I still see plenty of Wii Us in stock everywhere (include MK8 bundles). I'm going to wager this will be a short boom in sales, unfortunately.

That makes sense for a higher attach rate at launch, since there were tons of people that bought a Wii U with Wii Sports and never bought another game (including senior centers, rehab facilities, etc.). We'll have to see a full month's worth of sales before we can really make any type of judgment though.

NPDs!
http://venturebeat.com/2014/06/16/may-2014-npd-ps4-xbox-one-watch-dogs-and-mario-kart-8-fuel-industry-wide-surge/

Quote
Gamers spent $586 million on new physical gaming software and hardware in May, according to industry-tracking research firm The NPD Group. That is up 52 percent from $387 million in 2013. Major multiplatform releases like the ope-world Watch Dogs and major exclusives like Mario Kart 8 were big contributors to the strong performance. This is a good sign for everyone making games as it reveals that U.S. consumers can sustain spending at high levels well beyond the holidays, when the year’s biggest blockbusters and news systems go on sale.

Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the two new consoles from Microsoft and Sony, are also continuing to sell well. Hardware generated $187 million in May. That’s up 95 percent year-over-year compared to May 2013′s $96 million.

Consumers spent $274 million on new physical games at retail in May. That’s up 57 percent from $175 million last year. This is one of the biggest months in a while as those who already own devices are now rushing out to get experiences for their new machines.

1. Watch Dogs (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PlayStation 3, PC)
2. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
3. MLB 14: The Show (PS4, PS3, Vita)
4. Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
5. Minecraft (360, PS3)
6. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, 3DS, Wii U)
7. NBA 2K14 (360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, PC)
8. Titanfall (360, Xbox One, PC)
9. Kirby: Triple Deluxe (3DS)
10. Call of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, PC, Wii U)

A pleasant surprise to see Kirby peek in there.

I'm happy for Wolfenstein: The New Order charting at #4. No one was giving that game the time of day before release, including myself. But while I haven't played as much of that game as I'd like, it's an excellently-crafted Single-player FPS the likes of which we haven't seen in a long time.

NPD doesn't include Digital Downloads or Hardware bundles.  Curious if those numbers were included, where MK8 would be on the chart vs. WD.

Well, considering Nintendo was quoting 1 million in sales worldwide for Mario Kart (including digital) that opening weekend and Ubisoft was quoting 4 million sales worldwide (including digital) for Watch Dogs, I don't think it would have made any difference in their respective rankings.  Hell, IIRC Ubisoft said that half of those 4 million Watch Dogs sales were on the PS4 alone so Watch Dogs probably would've won the Single SKU rankings, too.

June 18, 2014, the day the Vita official died.  Sony is throwing in the towel and washing its hands with the poor little Vita.  Where did they go wrong?

1.  That whole memory card issue, pissed off more people at the gate which squandered the intial installer base.
2.  Relieved to much on third parties games but didn't keep an eye out for quality, I'm looking at you CoD and Asssassin's Creed,
3.  Should've tried harder to get the sequels to the games that fans wanted, namely God of War, GTA Stories, and Capcom's Monsterhunter.

Eh, it's not dead. Sony's just cutting back support and changing the direction of it. Makes me wonder though if Sony will make a successor for Vita or if they will just let the portable idea ride off into the sunset slowly with the Vita.

They said fewer games not no more games. Of course, they could just be saying that to keep the Vita owners from freaking out while planning to stop making anymore at all. If they are still making games and supporting it, then I'd say that it isn't dead yet. It sounds like it could be what the Wii was for the last 2 years of its life though.

Mario kart should hit 600k by month's end in Japan and 2 mil worldwide. Couple that with Christmas and Mk8 might hit 4mil  by years end, solid numbers for a dead console in a dead country.

Shame about Vita. Very nice piece of technology but extremely underused and misunderstood by Sony and co. Which is ironc since they created the console.

Sony failing in the attempts to push yet another proprietary storage format....
wuuuuuut!!!! You don't say.

I'm beginning to think they will never learn. So many people were HYPED over Vita, saying that it would wipe the floor with the 3DS.... until they saw the memory cards and the pricing for them.
You could hear the HYPE deflate like a wet balloon.
