Title: So much for my wallet
Post by: KDR_11k on February 08, 2007, 05:20:36 AM
You probably know that at least 4-5 games I'm waiting for come out in February (because, hell, everything comes out in February). What's worse is that I just discovered that Play Asia has Symphony of the Night for 25$ (JP version) and when I clicked that there was a huge list of castlevania soundtracks and they also have a discount on CotM (JP, 15$)... ARGH!

Anyone know which game from the Cv series has the best music? Currently I'm considering the CotM soundtrack because from what I've heard (in videos and my short playtime with the broken used copy I had) it sounded the best so far.

I've played most of the Cv and think that SOTN had the best soundtrack.  The stuff on the GBA and DS was pretty good as well.  To be fair though, I never the Rondo of Blood though.  That's my 2 cents.

Hm, the SOTN soundtrack isn't available (only Nocturne in the Moonlight) so CotM it is.

I like a selection of the recurring melodies that have been used since the early CV games (Bloody Tears, Vampire Killer).

Nocturne/Symphony has the best soundtrack since it's the biggest, most complete, mostly originally, and orchestrated from the ground up.  It has a nice progressive-rock angle to it.

Most of CotM's tracks I liked aren't original to the game.  Quite a few were lifted and dumbed-down from the N64 Castlevania games.  The rest of CotM songs I thought were so-so.

But I like the original music made for the N64 games a lot.  Some of the remixes in it were also nice.  I liked its "haunting" style, I just wish there were more tracks.

Lament of Innocence was moody and forgettable.  Not even so-so, just forgettable.

Good, the NitM soundtrack is slightly cheaper, too.

Maybe I should call this "Requiem for Liquidity"

Edit: Found SotN at 1€ on eBay, let's see if I can get it at a decent price...

It's gonna sound strange, but my absolute favorite track from this entire series comes from that weird Genesis game.

The stage in Athens.  The Sinking Old Sanctuary.

In fact, that Genesis game is actually quite a landmark in terms of musical achievement.  The soundtrack is great, which is phenomenal on Genesis, simply because if your name was Sonic or... Shining Force or something, Genesis music was dreadful.

Okay, it arrived and I can say Nocturne's soundtrack is pretty bad. Sounds more like Zelda OOT/MM or random pop music, ZERO Cv themes in there. In fact it's just as disappointing/awful as the Zelda MM OST that didn't even include f-ing Eternal Legend. Complete waste of money.

Why didn't you "sample" (ie download) those soundtracks before you bought them?

Because then I could just as well skip the buying and I don't want to bother with tracking these things down through whatever crappy mp3 warez sites people use nowadays (if any of those even still have a CD from '97)?

I sample/download anime and it still doesn't stop me from buying the DVDs of the series I like.

KDR, you know, you never mentioned what style were you actually interested in when you asked for suggestions. (I did say Nocturne contained original music, but i did fail to mention it was ALL original, i.e. no classic themes whatsoever..... except for DANCE OF ILLUSIONS from the beginning of the game)

I liked it cuz I liked hearing it as I was playing the game, so there's my bias.  Did you ever play it?

I thought it sound more along the lines of the Tales series music rather than Zelda's simple melodies.

And the Zelda OSTs in japan are all single-play let-downs.  I rip the music myself and edit the WAVs to make the tracks loop at least once if i'm going to have any sort of listening pleasure.

I figured Castlevania is pretty much unambiguous. But then again I've only heard the music from the NES, SNES, GBA and DS games.

Nope, didn't have any console from that era.

The OOT/MM soundtrack wouldn't be worth listening to even with loops. Half of that CD barely qualifies as music.

Hm, if I get SOTN, can I somehow take the music tracks and put them into a format I could play on a PC?

Yes.

But I thought you didn't like SOTN musak.

If it's like Nocturne, no.

It's Castlevania Chronicles OST, then.

Nocturne in the Moonlight IS Symphony of the Night.  Most Castlevania games have different names in Japan.  Which means if you didn't like Nocturne's music then you wont like Symphony's because the music is the exact same.
