TalkBack / Re: Leak Debunker: February 2016 Edition

With Pokémon Rainbow (especially if Dave comes back and says its an MMO), I finally believe that Dave is the kind of guy who would make a bunch of safe claims (UE4, Final Fantasy, Zelda cross-gen release) so he could make an outrageous claim with a "track record" behind him.  This profile will probably drop off the face of the planet come E3 or a genuine mainline Pokémon announcement.

Just wanted to correct Johnny on something, if he's still even going to see this (It's been 9 months).

You stated that Spider-Man was one of Jack Kirby's designs.  Actually, that was "Sturdy" Steve Ditko's debut super-hero design.  Stan wanted Jack to design Spider-Man, but his trademark Captain America-style physiques didn't fit what Stan was going for.  That's when Steve provided a more limber, youthful figure that became the final character.

BTW, this was my first exposure to the Outrun songs.  What a trip home that made for!

Abridged Version of this Video:

Those elements people keep reacting poorly to in the Star Fox franchise?  They're the result of ideas implemented in Star Fox 2.  This is more or less Nintendo's mental space when it comes to the series, at least when they've got a good handle on the hardware to explore said ideas.

Fans reacted best to the on-rails and all-range in-ship content.  Yes, they want "that in HD."  It's the minority of what the series has offered, but it's what they responded best to in the first place.  What makes 64 work so well is a focus on that on-rails/all-range gameplay with a couple deviations fans have dubbed "gimmick levels."  If Zero hopes to succeed with that segment of the customer base, the balance of content type in 64 is the aspect they should most be aiming to emulate.

BTW, great.  Now I want Mother 3 AND Star Fox 2 to get the Earthbound Beginnings treatment.

Yes, Mickey Mouse.  A character Disney didn't give a dedicated short/film for 3 decades.  I know that's a common comparison for Nintendo using a lot of Mario, but even Disney knew the value of not overdepending on their mascot.

Yes, Splatoon is not Nintendo's 1st new IP since Pikmin.  That's a fact.

However, let's consider what people really mean when they say otherwise:  Both games are full-priced retail games, they're both developed internally at Nintendo proper (Not HAL/Intelligent Systems, etc), they both appeal to the "core userbase," and they both got plenty of public attention.

Of the other IPs introduced by Nintendo, what other IP can check off all these boxes?  The closest candidate to achieve this is the Wii/Mii brand that Miitomo is based around, but it doesn't have the same appeal to that "core" audience.  Most players don't even recognize it as a franchise.  The same can be said for their health-based games like Brain Training.  The eShop games, like Pushmo, also come close but don't have the same exposure or take up the shelf space a "AAA franchise" would.  They're also not games that would heavily circulate in E3 conversation.

In short, when someone says they want a New Nintendo IP, they're typically looking for a full-priced, retail game, internally developed by whatever the equivelent of an EAD studio is now, has appeal to the "core" player and gets a considerable E3 presence.  Up to Splatoon, Pikmin was their last project to accomplish all of this.

So both Jon and James are wrong.  Miyamoto's underwear is gold, like his Mii's pants.

Regarding Link's voice, I've loosened my position in the last week or so.  I used to say "absolutely not" for all the usual reasons mentioned.  However, I now believe that having him speak incredibly rarely (I'm talking Samurai Jack levels of rare speech) might work.  It would still play to his silent nature while still giving him some lines.

TalkBack / Re: The Legend of Zelda Wii U Release Date Pool
« on: February 11, 2016, 12:20:36 AM »
I'm betting on an October date, given an NX launch in November.  It will launch within a couple weeks of Pokémon Z, either before or after (likely after).  If I had to pick a date, I'm going with October 27th (my rupees are on a Thursday).  I guess that makes my Pokémon guess October 13.  Zelda will have a 2-word subtitle (not counting "the").

My follow-up guess for half-credit is September 22.  This would give Zelda another month ahead of the NX.

TalkBack / Re: Metroid: Zero Mission Review Revisit
« on: February 11, 2016, 12:08:38 AM »
This game should absolutely be everyone's first Metroid from here on.

That said, Super is the mandatory follow-up for me.  Mechanically, I see Zero Mission as the accessible automatic car while Super handles like a stick shift.  The controls in Super are much more a case of "getting good" at them, and there's a certain reward sensation to mastering them.  It also offers the bigger adventure.  However, one might find themselves playing Zero Mission more frequently.  Too, the benefits of easy GBA controls are highly appreciated.  I guess it's just a matter of preference, and it takes playing both to figure it out.

For the record, the third game can be Prime, Fusion or 2, depending on where the player wants to go from there.

Universal Citywalk in Hollywood/Studio City and Orlando makes the most sense as far as opening other Nintendo stores.  It's still a focused few locations, those locations get a healthy amount of traffic, and they can build stores to the scale of New York's there.  Really, I'm expecting to hear to the words "Nintendo LA" and "Nintendo OL" announced before the year is out.

TalkBack / Re: Our 2016 Nintendo Predictions
« on: January 28, 2016, 04:35:08 AM »
@Nickmitch  As I recall, Nintendo will be one part of a larger video game area with multiple properties.

As for that resulting in a Video Game-themed 3rd Park, that rests on whether or not Universal can acquire the land involved.  It's looking likely, but nothing's been confirmed officially as of yet.  If they don't get the land involved, this may result in repurposing one of the Islands of Adventure, but that's a worst case scenario.  They'll likely get the land for the video game park, water park and whatever else they do in the future.

http://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/blog/2015/12/450-acre-land-grab-the-remedy-for-universal.html

Speaking of land expansion, the lower lot expansion at Universal Studios Hollywood is also something of interest.  I'd expect at least a couple of the Orlando rides to make an appearance there, and my money is on at least one of them being a Nintendo attraction.  The soon to be torn down Revenge of the Mummy might be a prime spot for a Zelda indoor ride, right across from Jurassic Park.  Then again, a Mario Kart ride would pose as a perfect rival to California Adventure's Radiator Springs Racers, much like what Back to the Future was to Star Tours.  There are possibilities, to be sure.

Touching on the Nintendo store expansion idea, I'm predicting both the Hollywood and Orlando Universal Citywalks will get a Nintendo store on the scale of New York's.  They will be named Nintendo LA and Nintendo OL.

TalkBack / Re: Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam (3DS) Review
« on: January 25, 2016, 05:31:06 AM »
"Witty dialogue" is exactly what I was hoping to hear.  The first review I saw said the game didn't even have that, but clearly they didn't know what they were talking about (as the majority seems to agree with you).  While I am disappointed that the Paper Mario world doesn't factor much into the battle mechanics and that the story is so basic, I'll ultimately be fine with solid gameplay and funny lines here and there.

Hopefully this Paper Mario for Wii U actually gets announced and that series can get some proper representation again.

TalkBack / Re: Market Research Surveys Aren’t Leaking the NX
« on: January 20, 2016, 03:36:07 PM »
Given the multiple forms the "NX" is presented in via this survey, along with things like the PS4 and Xbox One not having disc drives, there's really nothing substantial that can be drawn from this survey (except maybe an interest in a subscription service, which is consistently brought up).  It's just asking customers things like "Would this package still be worthwhile without a certain feature?" or "How much storage would you like the NX to have?"

Too, as Emily Rogers put it, "Nobody said the survey was commissioned by Nintendo."

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 458: Auguratio Ex Japonicum
« on: January 14, 2016, 05:57:06 PM »
Since the episode didn't really go into the Nintendo-Universal deal regarding their part in the video games attractions, here's my takes.

This is all based around the following assumption:  Rather than become a whole 3rd park in Orlando, one of the Islands of Adventure will be replaced with a Video Game island.  Hollywood, meanwhile, will get the highlight attractions as part of the lower lot expansion.

1.  Both Universal Citywalks will be getting their own Nintendo store, Nintendo LA and Nintendo OL.  The new name of their New York location, Nintendo NY, leads me to believe they're planning this kind of expansion.
2.  Their flagship ride will be a Legend of Zelda indoor dungeon ride, using the tech from Harry Potter & the Forbidden Journey.  In Hollywood it will be built over the soon to be former site of Revenge of the Mummy.
3.  A Mario Kart ride will be made to compete with Radiator Springs Racers at Disney's California Adventure (and by extension Test Track at EPCOT).  Basically this is to that ride what Back to the Future was to Star Tours.  Side Prediction:  It will get a Luigi's Mansion theme during Halloween Horror Nights.
4.  A Fire Emblem live stunt show will open at both parks.
5.  A Pikmin 3D attraction will open exclusively at Islands of Adventure.
6.  Some Pokémon attraction, though I wouldn't even begin to guess what it is.
7.  In-Park restaurant themed after Kirby and/or Yoshi.  Marvel Mania has made Universal wary to try similar themed restaurants on the Citywalk, so it will be in-park.

Looks like Greg's prediction came true early.

Listening to Jose's spot, I got to the comments on Club Nintendo and felt the need to weigh in.

I love the fact that Nintendo offered surveys as a direct line to communicate our opinions on their products and practices.  Will everyone want to fill them out, though?  No.  Do I want to fill it out every single time?  Not really.  But do I want feedback gone entirely?  Certainly not.  However, the existence of Miiverse may negate the need for a separate survey entirely.  Their goal is to collect opinions from the owners of a certain game, and now each game has its own Miiverse community.  They have their line, and there's no need to get My Nintendo involved in that particular Club Nintendo way.  Someone like Jose can now be free to conveniently "just get their thing," and it doesn't come at the kind of cost it could have.

Two things I'm expecting right off the bat:

1.  Word of the Badge app's release in North America.
2.  A final name and release date for Project Shield, seeing as it was listed for 2015 as recently as Late-October.

Since the game is being build in Unity, combined with the demand, I'd say Wii U is a safe bet as a platform for this game.

1.  The first part is now available on the podcast feed.
2.  I got to the part about further animated Nintendo content, and one name that keeps popping up in relation to this is Star Fox.  The cast and space exploration element makes it a great fit for at least an episodic series.  A purist might make it marionettes, of course. ;)
Mother/Earthbound came up, and if that were animated I think the Popeye Test Animation and the trailer for the upcoming Peanuts movie are the template I would like them to take with this hypothetical CG Earthbound film/show.

I had a lot of fun with the demo, and I'll absolutely check out the final product not only to show support but because it gives me the same rush a Panzer Dragoon or Metal Slug does.  A fine quality to have, indeed.

On the touch controls, while I wouldn't recommend it exclusively I do think choosing it at the menu is a good idea.  Why?  Because that control scheme also allows the player to switch instantly to button controls.  There's certain quick-time moments where touching felt intuitive, so being able to fluidly switch to it and then right back to the comfort of button clicks is a great plus.
