It is never exactly 99 seconds, but you shoot a lot regardless!

99Seconds is not a new hot thing that popped up out of nowhere. The game started its life as a just-okay DSiWare title. Now this experience has come to a bigger screen on the Wii U, and it is better, but not extremely so.

Your goal in 99Seconds is as straightforward as it can be. As humanoid ship V-99, you try to avoid obstacles for as long as you can, earning points with every passing second. Your chances to raise the score come in the form of power ups, which adds 9000 points or 9 seconds to the timer. To more successfully avoid obstacles, you can slow down time and get yourself through some very tight spots. The concept in itself is fun, and there are obstacles to avoid. Three difficulty settings each challenge you in different ways. It is addicting to play and easy to pick up!

The only problem is that 99Seconds never really changes in look or feel. This arcade experience is always the same one, which makes only short sessions worthwhile. Anything longer and you will get burned out by it. The look itself is very simple and almost retro, but it does not really manage it to pull it off.

Unlike the original on DSiWare, players have access to online leaderboards to share their accomplishments over the Nintendo Network. Even better are the local multiplayer options, in which up to five friends team up to work towards a better score. There is also an exclusive multiplayer mode called Survival. These are one-screen challenges that place the five players against each other in a never-ending barrage of bullets. I had a ton of fun bumping my mates into said bullets, which made them scream in rage.

99Bullets is a neat distraction that fills an arcade itch. It won't last you forever, but thanks to the multiplayer and leaderboards, you will get more mileage out of it. The presentation is fine, but it never really changes, and the charm for its almost-retro look fades fast.
