TalkBack / Re: Call of Duty: Black Ops Review
« on: March 17, 2011, 02:20:01 PM »
I didn't actually read the review because I have no interest in the game, but I did read the above wall of text.  My only comment is that it is the developer's responsibility to work within the limits of the hardware, and that if the game doesn't seem to work well on a particular device that is the fault of the software.  n-Space didn't make this game and then tell Nintendo to design the DS around it; it's the other way around.  There are many other games in the same genre that the author seems to think work better on the DS, so he has every right to complain about the difficulty of the controls and the UI.

An argument could be made about his online connection problems being on his end, but as I understand it other games work well for him while this one does not.  This review is about his personal experience with the game and what he experienced was a terrible online mode.  Do you expect him to praise a multiplayer mode that didn't work because in theory it should be great?  Get real.

And at least Dan had the decency to disclose his position at n-Space.

TalkBack / Re: 3DS May Be Brickable if Flash Cards Used
« on: March 10, 2011, 07:49:04 PM »
I think people (myself included) have read a little too much into this but unfortunately it will be a while until we know the truth behind their plans.  We'll at least have to wait until the first firmware update to find out if they are actively bricking devices, and even long after then there will always be a seed of doubt.

To me it is an issue of consumer rights and anyone who agrees with this practice because it helps prevents piracy is foolish.  Yes, these cards can be used illegally but that it not their only purpose.  You know what else can be used illegally?  Your computer.  A gun.  A boxcutter.  A pencil.  I realize the analogy isn't perfect (although the computer example is pretty apt), but the fact is that you shouldn't punish people who buy these cards.  You should only punish people who buy these cards and use them to pirate games.

You could also argue that using a flash card to run alternative firmware, even for the purpose of innocent home brew, is against Nintendo's terms of service.  However that is also an issue of consumer rights, namely the right to actually own your freaking hardware and not have it on extended loan from Nintendo.  The Library of Congress added an exception to the DMCA for jailbreaking iPhones, how is this any different?

It's perfectly legal for you to jailbreak an ipod (an argument which was upheld in court), and I think it should be legal for you to jailbreak a 3DS.  I hate that Nintendo plans to force updates and brick systems.  THAT should be illegal, not running different firmware.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: E3 2011 Predictions
« on: March 09, 2011, 10:55:35 PM »
I have been predicting Pikmin 3 for years now and it never happened, so this year I predict that there's no way it will happen in hopes that it actually does.

But seriously I don't think it will happen, and if it does I want it to be for the 3DS.

TalkBack / Re: 3DS Launch Game Previews
« on: March 09, 2011, 05:23:39 PM »
The only launch game I'm getting is Pilotwings and even though it looks to shame the great name of Piltowings I'm sure it will still be fun.  I've also ordered Radiant Historia which according to Amazon will get here around when the 3DS launches (supply issues) so I'll have some good games to hold me over until E3.  Plus I still have a backlog of DS games...I can't play anything that requires the L or R buttons at the moment...

I just realized how awesome minish cap would be if it were remade in 3D.  That would bring tears of joy to my eyes.

EA is offering 40% off Dead Space 2 plus free shipping through their website when you use the promo code d3adsp8ce21.
Didn't work for me, tells me it's an invalid promo code.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo EAD Tokyo Working on 3DS Super Mario Title
« on: March 03, 2011, 11:30:27 PM »
They are going to call it

New Super Mario 3D.

And it is going to be a spiritual successor to Super Mario 3, but it is going to be a completely 3D game.  They are going to do completely retro design Mario game, but it is going to be in 3D.

I expect, very tightly designed 3D levels that are somewhere between a 3D world, and the straight line worlds of the original Mario series.  That is my prediction.

Yeah but will it be in 3D? You weren't clear about that.

« on: February 22, 2011, 12:55:12 PM »
$40 a game for only Wuhu Island?  No way.  This is not the Pilotwings I wanted!  This isn't a confirmation but at this point I'm 90% sure there won't be any other areas....and Pilotwings is the only launch game I'm interested in...

Perhaps I'll cancel my preorder.

When I was a kid I desperately wanted to live in Australia...but then I learned about their terrible Internet, outrageously overpriced games, and grotesque baby-eating spiders.

Plus Steel Diver is a new IP and Pilot Wings is a franchise thats been ignored for 15 years.  We always complain Nintendo should bring back old stuff and make new IPs.  Time to put $ where you mouth is.  I will.

I've been begging for a new Pilotwings game for years but Pilotwings Resort isn't exactly what I had in mind.  I will still probably get it but I can't help but feel disappointed in the direction the game seems to be heading...

There isn't a portable product out there that doesn't go through that same process.  The GB, GBA, DS, PSP, iPod, iPhone did/do this...hell, the minute you buy ANY cell phone it's immediately outdated.  Even most consoles go through major hardware revisions.  Why waste time waiting for this "true" version that will fix all of the problems you admitted didn't bother you?  And after that there might be a third version, so you definitely shouldn't buy the second one!  It never ends.

If you have legitimate complaints about the 3DS or think that there are some important features they might add later on then you have reason to wait.  Otherwise it's just silly.

That said I think there are TONS of legitimate complaints that can be made about the product so I wouldn't blame anyone if they didn't buy one at launch.  I think it's just silly to wait for a mystery product at some mystery point in the future at a mystery price with mystery features that you may or may not want.  Just get it and have fun!

Originally I shared the opinion that the console is too expensive, the games are disappointing, and the battery life is terrible...and I still feel that way. However, I honestly can't see myself waiting long enough for an update or price drop. I know I will cave, so there's no point in losing a few months of play time for no reason. The e-Shop and great games will come before a price drop, and my iPod has taught me how to live with short battery life. Besides there will probably be a third party solution to that problem and if it really turns out to be a hassle extra batteries are usually pretty cheap.  I predict I'll just learn to live with it though.

Edit: I should mention that if the games are all $40-50 that will likely dissuade me. It might be foolish but I'm still hoping for $30-40. Most DS games were $30 at launch and a $20 increase seems unreasonable.

I got your joke, TurdFurgy, and I thought it was funny.

The price will be as high as the battery life is low.

So in other words, you think it will actually cost less than the 3DS?   :P:

Haha, well if the NGP's average battery life lasts longer than the 3DS's in a real world scenario I will eat my left foot.  I simply don't believe it.  I guess that's being way too presumptuous at this point, but since this is the internet and no one cares if I'm wrong I'll say it loud and proud!

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Is it possible with 3D gaming on a smartphone?
« on: January 27, 2011, 11:11:44 AM »
I see it happening, probably in two iPhone/iPod iterations from Apple depending on the success of the 3DS.  3D video would look great even if games don't, and even so many games simply use virtual buttons that float above the screen.  With 3D enabled they would just...float more.  I don't see it being a problem....heck, I don't see it being a problem even for game that DON'T use the virtual button method, as long as the user-controlled images are on the topmost "layer" of depth.  It might be weird at first, but not insurmountable.

In any case, if 3D movies continue to be popular I can definitely see Apple wanting to sell them on iTunes, which would require some sort of device to play them.  They won't let Nintendo have exclusive control over glasses-free 3D movies if that turns out to be something consumers want.  And if it isn't, Apple will MAKE it something consumers want because somehow they know how to do that.

TalkBack / Re: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX Impressions

For once I have to agree with Ian; Link's Awakening is my favorite game of all time.  I really have nothing to add that hasn't been said...I just feel this strange urge to express my opinion whenever people are talking about this game.  It's just so perfect.

On the subject of LA, here is an OC Remix album based on the game's soundtrack.  I have yet to give it a proper listen but I know there's a lot of talent over at OC Remix so I suspect it's pretty good.  If nothing else it'll provide some nostalgia.

TalkBack / Re: Gamestop Pricing 3DS Games Between $40 and $50
« on: January 24, 2011, 10:36:28 PM »
Nothing will make me choose an iPod over 3DS faster than high game prices.  Putting up with abysmal controls and terrible battery life is a small price to pay considering the small price to play.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Chris Kohler trolls the 3DS

Most 3D movies and 3D televisions use more of a depth illusion than a "pop."  Having things jump out at you is kind of cheesy and seems to be a bit of a gimmick.  It's the kind of thing that's used at Disney World or in third rate 3D movies like My Bloody Valentine or Final Destination.  More "serious" 3D movies used depth and it looks a whole lot better, at least to me.  I don't want to sound like a 3D snob or anything because even if it IS a gimmick that's not necessarily bad and it could be tons of fun, but at the same time I know I prefer the illusion of looking into the screen.

People in Australia (or New Zealand, which for some reason I think oohhboy is from...maybe I'm just crazy) are getting screwed here.  Prices there are unreasonably, ludicrously high and importing is often the more affordable option.  Plus there's often annoying censorship or the game just never gets released.

I've only ever imported a few games but one of those was the original Band Brothers and it's my most played DS game by a long shot.  It sucks no longer having that option without resorting to illegal means, but fortunately I predict there will be easy ways around this.

General Gaming / Re: Fallout: New Vegas
« on: January 10, 2011, 11:56:48 AM »
Even if these glitches were't present, what I saw reaffirmed to me that I had no reason to play this. My main issue with Fallout 3 was its overworld, and that was clearly not addressed. It's still tiny settlements interspersed between 10 minute walks through nowt.

To be fair, the post-apocalyptic Fallout world does not lend itself to very dense overworlds, though New Vegas' overworld is significantly more spread-out than even Fallout 3's capital wasteland.

I've noticed that compared to Oblivion I had to be far more focused on my objective in Fallout 3, and even more focused than that in New Vegas.  In Oblivion I spent a lot of time just messing around in the world, while in Fallout 3 I had to have a mission in mind or I would get bored pretty fast.  In New Vegas I don't do much exploring at all, I mostly just go from mission to mission.  It makes for a different experience and I can see why a lot of people might not like that.

Are we still arguing about Mac vs PC vs Linux?  They all have their strengths and weaknesses and a mac user CAN be friends with a PC user if they really try.  Honestly the best computing experience I ever had was running Window 7, Snow Leopard, and Ubuntu on the same machine.  There was nothing I couldn't run, and between the three of them there were tons of awesome free programs to do anything I wanted to do.

I've been playing on the PC and it hasn't crashed once.  There have been two clipping issues and a few instances where VATS slowed down to a crawl but other than that it's been much more stable than Fallout 3.  I'm not saying that the game isn't a glitchy mess, just that your results may vary.  For me it's been great.
