Did they fix the slow-down in Elliot Quest? Last I checked, it had actually been made worse by an earlier patch.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 427: In Defense of Lanky
« on: April 26, 2015, 02:22:05 PM »

Curtis joins the ruckus to talk about all the hottest topics of 2015: Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, and Twilight Princess.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/40136/episode-427-in-defense-of-lanky

We are very pleased this week to have returning guest Curtis Bonds, one of the bright youngsters behind NWR TV. He's here on a special assignment, but that comes later. First, Curtis has some very early impressions of the new Mario Kart 8 tracks, and we all chip in thoughts on the Mode 7 recreations, F-Zero mysteries, and more. Curtis also plays Donkey Kong Country 3 for the first time -- will he join the fan club? Jon Lindemann continues the retro love with a sneak preview of our upcoming RetroActive feature discussion, as he serves up impressions and stages a brief discussion of Twilight Princess. Meanwhile, James temporarily returns our focus to brand new games with his nuanced thoughts on Affordable Space Adventures, which Guillaume has also played. Jonny has a follow-up report on Box Boy!, while Gui anchors this long segment with the new StreetPass mini-games. We close this edition of New Business with a much-hyped debate over the merits of Donkey Kong 64. Curtis admits that it's one of his personal favorite games, but can he carry its torch through a modern examination? The rest of the gang, including first-timer Guillaume, also take a deeper look at this game that is now digitally available for the first time.

Listener Mail is up next, and it's back to the normal tempo... for now. Our first email is an eloquent defense of cross-platform emulation, most notably the recent addition of GBA and DS support for Wii U's Virtual Console. The next email turns playful with a survey of our guiltiest gaming pleasures, and the final bit of business concerns Nintendo's support of independent games on the eShop. Please keep sending your emails, big or small, to support the show and introduce new topics for us to explore.

Thanks for listening, and be sure to watch Curtis on NWR TV and CurtDogg Gaming!

Keep in mind that interruptions are often unintentional, due to the nature of Skype. How much of that you hear in the episode depends a lot on who's editing and how much tampering he has decided to do on that particular discussion. The level of cross-talk we leave often depends on the seriousness of a topic, or how clearly a person can be heard over the noise, and other factors. To hear how we converse more naturally when not using Skype, listen to episode 400 or the PAX panels.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 426: Connoisseur of Chaos
« on: April 19, 2015, 06:33:38 PM »

James is delighted by nearly everything on this episode, which features another infamous FPS and the return of the Listener Mail Lighting Round... or maybe it's better named the (Lords of) Thunder Round!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/40112/episode-426-connoisseur-of-chaos

There's something special about this episode, and it's not just that we may have set a new record for the number of emails included. No, it's that James is particularly giddy and demented, a condition incited by the recent Smash Bros. update's portal to all the custom level treasures/garbage he could ever want. Next up is Code Name STEAM, now running much more smoothly and subject to a deeper critical analysis by Jonny. At issue: what happens when a game gives you lots of interesting choices for tactical readiness, but no information upon which to base those decisions? The next Club Nintendo reward to be featured on the show comes from Lindy, who catches up with ocho authentico New Super Mario Bros. 2. That gets us talking about reviews, which leads perfectly into one of Jon's most famous reviews, for a game that Guillaume is playing for some damn reason -- The Conduit! He also tries Skip Ltd.'s experiment in charming realism, Chibi-Robo: Photo Finder. And, just because, Gui also dredges up the epitome of late 90s 3D platformers... yes, we're talking about Donkey Kong 64, now available (if you dare) on the Wii U Virtual Console.

Your email game has been strong lately, and there are way too many interesting questions to give them all the usual, in-depth treatment. So, we decided it was time to bring back an old experiment that, frankly, hasn't worked very well until now. It's the Listener Mail Lightning Thunder Round, and for once, we kept on pace to blast through a huge pack of questions. Hopefully, you'll agree that we still did some justice to these topics, despite the unprecedented pace. We may do this kind of thing more often, since it worked out quite well this time, but more substantial discussions will of course still happen as needed. Whether big or small, your email can become part of the show with just a few keystrokes!

Be sure to check out Jonny's recent guest appearance on the wonderful Radio Trivia: Podcast Edition, where he tries to stump our friend TYP. And by the way, now would be a good time to start playing Twilight Princess, as we'll be covering this lengthy game on the show in roughly one month. If you get stuck or have a keen observation, that RetroActive forum thread is up and running for just such purposes. And hey, did you know the RFN crew is actively competing in the NWR Smash Bros. Tournament? We made it to the playoffs... so be sure to follow a new round each week, right here on Nintendo World Report and the NWR TV YouTube channel!

Podcast Discussion / Episode 425: Korn Hits the Road
« on: April 12, 2015, 10:34:10 AM »

Gui plays a first-person shooter, on GameCube! Plus, your emails include the final Club Nintendo Elite rewards, Smash balloting, obscure rock band adventures, and Splatoon's voiceless online modes.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/40065/episode-425-korn-hits-the-road

It's time for another cartoo-oo-oon! Jon is back with both a vengeance and his thoughts on Axiom Verge -- good to hear from another satisfied Metroid fan. Guillaume makes good on a dare by playing a first-person shooter, on GameCube no less! But it's Geist, and as you may recall from our (pre-Gui) two ancient RetroActive discussions, that game is a fascinating mess. Jonny checks in on Elliot Quest, finishes Majora's Mask 3D (Oni-less), and returns to Box Boy for a more substantial look. All in all, this is a weird bunch of games for New Business, and James completes the set with Inazuma Eleven for DS... I mean, 3DS.

We're still lagging on the deluge of emails coming in since Nintendo decided to make the spring season interesting. Thanks for your patience -- more to come! But we did manage to address the last-ever Club Nintendo gold and platinum rewards, our picks for the Smash Bros. fighter ballot, a flight of fancy into gamifying some favorite rock bands, and that old chestnut of Nintendo skipping voice chat in a major online game (Splatoon, this time around). Please do keep sending those emails, which we love and cherish!

It's still a ways out, but with a game as big as Twilight Princess, this isn't too early to start playing along for RetroActive. As your thoughts and questions form, why not deposit them in our convenient forum thread for future podcast discussion? Yes, just like that.

Oooh, one last thing! Did you know that RFN has a team in the ongoing Smash Bros. online tournament, where we face off weekly against our Nintendo World Report friends? It's very dramatic and hella entertaining, especially with audio commentary from Scott and Neal to help explain every match. Check out the first few rounds, and keep up with the latest results on our NWR TV channel!

Podcast Discussion / Episode 424: Don't Say Pumped
« on: April 04, 2015, 04:25:29 PM »

Ahh, there's too much to talk about! How did we cram it all in? With some help from Donald and our listeners' emails, as it turns out.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/40022/episode-424-dont-say-pumped

So much happened in the last week that we knew it would be difficult to cover everything. On top of that, Jon was out on business travel, so we were playing with a man down. Donald to the rescue! Yes, returning guest and brand new NWR staff member Donald Theriault steps up to assist with this challenging and fun episode.

We kick it off with a sampling of Nintendo Direct news -- certainly not enough time to cover it all, but we offer some analysis on Nintendo's continuing DLC plans, the colorful revelation of Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, the surprise localization of Fatal Frame 5, expansion of Wii U's Virtual Console platform, and the ambitious new Fire Emblem game for 3DS. If we didn't get around to discussing something that interests you from that humongous Direct, just send an email requesting more on the next episode.

Even with all that news (and more to come in the last segment), we had to share some game impressions lest they be lost in the chaos of Nintendo's surprisingly active spring quarter. Donald shares a few thoughts on SMT: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker, weeks before the game's release for 3DS, and we also hear that Guillaume has turned around on the previous game in that series after not quite connecting with it by last week's episode. Another one Gui has come to appreciate is Cloudberry Kingdom, the procedurally-generated 2D platformer that works shockingly well as a multiplayer party game for Wii U (and other platforms). James horrifies everyone by actually playing and explaining Conception II, the tacky but maybe half-decent Atlus RPG (because we must eventually talk about every single one). Jonny tries to put out that fire and restore honor to the show with Valiant Hearts, a game about one of the least honorable conflicts in human history. Can a video game truly convey the horrors of World War I? Should it? And why the hell isn't this game on Wii U, when its companion (Child of Light) already is? No answers here, but there is plenty of praise for Ubisoft's melancholic (and informative!) adventure game.

Oh, were you worried we might skip over amiibo? Maybe we ought to, but nah, Listener Mail gives us the perfect opportunity to look at Nintendo's newest retail obsession and what, if anything, could pull us into that vortex. Zelda gets a spotlight too, of course, as we largely skip past the delay (for now) and focus on Eiji Aonuma's looming influence through a decade-and-a-half of running this beloved franchise. Finally, a fortuitously timed email gives Donald a chance to explain and promote his own podcast, Nintendo Free Radio. Check it out!

If you haven't yet heard the announcement, here it is: our next RetroActive game is... The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess! It's been over two years since we tackled this series for RetroActive, and y'all must want more, because the cross-generational Twilight Princess won (barely) over both Mario and Metroid in our biggest poll ever. Thanks so much to all who voted! It's going to be several weeks before we can play through this big game and discuss it on the show, but it's not too early to join the discussion in the official RetroActive forum thread. Remember, we'll quote some of the best comments on a future podcast.

116
Hi everyone! This is the place to discuss Twilight Princess for RFN's upcoming RetroActive feature. Please feel free to leave comments, ask questions, and share tips about the game. As a reminder, we will quote some of the best posts from this forum thread and read excerpts on the podcast during the RetroActive discussion, which is currently expected around mid-May. That gives everyone plenty of time to play through this lengthy adventure, one of the only games released on two different Nintendo consoles simultaneously (at least since the mid-90s).

We hope you'll play along with the RFN crew and discover, or re-discover, this unique entry in the Zelda series! Of course, Twilight Princess is available for both GameCube and Wii. You may want to note which version you're playing, especially if discussing controls.

Really, if Nintendo cared about people being able to get Amiibos they would have opened up a dedicated section of their online store and kept them all in stock there to order.

(You're too smart for amiibo.)

Podcast Discussion / Episode 423: A Diaper Too Small
« on: March 29, 2015, 08:56:01 AM »

You are not prepared for the New Business about to go down. Plus: Elliot's Quest, Xeodrifter, NX launch games, living with a non-gamer, the mythical Nintendo phone, and haunting hanafuda music.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/39947/episode-423-a-diaper-too-small

Last week's mega-news is still issuing aftershocks through this episode, but things have calmed down enough for us to resume the usual order of events. New Business starts innocently enough as Guillaume picks up Xeodrifter on a sale and finds that the reduced price was just about right. Then everything goes upside-down. Somehow, on the same week (can you smell the collusion?), Lindemann shocks the world with his impressions of... Babysitting Mama, while equally devious James subjects our ears to the metallic whining of... Wappy Dog. It's a kid-friendly gimmick theme that we never saw coming. After that foray into the bizarre, Jonny gets back on track with a fairly glowing report Elliot's Quest, an intensely challenging tribute to Zelda II. With our remaining time, we go back to Gui for a look at the early 3DS "Overclocked" remaster of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor.

It's no surprise that listeners had a lot of thoughts and questions relating to Nintendo's pivoting, so we start the email segment with some hardy speculation about the timing and initial games for the NX launch. (Some of those comments were made obsolete a day after recording by the delay for Zelda on Wii U, because Nintendo always rewards the cynical.) We also continue a recent trend of "advice column" emails by considering how to balance your life when co-habitating with someone who doesn't share your love for video games. Next up is the timely return of an age-old question: could Nintendo make their own, gaming-centric mobile phone? And finally, one poor chap's purchase of a 3DS home menu theme ignites a firestorm of debate over RFN's own Now Playing feature. Comment on any topic from this episode, or ask us anything related to video games, with yonder email form.

As of this posting, there are just a couple more days of voting on the next RetroActive -- be sure to make your mark by Wednesday, April 1st, and that ain't no joke! This is probably the only time we'll put Mario, Zelda, and Metroid up against each other.

We want everyone to participate and hopefully play along with us, whichever game wins.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 422: Alien Movement
« on: March 22, 2015, 06:15:00 AM »

Nintendo is going third-party -- on smart phones and tablets. We might have something to say about that.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/39895/episode-422-alien-movement

Every now and then, Nintendo announces something so big that we have to jump in right away. This week certainly qualifies. We flip the format and start RFN with Listener Mail, as so many of you asked us to pick apart the gigantic news of Nintendo making mobile games (and, by the way, still making a new dedicated game machine called NX). What ensues is a mixture of informed analysis, speculation, raw fear, tempered optimism, and indifference to such non-gaming matters. Predictably, we spend a lot of time on it, but there's also a follow-up discussion about spoilers and our role (as media) in preventing them. Rosebud is the sled and who cares anyway.

For New Business --after the break!-- Jonny has early thoughts on Code Name STEAM, plus a delightful disclosure for Axiom Verge. We can thank Club Nintendo for the unlikely offering of Ketzal's Corridors by Mr. Jones, while Lindy raps the praises of Sega's glory days, per 3D Out Run. Closing out the show, Guillaume finally scratches off Persona Q and falls in love with Mario Golf: World Tour, one of last year's overlooked 3DS releases.

We would love to hear more of your ideas, hopes, and concerns relating to Nintendo's seismic shift, or anything else going on in video games. That email link is free-to-play forever! And if you didn't already see it on our social media accounts (Facebook and Twitter), we are proceeding to the next RetroActive feature with renewed vigor. This one's called "Clash of the Titans" and you'll see why -- head over to the Google-based voting tool and make your preference known!

Well, Neal got through the confusion and was able to enjoy what comes out of that. Broodwars quit early and never saw most of the good stuff. So you can both agree that the game needs a little more direction, yet come out completely different on the overall evaluation.

Lesson: keep playing!

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 421: Eat That Frog

A small fraction of our listeners vote on RetroActive polls, and we are experimenting to see if the NWR forums are a limiting factor. It's as simple as that. Partial results from last time were very encouraging, but the unforeseen response quantity limitation cut us off early. I could have allowed voting on Google Forms without a login, but apparently they don't offer an IP tracker or cookie option, so someone could have easily exploited the system. Requiring Google is a small limitation (it is the world's most popular website) but if this causes too many issues, we won't use it again. Your complaint is duly noted.

So many Nintendo games! So much quasi-Metroid! So great Listener Mail! Such grammar!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/39856/episode-421-eat-that-frog

Hey friends, get hyped for this bulging episode of RFN! We start with lots of New Business, as Jonny checks out the trippy Proun+ for 3DS eShop, a game that evokes F-Zero, yet replaces butt-rock with jazz-rock. He also goes over the moon for Axiom Verge, a superb independent tribute to Metroid coming soon for PS4 and PC, coming maybe one sweet day for Wii U. After that, James cools us down with his ongoing sojourn into Persona Q, just one of an ongoing onslaught of Etrian Odyssey games on 3DS. Lindy follows up with his own Metroid-like game, the gorgeous Ori and the Blind Forest (Xbox One and PC, probably never coming to Wii U). It sure is a great time to be a fan of Metroid gameplay, unless you're stuck with only Nintendo systems! But even if you are, Guillaume can advise you on Mario vs. DK: Tipping Stars (on both Wii U and 3DS). He also reports of trying Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate local multiplayer, with actual experts!

Listener Mail jumps off and butt-slams into a status update on everyone's favorite greedy slob, Wario, and we might spend some time on his rival/buddy Waluigi, too. For something more serious, we try to help a listener determine if games are keeping him from living the life he wants. After all that earnestness, it just made sense to swing hard the other way. The last email concerns that guiltiest of all pleasures, the Dynasty Warriors franchise, and we consider which silly franchise spin-offs might get us to play one. We'll have more emails next week, and yours could be one of them!

It's not mentioned on this show (we settled the nominees just after recording), but we're already starting the next RetroActive! This one is called "Clash of the Titans" because you get to choose among Mario, Zelda, and Metroid -- whoever wins, we all win! We're trying another new survey method that should be better, so get your Google account ready (or make one, as you'll have to some day regardless) and vote now for RFN RetroActive #32!

More Fantasy Life, big sales for Azure Striker Gunvolt, and more in today's newsletter!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/39850/nintendo-newsletter-level-5s-major-event-azure-striker-gunvolts-success-kaio-the-king-of-pirates-cancelled

Level-5 Set to Reveal Major Project at Next Event

April 7 will be a big day for Level-5 fans, as they are set to hold a big event which will show their "next generation major cross media project" which, according to Siliconera, promises to be as big as Yo-kai Watch in terms of popularity in Japan.

Beyond this this big project, also shown at this event (titled Level-5 Vision 2015: The Beginning) will be Yo-kai Watch 3, Fantasy Life 2, and a seventh installment of the Professor Layton series. Beyond games, there will also be live music, conferences, and will also be live-streamed online.

Our Take: "The very idea that Fantasy Life 2 is forthcoming is the best news of the year so far for me. I am a little concerned that it might not make it to America, though, since I don't believe the first did that well last year." - Neal Ronaghan

Kaio: The King of Pirates Cancelled

Kaio: The King of Pirates, originally due to be released on the 3DS, has been cancelled, according to publisher Marvelous. According to a translation found on NeoGAF, they cited that current market conditions made it too hard to continue on with the project. It had originally been announced back in 2012, and was met with several delays until now.

Our Take: "Im pretty sure Kaio was to be released in 2013, and it's for the best this doesn't turn into a Last Guardian situation." - Donald Theriault

Azure Striker Gunvolt Reaches 100,000 in Worldwide Sales

Good news for Inti Creates today, as they reported on their website that Azure Striker Gunvolt has surpassed 100,000 worldwide downloads. The game, released in August for the 3DS, is also set to come to Europe in the near future, recently cleared by the several ratings boards over there as well as Australia.

Our Take: "Good news for those who enjoyed the game and hope for more in the future! I haven't played it yet but maybe I'll be number 100,001 to give it a shot!" - Bryan Rose

  • Publisher Marvelous acquired the mobile game maker G-Mode. The company has made a few titles for Nintendo platforms like GO Series: 10 Second Run on DSiWare and Dopamix for the Nintendo 3DS eShop. They are, however, mostly known for owning Data East's IP catalog and this includes classics like BurgerTime and Magical Drop. It is unknown at this time what the future for G-Mode will hold, though Marvelous could be intending to bring some Data East classics back to life.
  • Elliot Quest, an upcoming Wii U eShop title, has been dated. The game will be releasing in North America on March 19 and Europe will get the game a month later on April 16. The title, which seems to take inspiration from games like Zelda II, will have some Wii U exclusive features. Players can look for hidden paintings and this grants them access to a special new area. Next to this, you will be able to view Elliot's inventory on the Wii U GamePad without interrupting your gameplay!
  • Nobuo Uematsu, the famous Final Fantasy composer, didn't get asked to compose for Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U. Uematsu was responsible for Brawl's main theme, which featured a big orchestra and opera singers to boot. That being said, he admits: ''All joking aside, it's just that, since there are many video game musicians representing Japan who are already participating, there's no need for me."

I'm eager to play this game after the demo (which I loved, even though it was easy), but part of me wants to wait and see if they'll issue a patch to speed up or let you skip the enemy turns, at least on New 3DS -- if it is indeed a processing limitation.
