is sorted alphabetically. Pre-orders appear to only go through Amazon which is already annoying, and finding the price is up to the buyer to convert (90-100$ I expect). Not a word about who is doing the emulation either. I hope it's M2, or just straight up the Wii U virtual console emulator, that one's really good. [EDIT: Confirmed M2 is working on this, also confirmed Konami can't market well.]

Obviously some weird omissions. TurboGrafx-16 without Splatterhouse is basically N64 without GoldenEye, although Splatterhouse is a bad game of course, but it's iconic for the system.[EDIT: Splatterhouse was announced later on.] It's also beyond me why Bonk's Adventure is only on there in Japanese and Bonk 3 is missing when both exist on Virtual Console in English.
There's many more notable exclusions (Final Soldier, Gates of Thunder, Devil's Crush, Raiden, Legendary Axe, etc.) but I guess they just don't wanna go for 75 or even 100 games.
I never had a TG-16, but have played several titles on Virtual Console which were mostly good. Seriously considering to get this as my first Mini Console, although the Genesis one also looks interesting and Sega have been much better about communicating features. But the TG-16 games seem a bit more mysterious...

Given the proliferation of video games as a form of art and/or entertainment over the past 40+ years, there's no way even more enthusiastic players have tried every major series. I'd be curious to read what influential franchises, or perhaps even genres, people here haven't tried (yet).

For me there's quite a few:
-Mega Man is a good example of a long-running, highly formative franchise that I've just never played. Physical copies tend to be expensive, but that's hardly an excuse in a world of virtual console. I believe I even asked once on this forum which would be good entry points - it just hasn't happened yet.
-Resident Evil is one of the most prolific media franchises, period. There's easily 20-30 distinct instalments and spin-offs, and that's excluding phone and arcade games. Many of them are praised highly, they're on every platform under the Sun, I even own REmake on GameCube. If I have time this October I'm gonna try and see what the hype is all about.
-2D Zelda games Mop It Up made me realise these are another blind spot of mine. Haven't played a single one, nor did I ever try similar series like Neutopia, StarTropics, or Alundra. Although to be honest I'm not going out of my way to rectify this, either. Currently I'm still chipping away at Breath of the Wild and in the future I want to try Majora's Mask, at which point I might be Zelda'd out for a while.
-Dark Souls and similar games are undoubtedly very popular right now. I don't tend to gravitate to very difficult games because I'm generally not very good at games, but I'm open to give this a try if the opportunity presents itself. Maybe on Switch one day?

There's many other series I've never tried, like Kingdom Hearts, Uncharted, Gears of War, Madden NFL and basically the entire battle royale shooter phenomenon. These either don't appeal to me very much, or they mostly exist on platforms I don't have access to. I do want to try a Madden game at some point though, maybe it'd help me understand American football better.

So which major series haven't you played? Would you like to change this? Is it mostly due to constraints on time and money, or a lack of interest too? Are you actively avoiding some series/franchises? Tell us why!

Nintendo Gaming / super bomberman 2 snes
« on: March 14, 2019, 12:31:12 PM »
Is there secret world on Super Bomberman 2 snes game?

24
Since we're on the topic of digital services ending soon, thought this might warrant a mention too.

Guitar Hero Live (2015) on Wii U and other platforms has 2 major game modes: a regular 'career mode' with 42 songs installed on the disc, as well as a big streaming service called Guitar Hero TV. The latter mode functions as basically a 24/7 rotation of nearly 500 music videos which you can drop into and start playing at any time, or I guess use as your personal MTV or something.

Looks like that secondary mode is ending on December 1st, so if you've still got Guitar Hero Live on Wii U or elsewhere and wanna give the TV mode another spin or two, consider this your final notice! Next year the disc will just play the 42 pre-installed songs, and the streaming service will presumably stop functioning.

I'm assuming this also gates off any unlocked/bought songs, so I hope nobody winds up regretting signing that class-action-waiver when you first installed the game! ;)

Nintendo Gaming / Just Dance 2019 keeps Wii alive!
« on: October 23, 2018, 08:43:19 PM »
This week sees the launch of Just Dance 2019, on Switch, Wii U, Wii, Xbox 1, X360, and PS4. You might note the absence of PS3, looks like that platform is being dropped going forward.

The series is single-handedly keeping the Wii alive at this point, as the last release on the platform was... Just Dance 2018. With the Deep Silver-published Let's Sing franchise apparantly not coming back for a release on Wii this calendar year, if ever, it falls to Ubisoft's second-best selling franchise ever to keep Wii relevant. (Wii U has seen only a few more releases this year by the way, especially if we're talking retail.)

It's interesting to note how the first Just Dance in 2009 really focused on pop classics (Eye of the Tiger, Elvis, Iggy Pop, Baha Men, Gorillaz, Kylie Minogue... Cotton Eyed Joe...), but the series has since moved into more current pop charts.
Ubisoft is only this year taking a bunch of versions offline (Just Dance versions 2014-2018), which indicates they kept online support for most of these on Wii up for ages. I'm not sure if the Wii versions are compatible with their Just Dance Unlimited service, which gives access to the full song library, or if they support the smartphone-as-controller options (assume not?).

Anyway, who here has played a Just Dance game? What did you think of it? I'll admit I thought they were shovelware trash at first, but having played the 2018 Switch version changed my mind. It's a fun game, hilarious to play with friends, and it could easily double as an exercise game.
