Though it's not without some modern touches.

After three decades, audiences outside Japan will finally get to experience Marth's original tale in its 8-bit glory.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & The Blade of Light, the 1990 Famicom release, will be localized and released worldwide on December 4. It will be sold digitally for US$5.99, or in a code-in-box physical version with additional items for US$49.99. The game will remain on sale through March 31.

Players will be able to rewind to the start of previous turns, fast-forward through phases of combat, and reload save states during the game as well.

The world ends 31st March, that's the only explanation

It will come to Switch Online eventually is my prediction. They probably hope to recoup the translation and improvements development costs before releasing it to subscribers. I have the old DS remake already so I'll probably pass on this, but I would definitely like to see the other Japan only titles on SNES, GBA, and DS to come over in this manner as well.

All these limited time releases are weird. Especially for digital editions. People accused Nintendo of false scarcity in the late 80s. No need for rumors this time around. They're upfront with it these days!

At least we know what the big December game is! I'm sure it'll light up the NPD charts. ;)

...the sad thing is, I'm actually tempted to ask the NPD Group if they count this as a game for sales chart purposes.

Since it's only $6, I'll gladly take it.  The DS remake added and changed certain things so playing the original is a different experience for anyone that might have played that version.  Of course be warned that the original Fire Emblem is pretty outdated to anyone that's used to the modern games.  The rewind feature and bookmarks should at least help cut out some of the frustration, but it's still going to be kind of rough for anyone that isn't a hardcore Fire Emblem fan that doesn't know how far the series has evolved since then.

Three strikes and Nintendo is out. I'm not getting this out of principle.

I think Nintendo is testing a new business model to celebrate their past games and make false demand.  The fact is, this game would not have the same demand and success if it was released into the wild.  You are basically buying an old inferior game of a series that has updated itself and has had much better releases.  Historical significance aside there is no real good reason to play this game.

That said, making it limited edition will make people feel the need to buy it or miss out.

This is basically my opinion or the original NES Metroid.  It is an important game for the franchise, but it isn't a good game.  It is a pretty broken game.

Aw nuts! I was hoping it would be on the NPD. I wanted to see next-gen games losing to an NES game in sales! LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Nintendo does report million sellers in their quarterly and yearly reports.  So if it does a million by the end of December they'll report it in January and if it does a million by the end of March 31st, they'll report it in their yearly totals they release in April.

So you might get your wish.

Because of how cheap it is I may actually pick it up. But I'm still on the fence. The only reason I am even considering it is because of the save state features (and in the always foolish hope that supporting this will lead to more Western releases of Japanese only titles.)
