Title: Name That Movie
Post by: ThePerm on December 21, 2016, 03:22:58 AM
This game is really simple, name a movie based on the clues. The clues are substituting the actors names for their characters names. I'll Host. Every 2 weeks there will be a champion. You get 100 points every time someone is first to name that movie.

First movie:

Ivan Vanko and Aunt May fall in love.

name that movie.

100 Points Rygar

They may get more and more cryptic as rounds go on. Also, additional Rule. If you can find a move that isn't the intended movie, but it works: You still get 50 points.

I have not seen a Fool for Love. Kim Basinger plays a character named May. If she is an aunt in that movie(or based on the synopsis I just read, gets pregnant), Phil gets 50 points.

Next Movie.

Forest Gump's Mom and the Genie get a Divorce.

Mrs. Doubtfire

Title: Re: Name That Movie

Sally Field is the mom in that movie? Wow. I don't remember that at all. Truthfully, I only remember Robin Williams and Pierce Brosnan being in it and only saw it once years ago and didn't think it was that great. All I can remember of the mother was a lady with black hair. I was leaning towards her maybe being an Andie Dowell knockoff/lookalike but nothing was coming to me on the face or character.

I was trying to think of Robin Williams movies where he may have had a divorce since I figured I could think of more Williams movies than Field movies but Mrs. Doubtfire never even occurred to me. I had completely forgotten about it. Thus, I was leaning towards it maybe being a Williams film I'd never seen like The Fisher King or The Angriest Man in Brooklyn which may have had a divorced Williams and Field in it because I didn't know enough details on them but playing a divorced character seemed like a possibility there.

(And, yeah, I could have just gone to IMDB and quickly scanned through Fields and/or Williams movies to see what may have crossed over between their acting credits but I'm not interested in doing that with this game. If I get an answer, I want the satisfaction of it being because I legit already know the facts.)

Well, you first post of 9-1/2 weeks wasn't exactly a laugher and ThePerm treated it seriously so I thought this was also a serious post and guess. (Plus, I also contemplated whether the Genie actor might be Shaq but ruled it out so it further added to me taking your post as a serious guess since you went down a path I thought about.)

Hmm. Maybe this is why new users don't like it here and leave. You have to fit Mr. Mod's sense of humor or you're talked down to. Hmm. How interesting. There's plenty of other reasons, too, like not fitting in with the clique. Maybe this place deserves to shrivel up and die, or be a community of the same 10-15 people posting jokes and quips that the clique circle jerks to.

Now, quick, someone make fun of my tag to completely dismiss me.

Whoa, Phil! You're reading my comment all wrong. It wasn't an attempt to talk down to you. That was not my intent at all. I was just trying to clearly explain why I misunderstood that your Kazaam guess was meant as a joke and why I took it as a serious guess. That was all. When I said that 9-1/2 Weeks wasn't a laugher, I was referring to the fact that it is a drama and serious mood type of film and not a comedy. I can't think of any occasions where the film is used for a joke. Kazaam I get as a joke since that movie is often made fun of and used as a punchline. As well, Kazaam had nothing to do with the real movie answer whereas 9-1/2 Weeks had Mickey Rourke starring in it which was part of the criteria for the first answer.

With Mop it up guessing Titanic, I can tell that's a joke since it doesn't match up at all with the clues given. Since your selections did and you seemed to be addressing ThePerm's comment of the new rule where he mentioned possibly giving you 50 points for the 9-1/2 Weeks guess, I thought you were trying to play the game seriously with both your picks. I get it now. It just wasn't clear to me before and that's why I was confused about your second guess and thought you misread something.

I needed IMDB to confirm the King of Spain which was just a guess on my part.

So, did you figure it out?

I'm stumped on this one. There are a lot of actors who have played FDR and I can't think of movies with a King of Spain aside from possibly Elizabeth: The Golden Age and I've never seen that and don't know who would be playing the King of Spain in it. For some reason, the only FDR actor I can think of is Bill Murray who played him in something called Hudson on Hyde Park or a title close to that. So, now I'm just thinking of what kind of movies Bill Murray has appeared in that might feature an ancient game. Like would it be Caddyshack with golf? That doesn't feel right. So what could be an ancient game? Chess? Can't think of Bill Murray in any movies involving Chess. What else might be considered an ancient game? Maybe it can be solved that way. That's where I'm at on this current question.
Title: Re: Name That Movie
Post by: rygar on December 23, 2016, 05:58:01 AM
I hadn't heard of the second film. It seems obscure enough you'd have to be a pretty big film or art person to know it.
Title: Re: Name That Movie
Post by: ThePerm on December 23, 2016, 06:34:48 AM
This one is a little harder to google. Which I hadn't anticipated. If I had given more direct clues it might be solved right away. I have to say though, in these challenges I am more likely to favor famous actors. I don't want it to be too hard. I'd like to give hints, but that could ruin the game. If I give hints they have to be really really cryptic.
You might treat each word with a grain of salt, or maybe extra research into things might get you somewhere. Sometimes word substitution for synonyms might be helpful.
Title: Re: Name That Movie
Post by: rygar on December 23, 2016, 08:22:03 AM
I was worried I was ruining the game so I didn't offer the solution, but I was able to get the second film through google (I miswrote IMDB last night) immediately because I had a suspicion re the second actor's identity. There is a tiny hint in my edited reply to Khush, but if you can get it from that, you probably would have remembered the movie.
Title: Re: Name That Movie

It's obviously The Girl From U.N.C.L.E.
Ralph Bellamy was in an episode and he played King Phillip II of Spain in Fire Over England.
Robert Vaughn was also in an episode and he played FDR in FDR: That Man In The White House.
The "ancient game"is obviously the spy game. Spying goes WAY back.

Gawd, WAY too EASY!!

Bill Murray played FDR. Randy Quaid played King Carlos IV(King Charles IV) in Goya's Ghosts. Bowling is an ancient game. It is said early versions of bowling were played by the ancient Egyptians(and probably earlier). Surely as soon as there were balls and things to knock down there was bowling.  Also, ancient is relative. By today's standards ancient could be something 30 years old. The Flintstones bowled, and that was probably the least historically inaccurate thing on the show.

Title: Re: Name That Movie
Post by: Khushrenada on December 27, 2016, 04:02:45 AM
Hmmm. Now that is interesting. Indiana Jones would be Harrison Ford. To my knowledge, there is no other actor to portray him unless it is a trick to include whoever played Young Indiana Jones in the Last Crusade movie. The funny thing about Ford is that despite being known for Han Solo and being associated with Sci-Fi because of it, he hasn't been in a lot of Sci-Fi movies. Although the description is vague enough that it could be one of the Star Wars movies, I can't recall any of the cast being in a Hamlet movie or playing Hamlet. Blade Runner has no plot of travelling to an alien space craft. The only other thing I can think of would be Cowboys & Aliens. I'm trying to think if Daniel Craig was ever Hamlet or if I'm forgetting someone in the cast. I know they went searching for the alien base but I can't recall now if that was actually a ship or not. I think it was and they were helping Olivia Munn's character take it back or something and she left with it in the end. I can't really remember the ending. The movie wasn't that good and forgettable as my memory is proving.

Guess I'll go it with and say Cowboys & Aliens.
Title: Re: Name That Movie
Post by: rygar on December 27, 2016, 06:58:50 AM
Explorers - I admit I used IMDB a bit on this one. I figured the trick was River Phoenix in the Last Crusade. Given he died so young I thought it had to be one of his children's films, saw Explorers on the list, and knew Ethan Hawke was in it.

Second submission: Star Wars. Alec Guinness famously performed Hamlet in London's West End.

New Rule: I was not going to count stage plays, because it is difficult to verify. However, if you can point to one then you get 10 points. So far this has been a good run. This game is doable. When we get to the two week mark we'll start a Name that Movie II thread. Being that this is a first run, it is somewhat lame that I have to keep throwing up new rules. I'm sure by the end of the first run we'll have worked out the kinks.

There is a rule that says if you meet the criteria of the clue, but it's a different movie then intended then you still get 50 points.

I think you still could have got 50 points off of the Michael Douglas Path.
Poor Man's Harrison Ford- Michael Douglas in Jewel of the Nile or Romancing the Stone
Shrinks Down - Douglas plays Hank Pym of Ant-man with shrinking tech like Innerspace
Put inside an Amigo -I don't know if Hank Pym gets inside someone, but Scott Lang does.
Amigo could be anyone really. Amigo can be used pretty generically like dude. In the case of Innerspace which the clue was derived from it meant Martin Short of three Amigos game. I'm not sure, but it's a pretty typical Ant-man tactic to get in peoples ears or mouth. But I can't find the Hank Pym scene right now to check.

moving on.

The next round will be a little different.

For once, I decided to just look up the answer. I knew Buscemi was Mr. Pink but, all too often, I know what one part of the clue is and not the final answer. I was really bugged that I couldn't think of a movie where he was a waiter. I was thinking it might have been a Adam Sandler movie I hadn't watched but was surprised the answer was Pulp Fiction. I finally got around to watching that around 6 or 7 months ago and didn't remember him in it at all although I do remember the whole 50's restaurant. Pretty diabolical choices there Perm.

I think he is listed as Buddy Holly. He is the Buddy Holly Waiter at the restaurant Mia and Vincent go to. Small part. Also, ironic considering Steve Buscemi's character on Reservoirs Dogs was so against paying tips to waitresses.

lol. Danny Devito is not in Bananas despite what gomolo.com says. It doesn't show up on IMDB or wikipedia or the oracle of bacon. It shows up on gomolo.com and french wikipedia. There is a subway hood scene, but I verified that it isn't Danny Devito. IMDB says Subway thug 2 is Anthony Caso. Video and picture analysis verifies this. The guy is taller than Danny Devito and has a different nose. He looks more like Martin Scorcese. So much so he played Scorcese on the Sopranos. Apparently, Danny Devito and Sylvester Stallone have never appeared in a movie together.

I've seen most of V and am pretty sure he isn't in it although there could potentially have been a funeral for him at the start. I started watching the movie later on one night and have yet to see the start. I am pretty sure he's around in II. IV has the death of Apollo Creed so I don't think Micky's death would be added on in that once since it might take away from the US vs Soviet theme.

Thus, I am going to guess Rocky III as the one where Micky died.

Oh my. How embarrassing on my behalf. That's what happens when one's in a funk and misreads the intent of something. I am sorry, Khush.

That is the one.

I happened upon it by chance. I had turned on the TV late on Saturday night and was on TCM which had just begun to play this movie. I came into a little late but with Margot Kidder in it and the odd plot description along De Palma directing and Bernard Hermann scoring it, I stuck around and kept watching it. De Palma definitely brings the crazy in it and it's like he's mashing up a whole bunch of Hitchcock movies into one with this film like a combination of Psycho, Rear Window, and Spellbound. Still remember it when I think of Margot Kidder so it left some kind of an impression.

Hmm So Buddy Holly is a dead Early Rock n Roll Musician known for his Nerdy Looks.
Kurt Kobain Was an Acid Bleach Grunge person with a Seattle sensibility. Known for wearing flannel. He would probably be a hipster today.

There is a fight.

Slash is in a Hair Metal band, but of the people in the band he isn't particularly hair metal. He looks like he wanted to be in some sort of Alice Cooper/Ozzy type band but ended up successful anyway. He's an original though. He is Slash-esque

So a Nerd, and a Grunge Hipster battle Slash.

The closest I have tonight is

Revenge of the Nerds?
Highlander?
Across the Universe?
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince?
Harry Potter  and the Deathly Hallows pt 2?

John Heard played Dr. Kaufman in Awakenings and Mr. McCallister with the first name Peter in Home Alone, armed with the greatest weapon during a disaster (a bar stool), still dies in the deadly storm (eaten by shark from the rising seawaters leading to the sharknados) when trying to be a hero (and save some people trapped in a vehicle by smashing the glass with his bar stool) like Ian Ziering who played Cortes in Tyrannosaurus Azteca and Testiclees in The Legend of Awesomest Maximus aided by Cassandra Scerbo who played Faye in Agoraphobia and Ambassador for Peace in Isolated.

What? Descriptions can't be jokey or sarcastic? I guess you've never seen this cinematic treasure. John Heard and the barstool you just don't forget. It really stuck out in the opening of that movie and I was secretly rooting for him to somehow stop the crisis with it for massive hilarity since him and the stool just seemed to get a bunch of focus early on.

However, the weapon is just a Mcguffin in this case. So finding the actors is more important.
