« on: June 18, 2007, 11:07:01 AM »
Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone here was planning on attending PAX07 this year?  Just in case you didn't know what PAX was, check out the Penny Arcade web comic for more details.

Also, I just found out I was randomly selected to be an Omeganaught!  Exciting times!!

Hah, awesome.  I was an Omeganaut for the 2005 expo.  Expect to be thrown into random situations where anyone could win.  Getting through has a TON to do with luck, especially if Diceland is the first game again.

You were at 2005? I attended 05 and 06.  I missed out on most of the Omegathon's though, how far did you get?  Hey Shy, you wanna try and meet up at PAX?  I'm bring some of the other members of the MNC (Monday Night Crew) with me and we'd love to meet up with other gamers.  I can use the extra cheerleaders as well.

I made it to the whopping second round, which was the only round I was confident at...

Mario Kart.

It was single race, 7th and 8th place got eliminated.  I rode between first and fourth the entire time until getting luigi fireballed before the final jump right before the finish line...  I spun out, missed the jump, and fell to 8th.

It sucked.  I would have cleaned up if there were multiple races, but I just got unlucky.

We can work something out Shy, it shouldn't be to difficult to meet up amongst a group of 20,000+

Pale that totally sucks.  I've played a lot of Mario Kart and know exactly what your talking about.  You could be in first the entire race, last turn you get blue shelled, red shelled, stared, lightning, look up and your in 8th.  Sickening.  I'm sorry to hear that though.  Did they do anything special for you guys, like give you shirts or something?  Did you watch the rest of the Omegathon?

Boss, the coolest perk is that your Omeganaut pass works kind of like a backstage pass.  Everywhere you go (even after you lose out of the competition) you can skip lines.  I used mine to get into the exhibit hall before it actually opened, giving me like a half hour with Twilight Princess without anyone hassling me.  It was great.

Plus, just the chat time with Gabe and Tycho made it worth it.  They hung out with the omeganaut crew at many of the events, and I got to know them quite a bit over the 3 days.

So yeah, even if you get unlucky and lose in the first round, you'll still be glad you said yes.

Awesome, sounds like being a mini-VIP of sorts.  I was hoping to get some face time with them to push our new website my friends and I created.  It's a webcomic and I imagine with the help of those two, we can really get the site of the ground.  Here's hoping.  Oh, are you going to be attending this year?

Thatguy, did you mean Puzzle Quest?  If so, I played that one to the end and completed the game with a maxed out wizard.  I tried playing the multiplayer with some friends, but all the character classes become broken after a certain point, especially the Warrior.  We'll see.

BTW, anyone up for some Planet Puzzle League tonight or Thursday?  I have a website meeting tonight, but can play around 10:30ish or anytime after 9:00 tomorrow.

Nah, I'm not going this year.  I'm all the way on the east coast.  Only reason I went in 05 is because I had been wanting to see Seattle so I just planned a vacation for the same time as the expo.

For diceland (assuming it's the first round) just look over your die closely.  Find the piece that can shoot in every direction on the most sides, and throw that one towards the edge of the table (to maximize your defense).  As long as you get one dice in play, you'll be able to continue on.

Diceland, huh?  I remember that one being kind of a drag as a first round game last year.  Maybe they will change it up this year, probably not though.  Better safe than sorry.  Practice, practice, and then hope lady luck is on my side.

I hate that PAX is on the west coast, even though I LOVE Seattle.  One of the, albeit lofty, goals of my friends and I creating our website, is to one day have the east coast equivalent to PAX.  Maybe make them fall six months apart.  Again, it's a huge goal, but what do you accomplish by aiming low?  We're hoping to generate some buzz at PAX and really get people interested in visiting the site.  Of course, the first step is to generate enough money in advertising to pay the artist to work full time on the comics.  We are also planning on hitting all the Con's in the area as well.  We got a guy in the group that is financing everything, even with the thought of no return value on his investment.  That alone will give us a better shot at being more successful in our goals.

Sorry, I ramble on about the site, forgive me.  So Shyguy, your going to have to send me a picture or something and we'll make plans to meet at a certain location.  Then again, we do have like 2 months to plan this out, right?

Thanks for the support, Thatguy.  Maybe we can try and play some PPC this weekend.  My job is kind of a M-F type a deals, so my weekends are always free.  Send me a PM or post on the board if you get a chance to play.  That goes for anyone else who wants to Wi-Fi it.

Wasn't there a rumor that 08 was going to be east coast?  I remember hearing that discussed in 05.

I personally vote for Rochester, NY.  It'd be grand! =P

Ok, how about Boston?

Well after doing some extensive research (opening map quest), I've found that Richmond, Va is about the closest point to the "center" of the east coast.  That would seem to be the most ideal place to hold it as far as driving distances are concerned.  Living in Georgia, it would be about a 7 hour drive; a drive that wouldn't be so far fetched for a east coast PAX.  It's about a 6 hour drive from New York, where I imagine a large majority of people would be driving from.  Thoughts?

Still no mention of Omegathon games.  This is driving me mad.  Pale, any advice as to what I should be doing to prepare at this time?  Is anyone in these forums plan on attending PAX this year or are Shy and I the only ones?

If you like pokemon, you should check out our new comic today.  It's the first one in a EPIC three part trilogy.  The artist also surprised me by having it colored, instead of the black and white which I was expecting.  Also, we've started a new type of font, so hopefully this will be easier for everyone to read.  Finally, we seem to have a few nagging IE6 issues to iron out, but I've been told these will get figured out soon...or soonish.  The site is linked in my signature.

Again, please provide feedback, both good and bad.

Thanks!

The best advice I can give is to not stress about it and just play a lot of games so your reactions are up to snuff =P

Like I said, they are going to throw a ton of games at you and you won't play any one of them for very long.  Keeping a cool head and getting a little lucky is what it will take to win.

The official game list is up!

Round 1: Pac Man
Round 2: Calling All Cars
Round 3: Quake III
Round 4: Karaoke Revolution
Round 5: Puzzle Quest
Round 6: ???

Oh man, I'm really concerned about round 4.  I mean come on, Karaoke?!  Lord help us all.  Hey Thatguy, good call on the Puzzle Quest.  I'm interested in knowing how they are going to make that work multiplayer.  Any thoughts or advice out there?

I thought it was multiplayer already.  I've never played it.

If I were you, I'd be a little concerned about Karaoke Revolution.  I've played it once, but It takes a few minutes to get the hang of.  Even if you have trained to hear pitch and can read music and all that, you'll need to get the hang of portraying pitches to initially arbitrary dots on the screen.

With Pac-Man, if it's the original, you should learn whatever tricks you can perform that get the ghosts to change directions.  I believe that is very helpful, though I never learned them myself.

With Puzzle Quest, I'd go to GFAQs and see if you can't get battle advice there.  Do you know which versions you'll be playing?  It could actually be the 360 version that's slated to be released.  I'd read up on it if I were you.

If Karaoke is done the same as it was in 05 and you are just an average singer, you stand a good chance of making it through.  But luck plays a huge role there as well, as you will go head to head against another singer.. winner moves on... loser is out.  Therefore if you draw one of the best singers you are screwed, and if you draw one of the worst singers, it's a cakewalk.

I would expect that because Pac-Man isn't the final round, it is most likely Pac-Man CE for Live Arcade.

Thanks for the advice thus far.  I've talked to my friends and they are going to try and help me out.  Singing has become my new favorite past time and my roommates new torture time.  I'll see if I can't scrounge up a copy of Quake III and work on my fragging skills.

I seriously doubt that Smash in any form will be in the finals.  The past games have been: Pong, Combat, and Tetris.  I'm thinking a really old recognizable title like that or something that is of a very early SNES/Genesis era title.  Starcraft in the finals would rock though.

My friends and I are planning on handing out free swag to promote our site while at PAX.  I already got the OK from the PA guys and we are going to be handing out some cool stuff over the course of the three days.  Shy, if you catch up with me at PAX, I'll make sure you get some stuff.  That goes for anyone else who may be going.  I need a big ole' cheering section.

I want one of each!
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Greetings from PAX! It's a good show so far, played a number of games, and saw some previews of stuff. I watched in the first round of Omegathon, BossHogx made it through! Who new Jenga could be such a nail-biter?

I may post later with more impressions of the individual games.

And I'm back! Fun times, played a lot of demoes (see various game threads), went to some cool previews of Assassins Creed and Far Cry 2 (world premiere baby!) Saw the 1upYours live (with Luke Smith) which was cool, and I saw plenty of people who I had only seen online before (Gamejew is a tiny man)

Bosshogx was in the final eight of Omegathon last I checked, Plus he gave me vudu's swag

He was a finalist!  It's slightly up on Penny-Arcade.  He lost to Accolon(?), I think.

The final game was Halo or Halo 2, or something like that.  I wasn't too far off, then, but still my StarCraft suggestion wouldn't have helped.

Congrats!

My flight left before the final Round, but yeah, Ben made it to the last round! Halo 3 was the final game, and I believe as Runner up he automatically is entered into next years Omegathon.

Hey guys,

I met up with Shyguy after the first round of the Omegathon.  Nice guy, ironically though, not shy.  Hmmm....false advertising perhaps?  Special thanks for tracking me down.  Hope to see you again next year.

I did make it to the finals and lost in Halo 3.  Having never played Halo before, I thought I put on a good show.  You guys can probably find videos roaming around youtube if your interested in seeing how I did.  The good news is that I'm automatically entered into next years tournament and I'm supposed to get a nice chunk of credit on a gift card.  Oh, I also got to keep the sword, a Wakizashi, that Tycho gave me on stage.  The shorter sword of the paired Daisho, the Wakizashi is also known as the "Honor Blade" due to it's use in the decapitating of defeated foes in an honorable fashion.

Here's some more info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wakizashi

I'm actually liking the parallel of defeating next years Omeganauts in an honorable fashion.  If I get to the finals next year and win, I will pass on the Wakizashi to the losing Omeganaut.  Hopefully, it will become a time honored tradition.

Hey bosshogx, congrats on getting the runner up spot! Hope you  got to pimp MNC to plenty of people while you were there. Did you get to check out much of the rest of the show or where you on a diligent training regimen?

Sadly no, I didn't get to see to much of the show.  I was shuffled around from area to area on the second and third days of the Omegathon.  Day one was pretty loose though, day two had about an hour to an hour and a half between events for some free time.  The last day was a total lockdown though.  I got to round five, upon winning had about 45 minutes then went to the big stage for the last two hours of the show.

All in all, it was an excellent time though and I'm looking forward to winning it all next year.  We were able to pimp out the site fairly well, it's amazing how people react to the expression, "Hey, anyone want some free stuff?"
