Nintendo Gaming / Official Game Boy Player Discussion
« on: June 21, 2003, 03:50:31 PM »
Here's a question you didn't answer:

Can you use the US bootdisc with a Japanese Gameboy Player?  Some guy who already has one and knows how to get a US one cheap wanted to know.

Gamers.com gives it an 8
Gamespot does the same
Gaming-Age loves it...
EGM gave it an 8.5,7.5,7.5

Seems like this is yet another underrated, under the radar cube exclusive.  More of a 4 player brawler than anything, a game of this type getting even 8 range reviews is fantastic.  What do you guys think?

You know, the only stuff I'm worried about having to do with 3DO is Heroes of Might and Magic.  It's a fantastic series and I hope somebody nabs New World Computing soon.

Nintendo Gaming / The article that reveals Nintendo´s true nemesis
« on: May 28, 2003, 04:08:25 PM »
The article brings up some interesting points, but when it comes down to it I actually buy more 3rd party GC stuff than 1st and second party (although I buy all those releases as well).  If anybody wants to check out my collection, it's right here.  I'd say it's pretty much been pared down to just the very, very best.  (Well, the GC stuff at any rate.)

The problem here is that I'm not going to waste my money on GARBAGE because I own all 3 systems.  Will I buy Soul Calibur 2?  You bet.  RS3?  ooooh yeah.  Viewtiful Joe?  HELL YES.

I buy GOOD games, not crap.  The problem these days is that the market has just plain gotten too damn large to keep up with, even on just the "weak third party" GC.  I don't have time for crappy games and you shouldn't waste your time on them either, especially when there's great quality titles that are almost always exclusive.

I often wonder if the market isn't on the verge of another crash, honestly.  There's too many unremarkable multiplatform games coming out and not enough users to support them adequately.  3D0, Acclaim, Midway... I wonder if they'll be around in a couple more years.

www.capcom.co.jp/vj has all the Viewtiful Joe commercials on it.

I suggest you go to www.eurogamer.net and read the whole interview this is taken from.  This is most likely a mistranslation and regardless, it's pulled out of context.  Yuji Naka <3's GC.

Viewtiful Joe on the demo disc definitely sold me on it for sure.  I'll be first in line to nab it the day it comes out.

Nintendo Gaming / Why don't Nintendo fans like Fighting Games?
« on: May 26, 2003, 10:18:36 AM »
I think Nintendo fans like fighting games when they're good ones.  I seem to remember Killer Instinct Gold selling pretty damn well, and the SNES Street Fighter games as well.

Soul Calibur 2 will sell very well on GC, guaranteed.  Personally, I won't buy it on GC for Link, I'll buy it on GC because I love my wavebird, and after playing the demo it plays FINE on the GC pad.  If they were to release a Tekken game or something similar, you can bet that'd sell, too.

DBZ Budokai is coming to GC, but unless it's been improved quite a bit, I'm not interested, and I suspect most GC fans won't be either.  Why?  So far Atari says it's the same exact game with a bit cleaner graphics... a year later?  Bleh.

Nintendo Gaming / Where is the Killer 7 video?
« on: May 15, 2003, 09:19:12 PM »
The actual video quality is pretty cruddy because it's a digital camcorder pointed at a TV screen.  The footage itself, however, is sweet as I mentioned earlier

The new Killer7 video is fantastic.  It's got a bunch of new characters in it, and you get a better look at Harman Smith, who looks way creepier this time around.  Tons of blood, and this time around it really oozes with "Capcom stylishness".  Worth a download for sure.

Nintendo Gaming / Do you feel the GC is slowly dying away..?
« on: May 12, 2003, 11:52:58 AM »
Basically, the way I see it, Nintendo is at the very backswing of their momentum in recent years, which started with the N64's eventual market leading position loss and is now slowly being turned around by Nintendo.  They've still got image problems, they've still got problems with developers, but compared to the N64, this is pure heaven.  With the amount of respect Nintendo has been garnering with it's current owners and the (pretty damn good job) they've been doing with turning around their third party relations, it's only an amount of time before the GC starts gaining momentum.  Anybody who sees Nintendo's lineup this year KNOWS it's even better than last year's, and anybody who likes Nintendo, really liked their GC last year, especially around last Christmas.

One thing a lot of people need to recognize is that Nintendo needed/needs to satisfy the existing Nintendo fans first and get all those games out that appeal to Nintendo fans.  Nintendo's done a great job of doing this, and now that they've got that in full swing they can now start concentrating on making everybody else happy.  So this year, Mario Kart,Metal Gear Twin Snakes, Final Fantasy CC, and Rogue Leader 3 are the "big holiday" titles... see a pattern?  How about we add FZero to that, and Viewtiful Joe... now is it apparent?  Next year it's going to be even more obvious.  Nintendo's got strong 3rd party stuff, they've got "cool" games, and it's only a matter of time before their "kiddie" image starts to slip.

Nintendo can only gain momentum from where they are starting around August the way I see it, especially stacked up against the Xbox lineup.  MS better have some serious surprises at E3, otherwise they're in trouble.  There's only so long they can mooch off PC franchises before they relegate themselves to niche status, and without the help of Japanese developers, it's destined to happen, and I think it's going to take a lot more than just Rare to dig them out of that hole.

Right now I'm more worried about my Xbox than my GC honestly, especially now that it appears Sega is pulling a lot of Xbox support and moving it to PS2 while keeping their GC support about the same.

So on CNN they just had even more footage of Mario Kart, and this batch was even better!  One of the cooler things about it was  MILD SPOILER WARNING that Baby Mario picked up a powerup that could be aimed that sent a huge Chain Chomp across the track to chew on everybody.  Funny stuff.

Probably be some links to the movie up here pretty soon.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo makes PAC-MAN GBA/Gamecube title
« on: May 10, 2003, 12:08:52 PM »
It sounds like a really fun little multiplayer game, but I wouldn't pay full price for that.

It's cool that they have those GBa downloadables on the GC demo disc that's coming out, and this would be a nice addition to that.  I imagine you could fit all of Pac Man in the GBA's memory, so this would be a GREAT demo disc extra, and with a Mario Party type cross platform game it'd fit really well, too.  We'll see what they do with it.

Nintendo Gaming / Anyone else find it strange ... MGS3
« on: May 05, 2003, 05:09:11 PM »
Yeah, I've been kind of guessing that Silicon Knights has been borrowing some Konami MGS team members to help them work on Twin Snake, and when they're done with that they'll take the knowledge of those tools (and the engine used to make TS) to create MGS3 for GC I'm speculating, kind of like how the PS2 version of Splinter Cell was coded from the ground up.

I hope this is the plan, because that would be super sweet.

Oh, I don't know... Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicle, MGS:Twin Snake, Rogue Squadron 3, Mario Kart Double Dash, FZero, Viewtiful Joe, and Pikmin 2 will ALL have been released before Halo 2 or Fable, and most (if not all) of these titles will be million+ sellers.

Not too worried about Nintendo's lineup.

As far as 2004 goes, Resident Evil 4 is the big gun, along with Mario 128 and possibly Killer 7.

NWR Feedback / Dear PGC staffers,
« on: May 03, 2003, 10:00:58 AM »
Please stop running popups that install intrusive software on people's computers.  I understand your need to make money to keep this site running, and I understand some companies (especially Gator) pay top dollar to have their popups with "innocuous" software on your site.  However, these companies use business tactics that are very misleading, frustrating to the user, and if you install their software, cause system instability and are a violation of the user's privacy, tracking sites visited and creating extra popups based on that.

I try whenever possible to support independent sites like this one, making sure to click through on things I'm interested in, for example, whenever I browse an import site, it usually starts from here or a similar site.  However, I'm NOT interested in Gator "time management tools", any doubleclick.net offer, or similar things.  Most of the people who browse this site won't be as well.  Since I often browse this site and it's forums at work like many people, I can't really install a popup blocker either.

Thanks for listening.

Nintendo Gaming / Midway losses, Blames Nintendo- less support
« on: May 01, 2003, 05:40:28 PM »
Midway can quit their whining and deliver content that's worth buying.  They can also make sure their titles are properly distributed.  The only Midway title I bought just so happened to be MKA last year, and it was like pulling teeth just to get my hands on it.  Everything else they released last year that wasn't a sports title did poorly with reviewers, and was poor, and therefore they can blame themselves.

I'm sick and tired of hearing about companies blaming Nintendo for their failures when all they do is release poorly done ports of titles that weren't all that great to begin with, often really late, and then don't bother to distribute them properly.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo has something even bigger...
« on: April 25, 2003, 07:05:24 PM »
*Puts on speculation cap and xray glasses, pulls out a beer...

Honestly, I think Nintendo has TONS more stuff they're showing off at E3.  I'm imagining we'll get to see Mario 128, Metroid Prime 2 (although I doubt these will be playable), and maybe 4 or 5 other titles of their own not already mentioned, not to mention all the third party stuff.  Hell, if Nintendo reveals information just strictly for the stuff they have announced but haven't given much details on, their E3 lineup will be EXTREMELY formidable.  Think about Metal Gear:Twin Snake, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicle, Viewtiful Joe, Killer 7, Dead Phoenix, Too Human, Rogue Squadron 3, Starfox Armada, FZero, Sonic Hero, Billy Hatcher, Virtua Fighter Quest, Skies of Arcadia 2, Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos, Gt Cube, Too Human, Resident Evil 4, Unity, Climax's FPS, Project Zero and some others I'm sure I'm forgetting their E3 will be way stronger than last year just with that, even if half of it is just video.

There's going to be a line halfway across the entire convention center just for Mario Kart Double Dash, especially if they demonstrate 8 player system link on a couple big HDTVs.  As much as it doesn't sound that exciting on paper, the new Mario Kart title is HUGE by itself.

Nintendo doesn't have squat to worry about at E3 this year, even if they don't announce anything.

Do they still have even more surprises?  Oh yeah, definitely.  We know there will be one new franchise announcement from Nintendo themselves, and who knows whatever other third party stuff... should be awesome.

Nintendo Gaming / RSIII : I don't understand!
« on: April 24, 2003, 06:18:12 PM »
According to EGM, the entirety of RSII will be included in RSIII, but only for splitscreen multiplayer.  therefore, if you still want to play those levels in single player, you'll need to hold on to the original.

From EGM's quote, it sounds like it's only the original.

Nintendo Gaming / Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron III CONFIRMED
« on: April 22, 2003, 02:59:49 PM »
Yeah, some the new shots are super pretty, although some of the regular "On foot" character models definitely are in need of some massaging/general cleaning up.  I'm sure they'll take care of that before it ships though.

Still, a lot of the new features they're showing off in the screenshots look like exactly what I wanted them to do with the series so color me happy overall.  Can't wait to play this shizzy.

They're fake.  That's a photoshop filter to make it look like a scan.  If you look at the pixel edges around the text you can tell.  It's pretty obvious, especially in the top shot.

I got Burnout 2 and it's a really solid game.  Definitely worth the purchase.

I had Spinter Cell on Xbox, didn't like it.  Too much artificial difficulty.

I definitely hear you guys about the third party crap.  I believe I've posted some fairly lengthy rants about this in fact.
