I think they would rather not work out software emulation because they get more licensing money from PS3 games.
Seeing the God of War and Sly collections, I'm betting that they will just resell PS2 games for the PS3 on discs or PSN. I wouldn't mind that since I never had a PS2.

Honestly, I don't mind the collections, either.  The Sly Collection was fantastic, and the Team Ico Collection is on my list of must-haves.  My only big problem with this strategy is that there are PS2 games I still enjoy playing that are extremely unlikely to get PS3 Collections, like the Persona, Wild ARMs, and Shadow Hearts games.  At least it's very likely we'll see a Final Fantasy X Collection.   :-\

Just makes me glad I never started buying all the games I wanted to play on the PS2. I either have to hunt down a launch PS3 for the B/C or rebuy the PS3 collections. Its easier to buy collections when you never bought the original.

I think Shaymin was talking about the numbers for North America, not worldwide. What are the sales figures for Wii and PS2 only in North America?

EDIT: The Wii number is in that press release so that's easy enough. Wikipedia has a PS2 figure (again, didn't check source), so:

Wii: 34 million
PS2: 50 million

So even in North America alone, the Wii has a long way to go to pass it up.
FYI, those Wii numbers are USA only.  PS2 numbers are North America (Which includes Canada).  So the Wii could fathomably be only 10 million away in North America.

Just Dance 2 has sold more than five million units for the Wii since launching last October, according to internal sales data from publisher Ubisoft.

The Just Dance line, which consists of Just Dance, Just Dance 2 and Just Dance Kids, has sold a combined total of over ten million units globally , and Ubi says it was "the third biggest franchise worldwide in 2010".
[...]
The original Just Dance was the third bestselling game in the UK last year, while Just Dance 2 placed sixth, according to figures released by UK interactive entertainment body UKIE earlier this week.

I have to admit that I own 2 of the 3 titles in the series.

Good point! I hadn't considered that. If Chozo Ghost's comment of the Canadian population is true, then we could assume the Wii has sold in Canada about 1/10 of its US sales, which would add another 3.4 million to its total. North America also includes Mexico, though I have no idea how well systems and games sell there.

I remember hearing it from watching Red Green. I remember him and Harold were arguing about something or other and that topic came up. I wouldn't put too much stock in it though, seeing as how the show is a comedy and all. But I looked on Wikipedia, and Canada's population is 34 million and the US's population is 308 million, so it turns out he was more or less right.

Interestingly, California's population is 37 million so that one state alone has a larger population than all of Canada.

It also helps that Japan seems to have this thing for Donkey Kong related stuff. Even that crappy CGI cartoon from the late 90s was popular in Japan and had some toy merchandise tied to it. (it also had some famous voice seiyuus in Japan).

That's because the first Donkey Kong Country was Nintendo's 3rd best selling Super Famicom games with over 3 million copies sold.  Not to mention the drop in sales between each new installment was way less in Japan then it was in the rest of the world.  Which is why Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3 sold half of their worldwide sales in Japan alone compared to the first one that made most of it's sales thanks America and Europe.

Basically Japan is where the Donkey Kong Country series had the strongest fanbase and so it's no surprise to see that a new Donkey Kong Country game has finally make DK a star in Japan again.

Unless I'm mistaken, Donkey Kong Country is titled "Super Donkey Kong" in Japan. Is the Wii game still titled Donkey Kong Country Returns in Japan as the Media Create seems to suggest, or is it simply listed with the North America title to avoid confusion?

I see Pokemon Black & White crossed the 5 million seller mark.  So is that 3 games now over 5 million (B&W, D&P & NSMB)?

Animal Crossing: Wild World has sold about 5.1 million in Japan and Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day! has done about 5.05 million.
Considering two of the titles that have sold over five million are technically two games combined as one, I consider there to be only 3 real five-million+ sellers in Japan.

Well, once again Nintendo hardware takes the lead, but I hope Nintendo takes note that the lead for this holiday season over the competition was slimmer than the lead in previous years, and this means they better do something if they want to keep their streak going for this year's holiday season.

It is also kinda nice to see 3rd party software on the Wii selling extremely well for a change.
