Title: New Sakurai interviews!
Post by: stevey on February 23, 2008, 05:17:53 AM
Interview 1 (http://wii.ign.com/articles/853/853748p1.html)

Mr. Iwata would track you down if you tried to make a game for a non-Nintendo system?

Masahiro Sakurai: the possibility exists

Quote
Really, Sora is at its core just two people.

There goes any chance of a Sakurai-less Smash

IGN: Brawl seems like the perfect game to introduce a Wii headset for voice chat. Why have you avoided this?

Masahiro Sakurai: Well, when I first started making Smash Bros. Brawl, I thought it would be wonderful if online battles between friends had voice chat and potentially keyboard based chat as well. But there are all sorts of rules and regulations regarding communication on the Wii platform and so it was apparent to me that it just wouldn't come together, we weren't going to be able to do it, so we decided to cancel that feature. I'm very sorry about that.

I wonder what rules stop it, there are already FC to keep out the potty mouths and pedos??

IGN: Have you received interest from other third parties who would very much like to have their characters included in Smash Bros. Brawl?

Masahiro Sakurai: Nope. No other ones.

Bye bye Nintendo hate/punishing Capcom rumors

Quote
IGN: We have to ask because there are so many rumors about this. Are there any hidden characters to come? Can you unlock more hidden fighters by way of WiiConnect24 or will you offer new downloadable content -- new fighters, for example. -- using the service?

Masahiro Sakurai: No. There are no characters that can be unlocked via connecting to WiiConnect24 or interacting in that fashion.

Nooooo!!!

Interview 2 (http://gonintendo.com/?p=36202)

Sakurai talked about the movement and motion of the various characters. He said that thinking of character moves for the game was so easy, there was virtually no limit or hindrance to coming up with a vast supply, and most moves wound up being things that he himself wanted to see in the game.

Anger rising :@

the final roster was finalised at the very beginning of development, with Sonic the lone exception, added in 2007. The initial plan was over-sized; they aimed high and created as much as they could. So what you see in the final game is some fraction of the overall planned roster

Sakurai !!! :ph:

It's sad. Had we not been force-fed the pile of irrelevant single-player extras, who knows what the roster would've been like.

I love the single player stuff from what I have seen... but all of the extra content likely made it hard to add in additional characters, since almost all of them are relevant to the SSE storyline and are featured in cut scenes. You also have things like Snake's secret taunt, and all of the dialog that goes into that's related to each specific character. Consequently, they really piled on the work for themselves that would be needed to add in even someone simple like Mewtwo.

No, we know what the roaster could have been.

Dr.Mario
Mewtwo
Roy
Dixie Kong
Plusle and Minun
Toon Zelda
Toon Sheik

These were the characters who had small amounts of data stored on the disk because they were planned and then cut.  Meaning if Sakurai was able to get all the characters he wanted to in the game, THESE would have been the final 7 characters.

And when I see that list, I'd take a single player mode over those characters any day.  Now I'd have liked them to keep Mewtwo, and Dixie and Plusle/Minun would have been interesting but getting a massively improved single player mode is a much better trade off then what would have been mostly clones anyway.

Now if Ridley, Geno and Megaman were on that list I might be on your side.  But according to the disk, Ridley was never planned on being playable and Geno and Megaman were never even planed on being in the game so the single player didn't effect their chances at all since they had none to begin with.

Thing is, we'd be playing with those characters in versus matches for the next 6 years online.

Most people will play through the SSE a few times and then NEVER again.
