TalkBack / Metroid Prime Store Demo Available
« on: October 17, 2002, 12:23:39 PM »
Cube Clubs not coming to your town?  That's okay, you can still play Metroid Prime!

Reports are coming in that the newest GameCube in-store demo contains a playable Metroid Prime sample.  It seems that the demo is the same one shown at the E3 Expo back in May, or a slightly modified version of it.  The demo is apparently timed, but that E3 demo level could be beaten in less than ten minutes if you were fast...so consider this a challenge from Nintendo.  Beat the demo before time runs out!

Currently, we know the Metroid Prime playable demo is present in at least some Electronics Boutique stores, and probably other mall store chains as well.  Department stores like Walmart will likely receive the new demo discs soon, if they don't already have them.  Check your local store for availability, and try to be patient if they don't have it yet...yeah, right!

Ever wanted to own the Lugia PT Cruiser?  Maybe you'd be more interested in E3 passes or a tour of NOA headquarters?  If you've got the money, this is your chance.

The Interactive Digital Software Association, the same organization behind the E3 Expo, is hosting its annual "Nite to Unite for Kids" charity event.  In addition to a snazzy black-tie dinner at $500 per plate, the IDSA is hosting a myriad of online auctions at eBay to raise money for the event.  The big prize is a one-of-a-kind Chrysler PT Cruiser, decorated to look like Lugia (a Pokemon, in case you're not cool enough to already know that).  There are also tons of smaller auctions for those of us who can't just go around buying custom-built cars when we feel like it.  You can bid on everything from a skateboard autographed by Tony Hawk, to passes for the E3 Expo in May, to a tour of Nintendo of America headquarters.  Check out the official announcement below, then hit the link above to see the list of auctions.  Remember, it's for charity!

During the A Nite to Unite - for Kids online charity auction, you can bid on and buy unique game packages and hard-to-find products on eBay, The World's Online Marketplace.

The online charity auction will run two weeks, October 10 - 20, 2002 at http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/nite2unite4kids/.

What that means is that there will be a new GameCube title coming out almost every single day during November and December.

NINTENDO GAMECUBE -- 180 Reasons Why Men Crave It and Women Envy It   Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 0 Mark Unprecedented Holiday Season For Older Gamers   REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 2002--The game worlds on NINTENDO GAMECUBE(TM) this fall are filled with the boundless innovation of Animal Crossing(TM), an epic tale of dinosaur rescue in Star Fox(R) Adventures, and the unbridled merriment of Super Mario Sunshine(TM). But, from now on ... it's gonna get crazy.

Today, Nintendo kicks-off "Non-Stop Nights of Nintendo," an unprecedented launch schedule, with practically a game-a-day from October through December, featuring dozens of game releases designed for teen and mature players. The cornerstones of the line-up are the launches of two of the most wildly anticipated exclusive NINTENDO GAMECUBE titles, Metroid(R) Prime (Nov. 18) and Capcom's Resident Evil 0 (Nov. 12). But these games are only a start. Before New Year's Eve, older players will see their favorite game genres flooded with titles featuring traditional and extreme sports, racing, fighting and first-person-shooters, building the NINTENDO GAMECUBE library to a total of 180 games by year's end.

"Nintendo has always delivered innovative, high-quality interactive entertainment, and it's only logical to see them more aggressively push to increase their appeal among an older audience," says Jerry Madaio, vice president, merchandising, Electronics Boutique. "Standout titles like Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 0 achieve that goal."

"For more than 20 years, Nintendo has justifiably earned its reputation as the only company capable of creating hit games for all ages, across all cultures," says Peter MacDougall, executive vice president, sales and marketing, Nintendo of America Inc. "But this fall, NINTENDO GAMECUBE owners will find that same emphasis on top-quality and riveting thrills inside games with decidedly more mature environments."

Aside from Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 0, Nintendo also released the exclusive, psychological thriller Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem(TM) in June. Among the upcoming NINTENDO GAMECUBE releases through the end of the year are: Star Wars: Bounty Hunter from LucasArts; FIFA 2003, Knockout Kings 2003, Medal of Honor: Frontline and James Bond: Nightfire from Electronic Arts; Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon from Ubi Soft; Die Hard Vendetta from Vivendi Universal; X-Men: Next Dimension and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 from Activision; Batman: Dark Tomorrow from Kemco; TimeSplitters 2 from Eidos; Sega Sports: NHL 2003 and Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II from Sega; Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance from Interplay; Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance from Midway; Black and Bruised from Majesco, and many more.

Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its popular home video game systems. The systems include Game Boy(R), Nintendo(R) 64, Game Boy Advance and NINTENDO GAMECUBE(TM). Since the release of its first home video game system in 1983, Nintendo has sold more than 1.6 billion video games worldwide, creating enduring industry icons such as Mario(TM) and Donkey Kong(R) and launching such franchises as Zelda(TM) and Pokemon(R). As a wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo's operations in the Western Hemisphere.

TalkBack / BAFTA Winners Announced
« on: October 11, 2002, 11:36:26 AM »
...and Nintendo took home two of the European game awards.

The annual BAFTA awards were held yesterday, and Nintendo games received two of the prizes.  (Perfect Dark fans will remember finding one of the awards tucked away in a safe in that game.)

Pikmin won the Interactivity category.  Here's what the organization had to say:

Shigeru Miyamoto has again created a game of great beauty, bucking the current trend for graphic realism to create an imaginative, original world. His central character is a cross between Mr Magoo and Casper the Ghost in a space suit. The environments are gloriously realised; the feel of the game is friendly and warm. Pikmin creates an immersive, coherent and utterly believable world where "hey I can do that" is the norm.

Luigi's Mansion received the award for Audio:

Beautiful in its simplicity, charming in its innocence, this soundtrack is completely worthy of carrying forward the Mario legend, blazing its own creative trail. Close attention to overall balance and separation, coupled with great sound effects and music content - and a healthy dose of humour - results in something approaching masterpiece. Inventive, uncluttered, and big fun.

Hit the link above to see the rest of the winners.  Thanks to Xavier of Puissance-Nintendo for pointing this news out to us!

The Best NBA Simulation Returns With A New Franchise Mode, ESPN Telecast-Style Presentation, Unprecedented Player Control and Online GamePlay

SAN FRANCISCO - (October 7, 2002) - SEGA(R) of America, Inc. announced today the simultaneous release of "SEGA Sports(TM) NBA 2K3" for the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox(TM) video game system from Microsoft(R) and the Nintendo GameCube(TM). Critically acclaimed for its authentic and entertaining simulation of the NBA game, "SEGA Sports NBA 2K3" takes the genre to unprecedented levels of realism with unmatched player and ball physics, an ESPN telecast-style presentation, groundbreaking animations, an in-depth franchise mode and full online gameplay on PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Developed by Visual Concepts Entertainment, a SEGA development studio, "SEGA Sports NBA 2K3" captures all of the nuances of the NBA game, from Allen Iverson's signature crossover to high-flying dunks from the league's top skywalkers.

"The 'SEGA Sports NBA 2K' series has consistently delivered the type of hoops simulation experience that NBA fans crave and it has quickly become a cornerstone of the SEGA Sports brand," said Tom Nichols, vice president of sports marketing, SEGA of America, Inc.

"In the development of 'SEGA Sports NBA 2K3,' we concentrated on perfecting both the gameplay and visual elements that are truly specific to the NBA," said Greg Thomas, president of Visual Concepts Entertainment, a SEGA development studio. "As a result, gamers are closer to the NBA hardwood in 'SEGA Sports NBA 2K3' than any other NBA video game."

Building off the strong gameplay foundation of the "SEGA Sports NBA 2K" series, gameplay enhancements to "SEGA Sports NBA 2K3" include the ability to control pass type and direction, fake a pass, freely adjust lay-ups and dunks in mid-air and lunge out of bounds for loose balls. In the paint, an enhanced low-post game lets players fake, pivot, drop-step and even front the offensive player, while total control rebounding allows effective blocking out and board work. Enhanced ball and player physics produces more realistic caroms off the rim, while accurate impact collisions on hard fouls and blocks mimic the precise nature of the NBA.

The game's visual improvements are equally as striking. Specular Highlighting, a graphical technique designed to show players sweating during the game, is among the game's key visual enhancements. "SEGA Sports NBA 2K3" also features the incredibly detailed player faces and lifelike player expressions that more effectively convey the emotions of an NBA game. Players are instantly recognizable and react realistically to the action around them. From the players' tattoos to the mascots, each individual 3D model is designed to match the exact look of its real-world counterpart. Rounding out the package is a complete ESPN telecast presentation, which includes TV-style player introductions, dynamic replays and scoreboards and graphics overlays.

"SEGA Sports NBA 2K3" returns the series to the online arena with the introduction of full online play and downloadable content for both PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Gamers from around the country will be able to challenge one another over the Internet, check their win/loss records, download roster updates and maintain a list of favorite opponents. Additionally, the SEGA Sports Challenge, appearing in the SEGA Sports 2K3 games, allows fans to compare their offline stats against other players nationwide.

Joining the returning Exhibition, Tournament, Season and Practice Modes are reconstructed Franchise and Street Modes. The Franchise Mode allows users the option of signing free agents and coaches, scouting and drafting rookies, making trades and even drafting graduating seniors from "SEGA Sports(TM) NCAA(R) College Basketball 2K3." The Street Mode, which features legendary real-world street courts from around the country, now lets players customize their own street team by selecting any player from the current NBA rosters, one of the all-decade legends teams or from their roster of created players. Other exciting new features in the Street Mode include animated crowds and the addition of variable weather including rain and fog.

TalkBack / NCL Eternal Darkness Interview
« on: October 02, 2002, 04:09:49 AM »
Nintendo's Japanese website has a new interview with Denis Dyack and Mr. Yamada, regarding Eternal Darkness's release in Japan.  Translation inside.

Nintendo Online Monthly on Nintendo Corp. Ltd.'s website featured an interview with Denis Dyack regarding Eternal Darkness.  Also present in the interview is Yamada-san, who headed the production staff at Nintendo.  PGC brings you the translation in a 2 part interview.  Click the link above for the original interview in Japanese, plus some recent photos of Dyack and Yamada.

NOM: First, we would like to ask in what form did the production take place?

Yamada: Nintendo and Silicon Knights developed this game together.  The staff of Silicon Knights respected the works of Nintendo very much, and they were very happy to work with us.  With that joint development, everything went very smoothly.

NOM: The production time was quite long, wasn't it?

Yamada:  Hmm. It took a while.  Everyone at Silicon Knights are very involved with their work, and during the last months, everyone worked on the game without taking any holidays.  It was party because we made loads of impossible requests.  (laugh)

NOM: Where did the game's idea come from?

Yamada: Silicon Knights was responsible for the basic story, character settings, and game system.  With those materials, we reworked it with Silicon Knights' staff, and we basically upgraded the game as a whole.  The result is the game you are playing now.

NOM: Why did you make this game?

Denis: Initially we wanted to make an horror game, but a game that was totally different from what were already out there in the market.

Yamada: Denis himself also really likes Japanese horror genre games like Biohazard and Silent Hill.  However, this time we agreed on aiming to build a different kind of game.

Denis: We aimed at a horror that had more of a literary scent.

NOM: We see a lot of cinematic sequences in the game.  Were there any movies that you used as reference?

Denis: Director John Carpenter's Mouth of Madness and Hitchcock's suspense-building techniques come to the mind, but we had inspirations from a lot of movies.  To list them all would be quite impossible.

NOM: Why did you decide on a story that involved time changing?

Denis: First, I really have a lot of interest in history.  Therefore, there were many parts that were really based on actual history, although there were arrangements made for the game.  We also wanted to bring to the player a grand storyline that immersed them with the game's reality as well a sense of history. We created an premise in which people can experience the different times by employing Pious Augustus, who can live through thousands of years, in the story.

NOM: In the game there were various old buildings and structures.  Did you actually go to places like ancient ruins to for ideas?

Denis:  We could not actually go, but we really spent a lot of time researching buildings in each era.  The builds that appear in the game do not actually exist, but they had the style and decorations from their respective time periods.

Yamada: I remember that there was a scene in the game that had stained glass.  And when we looked it up, we found out that stained glass was not invented until 50 years later in that time period.  As a result, we took that all out from the background.  We pointed out a lot of those things to Silicon Knights.  The Japan team also researched a lot.

Denis:  That is right.  Although I did research myself, the Nintendo staff including Yamada-san looked up a lot of stuff for us.  They even checked detailed parts like "How many years is the gap?"  There should really be relatively little or no contradiction in the time design part of the story.

Part 2 coming soon!
