TalkBack / Re: NWR's End of the Year Awards 2016
« on: December 30, 2016, 07:32:18 PM »
I don't understand the hate for Star Fox Zero. I've really enjoyed it, and I've had several people come over and want to try it and about 1 in 10 hates it.

The whole "new-ish take on a franchise is despised by [some] fans" seems to have been a running theme for 2016. Maybe it needs to be like figure skating and we throw out the top and bottom 10-20% of Internet reaction.  ;)

It's also possible that someone will produce a "shell" cover that also includes an additional battery, as is sometimes done for phones.

Nice Pikachu's vacation ref ;)

I was wondering how many people would actually get that, especially since the recent re-releases of those films don't include the shorts.

TalkBack / Re: Pokemon Snap Launching On Wii U In Europe This Week
« on: August 15, 2016, 07:10:24 PM »
"Pokemon Snap U" sounds like a rather dangerous game, if you ask me. As the tag line suggests, Go may be a worthy substitute.

My only problem with Sticker Star was that it was just about impossible to play without a guide. Not only did you need to know which stickers to bring with you to a boss fight, you often had to know exactly when to use them during the fight. If you didn't have the necessary stickers with you, or used them at the wrong time, you were just out of luck. I finally resorted to just using an FAQ for the last part of the game. I never would have figured out the sequence for the final boss without it. If Color Splash has the same issue, I won't bother. If that has been corrected I'm eager to try it.

I'll probably get Color Splash no matter what, but I'll agree that the sticker system could use some cleanup. The "Thing" stickers are one of the coolest aspects of the game, but there weren't enough hints to suggest which ones might work where in battle most of the time.

Mario Kart makes me wish it had 2-player simultaneous support (even if it did require 2 new 3DS and two copies), though the only mode worth playing that way is Battle Mode (still possibly the best Battle Mode of any game in the series).

TalkBack / Re: Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon (3DS) Review

I actually vastly prefer the connection mechanic to randomly getting asked by Pokemon you just defeated-it feels less obtrusive to me, and it's nice having upfront criteria for getting new party members. I prefer the random way the main games do it for those, but for Mystery Dungeon, I'm fine with the system here.

TalkBack / Re: Rumor: Pokemon GB Virtual Console Games To Be $9.99
« on: November 16, 2015, 10:26:22 PM »
Main series Pokemon games (and even some spinoffs) hold their value incredibly well, at least in America. In Japan last year I was able to pick up Red and Silver for about $10 each.

TalkBack / Re: Pokemon Shuffle Mobile Stacks the Deck
« on: September 26, 2015, 01:12:03 PM »
Some of this is probably also attributable to the fact that (I believe) in-app purchases on mobile also send part of the money to the platform owner (at least on iOS). That's presumably part of the reason Pokedex 3D Pro was more expensive on mobile than 3DS.

The songs at the end sound like they could be from an unreleased Earthbound Neon. Am I right?

1-2 hours of driving sounds like the appropriate amount of worthwhile travel for that, no?

Wimp. ;)

If you like Pokémon but aren’t that insanely serious about it competitively, I probably wouldn’t recommend traveling more than an hour or two driving to get there.

I disagree. It's definitely more difficult, but I think you can still have a good time without being there for the competitive aspect. If you can strike out and just socialize with people about the franchise, you can occupy yourself. Of course, it helps if you're not only covering the event for a website, but also endlessly fascinated with people's stories like me.

Sounds like you're playing the games incorrectly. ;)

One thing you should have mentioned in the review was your overall musical background (how much music do you listen to, have you played any instruments, etc.). For what it's worth, in the co-review I did with my mom (an orchestra teacher who plays video games but has limited knowledge of Pokemon), she seemed to really like it despite not having familiarity with the game plots.

I look forward to hearing your impressions on the event. Was this the first time you've been at a major Pokemon tournament?

Different publisher, but perhaps there's still hope for Pokemon DJ Hero.

Probably not.

I've observed footage of Blast Corps on Rare Replay, and noticed a few things:

1. The game has much less slowdown than on the original N64. The original game has quite a bit, which speedruners would mitigate by changing the camera angle during large explosions. This can be good or bad depending on your perspective.
2. Unlike some N64 emulation I've seen, the map icons are properly displayed (I figured they would probably get that right).
3. Speaking of incredibly useful glitches, I assume they used the revised 1.1 version of the game that fixes the "destroy building by exiting vehicle" glitch, though I haven't been able to confirm that.

As I recall, Connectivity (may have still been Newscast) did a feature on the Blaster Master Overdrive WiiWare game a while back. Would be an interesting point of comparison.

Very sad to hear this.

On a side note, I wonder if the folks at NoA knew about this as far back as E3. Might explain things a bit.

I wonder if they had a different structure planned before Zelda U was moved to 2016, and either "over-trailered" to try and fill the perceived gap, or didn't have enough time to do as much of a rewrite as they wanted.

I do prefer getting a new 3DS Zelda game to another HD Zelda remake, however.

"Gannon*"'s a real name too-they should find someone with that as well.

*Yes, I know the game character is spelled differently.

I actually thought Gates to Infinity was the best one in the PMD series yet-the only thing that I really didn't like was having to max your team rank to unlock all the songs in the sound test.

Unfortunately, it's the same weekend as Pokemon regionals, so I won't be able to go. On a side note, I think the Best Buy demos were at a decent amount more than 50 locations last year (considering we had 3 here in Wisconsin, I hope so). 2013 was more like 50.

23
Retro Game Challenge would be a fun choice (albeit unlikely, especially until/unless it comes out on Japan VC), since they could frame it as "from the creators of NES Remix". Oh well.

24
Even though I was pretty terrible at the game, I did like playing it, and I've pre-ordered it. For reference, most of my prior experience with shooters comes from an obscure Macintosh game called Avara (it looked kinda like if Star Fox was an FPS). I wish you could play the tutorial level with the other weapons.

I wasn't expecting Donkey Kong 64. I wonder how they've handled the Jetpac situation.

If Nintendo had to sign something with Rare to get the DKC games back on VC, maybe that was part of it.
