TalkBack / Re: 3DS-Focused Nintendo Direct Coming This Wednesday
« on: April 16, 2013, 12:32:24 AM »
Bring on the Directs.  E3 doesn't mean jack for announcements anymore. Most of any companies' smaller games just get buried under the weight of the few incredibly telegraphed big announcements anyway.

When you do the puzzles you have to want to try different words. If you are happy using the same words again and again it's not for you.

If you want it to "future-proof" your pc it just has to be able to run PS4/720 games.  Game that need specs beyond that are going to be beyond rare for probably near a decade.

I can't help you much choosing the parts. If you still need this in a month or two post again and I should be able to though.

^ That's one sad line-up.

And i thought PS4 lineup (from what was officially announced) was underwhelming...

We probably should expect more exciting stuff from second and third parties. Avalanche studios (Just Cause guys) are doing something, Epic is definitely doing something.

If a third party isn't already announced it isn't a launch title (outside of ms ownedv3rd part games like gears). Third party games not 100% bought and paid for will all be crossgen the first year.

General Gaming / Re: Is Xbox Live a Ripoff
« on: April 10, 2013, 01:25:36 AM »
As someone who gladly paid for Live for the original Xbox, it is a huge ripoff.  At the time it was the only way I could play with my roommates together online, and on the  same tv was a huge bonus. My pc was crap and the market wasn't flooded with low spec games like it is today either. Even then I didn't like paying but I did.

Now paying for live is the mark of the gullible. PS3 has no charge, Wii gave free online play with fc and WiiU and PS4 will have the same services for free. At least the original Xbox had unique games like crimson skies and mech assault, even halo was still something special at the time. Now fps with halo mechanics are a dime a dozen and ms doesn't make the more unique games anymore that they can lock you out of.

Always online=live required. That means a subscription is mandatory when buying the device. This is where we see MS introducing the "pay 200 now then 80 dollars a month forever" model.
gee thanks for repeating what I said already... live is still a rip off

I'm not repeating what you said, I'm referencing the new subscription model for 360 they've been tring out. I expect them to try to sell it very cheaply up front with a much more expensive live that makes them more money in the long run

It's Jason Rohrer so I'll get it. The guy just has great ideas for unique games. I still think Sleep Is Death was amazing.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Satoru Iwata: Hubris versus Western Culture
« on: April 05, 2013, 01:13:24 AM »
the biggest change has been how conservative nintendo has been with him in office, we have seen no major new IP's since he came in and expirimentation in games(sunshine) has died as well...

It drives me absolutely crazy every time someone says anything like this. Every single part of this is wrong.

Iwata presided over probably the riskiest years Nintendo has ever had. The Wii and the DS were both huge risks. Just because they are successful doesn't make them anywhere in the ballpark of conservative.
Not only that but the games that started it all for both of these behemoths were new IPs.
Experimentation in games dieing with Sunshine? Have you played any of Nintendo's games for the Wii? I'm not going to make some kind of huge list but the Wii was the console for experimental games and games that did something new.

In the 90's LucasArts was one of my favourite devs and practically every PC game they made was great.  They seemed to have a real commitment to quality but I find that disappeared around the time the prequels came out and then you never knew what you were getting.  If it they weren't in the unique position of owning the Star Wars IP they probably would not have lasted long into the 2000s and they deserved to be closed up long ago.  The "real" LucasArts died over ten years ago so I don't shed any tears now.
Agreed, the real Lucas arts has been dead for awhile.

They only make Star Wars games now so I see no reason for them to be a studio when the games can just be farmed out.

General Gaming / Re: Sell millions, still a failure?
« on: April 02, 2013, 01:19:27 AM »
Is it a question of sales vs expectations or sales vs. budget?

I think it is a combination of super high budgets and the big risk of the video game industry. Investors need huge returns when putting in that kind of money and the unpredictability of the video game industry, at least compared to other industries, means even bigger returns. I think a lot of these games break even, but unfortunately breaking even isn't close to good enough.

Video of a Presentation by AJ Grand-Scrutton CEO of Dlala Studios who is working inside of Microsoft's  Soho building (holds Lift London and Soho Productions) in an incubation process. Video is about ow the studio got started and how Microsoft is trying to help its image in the eyes of indie developers. So they're working in a situation similar to thatgamecompany had with Sony. They have a contact with Microsoft to work on a game for them (how many games wasn't disclosed) and Microsoft gets to keep the IP. In return Dlala is using space inside of the Soho building alongside Microsoft's two internal development studios. Dlala is paid as if they were normal Microsoft employees as well receive help from other studios and MS employees. By the time the game is complete Microsoft will have enough capital for Dlala to work as a completely independent studio and then go forward and go their separate ways. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft buys Dlala after the contract is up as a way to show independent devs that working on Microsoft platforms could have great benefits.
On that note i'm pretty surprised that Microsoft hasn't acquired signal studios yet as thye have worked on nothing but Microsoft platforms thus far.

So Microsoft being friendly with "indie" devs is them having an indie guy work in their office, be payed exactly like an MS employee and MS gets to keep all IP rights to what is created.

That sounds identical to working directly for MS, what is independent about any of that?

I can get HR, all the expansions, the original Deus Ex, and the crappy sequel for under the price of the game on WiiU.

I'm not going to pay day one prices for a year old game.

Looking back it was obvious that they wouldn't run anything on their servers because it costs money. Unless the game has a subscription model somewhere or some weird monetization strategy that brings in money everyday it doesn't make financial sense to run any part of the game on servers.
EA is so cheap they don't even have the servers to handle the first week "check ins" so they will never move part of the game there. If they ever did the game would be closed down the minute they could get away with it because outside of possible very successful DLC it becomes a drain on the company after of the first month.

Where are you getting that pricing info from?  I haven't even seen Valve put anything official out there.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2030479/xi3-takes-orders-for-piston-steam-box-at-sub-1000-prices.html

There is a $100 discount to those who pre-order before March 17, though it's still over-priced.

Making this thing so small, it's freaking fist sized, seems like something totally unnecessary that is jacking up the price.

Yeah,
EA had the SWTOR Release under there belt and Mass Effect 3.  They should have known what the server strain would be like guestimate.  They totally underestimated and someone didn't do proper load testing.
I'm not even sure they underestimated it or if they did only by a little. I don't think EA wants to put the money into having no day one problems because they see it as something that will be fixed by time and the inevitable drop off of users.

To make up for this whole launch mess with the game, EA said they will offer a free download from their online store (thought they did not specify details, like if people can choose any game or if it's from a pre-selected list of games) to those who bought the game.

They are going to give everyone some old game that no one is buying anymore or give people a choice of two shitpiles. Its a horrible fix that costs EA essentially nothing since its just a digital download and these people wouldn't buy it anyway. I imagine its going to be an old game EA is making a sequel of to give them free advertising in the process. They won't even let people return the games when they don't work so don't expect anything that would affect them in the slightest.

45
If TF2 has a small cult following than online multiplayer is dead. Only brand new games of select franchises beat those numbers and TF2 has already been out for 6 years.

46
My main problem with the steambox is that they are trying to sell a PC in a console market. One of the big reason that people et consoles is the exclusive games.

That's why I think it has a chance, third party exclusives died this gen. Sony and MS just don't have the first party to carry the consoles, look at the Sony Smash clone. MS has Halo, which is a runner up in the fps arena today and ... Fable. Unless you have tons of love for Naughty Dog the Steambox is a great deal for people planning on getting these consoles.

47
The thing about EA today is that they can't withhold any of their big guns because they don't really have control over them. Madden must go everywhere and I imagine FIFA does too just because that FIFA name doesn't come free.

Their other games just aren't as important and is basically a list of wannabees and has-beens. Those EA games are games you might want on your console but they aren't games you need. I haven't picked up an EA game in ages and the only one that has interested me for a long time is Mass Effect.

48
I'd just settle for a Xenoblade Wii rerelese.  The thing is over msrp and that is just too expensive when I've got other games I'm looking at.

Dude is speaking the truth. I say a post on Gonintedo with  similar tidbits.
http://gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=197181
Quote
“Activision didn’t expect much from Wii U sales of Black Ops 2, but they
sure didn’t expect it to be that abysmal.  Activision gave Wii U owners the best
version of Blops 2 with Off TV features, and Nintendo fans didn’t support it.
It’s easy for Nintendo fans to trash publishers for not giving them ports, but
publishers have wisened up.  They realize Nintendo fans are all talk.  Nintendo
fans are vocal with their mouths, but when it’s time to open their wallets,
they’ll spend that $60 on New Super Mario Bros instead.”

nobody tried to advertise that, if it wernt for rfn i woldnt know it had off tv play

Stop quoting that story, it is bullshit like I said earlier. Gonintendo even has this as the first line now
"UPDATE - This story turned out to be completely false. We can go back to being grumpy about other Wii U-related items!"

Developers(specially those still new to F2P, who firmly believe you must pay money to play our game) pay lots of attention to people who play F2P games without spending a single cent. It's just not positive. They can't wait to stick a paywall in there, or make the "free" experience of the game as short and unsatisfying as possible. It gets to the point that they don't see them as potential customers, but more as moochers. So their thought is "I'm going to remind you every second of the game that if you don't give us money then you suck and your experience will suck" instead of trying to woo me into giving you my money.

I see what you're saying and I agree with you. A lot of companies go beyond not giving a **** into actually hating the players that aren't actively shoving money at them.  It really explains the "used games are as bad as piracy" **** I see and that Cliffy seems to believe but is smart enough to not say outright.
