Transform and Rollout: Not just for Mew anymore

Dare to believe that NFR has survived to return for episode 4, as Megatron, Starscream and Soundwave Austen, Donald and Stephen take you on a journey through their latest round of gaming adventures. Stephen leads off New Business with the Recommended-for-Kairon dating sim visual novel Sprung, notable for being a DS launch title and getting snake eyes in EGM, which is somehow comparable to Phoenix Wright? Stephen continues with the PS2 version of Culdecpt (recently released in Japan on 3DS, coming out in America half past never) before finishing with the most unusual "game" in history: a time-travelling Microsoft Office training program starring the infamous Clippy. Is it a long-lost Super Solvers classic, or should it belong in the edutainment trash bin next to Mario’s Time
Machine?

Donald attempts to bring sanity to the proceedings with a collection of games that would make Ian Dury happy: “Sex” (or the lack thereof) in Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky; “Rock and Roll” (along with several other genres) in the XBLA rhythm game Rock Band Blitz (thus continuing our 4 episode-long string of rhythm games); and on “Drugs” is how he felt while playing NWR’s Game of the Decade Metroid Prime (via Metroid Prime Trilogy).

Austen then summons his pale horse for the genre-mashing Darksiders 2; brings us closer to the Matrix with Transformers:  Fall of Cybertron (a game that truly lights that franchise’s darkest hour); and wraps up with further observations from the Vita-outselling (though at only 40,000 copies that’s not saying much…) The Last Story, which takes a turn for the Assassin's Creed rather unexpectedly along with elements of…Quest 64? Well, the law of averages dictates that something would eventually. In what other game can you receive a bag of money just for sitting on a bench one minute; a moment later learn to swim with the use of magic frogs; and then later watch with glee as your generic, spiky-haired swordsman charges head-first at an all-powerful villain (seriously, why do they DO that?) just to be swatted away?

After the return of Now Postal Now Posted, Whatcha Been Watching has a little bit of everything. Stephen has a spot of tea while visiting the friendly Doctor Who, a touch of reality TV with the ultra-sugary Cake Boss, and LARPing with the Dungeons and Dragons-inspired Journey Quest. Donald has a report from the biggest TV party of the week – The Price is Right 40th Anniversary Special, and Austen shows his animated side with the first season/collection Blu-rays of Transformers: Prime (Hey, North American animation!) and Persona 4: The Animation (apparently Yu Narukami Charlie's a jerk now that he’s been given a personality and spoken dialogue.  Who knew?)

A staggering Listener Mail shortage and the Persona 4 discussion leads to this week's Feature Discussion on reinvention and iteration. Is there a time to do it right? Or basically, do you want Castlevania II or III? As usual, the 1Up/Poison Mushrooms wrap it up with discussion of issues like Zen Pinball 2’s table install problems on PS3/Vita, the rows of black cats that apparently run past Platinum Games' headquarters every day, and how the enhanced versions of this show are getting out faster than usual.

We're still looking for feedback and questions for Listener Mail, which you can send to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com.  You can also post in our thread on the NWR forums, or leave us comments under this post on our website at http://nintendofreeradio.podbean.com.  Finally, if you're an iTunes user, be sure to drop us a rating as well so we know what you want to hear on future episodes!  Nothin’s gonna stand in our way of bringing you another action-packed intellectually stimulating ungodly-long episode in 2 weeks, but in the meantime: "Till All Are One!"

Sadly, we were unable to secure VHS tapes to record for RSS subscribers, but we do have another massive-length episode of Nintendo Free Radio for you featuring Stephen; Austen; and Donald (what do you MEAN there used to be another guy?) rambling about their latest misadventures in the world of video gaming.

This time, Austen kicks off New Business bear-ly scratching the surface of Atlus/Arc System Work’s new fighting game: Persona 4 Arena, a home console game that un-bear-ably displays controller commands with Fight Stick inputs for some thread-bear reason.  Afterwards, it’s time to party like it’s 1985 with the PSN’s latest rhythm game, Retro/Grade, ending (appropriately enough) with initial impressions of the Wii’s swan song, Mistwalker’s The Last Story.  Have the creators of Final Fantasy finally created a JRPG without a terrible opening Act, or have they lost that odyssey?

Donald then steps up on stage to discuss pacing and Classic Controller Pro issues with Sega/NIS America’s Wii tactical/strategy/dating sim Sakura Wars: So Long My Love; his experience on the Terrain of Testament playing (we think?) the PlayStation 2’s Fire Pro Wrestling Returns; and his battle against Spiral Power in the PlayStation Portable Mini Sasume Tactics!

Switching things up, Stephen renders his verdict on the WayForward 3DS (and soon to be Wii U) puzzle platformer Mighty Switch Force.  Does the game do justice to Nintendo’s latest handheld, or should the developers have been booked for negligence?  Wrapping things up, Stephen then recounts how the pacing and analog stick controls aren’t such a snap in the Virtual Console’s Nintendo 64 Pokemon game, as well as the historical turn-based strategy game Civilization V on the PC.

Following New Business, we activate the interlocks and connect the Dyna-therms for another installment of What Are We Watching (cheesy 80s theme song optional).  Everything old is new again as Austen discusses his newest anime Blu Ray acquisitions in the wonderful The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and the bizarre (but well-constructed) first season of Shakugan no Shana. Meanwhile, Donald describes the culinary misadventures of Gordon Ramsay in MasterChef and Hotel Hell.  Finally, Ceric delivers a techno-babble double-whammy in Star Trek: Voyager and the Voltron: Defender of the Universe sequel series with an-already legendarily terrible opening theme: Voltron Force.

Afterwards in the Feature Discussion, with the final issue of Nintendo Power on the horizon the 3 of us sit around the camp fire and ramble for nearly an hour about our memories of the beloved magazine; our thoughts on the publication’s closure; and the future of Nintendo’s marketing in the Internet age. We then once again conclude the show with our “1Ups” and “Poison Mushrooms”, including such topics as the 2013 World Pokemon Championships in Vancouver; the surprisingly-strong year of downloadable titles (little did we know La-Mulana would get announced for North American WiiWare shortly thereafter); the industry’s frustrating practice of creating underwhelming countdown web sites; and…adventures in house cleaning and storage bins?

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this and past episodes, so feel free to drop us a comment in the Talkback thread or on our website. Be sure to send in your Listener Mail as well, and (time permitting) we’ll read and discuss it on an upcoming show!  You’re also welcome to talk with us and other fine (and often eccentric) folks over at the Nintendo World Report Forums!  Finally, now that we’re finally on iTunes, please don’t forget to rate us there.  We’ll see you in a few weeks, but until then we hope you enjoy the show!

You won't like his girlfriend

It was announced recently by People Magazine that Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne were engaged to be married. The two Canadian singers are known for torturing millions of people with horrible "music" and for nearly starting innumerable Canada->US wars.

Lavigne's "Sk8r Boi" was featured in the 2006 DS rhythm game Elite Beat Agents.

When asked for comment, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter was quoted as saying "Their child will do for music what Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings of Essex did to the art of poetry. Also, screw NeoGAF."

http://www.lo-ping.org/2012/07/03/eu-court-ruling-allows-for-re-sale-of-used-games-by-end-users-you/

Quote
A recent ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union has officially stated that “an author of software cannot oppose the resale of his ‘used’ licences allowing the use of his programs downloaded from the internet”.  In essence, it is now illegal in Europe for companies to try to stop you from selling your used digitally distributed software.
As for what qualifies as “used”?  Well, the ruling pretty much covers that as well:

The exclusive right of distribution of a copy of a computer program covered by such a licence is exhausted on its first sale.
And that is that. After a company has their first sale, they can’t do anything else about it.  This step is huge in the digital distribution sense. You are now officially allowed to sell your Steam / Origin / GoG games and whatever…if you live in Europe.
Does this mean the end of Steam sales? Is Gabe going to get rich selling giftwrap? How screwed is GOG?

Nintendo Gaming / Miyamoto reassigning self to smaller projects

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — The creator of Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda will step down from his current position at Nintendo but remain with the company to work on smaller, more personal projects, Wired.com has learned.
In an exclusive interview with Wired.com on Wednesday, the 59-year-old head of Nintendo’s game design department said that he will move away from supervising the development of massive games like this year’s Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Super Mario 3D Land, passing the torch to the younger designers in the company and working on projects that won’t take as long to complete.
“Inside our office, I’ve been recently declaring, ‘I’m going to retire, I’m going to retire,’” Miyamoto said through his interpreter. “I’m not saying that I’m going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position.”
“What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself,” Miyamoto said. “Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.”

Nintendo Gaming / 9/13 3DS Conference Bingo thread
« on: September 11, 2011, 06:19:35 PM »

Blank card for your edification

I can't believe I've got a Bingo riding on Mach Rider, but there ya go.

So we know we've got the following so far:

NES - Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong Jr, Ice Climber
GBA - Yoshi's Island, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Mario Kart Super Circuit, Wario Ware Mega Microgame$, Metroid Fusion

NES

So we've got 2 games that were in the Classic NES series, 2 that were e-reader games and one that was both (Ice Climber). Based on that, and assuming that the only games that they'd have permission to put out gratis is 1st party stuff.

I'm going to open the bidding at: Metroid, Zelda II, Clu Clu Land, Golf and Ice Hockey.

Metroid will be there to dull the pain of no Metroid Zero Mission, and hey, it's the 25th anniversary of Zelda right? If they're not going to plop out another collector's disc, might as well give the loyal fans another cheap thrill. Ice Hockey will be the obligatory proof that they're not just porting stuff that's also been ported to the GBA. Clu Clu Land and Golf are probably the simplest games that don't already have an equivalent game on the eShop already (Excitebike 3D Classic, and Dr Mario will be out on the eShop in all territories by September 1).

GBA
List of possible games
This is the trickier one to predict. There MAY be another Mario Advance game or Mario and Luigi, but I can't see it happening between Mario vs DK, Mario Kart and Yoshi's Island. It may be a little too much Mario for anyone to handle.

I think they may take the opportunity to float a couple of franchises that have been previously moribund, so we're probably going to get two of an F-Zero game, an Advance Wars game or a Fire Emblem game. They have lots of Kirby to play with, a potential Game and Watch Gallery (#4), a couple of remakes of Donkey Kong Country, and quirky stuff like Drill Dozer. The longshots are anything Square-developed (Nintendo is the publisher of record for all of Square's GBA output, but later, rarer stuff like FFVI Advance is NA/Europe only) and any Pokemon game that isn't a spinoff.

My predictions: F-Zero Maximum Velocity, Advance Wars, Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland, Pokemon Pinball Ruby/Sapphire, and Drill Dozer

What say you?

Nintendo Gaming / No Mega Man Legends 3 for you!

We'd like to thank you for your ongoing loyal support of Mega Man Legends 3. Today, however, we must regrettably announce the discontinuation of this project. From the outset the MML3 Project was intended to give gamers across the world insight and input into the development process. Part of this process includes an assessment of whether the title will go into full production, and is based on a number of criteria with input from different sectors of the company.
Unfortunately it was not felt that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project met the required criteria, and it is with regret that we must announce that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project has been cancelled, meaning that Capcom will not be releasing the Prototype or the full game. Additionally, updates of the Mega Man Legends Developer Room will cease as of today, though the North American Developer Room and its forums will remain open indefinitely.
We can only express our deepest apologies to all of you who have lent us your unending support, including participation in the Mega Man Legends 3 Developer Room. On behalf of the entire Legends team, please accept our sincere apology for failing to meet the expectations of the fans.
We thank you all so much for your extended support of this title and this community, and we hope that you will continue to support the Mega Man franchise as well as other Capcom games.
Short form message to fans, with an assist from Kirby: t(-_-t)

The list on Nintendo's website.

I think it's more stunning that the MyNotebooks are among the things that will carry over, along with Cave Story DSi (somewhere, NIS just threw a shoe). And yes Zach, Shantae made the cut.

Nintendo DSi Browser

Available in a retail release:
Asphalt IV (replaced by Asphalt 3D)

Rumored to be re-released on 3DS with new functionality:
Flipnote Studio

  • Earthworm Jim
  • Let's Golf
  • Oregon Trail
  • Real Soccer 2009
  • Real Soccer 2010
  • SUDOKU MASTER
  • SUDOKU SENSEI
  • Sudoku Student

Nintendo Gaming / Soul Calibur 2 GC - still worth it?
« on: May 12, 2011, 12:26:01 AM »
I rented SC2 once a few years ago for Gamecube, had fun with beating down fools with Link and admiring Ivy's Most Common Superpower. I also bought 3 for a song and had fun with it for a couple of weeks.

Now someone's basically said I can get full-box SC2 if I want it. Does anyone here still play it? How would it hold up?

You Don't Know Jack is coming to everything (except PSP lol) on February 8.

For my money, it's the best trivia game in history. And it's $30 on every system, and will have online play on 360/PS3.

The launch trailer and other stuff

So who's up for a good ol' fashioned screwing?

General Gaming / So let's say I want to get a PSP soon.
« on: December 15, 2010, 11:54:26 PM »
The recent announcement of the new FF4 + After Years in 2D compilation clinched it - I'm going to make my Lindemann Syndrome even worse and get a PSP once a US release is confirmed.

When I do, the shopping list also includes the Personas, Lunar, Mega Man Powered Up, Maverick Hunter X and the Street Fighter Alpha 3 re-release. My tastes tend toward JRPGs and puzzle games, and it's safe to assume I'm not getting a Go. What else should I look into?

168
Someone I know pointed out that the whole Hot Coffee fiasco broke about 5 years ago, and it got me wondering - is there something you can think of in gaming that should have set off a massive storm of controversy?

Two examples I can think of, one Nintendo and one not:
Nintendo
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl - The existence of Arceus
It's bad enough that Pokemon prominently features evolution, but then you have to go and create something that has the highest overall stat total in history, appears in a place called the "Hall of Origin" and has a move called Judgment? And left enough hints about the creation myth of the region that a six-year old could fill in the blanks?

It's a million-selling series, but it's obviously been a long time since everyone and their magician brother-in-law decided to get their panties in a bunch over it. Still, I can't help but wonder if the only thing saving Nintendo from a boycott was the fact that it was made inaccessible aside from an event item that to this point, has never been released.

Non-Nintendo
Persona 3 - The Evoker
Relevant quote on the subject: "The game's most iconic feature is the method by which the members of SEES release their Personas: by firing a gun-like object called an Evoker at their head" (Wikipedia, "Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3", accessed 8/30/10)

You're summoning a demonic creature by shooting yourself in the head? And nobody had a problem with this? Didn't Ozzy Osbourne get dragged into court over "Suicide Solution"? Or was it because it was a Persona game released by Atlus, who don't have the marketing reach of a Rockstar, so nobody noticed?

Just got the latest Nintendo Power (stole my brother's) and thank god they had Final Fantasy III strategy in it. The Cultists's Tower is kicking my ass eight ways to next Sunday. Why did they lock out Attack again?

Also, they had something called the X-Band in it. Something about playing NBA Jam and Super Mario Kart over the Internet. I'd get it but my parents don't want to pay the long distance charges - they're ticked enough about paying for this "Internet" thing.

Activision has signed Bungie in a mammoth 10-year publishing deal. The   publisher will have worldwide rights to "bring Bungie's next big action   game universe to market".    "Under the terms of the agreement, Activision will have exclusive,   worldwide rights to publish and distribute all future Bungie games based   on the new intellectual property on multiple platforms and devices."
The press release points out that Bungie "remains an independent company   and will continue to make their own intellectual property".
Bungie boss Harold Ryan said the studio picked Activision for its   "global reach, multi-platform experience and marketing expertise". This   suggests that the Halo maker is finally going to develop for formats   other than Xbox 360.

Nintendo Gaming / Has anyone else tried Sands of Destruction?
« on: February 22, 2010, 12:32:11 AM »
I just sent it back to the non-unionized Canadian equivalent to Gamefly recently - was in the mood for a DS RPG and as a raging Chrono Trigger fanboy you've got me with Mitsuda music and a Kato plot.

Without spoiling anything, it doesn't do anything new or exciting with the genre but I enjoyed the plot enough to see it through to the end of the game. Also, the boss battles get REALLY cheap when they start getting 6-7 turns in a row and get to use their super move with a 45-second cutscene twice in a row. And you can't skip the battle cutscenes (though you can skip the story stuff if you want to).

Also, be ready to use sleep mode a lot because there's a lot of times where you'll want to save but the heal/save points are two areas away. It happened to me at least four or five times in a file that I finished in 25 hours (probably 30 with all the times the battery died in sleep mode while I slept or was working).
