Honestly, these details look better than what they first announced for DLC. Though, I'll be waiting for this "new dungeon" at the end of the year before I consider buying it.

Nintendo Gaming / NBA Playgrounds
« on: May 03, 2017, 06:30:11 PM »
Umm...is it weird that NBA Playgrounds might be the second game I buy for the switch?  It just seems like the perfect follow-up to the vast adventure I've had in Breath of the Wild.  Anyone else going for it? Also, does anyone know when reviews will be out?

Pikmin 3DS, Lady Layton and Ever Oasis maybe? More interested in the first 2 than the last though.
I'm much more interested in Ever Oasis than the first two.

We are at an impasse.

I'm more interested in the first one and the last one than the middle one.

The impasse grows.

By the by, looking at the activity log of some of you guys is quite impressive to say the least. 100plus hours in a single player game is insane, especially when the game is still only under 3 weeks old.

I've never spent this much time in a game.  I usually tire out around the 40-50 hour mark.  Every night my entire family (wife and kids) begs me to play for at least an hour (often it ends up being more).  This has been our routine since launch day.

5
I've made it off the Great Plateau and have begun exploring some of the towns and villages in the second section (that is, the one you're guided to).  This game scratches a weird itch in gaming that I never knew I had.  All of its components seem really well balanced and the sense of discovery and exploration is second-to-none.

The awesome part is, if you get tired of any one aspect you can take a break from it and push forward.

Don't like cooking?  Be creative with physics and weapons.
Tired of fighting Bokoblins? Just sneak around them.
One day I'll be in the mood to look for a bunch of shrines and build out my map, the next day I just want to push forward with the story.

It's not a flawless game (what is?), but one of the most exciting I've played in the last decade.

Funny, I have been playing Freedom Planet myself. I think I am on level 4. Very fun game, but the between level cut scenes are too long!

I think you can turn those off.

Interesting, I'm also curious about banks.  Every time I accumulate a lot of money I'm able to find some piece of gear or two that enhances a party member's stats.  I've never lost money because I almost always spend it as soon as I find a new weapons/armor/item shop.

Did some concentrated playing over the past few days and I have finally reached Alltrades Abbey!!

How long after the Roamers section is this?  I just made it past that.
Directly after. You're almost there. Go talk to the King, lay the fragments you've found, and you're there!

**EDIT**: Hmmm, I may have spoken a little too soon. You'll see.

Thanks, I made it there!  Glad you told me because I had planned on setting the game aside for a while after the Roamers section.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Forum Snap Poll: How Sold Are You on the Switch?

These dang accessories are still going to cost way too much though. They don't drop in price nearly as much. Good news for Nintendo is that most armchair critics and casual customers don't factor the accessories bill in to the system purchase cost.

I agree about the high price of accessories, but isn't the point of the Switch that it has everything you need right out of the box?  Two controllers, portable and console with dock.  I don't feel the need to buy any accessories at launch (or within the first year).

I don't understand your qualm about the level design, I'd rather a Zelda game be dense than overly expanse. Breath of the Wild will fail if its specific biomes lack personality- this is why the landmarks are important parts of the landscape as well as engaging aesthetics.

There's probably a nice balance to strike.  I'm hopeful that BoTW has an expansive world you can get lost in to enjoy the scenery, but the individual villages have a lot of dense secrets and interactions to explore.  This might be asking too much though...

You concern about Zelda in the article confused me. You really think it will be standard open-world action/adventure with a Zelda skin?  I haven't heard that complaint from anyone else who played it (or seen the latest trailer).  If anything, Zelda seems like the one known quantity for the Switch.

I am extremely positive on the Switch overall.  The Joy-Cons are surprisingly robust, the games look interesting (Zelda, ARMS, Snipperclips, SM Odyssey), and the build quality looks fantastic.

There is one thing that everyone seems to be underestimating as far as the market is concerned.  Unlike the Wii U, the general public will actually get to see people out in the wild playing the Switch.  Imagine seeing someone in a coffee shop with a different looking tablet that has cool detachable controllers playing an awesome looking Zelda game.  What is that ?  That's the new Nintendo system?!?  I think the form factor alone will help the Switch sell better than the Wii U in the first year.

Damn, I need to go to work in a few hours, but I just watched The Conjuring 2....
I see why this movie got so much praise.
So if you looking for a good supernatural horror/thriller, I think this is one you check out.

This is great to hear.  I loved the first one.
Not sure if I'll be able to convince my wife to watch it with me though.  She still has memories of going into labor a mere hours after watching the first one together.

... gives the idea that there will only be four dungeons a bit more credence, and I've heard from other sources that the pillars around Hyrule Castle are directly linked to the dungeons, as well. However, I wouldn't be surprised if dungeons are much more expanse than in previous titles...

I think four expansive dungeons and 100 shrines would be great.  I like the idea that the difficulty of the dungeons might scale based on how many shrines you've completed (abilities gained).  Sure, you could go ahead and try to tackle all four of them right off the bat...but good luck.  You're going to need those shrine abilities to make things manageable.  Didn't Trinen make a comment along those lines during E3?

I thought the new trailer was fantastic.  It was nice to see people and towns populating the landscape.  The only thing that worries me at this point is the lack of dungeons.  Has Nintendo confirmed that there will be traditional style dungeons in game?  Or, is it possible that the world is just full of those mini-dungeon "shrines"?

Well, I picked up this game a couple of weeks ago on a whim (never having played a game in the series before).  I'll confess that I didn't really like it at first--mostly because the battles seemed too easy and repeated character models/terrain textures seemed pretty boring.  However, the game has picked up significantly and revealed a lot more depth after my third or fourth island.  I'm really enjoying it now!

I kind of wish Nintendo would find a way to repackage the Mario Party Series.  The board game aspect of it (and especially the strange balancing that tries to keep everyone "competitive") has gotten old for me.  The mini-games are why I enjoy Mario Party. If they could put some slightly different wrapper around them, it may breathe new life into the series for me.

I completely understand the aggravating part. But the strength (and the boredom) of it comes from trying to get past that. That's not very exciting to watch, admittedly.

I thought that TNG episode was really boring as a kid, but have appreciated it much more as an adult.

It's called Stockholm Syndrome.
I always get very confused whenever people use the term "Stockholm Syndrome" because it 1) has a very specific meaning in the field of psychology related to captors and hostages and 2) has a very loose popular culture usage that seems roughly equivalent to "you irrationally love something you should hate".

If you mean it in the context of number 1 then, yes, there is some Stockholm Syndrome going on.  If I were taken hostage and forced to place Skyward Sword then I would very much have irrational feelings of sympathy toward my captors...for they clearly have decent taste in video games.  If you are using definition 2 then, no, there is no Stockholm Syndrome present.  I recognize all the game's flaws and have listed my least favorite parts above.

I thought Groose was one of the best characters to come out of a Zelda game.
I can see why people like him. For me, he just had too much of a "frat boy" persona.  That and his haircut.  I have this weird thing about distracting haircuts.

Well, it's been nearly three months and I've finally beat the game!  I'm not sure how much commentary I can add beyond what has already been said, but here are some random observations.
  • The controls worked pretty well for me throughout the game.  I would have preferred the game without motion controls but, hey, we'll probably never get them again so why not live 'em up?  Interestingly, I never had trouble with the skyward strike until the last boss (as Shorty mentioned).
  • Dowsing wasn't as bad as people made it out to be.  It wasn't a great idea, just not that terrible.
  • Things I absolutely loved: the beetle, the silent realms, art style, most of the dungeons, and timeshift stones.
  • Things I absolutely hated: item upgrade system/repairs, overlong quest, the last boss, Groose, flying

...but the fact they choose to show a village that screams exploration and a callback to Mario 64 with the spinning heart to me says that's the kind of Mario game this will be closest to.

Boy, I hope that's true.

TalkBack / Re: How Nintendo Can Sell a New Handheld Alongside Switch
« on: November 03, 2016, 06:13:35 PM »
I can't see this happening.  Nintendo has intentionally simplified the messaging of what the Switch is.  Adding a handheld component that plays graphically simpler games that share the platform but don't play "Switch console" games seems to get us back to the Wii U/3DS family of systems confusion.

I think when Iwata referred to the NX having multiple form factors, he was merely talking about the detachable controllers (which have the potential to transform the system in lots of ways).
