That's awesome. I read about it before, but that's the first time I saw the video. This could lead to tons of awesome, awesome stuff. Hopefully someone develops a media center program with access to SD storage, or even a USB HDD, then I get get rid of my gigantic Xbox...maybe.

Nintendo will patch it with the next update. You just KNOW they will...

I don't think this is something that they can possibly patch, it's a hardware issue. It can be fixed in newer systems, possibly.

So what's all this about homebrew?

I don't think this was so much any modification to the hardware, as it was breaking down the code to see what code was needed for the drive to read in order for it to provide access to all the hardware that was Wii.

The only reason why nintendo would not like this is if it opened the door for people to pirate games.  It's still not as if you can just burn a disk and have your Wii read it.  You still have to have some bypass that skips over that security read on the disk that only nintendo can burn into every disk they make.

In the end I don't think Nintendo should worry about this, as there will be an increadibly small number of people that will use it.  Correct me if i'm wrong but I think this is about writting fresh code and games for the Wii instead of simply pirating games over onto it.

You don't need this (and probably would not want it) for Wii piracy. There have been Wii modchips since about 3 months after the system came out in the US. This is all about homebrew, plain and simple, it's basically what the whole convention is about, which is why they showed demos of Linux on the 360 taking advantage of the 360's 3D abilities, instead of talking about playing copied games.

I was looking for the old Wii Homebrew thread, but couldn't find it so I'm bumping this one instead.

I decided to finally homebrew an old Wii that the disc drive stopped working on (for the 3rd time), since it was gonna cost about $70 to fix it, it was worth risking bricking it to get the Homebrew and USB loader up so that I can copy over all my old Wii games to an old HDD and give this old system some new life.

So my question is, what are some quality Homebrew Apps and Games?
whats worth checking out? what is necessity? what should I avoid?

I was following a video tutorial on how to do all that. it was very simple and I wish I had done it 2-3 years ago....

Homebrew Channel: http://youtu.be/m70dCXkn1CE
USB Loader: http://youtu.be/gKPEgwbCFa8

New question though. Since my Disc Drive in the Wii is not working, is there a way to transfer over the games using the disc drive in my computer? or will I just have to download the games from the internets?

Yep. I have a program on my computer I used to rip the game data off. I'm not at home right now so I can't check the name but I found it pretty quickly on Google.

Depends on the drive in your PC. I think it has to be an LG drive (specific model), I always used my Wii's drive to rip straight to a USB HDD.

so hidden option B it may be....

Well, that would probably be quicker and easier anyway, even if more risky.
I'd rather not take the risk, but I'm paying the cost of a new Wii just to fix the one I have and don't play. This mod isn't for my use.
