I agree, everyone is amazed by the Wii. That's why I've decided to join the line of people waiting at Target in order to get their Wii's first the night before this thing hits. I'm hoping Nintendo doesn't gimp the production of the Wii, which I doubt it will. Either way, check this out:

That's what I'm expecting the night of the launch. Or at least, people running towards it during Christmas

Nintendo Gaming / Which Wii Games Has Nintendo Already Sold You On?
« on: May 11, 2006, 07:28:16 AM »
I know this is a fanboyish thread, but hey, Nintendo hasn't had this much good press for quite awhile. I decided, just to add fuel to the fire of the hype machine, ask all of you which games has Nintendo/3rd parties already sold you on for the Wii (if any)?

My List:

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - We have been waiting for this game forever.
Super Mario Galaxy - Seems to be a true sucessor to Mario 64. That's enough to be amazing.
Metriod Prime 3: Corruption - Judging by seeing people play it at e3, this game looks INTENSE.
Red Steel - Sword fighting looks superb.
Wii Sports - Seems to be a extremely fun party game I can play with my parents.

I'm not there and I'm not sure how this new controller works, but I'm assuming all those controllers on the same controller 1 play setting, is more than likely confusing the wiimote, especially given Nintendo's tradition of making wireless controllers that have an amazing range.

I kind of only half agree. The epic Mario 64-type Mario games have always been a Gamer's Game. Let the new Super Mario Brothers series deal with casual gamers, I say.

This game does indeed sound awesome.

My guess would be they don't want to target non-gamers at first, but rather, establish a core audience to get a consistant feed of money until they can come up with good appealing ideas for grandparents.

FYI, I don't care, I just wanted a good first person shooter on my DS. If they used Metriod as a vehicle for that, so be it.

EDIT: Also, you take how Nintendo treats obviously little filler games way too seriously.

A few years ago I would have trusted Nintendo to never screw up a Zelda game.  But in the last few years they've demonstrated to me that Nintendo IPs don't mean anything anymore and that they just see them as "brandnames" to throw on the box for any old game to help it sell.  Metroid wasn't spared so I see no reason why Zelda would be.

What do you mean past few years?

I already know what you are going to say, yeah, those aren't Nintendo games. But you should expect, depending on how much effort they put into each game, how good it's going to be.

I used to believe that Metroid would never see a multiplayer focused game, and here we are...

I just lost confidence on Nintendo, I dont blindly believe in them anymore, so I have to vent my doubts on their decisions, only hoping I will have to eat my words, because Ill gladly do it.

OH NO, Nintendo released a multiplayer focused Metriod game and people for the most part liked it! How terrible.

I guess I'm really down on the name.  Which is really shallow.  But we get made fun of enough for being Nintendo fans.  Now we're...Wii fans.  I dunno.  Nintendo's really going to have to amaze me tomorrow if they want me to purchase a Wii.

If you are playing games based on what other people think of you, you are playing games for the wrong reason.

It wasn't ready to go, but it was still obviously delayed for the Wii. They didn't need six months to debug the thing.

DAMN I need a confirmation now about the status of the GC game...

Stop complaining about things that haven't even been solidified yet. I'm tired of hearing you complain about stuff that doesn't matter. The aiming of the sling shot? Who cares, that was never a major point in the game anyway. I hated aiming the sling shot the traditional way. Also, the gameplay has to change on the Wii. It just has to. You know that once you actually hear people playing this, they are going to love it. And you will too, I'm betting. Nintendo did A LOT of research and development on this controller, and I'm willing to bet with the extra 6 months they were given, they were able to perfect the controlls.

Okay, this time I'm not making it up. The other day I told my mom the name of the new Nintendo system, she was like "Alright, that sounds kinda weird," the important thing is, the other day she proved my point about the name being memorable. Then a couple of days later she was like "When does that new Nintendo thing come out, you know, that 'Weeeeeeeee' thing." This is amazing as my mom never get's the names of consoles right. She called my GameCube an Xbox hundreds of times. The N64 and SNES were simply called "Nintendo."

My girlfriend was excited about the Wii, and still is. She simply said that it's a weird name. Nothing good or bad about it, just weird.

Yes, I slept over it, I repeated in my head a thousand times already, I hate the name even more now than I did when I first saw it.

For people not in the know, you'd have to explain the name anyways. To be honnest, GameCube is way worse for Nintendo because it was too easily confused with the Xbox. Infact, to many people who don't play games, GameCube and Xbox are one in the same. So having a name that sets them apart from the rest is going to help them out in this respect.

I'm enjoying that, at least.  Nintendo knows fun.

But when you're laughing AT them and not WITH them, do you know what that makes Nintendo?

That's right: the next Starwars kid.

Calm down.. The reason why people were laughing at the starwars kid is because the movie was awful, not because the kid's name was phallic. It's not like this is going to make people side against Nintendo, it's just a name. People will side against Nintendo if the games are awful. That's the only factor.

i think its short, sweet, and stylish... i think the only thing i'm not looking forward to are the constant moans of people.. or standing and listening to people laughing at your local electronics outlet. on that note.. i think nintendo did make a bad choice.

it LOOKS a lot cooler than it sounds.

Anyway you look at it, any angle you take with it, it's infectous. I like it because it can go so many ways. You can make jokes out of it, you can make communal statements about it, and it's less text you have to type. Wii. Love it or hate it, we are creating an environment perfect for a new unique product.

Parent #1(Dad): I told him that Nintendo's next console is going to be officially called the "Nintendo Wii" and he began to convolse uncontrollably. I shook him and he began to yell, "Why cruel God, WHY?!?!?!?!?" He then fell to his knees, and pushed his fingers into his eyes until blood started pouring from his eyes.

Parent #2(Mom): She came up to me and asked why Dad was yelling, and then I told her that Nintendo's next console is going to be called "Nintendo Wii," after she learned of this, she preformed ritualistic suicide.

Parent #3(Frenchy McFrencherson): I told him about the name and he really liked it.

Okay,  I'm lying guys. I didn't really tell my parents anything.

No I like the name. The more and more I watch people's reaction, I'm seeing that it's going to stick more and more. It has appeal to crowd that doesn't really play games because the word has no definition yet, so Nintendo is free to define it themselves. It has appeal to us XTREME GAMERS because we get to make phallic jokes. See, win win situation 8-)

At least "Revolution" immediately presents the potential buyer with an image of what the console aims to accomplish.

No it doesn't! 'Revolution' has nothing to do with motion sensing. It evokes other things and therefore distracts from what the Wii actually does.

I'll have to agree with you on that one, the concept of a Revolution may only be popular in the United States, where we have romanticized ideologies on the word.

That marketing doesn't always get it right, did you read my post?  No.

It's hilarious how you can say these things without looking at Nintendo's previous history of name making. A history of name making that is full of abstractions no one really fully understands. Let's take a look, shall we?

Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom - What the hell is a Nintendo and what the hell is a Famicom?
Super Nintendo / Super Famicom - Super? This name screams corn.
Gameboy - Alright, we have a better idea of what the thing does, but, Gameboy? Common! HOW CHILDISH ZOMG.
Nintendo 64 - 64? Uhhh, the first thing you want to avoid in names is strange abstractions, by the logic of people that hate the Wii name.
GameCube - Now we a name that gives us a good idea of what it does and what it is. Good thing the name of this particular product lead to it's great sucess, right?
Gameboy Advance - Childish advancement.
Nintendo DS - Terrible name, sounds like what they would name a printer or something.

The name lacks appeal, urine jokes aside. Now add the jokes, and is a terrible name, they are inmature and stupid of course, but thats not going to fix the image the name carries.

I really need some info on games to get past this, E3 cant come soon enough!

I was making the point that your comparison has nothing to do with my arugement. I was arguing that, in the world or marketing, the quality of something doesn't matter, just so long as it's easy to remember. If you study marketing at all, you come to realize that even if, say, a commercial is awfully annoying, and you just want to throw something at the TV, it's still done it's job of injecting the given product into your mind.

"nigg4" is easy to remember, "f4g" is even easier to remember, will you name a product like that? will you really? yes Im exagerating of course, Wii isnt as bad as those, but I think you get my point

(added numbers because it didn't make much sense with the formating)

Im still trying to wrap my head around the name,

That is a dumb comparison because no one finds the word Wii offensive, whereas many people find the words nigga and fag extremely offensive. Maybe they might find it immature because they are dumb enough to make the connection of the sound "Wii" and urine jokes, but really, guys, come on. Wii grew out of those long ago. Everyone wont care in a month anyways, but they sure will remember it, therefor it has done it's job quite Wiill.

Wow, that's different. Anyhow, I'm not disappointed in the name, so much as the community reaction here. Let me lay down a fact about marketing for you guys: it doesn't matter if the name is terrible, irritating, and stupid. The most important part about it is that it's easy to remember. If it gets any attention at all, it's done it's job extremely well.

But I guess that doesn't matter just so long as you look extremely manly to everyone, right?
