When have we ever been of a similar mind, hee hee? We already know your fave Zelda games are way different than mine.

We seem to match up quite well on Mario games give or take a Sunshine / Galaxy 1.

I'm listening to the BotW soundtrack on YouTube while posting this.
What soundtrack?

ZING!
I'm just gonna leave this here. It's obviously an interpretation, but it succinctly explains why I think this game has a better soundtrack than most people give it credit for having.

It was just a joke, hee hee. But yeah, to be fair, I've never been a fan of the atmospheric / environmental / minimalist style of music, which the 3D Zelda games tend to use. So I've never been a fan of Zelda music in general. Funnily enough, I think Wind Waker has one of the best soundtracks for Zelda even though the game itself isn't high on my list.

I agree that the game would be better with a butterfly net.  I also think the game is really lacking for not having a "smithy" character (as Ian puts it).  You don't even need a number attached to the durability of the weapon.  Just make it so that the smith will repair a weapon once it's in the "badly damaged" stage. Broken weapons could still be broken forever.

On the one hand, that could make the game easier, because you can keep your favorite weapons.  But on the other hand, ores and other materials would be more precious and you'd have to do more decision making on how you spend those.  So, it could balance out.

I was shocked that minerals were not able to be crafted into specific weapons, especially since some of them reference elemental qualities. At the same time, elemental weapons are such a mixed bag in this game, that I can see why someone might not want to waste minerals for them.

There was a time where I was hoarding elemental weapons.  But it got to the point where bigger weapons were so underpowered compared to other two-handed weapons that the elemental bonus wasn't worth it.

Maybe if the game included a clear way to make the weapon stronger, add attack buffs.  The weapon crafting system could be identical (or at least similar) to cooking.

Considering Nintendo usually addresses the main complaints of each Zelda in the next game, this is probably what they'll do for the sequel.  I have no problem with the current weapon system but I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo includes the ability to repair and upgrade weapons for the next one.

Of course if they do such a change I hope this will give them a good excuse to put in more engaging Lynel type fights to take advantage of it.  If people have a way to keep their favorite, high powered weapons then the enemies need to be made harder to balance it out since right now in Breath of the Wild, basically every enemy that isn't a Lynel goes down in just a few hits from the stronger weapons.  Hell even the bosses in the Divine Beast go down pretty fast if they're hit by any weapon that has over 50+ attack power on it.

There is a way to make weapons stronger. It's called "complete more shrines."

A lot of the 3D games tend to focus on 1-on-1 encounters with enemies so I'm not particularly looking for more of those. I'd personally like to see a 3D game that's more like Zelda 1 and has rooms full of aimlessly wandering enemies.

On the subject of horses, why don't horses drop anything when they're killed? I wanted to cook up their meat so that "I'm so hungry I could eat a horse!" no longer had to be just an expression.

I enjoy the atmospheric music, it is fitting for this game.

But I really loved the music for when you fight Ruto with Prince Sidon. that was a great tune.

Apparently, I have to sneak around a Lynel and stealth collect shock arrows, but I kind of just want to yolo-murderize him.

I was determined to fight that first lynel, even if it took me 30+ deaths. In the end, it probably took me about 30+ deaths but I was damn proud of it.

I hung out with a friend of mine today, the only one I have that owns a Wii U.  I asked if he has Zelda and he does but he's barely played it and he got it on day one!  He's off the Great Plateau and is earning money to buy stuff.  He has literally done no shrines aside from the Great Plateau ones.  He feels the sheer scope of the game is overwhelming and just doesn't seem that excited about it.  I was rather surprised.  Everyone at work that has this game is nutso over it.  Everyone on any forum I visit is crazy about it.  He is literally the only person I've encountered who has played this game that seems rather lukewarm on it.

As for me, I found Korok Seed guy today.  I also had some shrine that had a "modest" test of strength that I encountered much earlier in the game than I was ready for and had left unfinished.  It is the only shrine that I had left unfinished so I went back to that tonight and finished it.  It was nice to get that taken care off.  Still was a bit challenging to complete.  Also found a memory today by complete luck.  THAT was cool.  Usually I'm specifically looking for them and today I just thought "I wonder what's over there" and it was a memory!

Just finished Breath of the Wild. I have some things to say about it. No spoilers

Its pretty easy to say that BotW is the best Zelda game.
I think it sets a new standard for open world games when it comes to exploration. Being rewarded with shrines and korok seeds gives you a good reason to look around the world.
I spent a bit over 55 hours with the game, a large chunk of that was exploring the world. I did as much as I felt like I needed to do. Not much of that was in the north west.
It has the best dungeons in any Zeldy by far because they are short and enjoyable. I loved the shrines for being mini dungeons and completely optional.
I dont usually like crafting in games, but the cooking system was good.
Im glad they finally put some voices into the game. I would have liked to see all major characters fully voiced instead of just cut scenes.
Favourite parts is the exploration and flying.
Least favourite part is the combat.
Most annoying part is the breakable weapons.

This makes a lot of sense to me. Whenever you hear people rave about "I spent 50-100 hours on this!", I mean, that's like 100 episodes of TV shows, or 3 re-reads of War and Peace. Daunting as hell.

I've not played an open world game since Spider-Man 2 (discounting the 2 hours in Xenoblade X), and never really used crafting systems before. The prospect of Zelda is both thrilling but also a bit off-putting, if only because it seems like such a massive commitment. Instead I've been playing Sky Force Anniversary, a simple arcade shmup.

Will certainly get Zelda soon, but just saying I think I understand where your friend is coming from. If you look at Zelda as this monolithic entity that must be consumed whole, rather than a whole bunch of bite-sized chunks to dip into at your leisure, it's just a very daunting proposition.

Plus I mean, people who rave about it on forums are kind of self-selecting right. For every 5 hype posts there's surely someone out there who got sucked in by the hype and "doesn't get it" or gave up early. Reckon once the honeymoon phase is over we'll see more critical takes on BotW emerge.

I can understand the scope of the game being intimidating, it is why I have trouble getting very far into other large open world games and/or RPGs. There were even times in BOTW where I felt overwhelmed but I still came back to it, there is just something about the game that makes me want to come back. Still I can understand how one can feel overwhelmed, even to the point of not wanting to play.

I don't know if a smithy is necessary, but I'm surprised there doesn't seem to be any sort of weapon shop in any town, unless there's one hidden away somewhere. Being able to buy and sell weapons would certainly be nice.

What weapons did you guys use on this? What was stopping me was that I didn't have enough weapons to last through it, but this was one of the first places I went to so I was still finding rusty crap. I had to go back later.

It makes sense to me as well. The game also has little direction once you leave the plateau, and I personally think it's most difficult at the beginning of the game, so combine all that and I can certainly see how this game could be difficult to get into for some.

What seems to have helped with the management of the overwhelming overworld is the design of the Switch. I can pause and sleep the game at any time, then resume immediately upon startup. Also, if my wife wants the TV I can unplug it and move to another room (also a Wii U plus). This flexibility really seems to have helped me tackle the adventure.

I assumed there would be a shop too. I figured once I beat the game I would find a place I could buy most any non-unique weapon. I also thought there would be a better way to store extras. You should be able to place weapon chests in your home. If I want to hoard Royal Swords because the look like Roy's Sword of Seals from Fire Emblem, then I wish I could do that.

A smithy could could have been a perfect solution, letting me exchange the ore I find for new weapons or to repair my own. I'm hoping they add something like that for the DLC. It sounds pretty comprehensive since it will take 6-8 months to release. Not like they need to print discs so that is all development and QC time. Also, I'm sure the basics are at least already planned out since before the game released so it may even be closer to 9 months of dev time, and if Rogue Leader could be completed in 9 months, I have high hopes for Breath of the Wild DLC.

I used the silver equipment found in the Zora town. You can find one or two silver shields, and a couple silver swords (both 1 and 2 handed) along with 2 bows. The metal shields really helped me since I suck at the timing for the doges and flurry attacks. Even the rusty shields are a bigger boost than any of the wooden ones.

Thats how I felt about Witcher 3. I only ended up playing or for maybe 25-30 hours. Its a similar size game, but with more complicated systems (two swords? blade oil? Spells?)

Being able to buy and sell weapons would certainly be nice.

No point when they break so easily.
