Podcast Discussion / Episode 801: The Cowabunga Proclamation
« on: December 18, 2022, 03:56:58 PM »

Announcing our intent to enshrine Turtle Power into our charter.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/62415/episode-801-the-cowabunga-proclamation

Our favorite ninja turtles? Chad, Chip and Chet.

There's so much going on this week, but most importantly it is our final regular episode of 2022. Next week we'll be releasing a Xenoblade Chronicles 3 spoilercast and, if we record one, the subsequent week will be recorded in 2022 but will release in 2023.

But that's next week. This week? Jon doesn't have any New Business - so we talk for half an hour about Destiny 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Monster Hunter Rise, and then make fun of the current Genesis offerings on the Nintendo Switch Online with Expansion Pass. Gui is looking at becoming a Pinball Wizard with Pinball FX3: Dr Dude and his Excellent Ray and Indiana Jones: The Pinball Adventure. When I talk about my Excellent Ray I get removed from the premises. The double-standards of the intelligentsia continues.

After a break, Greg and Gui talk about the latest wave of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC. Greg then offers impressions of Switch Castlevania-like Dire Vengeance. Last on the New Business front, James has a brief spate of incoherent thoughts about the Xenoblade Chronicles DLC - The Nopon are at it again."

We close the show with a single, rather lengthy, email: "are you ready for new Nintendo hardware?" You can ask how else we want to spend our money here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 800: I Am the One Who Sucks
« on: December 11, 2022, 01:27:28 PM »

Not technically, at least in this game.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/62368/episode-800-i-am-the-one-who-sucks

Can you believe we've produced 800 numbered episodes of Radio Free Nintendo? What an unbelievable series of an events this show has become. That includes this week, where our entire audience debated how much the Wii U GamePad actually weighs.

Rather than do a big party, we planned a live show RetroActive to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Wii U. We had a lot of people join us to talk about Kirby and the Rainbow Curse.

Thanks to all the people who have made this show possible, including our audience.

Holiday schedules are going to be a little weird going forward, but get us emails for a Listener Mail segment because we are definitely doing a regular episode this week.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 798: That China Warrior Je Ne Sais Quoi
« on: November 20, 2022, 01:29:23 PM »

I do know big sprites, and these? Big.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/62203/episode-798-that-china-warrior-je-ne-sais-quoi

This week we do a little house cleaning before our week off and the upcoming RetroActive on Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. That means we start the show with some Listener Mail. This week we look at: confusing controller layouts, what makes Xenoblade Chronicles X special, and the New 3DS making us all old. You can cue us up to talk about the latest developments in the Japanese legal system here.

Gui had a little New Business he wanted to get off his plate, so we close the show with a chat on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection.

Just a reminder: we're doing a live RetroActive on Kirby and the Rainbow Curse as part of Episode 800. We'll be recording on December 10. Time will be posted later. You can also drop your thoughts here, and we may use them as part of the show.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 797: Careful, Thwimps Can Still Hurt You
« on: November 13, 2022, 04:38:38 PM »

Everything has a name.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/62161/episode-797-careful-thwimps-can-still-hurt-you

It's an all New Business show this week!

Greg starts us off talking about Kirby: Canvas Curse, inspired by our just-announced RetroActive (more to come later in the article). And, since he's already on his new DSi, he's also finished off Super Princess Peach and got back into Rhythm Heaven (aka: Rhythm Tengoku Gold). Lastly, he's started 13 Sentinels. You should too. I'll wait.

James is NOT playing garbage, which is a nice change of pace, and instead is playing a musou game... it's progress. This time he's playing Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, and this alternate history warriors thing might be getting out of hand.

After a break, Gui is playing animal noir game Backbone and weird dating sim Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!. Lastly, Jon closes the show out with impressions of It Takes Two, a game that really takes the charm out of marriage.

You've heard the news, but here's the official statement: We are doing our next RetroActive on Kirby and the Rainbow Curse for Wii U. We will also talk a bit about Canvas Curse on DS, but we're looking to honor the Wii U. We'll be doing this for Episode 800, and we'll be recording live on Saturday, December 10. Time to come once we've figured it out.

Join us to shoot your shot, and if you can't make it you can still post your thoughts in the thread.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 796: I'm a Tantric Man
« on: November 05, 2022, 04:20:50 PM »

With a tantric plan...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/62023/episode-796-im-a-tantric-man

This week we set out to record a Patreon episode and instead crafted a long episode for the main feed. You all suggested games for our Wii U-focused RetroActive, and we spent 210 minutes debating which game to play. Some were easily dismissed, but as the 28 game list began to shrink, things got contentious. There were tense negotiations, mind games, passionate debates, and more. We did finally settle on a winner, a schedule, and even a bonus announcement BUT I wont spoil those today.

We'll put the details of the RetroActive in the article in a few days.

I will say, we'll be recording it as part of episode 800, so take a listen and get started now.

As always, send your emails our way.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 795: Drinking Some Fresh Lon Lon Milk
« on: October 30, 2022, 10:48:11 AM »

We now know the identity of Lon.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/62005/episode-795-drinking-some-fresh-lon-lon-milk

Bayonetta is out, but it wasn't when we recorded. So no, we didn't talk about it. Instead we let James talk about garbage like  #Halloween, Super Puzzles Dream. It isn't just an eShop jigsaw puzzle, it's somehow worse. Jon is playing Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind on Steam Deck because this is where we are now. Gui has FPS Prodeus, a retro-inspired shooter available on everything, and action RPG Cat Quest II. Thankfully, someone on this show is interested in providing you content that might help find your next game. Greg and Gui then pivot the show to talk about Pilotwings 64, and its erotic rocket belt.

Then weird things happen, and James for once is not the responsible party. At least not exclusively.

After the show is removed from the brick wall it plowed through, its time for Listener Mail. This week we talk about game soundtracks we'd like to see performed live and the fate of a Mario Movie game. You can sell us your burned CD-R via the inbox.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 794: A True Cover Art Crime Podcast
« on: October 24, 2022, 05:48:03 PM »

"We have one of the most influential artists in the world. Can't have that!" - Sega

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/61943/episode-794-a-true-cover-art-crime-podcast

This week we don't breakdown trailers, and we don't go through Jon's AliExpress order history, we get right down to games.

Greg bought a DSi in 2022 and is using it to play games like Super Princess Peach. Again, in 2022. Gui is playing The Curse of Monkey Island, Sable (an open world platformer) and Panzer Dragoon Orta. Jon is poking around with his Steam Deck. James is... who can say.

After a break, we end up only covering a single email: "What is up with Platinum?"

This isn't just a story about Bayonetta 3's voice actor drama, which seems to love taking turns right after we finish recording, but about the company as a whole. Sometimes seen as a company in "disarray" the question seems a bit more complex.

And yes, as of recording Platinum had not made a comment about the situation. This time they didn't even wait for us to finish to render that statement untrue: they issued a statement as we were answering this very question.

Just a reminder, we are looking for Wii U games for our next RetroActive. It does not need to be a Wii U exclusive, but it should be associated with the Wii U intimately. It also does not need to be an eShop-only game, but since those are going away they might get extra attention.

No. We are not playing Devil's Third. It is a miserable game. We're not playing Sonic Boom. We're not playing some other terrible game you can find on Wii U.

If you have suggestions for games that we will enjoy playing, the audience will enjoy hearing us talk about, and that you will enjoy playing with us, you can send them to our inbox. As always, questions can join them.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 793: My Colleague Bought a Novelty Fridge

Please pre-chill your food.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/61824/episode-793-my-colleague-bought-a-novelty-fridge

I don't even need to tell you which colleague I'm talking about. You know who would buy a novelty refrigerator: Greg.

So we tried to have New Business but instead we talked about some trailers and then Jon Lindemann's technological gadgets. Did James predict Jon's purchase two months ago?

You tell me.

He also bought a Steam Deck, which you would think would illicit a lot more conversation than a fridge that isn't even a real fridge, but only if you've never listed to this podcast.

We literally spend the entire segment on this. No good reason for this, but we do. So after a break we dive into three questions from two emails. Why are all these older game makers getting into media projects? What weird license would we put on our game? And what Atlus game should be saved from the 3DS eShop oblivion?

You can send your emails here.

We're also asking you to send your suggestions for Wii U games (preferable eShop ones) for our next RetroActive. Send them to the same place as above.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 792: The Life Pharaonic
« on: October 07, 2022, 03:55:36 PM »

Lon Jindemann wants to talk about Mario's ass.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/61766/episode-792-the-life-pharaonic

You might have heard the news, Nintendo dropped a trailer.

That trailer: a weirdly sexual trailer for Pilotwings 64.

Oh, you wanted to hear about the Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer? We talked about that too, but it quickly devolves into accusations and counter-accusations over some people's body-negativity. At one point RFN's listeners, that is you, are accused of being "the problem."

You should expect nothing better. This is episode 792. We have a track record. At this point, any surprise is a you issue.

After a much-needed break, we tackle some New Business. James proves last week's email correct by talking about visual novel fault - StP - LIGHTKRAVTE. I'm serious, that's the name. Guillaume finished Doom 64 and is now playing Return to Monkey Island. Lastly, Greg takes a look at the DLC for Cuphead, the Splatoon 3 Splatfest, and playing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on the Switch OLED.

You can send your emails here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 791: Earthworm Jim Will Never Score

Do worms "score?" Do they score twice?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/61710/episode-791-earthworm-jim-will-never-score

Another week, another post nobody is going to read. In a way, I think this is a good thing. It's not as if I toil away, crafting a narrative journey to sell you on giving us a couple hours of your time. The good news: since you aren't reading this, you'll be surprised to find that the show is entirely Listener Mail.

That's right, you the entirely hypothetical reader who is feigning surprise, the entire runtime is devoted to your questions. Let's go through them, person who does not exist. We are asked if the Mario Movie is going to feature a Minions-like supporting character to bank on. We are also asked why we never talk about Visual Novels, and it turns out the reasons are pretty simple. Lastly, we put our media executive hats back on to create our 2022 reboot of Captain N.

You can send us your spec scripts here.

Everything we do, we do it for you.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/61625/episode-790-the-canadian-music-that-distracted-us

I'm not going to spend a bunch of time on today's article, because you only read it when I say you wont and because I was on a long bike ride today.

Here's a polar bear.

Note: not an actual polar bear. I respect red lights while on a bicycle, but I would make an exception.

New Business

  • Jon: Pocket Card Jockey - Gambling on yourself, and losing.
  • James: eShop Failures and Dragon Ball: The Breakers - Hurting yourself for others' amusement
  • Greg: Splatoon 3, Mario Strikers: Battle League - Updates on multiplayer Nintendo service games, as a service to you
  • Guillaume: Doom II, Doom 64, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge - Hellspawn, Hellspawn, Pirate ghosts: it's spooky season!

Listener Mail

  • Jon Lindemann's not self-written sexiness concern.
  • Distracting foes with musical interludes.

As always, send 'em.

Use promo code "twintail" to get 20% off NordVPN.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/61613/episode-789-fire-emblem-disengage

It's Nintendo Direct season, and we... talk about the Nintendo Direct. With our crew at full strength for the first time in over a month, we break down 40 minutes of news and updates. These include: Pikmin 4, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of a Kingdom, and Fire Emblem Engage.

Of course, the Direct eats up the majority of our time, but we do find a little window for some New Business. Greg has completed Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and has moved onto Splatoon 3. Guillaume is playing Doom. The original Doom, not Doom 3. It's a shame it isn't Doom 3 because that would be funny.

As always, send us your questions.

This week we are without Greg. But instead, we have a lot of email. Questions answered this week: our ideal Digital Eclipse collection, words we can't say, and a marketer's self-marketing book. You can market yourself here.

After a break, Gui and Jon have New Business. Gui has completed Live A Live and still loves it. He's also playing a game from a friend called In Retrospect. Jon bought the Sunbreak amiibo and Commodore 64: a Visual Compendium, a book about... well you can guess.

Where was Goofy as Gondolin burned?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/61387/episode-787-for-a-safe-and-secure-magic-kingdom

This week we continue our run of missing hosts with Gui on vacation. Where's he going? What's he doing? Who can say?

I can say that Jon's back. Use this information as you will.

Given that I'm editing, I have decided to keep the article brief, hence why I'm still not telling you what we did this week.

This week, Jon kicks-off New Business with a look at Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, a bomb defusing game on Switch in the hands of a man I would trust with high explosives. He's also still swimming with the whales of Diablo Immortal. Greg takes a break from talking about Xenoblade Chronicles 3 to talk his recently-acquired Switch OLED Splatoon edition and last weekend's Splatoon 3 introductory Splatfest. A very tired James closes out New Business with a cozy platformer for tired people Here Comes Niko and a review of the current contents of the eShop.

After a break, we tackle a duo of very important emails. The first asks us to answer yet another moral question about an absolute monarchy. The second question asks us about the impact of game trials on our gaming-buying habits. You can send us your non-Kingdom Hearts emails here.

He didn't earn the Chaotic nickname for nothing.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/61277/episode-785-chaotic-gore-macgala-is-not-looking-for-a-square-go

We start the show this week with YOUR Listener Mail. It is YOUR segment, so if its bad that's on you. Luckily, this week it isn't. Instead we talk about how Embracer Group keeps buying everyone and take some lessons in bad video game names. You can ask us the unknowable by hiding your question in a pallet of unsold EA games and email it to us.

After a break we dive into New Business. This week, Gui still isn't sure how to say Live A Live, Jon fights Scottish men in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, and Greg continues his more nuanced pace with Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and pursues our Water World visions in the N64 Online Games release of Wave Race 64.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 784: Psyduck, You Sucker
« on: August 14, 2022, 02:19:29 PM »

The only reason this episode isn't named "Jon Lindemann is a curious man" is that I do not like puns.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/61201/episode-784-psyduck-you-sucker

The Radio Free Nintendo News Network is back, breaking all the news from the Splatoon 3 Direct, which I'm sure you definitely haven't seen yet. You know that they didn't really have much new to say about Splatoon because it was a direct that we talked about for only 1x the actual length of the presentation. If there had been much new we would at least get to 3x.

After talking about some squids, we move to New Business. This week Guillaume reviews the process of reviewing the remaster of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II. If that sounds like naval gazing then... yeah a little. Jon is off being irresponsible with his money, spending all of $5 on Duke Nukem Forever, the only game whose name is: a thread, a promise, and a remarkable prediction all at the same time. James and Greg are still exploring Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Greg has basically caught up to where James was last week and James has... a lot of time under his belt.

After a break, we tackle a couple Listener Mail. This week we create post-apocalyptic sequels to Nintendo games (besides Zelda) and discuss the economic imperatives that caused Facebook Meta to raise the price of the Oculus Quest 2 and if others will follow. You can get a lecture on component-driven pricing by sending us an email.

The true cost of the Smash clones is laid bare.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/61171/episode-783-ironic-lovers-of-garfield-are-still-garfield-lovers

This week we're back at full strength. Greg and James talk Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Almost no story chat right now, as neither had cleared chapter 3. Gui has been focused on twin-stick shooter Destropolis. He's also been busily trying out Smash-likes Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl and MultiVersus. No one can ever complain about a Fire Emblem character ever again. Jon has some quick-hit impressions of  Panzer Dragoon: Remake and updates on Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak and Diablo Immortal. Lastly, Greg closes out New Business with thoughts on the new Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC tracks.

Lastly, we close out the show with a review of the Pokémon Presents update on Violet and Scarlet.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 782: Mad Whale McCree
« on: July 31, 2022, 06:44:00 AM »

"From hell's heart I stab at thee."

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/61088/episode-782-mad-whale-mccree

Guillaume is on vacation this week, so that leaves it to the remaining Jon, James, and Greg to put on a show while impatiently waiting for Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

New Business kicks-off with Jon trying to bait recovered addict James back into Forza Horizon 5.The bait is the new Hot Wheels DLC. It sounds really fun, and I mean, a little look can't hurt, right? Speaking of unhealthy play-styles, Jon hit the pay2win loot-grind stage of Diablo Immortal. It's a game where legends are bought, your server-mates try to pick fights, and a whale lurks in the seas. James finished Astral Chain and it is very much on the chain. I'd feel bad for that joke, but that's all the creativity this game really deserves. Greg also finished his pre-Xenoblade work with final thoughts on Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series. He has some advice if you plan to play both Klonoa 1 and 2.

After a break, we tackle a trio of Listener Mail. We try to decide if there any games left for the Nintendo Arcade Archives, offer instructions on constructing mail ordered "upgrades" for Collector's Editions, and mourn a life spent making a single AAA. You can mail order a collector's edition of this podcast right here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 781: War Gods Is My Religion
« on: July 24, 2022, 01:41:59 PM »

Stop taking about War Gods!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/61060/episode-781-war-gods-is-my-religion

This week we manage to have all of our segments, if not quite in proper balance. This includes Nintendo's recent insistence that all episodes need a news segment. This week that segment covers three highly-questionable choices for the Nintendo Switch Online service. We then turn to tackle a trio of emails: how do we feel about "leaker culture," how do you make a non-offensive religious game, and what games should have less words for story. You can send us an email here.

After the break we do a little New Business. Greg is mostly focused on Klonoa 2 from Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series. He's also got news on the "Daisy" update to Mario Strikers: Battle League. Guillaume is playing the recently-released Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II remaster for Switch. James is trying to grind through his backlog before Xenoblade Chronicles 3, this time with Astral Chain. He's been playing it using the Satisfye ZenGrip Pro, now compatible with the Switch OLED.

71

Like all "truthers," they're wrong.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/61011/episode-780-the-artist-vs-the-thousand-year-truthers

This week, twenty minutes spent on news are SOLELY responsible for us being unable to provide you a Listener Mail segment. Clearly, Bayonetta 3 and Kirby's Dream Buffet need to return to the abyss from whence they came. Alas, they will not, so we cover this E3 Direct to start the show. Remember, Nintendo made both of these instead of making an F-Zero game. They are both 100% responsible. Sound off in the comments.

After we roll through that news, we... transformer our hair into... we do New Business. Jon gives us an update on Diablo Immortal and its ludicrous number of currencies. It has more currencies than a Crypto exchange, seconds before North Korean hackers clean it out. And on the current trajectory, about the same real-world values. James is trying to race through his backlog before Xenoblade Chronicles 3 launches in under two weeks. He already finished Future Connected, and now he's started - and completed - Paper Mario: The Origami King. He has thoughts, but they're mostly about the discourse surrounding this game and how some of you are just unfathomably wrong.

After a breather, Guillaume has an update on Citizen Sleeper, which he now feels better equipped to describe. He then moves onto Carrion, a game where you play a flesh-munching tentacle monster, and I will not add any additional jokes here. Lastly, Greg closes out the show with some additional thoughts on ElecHead before moving on to talk monster hunting in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. He and Jon dive deep into getting going in Sunbreak and how it deviates from the previous content.

As always, emails go here.

My Jersey Devil is going to Bug! your Punky Skunk.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/60913/episode-779-gex-and-your-wild-woody

Last week we did no email, this week we do all email. This averages the show to half and half. That's math. Please respect math.

This week we tackle a bunch of email, but our entire first segment succumbs to a single question: "What genre of game is likely to contribute the most 'Worst Game Ever' candidates". After a break, we try to move more briskly with three questions: what console to go with a shiny new 4K TV, why would a company make a "defensive acquisition", and what is the minimum time to play a "free" game before dropping it.

If you have a burning question, you can send our way.

73

It's not inflation; it's $9 bananas.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/60862/episode-777-are-we-really-doing-the-banana-conspiracy

James returns to the non-sequential 777. Despite there being ample reason to engage in the exercise, he is such a mature and forgiving host that he does not turn this into a corrections episode.

This week we spend a lot of time talking about the Nintendo Partner Direct Mini Showcase Direct Mini. There was a medium amount of news, and I don't need to recite it all for you (because we do that on the show). Also, it's already on this website. And also, it happened about six days ago.

REGARDLESS, if you have somehow not seen the Partner Direct Mini Nintendo Non-Nintendo Showcase Direct To You, June 2022 then by all means, our dulcet tones will vibrate the news directly against your tiny ear bones.

After talking about the Direct (Mini, Partner, etc.) we circle back to talk about the Xenoblade 3 Direct again, because time is a flat circle. Please note, this is not a corrections segment, despite corrections being issued. There are distinctions known only to me, but they are official RFN canon.

Finally, after news provided on an "Age of Sail" delay, we get into some New Business. James has been, not coincidentally, playing Future Connected from Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. Jon has begun his quest to exterminate all the monsters with the Sunbreak expansion to Monster Hunter Rise. Greg is playing indie platformer ElecHead, now on Switch. Lastly, Gui has final thoughts on Dicey Dungeons and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge and new thoughts on Citizen Sleeper.

The "wordy RPG in which you can kill yourself while inspecting a light" Guillaume was looking for is Disco Elysium.

Lastly, send email now.

74

Bayonetta is going in the flea dip.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/60748/episode-776-lice-are-a-big-problem-for-hair-demons

This week there's not exactly a theme to use to launch the article, so I wont. James passingly mentions that he's playing Card Shark, a game about cheating during the French Enlightenment. He encourages playing the demo. Guillaume has found his next brawler: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. He seems to really like it, but he's been busy: he's also playing Dicey Dungeons and Pac-Man Museum+. Jon and Greg are both playing the demo for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. Lastly, Greg closes New Business with Mario Strikers: Battle League and Shin Megami Tensei V.

After a break, we tackle a couple emails. First, in light of Nintendo's difficulty to sell the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 limited edition, Jon and James explore why this is so very hard. Our second email asks us to seed a tournament and decide: who will win. You can send us your eCommerce support questions here.

Investing in sports only makes sense if you made your money running a... uh... no comment.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/60691/episode-775-luigis-haunted-real-estate-speculation

Oh no, I'm running late on the article. Whatever shall I do?

I know, I'll write very brisk notes.

James and Greg played the demo for Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes. Greg also has got his first kick at Mario Strikers: Battle League [Football]. Guillaume is done playing Nobody Saves the World and now is playing Space Invaders Invincible Collection. Lastly, Jon is playing Diablo Immortal.

Email, just the one, beloved series we refuse to give up on (and those we already did). Emails: here.
