PREVIEWS: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
« on: April 15, 2009, 02:20:28 PM »
Being built with the Wii in mind, Revenge of the Fallen promises to be a fun action game with solid co-op and potentially awesome unlockables.

Based on the upcoming movie, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is being built from the ground up for Wii by Krome Studios, who also developed last year's Wii version of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Designed with an "instant action, instant fun" philosophy in mind, Revenge of the Fallen has three different gameplay modes, a Super Mario Galaxy-like cooperative mode, and much more.

The game lets you play as both the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons as they battle all over the world. There are three different types of play - on-foot, driving, and flying – that correspond to each robotÂ’s transformation abilities. The robot-based levels put you in the role of a Transformer as they walk around in their robot form. You can use machine guns, rockets, and melee moves to attack enemies, and can also unleash a devastating transformation attack that is unique to each Transformer.

The driving sections are based around racing, as you take control of a Transformer in their vehicle form and race to the finish while destroying enemies. During these levels you can transform into robot form to destroy enemies and obstacles. The flying levels are similar to the driving sections, but obviously take place in the air.

The drop-in drop-out co-op mode takes inspiration from Nintendo's Super Mario Galaxy, letting a second player take control of a little ball-like robot that hovers around the screen. This robot can shield the main character, fire a weapon, use a big special attack, and trade energy with the main character if either is low on health. The two players can also combine for a larger special attack. The co-op character can't die, but he loses functionality if he takes a beating.

In addition to these modes there is an Arena mode, where players can team up as different Transformers and fight off enemies together. More arenas are unlocked as the player progresses through the game.

Also included are Feats, which are similar to Xbox 360 Achievements. When Feats are accomplished, they unlock comic book images, concept art, and more. The “more” part should be intriguing for longtime fans of the series, since Hasbro opened up the vault and is allowed Activision and Krome Studios unprecedented access to the series' past.

Revenge of the Fallen promises to be a solid and fun action game when it hits stores near the movie's release at the end of June.

This actually sounds really interesting. And Krome Studioes making it have caught my attention. Do we know if and when a review is coming?

Regardless, we should be getting a review copy eventually so you'll get to see a staffer's perspective on what IGN declared garbage.

Activision is very good at making games seem a lot better than they are at press events.

I guess I just got my hopes up for an awesome Transformers game. Fond chidhood memories in gaming form.

Don't worry, I was hoping it would be good, too.
At the very least, I think it's better than the last round of games.

Well, Chou Soujuu Mecha MG has transforming mechs and is good though I guess if your experience with Transformers goes beyond the toys you might have attachment to the specific characters.

Oh, right, the DS game is supposedly good.

How ironic that Activision claims that this version of the game was made with the Wii in mind and the movie's star Shia Lebouf insults the Wii in an interview.

Even better was the next week when they sent Megan Fox out to do damage control.  :D
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

I think IGN's review made the comment "at least there's no Shia LaBoeuf in this game".

After all the movie's supposed to be about giant robots, how can some dude be the star of it?
