Title: E-Shop: What games are you planning on buying on Day 1?
Post by: AV on June 02, 2011, 09:11:27 PM

DSiware

3D Classics

Virtual Console: Gameboy

Special Note:
Sadly Oregon Trail and Flip Note Studio DSi games are not allowed on e-shop so I won't pick those up.
I have no clue what 3DS original download games to pick up as I don't know NA launch info yet. So what's your list?

Great websites for research:

Wario Ware Snapped, Excitebike 3D and Super Mario Land. I wonder if it will be straight up GameBoy emulation of if it will have any typed of enhancements (like Super GameBoy). SML and SML2 are freaking awesome games.

Excitebike for free and I'll call it a day.

Excitebike but is that really all the DSiWare?

I'll probably pick up Shantae as well it reminds me of  Kabuki Quantum Fighter which I enjoyed.

Def buying Shantae. Oh that company one.

Won't be day one purchases but I won't be getting paid for another week.  :P:

However, I will get Super Mario Land, Excitebike (THIS one might be day one...), Shantae, and maybe Photo Dojo.

In addition to Adolph's list, I highly recommend Dark Void Zero and Art Style: Digidrive. Also, Soul of Darkness, an old-school Castlevania clone that's apparently transferrable despite most of Gameloft's other titles not being so, and Chronos Twin, which is a really tough action platformer that makes interesting use of the dual screen functionality.

EDIT: I just checked, and I have 1300 points left on my DSi. Assuming they won't transfer over, I need to spend them before Monday. Preferably I'd go with an 800 and a 500, but I don't see any 800s that I'm interested in and don't already have. There are a couple 1000s I want, but then I'd be leaving 100 on the table, and that's assuming I find a 200 that I care about. Any suggestions?

I researched how much my list cost: About $57 before Tax. That's fairly expensive so I'm limiting the games to the more reasonable $31

Tetris Party live $5
Photo Dojo $2
Touch Solitaire $2
Shantae $12
Brain Age: $5
Mario Calculator $2
Mario Land $3
Excite Bike 3d $0

I'm assuming Mario Land is $3, and assuming DSiware prices are unchanged. I'm basically getting time waster puzzle games and one 'real game' with is shantae. I might get the other games on my list eventually but I gotta space it out some

Right now I may just pick up Shantae and my free Excitebike.    I wouldn't mind owning and replaying Super Mario Land, but I think I might wait a little bit on it.   Might pick it up when Link's Awakening comes to the store someday.  Get them both at the same time to kinda space out my purchases or such.   That's assuming Link's Awakening doesn't take too long to come to virtual console.

I'm going to get Excitebike and Super Mario Land.  I'll slowly add all the DSi Artstyle games as well.

DSiware
  • Tetris Party Live
  • Photo Dojo
  • Touch Solitaire
  • Shantae Risky's Revenge
  • Might Flip Champs
  • Brain Age Express: Sudoku
  • Art Style: Pictobits
  • Bejeweled Twist
  • Wario Ware Snapped
  • Plants vs. Zombies
  • Mario Calculator

3D Classics

  • Excitebike 3d

Virtual Console: Gameboy
  • Super Mario Land

Excellent list! I'm actually surprised that someone else liked the mario calculator as much as I did (even though I have one on my iPhone).

I traded my DSi towards the purchase of my 3DS (thus only paying $175 for the thing which has been well worth the cost imo) so I don't have any of my games to transfer over.  I'm not upset about it as I finished all the games I wanted and got my money's worth.  I will be repurchasing that mario calculator though  ;D .

It'll just be Super Mario Land and the free Excitebike for me. Most of the good DSi games like Shantae and Mighty Flip Champs I already have on my XL. I'm not transferring them over. Would rather have the larger screen.

My guess is 7pm CST, that way it'll be 9am Japan time.Who knows they might just surprise everyone and have it be ready at the same time as Wiiware / Virtual console tomorrow.

Now Nintendo did state that they will discuss what games release on Thursday on Monday to help generate 'buzz'. So we might get two updates in a week, and potentially know what will get in the near future.

Win.

I called Nintendo and asked if they had announced a time.  Lady looked it up and said all she could find was "the evening of the 6th".

It would be amazingly awesome if they went live during SONY's press conference.

I dunno.  That's all it says on Nintendo's site.

Not that I care too much, but it was a neat thing to show off to people.

Unfortunately because of finances I had to sell my DSi, deleted all my DSi store purchases when I sold it. So I guess all those games are lost and I'll need to rebuy them. Ugh.

So, even though Nintendo has record that your purchased those titles on the DSi, they will not allow you to download them for free onto your 3DS?

I don't care really. I thought the 3d is not impressive, and while I do appreciate the dogs in that video the music wasn't nothing special. Meh

Now I wonder if any aps will be available tonight? I would actually want the Wii Forcast, News channel. That would be nice to be able to cache that in the morning and have it work whenever i'm offline and update via spot pass when online again.

We've known all along.  Nintendo's been very straight forward that both units would be required to transfer titles.  It's all done locally.

Which is why it's inexcusable that save data doesn't transfer. If I were just transferring the account and had to redownload everything I might understand that.

Evening - Noun: The period of time at the end of the day, usually from about 6 p.m. to bedtime.

I want this update as bad as anyone else (or worse), but I think they've still got about an hour and a half to release it ("evening of June 6th, Pacific time")

By that definition on average it be 10 PST which would be tomorrow for most of the US.
The real problem is this is just another botched PR thing by NoA.
Title: Re: E-Shop: What games are you planning on buying on Day 1?
Post by: UncleBob on June 06, 2011, 11:39:07 PM
I don't get why it's botched.

They said "A new system update for the hand-held Nintendo 3DS system will be available in North America the evening of June 6 Pacific time." (http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/detail/6ANlirylYehWRAOQn_i0e53E0XtWMk4s)

Since "evening" is defined as being between six and "bedtime" (which 10 O'clock seems pretty normal.. although the DS is for kiddies, so perhaps it should be 7 or so), as long as they release it by 10 O'clock Pacific, I'd say they're good.

You want to say it was botched because it wasn't released at launch - okay, I'd agree.  Botched because they missed the supposed May launch?  Sure.  But botched because it's not out yet for the 6th?  Naw... not yet, at least.

I'd never use that term.  I'd be more inclined to give an estimated time or say "I'll call you tonight."  - so I can't honestly answer that question.

How late is "evening" to you?

Tetris Party live $5 - bad music but good tetris
Photo Dojo $2 - haven't played
Touch Solitaire $2 - simple and strait forward
Shantae $12 - Excellent graphics and animation
Brain Age: Sudoku $5- Strait-forward and fun
Mario Calculator $2- This is actually pretty cool and has great features for what it is
Mario Land $3- Sounds great and loves to play with green on, the border is cool
Excite Bike 3d $0----I like how the 3d graphics looks but disappointed how you can't trade tracks
Mario Clock (Doh!) - MEH. It's kind of basic collecting coins and alarm clock feature
Alleyway --Well its fairly basic but my nostalgia is pretty hardcore for this game .

I broke down and bought Alleyway even though it's so basic. I bought mario clock by accident because i thought it was calculator.

Pokedex3D really sucks and is too hardcore for me. Nothing interesting

I knew they said they were coming, but having all the 3DS trailers available the day of the conference (in 3D no less :Q !) was an absolute surprise and joy! Heres hoping Nintendo continues this trend of advertisement of games coming to this system through the eShop. It certainly helps to keep up my hype when I can see  how the game will look on my screen any time I want (especially with most of those games arriving in next 6 months!)
Title: Re: E-Shop: What games are you planning on buying on Day 1?

So I've picked up:

-All the E3 trailers
-Link's Awakening (LOVING it)
-Super Mario Land (Better then I remember it, but still not a huge fan, wish there were more shooting stages)
-Pokedex
-Excitebike 3D (Seems kind of lazy to me, I can't see these 3D remakes being worth $6 unless they do a bit more to them)

I think it will really depend on the source material for the 3D remake to see if its worth the $6.  For the original Metroid to be made into a 3D classic, I'll definitely bite.  If Excitebike wasn't free, the features that were added would not have garnered a purchase from me.  If they had online play and leader boards for track times, then that would have impressed me.  As a free product though, I appreciate what Nintendo has done with it and enjoy it all the same.

Online Track Sharing would garner a $6 price tag.  Though if you never played Excitebike this be a the version I recommend.  THough Excitebot 3DS would be interestingly awesome.

I played it a little bit back when Zelda DX came out, but that was it. I'm already long past where I got to originally. One thing I love is how the overworld map isn't too big, yet is still quite diverse. Not to mention the game just gets flat out weird at times with its characters, which I love (Goombas in a Zelda game is so strange yet so wonderful all at once!).

I just payed for Links Awakening and it's just as awesome as I remember it. That was my first Zelda game and it took me 2 years to get the Tail Key and open the gate. I remember I just did not understand anything beyond run and jump with the occasional duck. At the same time I wasn't that stupid, I took that darn mushroom to the Wich but I never stood right in front of the pot to present it. So for years I kept going back and forth looking for rupees and digging like there was no tomorrow. I'll never forget the day my cousin came to me and said "she took the mushroom!" I literally wondered for years what was beyond those rocks and holes in the ground. After that my reading comprehension skills snowballed to amazing levels, instead of assuming everything in text was nonesense I took it all in and assumed it meant something. That moment in life blew my mind as a kid.

Unfortunately, I don't think the Game Gear had any games worth playing.

Someone's going to argue with this, which I welcome, because I figure there's probably an exception to that but I'm too lazy to do the research myself, so I'll just throw out the bait and let it come to me.

I never owned a Game Gear, so I don't really know of any myself.  However there are three Shining Force games on the handheld (only the second of which made it to the west).  And I love me some Shining Force, so I'd definitely buy those without question.

Can they emulate the Game Gear TV Tuner? (Probably not, analog broadcasting is dead).

Adolph Vega- What do you mean by "the border is cool" in your blurb about Mario Land?  What border?

Have to say Link's Awakening save system is really clunky, have no idea why it doesn't ask you to save after you beat a dungeon or something. Also the 3DS button placement isn't great for the "push all the buttons to save", which is a lame way to save a game. So I was using the save point, thing is that I beat the the 6th dungeon, and had to do something so I made a save point and shut off my 3DS. I came back and when I tried to start my save point I accidently created one instead of loading my old one, so I had to start from my last in game save point, which of course was at the beginning of dungeon 6 since I only died once in it. Ugh!

I totally agree about the save point.  I loved the original but forgot how saving went.   If I want to use the games actual save and not the virtual console save point.  I have to sit my 3ds down on a table or flat hard surface.   Use my left hand to press the start and select buttons, and my right hand for A and B.     Even then it takes me several tries to get it to through.    The button placement and the design of the start and select buttons really makes it hard.

Thanks for the heads up on the save thing though.   I didn't even think of possibly messing up that restore point..    Gotta make sure to start doing a hard save each time now. Heads up appreciated.

Yeah I'll be much careful next time. It is one flaw in an otherwise fantastic game. Wish Nintendo would have allowed you to create multiple restore points just in case you mess up one. Oh well, I know what to do in that dungeon now lol.

I'd be happy to hear any games worth playing for Game Gear as well. The only one I can think of is Sonic The Hedgehog. But that's about the only one I can think of playing. A friend of mine had a Game Gear and that was the only game I played on it. Never beat. When they put all the Sonic Game Gear games in Sonic Adventure DX for the GameCube, I was finally able to play that game and finally beat it. It holds up alright. Never really got too far in the other Sonic Game Gear Games but they looked fine enough.

Agree with the issues regarding the placement of the Start/Select buttons.

Comeon, Nintendo - let us customize our button layouts. :(

Tails' Adventure is likely the best Game Gear game I ever played. Several I had were not very fun at all, but this one had some fun elements to it as the game progressed.

Am I the only one who has noticed that the physics in ExciteBike 3D were completely changed? Now, Biker Bob (that's what I call the biker guy) falls like a ton of bricks, especially when pressing forward on the D-pad. Many jumps in the normal tracks are now extremely difficult to land correctly, and some seem downright impossible to get past without at the least slowing down. I booted up the original game on the NES to make sure I wasn't misremembering, and it runs much more smoothly on it. I'm disappointed in this 3DS version; it's a good thing it was free.

I'm glad you said something.  I thought he was floatier in the original but that was so long ago.  I'm like I don't remember him pretty much having no momentum.

My first digital purchase on the 3DS is AlphaBounce. It's a DSiWare game that's an Arkanoid clone. In between levels, there's a nice map system Each square on the map is a different level and you can move in all four directions. Certain areas with icons will unlock abilities when cleared. For example, I can now opt to have  my ball be an ice ball and freeze blocks on one hit and shatter them on the next hit. This is useful for stages that have many blocks that normally require 3+ hits to destroy.

Anyway, it's the best Arkanoid style game I've ever played (not that I've played them all). But if you like Arkanoid type games, I highly recommend it based on my first 2-3 hours of play.

I now own all 9 3DS VC games available in North America, though I only bought Alleyway because I had all the other ones and have no intention of ever playing it.

Oh, Alleyway is a lot of fun.  I played it for hours on a plane recently.

Except I already have AlphaBounce, and haven't gotten around to playing that yet, so if I'm going to play an Arkanoid clone it'll be that.

Does this mean that you are going to buy every game that gets released onto the VC?

Seems kinda silly to buy a game you have no intention of ever playing, especially when it's a digital game. I could see maybe doing that with a physical game, it could become worth money unopened in the future, and you could sell it as part of a collection.

I really hope not.

It's only kinda silly if by "kinda" you mean "really," and by "silly" you mean "stupid."

Insanolord,  Theirs really only a few explanations.

You gotta catch'em all on the VC.
You feel without the weight of these bits the 3DS is going to float away.
Free Space offends you.
You really like the feeling of Power and tense decision making that comes from having to clean your fridge so much that you want to extend that to the SD Card.
You feel its very satisfying to have an army of games pop up after the 3DS loads.
Your hoping by spending money on these titles the VC release will speed up and broaden out so you can get a copy of obscurish games like Battle Bull and Bubble Ghost (Both of which are good and should come to the VC)
You are a compulsive Pre-Sleep buyer.

And yes, I still own every 3DS VC game.
